S54 PT #2 - Play by Play

For several generations of Canadians, Bob Cole might be the most memorable voice from their childhood. Simple catchphrases such as “Oh baby!”, “Wow!” and “Shot! Scores!” are captured by Cole in a perhaps dated style, but there’s little debate that Cole is among the all-time greats in terms of sports television play-by-play. Bob Cole is a legend, and he is one of the greatest voice commentators to ever live.

For my first goal in the SHL, it was a dream the have Bob Cole up in the booth. Growing up hearing that voice, the call was perfect. Hearing it the day after on SHL Network was mindblowing.

"He shoots, he scores! His first SHL goal, and boy it was a beauty!"

"He streaks through the neutral zone untouched, one guy to beat... he shoots... He SCORES!"

Then the Classic Bob Cole line: “And the place goes crazy!”

Breath in. Breath out. Breath in. Breath Out. It’s a game like the others, she knew exactly what she had to do, but she couldn’t help but feel a bit stressed out. This would be her first game in Buffalo, after a few games on the road with the organisation. She wanted to win this game. Set the right path for her career and what the management and the fans could expect of her. She stood in front of the player’s gate to the ice, trying her best to not let the stress get to her. She almost jumped when the Buffalo Stampede captain, Alexis Metzler, put his glove on her shoulder with a reassuring smile. She played a few times already, it was nothing to be stressed about. Then, the announcer’s voice boomed in the arena.

“And now, your Buffalo Stampede! Tonight is her first career start with the organisation, prospect selected with the 11th overall in S51. Elizabeth Doyle!”

Metzler nudged her forward and Elizabeth took the ice under the cheering roars of the fans.

Skip Santos: Jones has the puck on his stick, he moves it over to Toner at the blue line. Toner moves it to Kenny Creller. Creller shoots, and it is saved. But the puck comes out, the goalie can’t hold onto it. Elijah Jones is there, he pounces, and he puts it away!!!! Theee…. Garbarge…. Collector!
Chad Manly: Incredible goal by Jones. It was a greasy effort if I say so. Jones battles his way into the front of the net and finds the loose change. The garbage collector collected the goalies garbage and made him pay! Respect the garbage!
Skip Santos: Exquisite play by the Panthers. They manage to win this game 10 to 9 in triple overtime. The hero of the game, Elijah Jones, is jubilant with the rest of his team. There’s a ray of sunshine shining on the city of Angels and it’s thanks to Garbage Collector, Elijah Jones. Hip Hop, Hurray!
Chad Manly:Well put, Skip… Well put.

The game is tied 1-0 with the San Francisco Pride visiting and leading the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets are bringing the puck down the ice in the hands of Slip McScruff, who slides it over to Satoshi Zizagooney who dekes the man guarding him. He finds Bale in front of the net! Bale tips it in oh my gosh goal number 6 for the rookie from Anaheim! What a shot.

*6 minutes later*

We see the game tied up with the Winnipeg Jets needing a win to keep their season even close to being alive. Their second line is currently out there with stud rookie Bale, Goku Muerto and Ignatius Blunt. Blunt gets the puck off a rebound and he has a man open ahead of him! Blunt slides it forward to Bale who lets one rip towards the goal... GOAL! The Jets go up 2-1 and this could be a defining goal in the young career of Bale. It looks like he could be on his way to his first first star!

This moment meant a lot to me because it was my first game with two goals and my first first star game which was pretty cool. And we really needed a win and I felt like a really contributed, even as a lowly 680 TPE player Smile

"Alexei Rykov's streaking in... DENIED! Glove save by Tegernako!"

"Tom Fiddler's sprung forward by Zeno Miniti... ROBBED BY TEGERNAKO! That hit the paddle of his stick, and he's able to get his glove on it before Phineas Gold can corral the rebound. The young Swiss netminder is having an amazing 3rd period!"

"Bobby Lane shoots, and that's Markus Tegeranko's 30th stop, en route to what seemingly will be his first career win in the SMJHL..!"

Even if some people would prefer to remember their first win in the major league, to me, this first win with the Lethbridge Lions signifies much more. It was the moment I got hooked. It was the moment I started really interacting in the locker room. It's when I got the starting gig - which I held for the rest of the season, the playoffs (in which I recorded my first 2 career shutouts), and 2 more seasons after that. It's how I fell head over heels for this "weird hobby" of ours, but that to me, is awesome. Plus, that season was the one where I got the Viktor Onoprienko in the SMJHL... It's special to me. ^^

Welcome back to Game 6 of the Season 45 Four Star Cup Finals between the St.Louis Scarecrows and the Detroit Falcons. St. Louis has been in control through the first 5 minutes and looks to end things tonight and win back to back Championships here at home. Steven Moyer wins the face off. Shot by Bernard Freeman, Shot Blocked by Nat Emerson, Shot by Adam Taylor, Shot Blocked by Nat Emerson, Shot by Steven Moyer, Shot Misses the Net, Shot by Jerry Larry, Stopped by Cedric Robinson with a rebound, Shot by Adam Taylor, Shot Misses the Net, FREEMAN WITH A HUGE BLAST!!!!!!!!! OFF THE POST!!! But wait, Moyer is there with an open net. GOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!! Steven Moyer gives the Scarecrows the 1-0 lead with a beautiful rebound into an wide open net 5 minutes and 41 seconds into the first period Assisted by Bernard Freeman and Adam Taylor.

This was the first goal in the 5-3 win of the St. Louis Scarecrows S45 Four Star Championship clinching win against the Detroit Falcons.

And it looks like Tampa Bay is going to be hammered again this game, already 7 to nothing for Hamilton. Last time these teams met Hamilton won 11-0, this one could get even uglier. 1st and 4th respectively in the league in time on ice and 1st and 2nd in shots blocked Liam O'Callaghan and Jakob Hamr are getting more and more agitated out there. Hamr has flicked a pass which got deflected and went over the glass. Time for a face off. Tom Fiddler wins the faceoff and turns to pass back to Hamr, but he lets it slide past him. Tig Murphy skates over to pick up the loose puck, and Hamr is off to the races. Slamming Tig into the boards, who crumples to the ground like a ragdoll. That is going to hurt tomorrow morning. Clear foul play by Hamr here just trying to shake up the stars of the opposite team now. This season has been getting to him, and the more agitated he gets the more he starts lashing out. Tig shuffles to the bench to get a clear head as Hamr is escorted to the box.

Newfoundland in a bit of a bind here as they’re on the penalty kill again. Puck is dumped into the Newfoundland zone, Jukka Timonen chasing. Good pressure by Timonen here. Timonen on the boards now. Some great work by him to get to the puck and contain it. Puck comes out and its Matthew Forrester with it now. Forrester dumps the puck down the ice. Wait – no, it’s a long pass here. Pass going to a streaking PBJ who caught the defense on a bad, bad change. PBJ going to be in alone here! Oh, what a move! Scores! Shorthanded beauty for his first of the season and Newfoundland are level again!

You look at this again, and I’ll tell you what I see. Amazing read by Matthew Forrester to see PBJ breaking out like that. And to flip him the puck down the ice was a special move. PBJ had great read on a brutal defensive line change, but what was really special was the moves he put on the goalie. I didn’t know he could move like that! That’ll be one for the highlight reel for sure .

"With only 38 seconds left on the clock we have a face-off in the neutral zone. Pelletier lines up across from Chester Cunningham.

The visiting crowd can feel the celebration on the verge of erupting...

The visiting bench counts down the seconds... and the puck drops.

Pelletier wins the face-off and shovels it over to Caelum who quickly enters the Panthers zone and dumps the puck of to...

Foster is there to intercept and tosses a puck to Reflieux who looks for Cunningham... ten seconds on the clock!

Holmberg steals the pass and finds Ouellette.

The continue to dig it out of the corner.

Five seconds...

Holmberg has it on his stick! He finds Caelum at the top of the zone.

The horn blows! And we officially have your S39 SHL Champion... The Minnesota Chiefs! The bench empties and the celebration begins!"

One of the best seasons I was a part of. You could feel the desire @Baelor Swift wanted to win. It was an amazing experience and will go down as one of my favorite moments with Olli O'Koivu finally winning that elusive Cup.

"The score is 4:4 we are currently in the 3rd period of play with a bit more then 6 minutes left to play!
The scarecrows just got a penalty for boarding.
Robinson is at the dot against Mitsuharu. The referee drops the puck, Robinson wins it.
Zimmermann gets the puck at the blueline and passes it to Kofix.
Kofix handles the puck and is looking around for another open position. He sees Robinson and passes it over to him.
Robinson is shooting... No he isnt he faked the shot and isntead passed it over to Zimmermann.
Zimmermann with a direct shot to the net!
Doyle is way to slow to make the save thanks to Robinsons fake shot!
GOAL GOAL Zimmermann puts it in the net to make the score 5:4 for Anaheim! What a play by Robinson! What a goal for Zimmermann.

Could this be the deciding goal for Anaheim to win the 4 Star Cup? With only 6 minutes left to play this definetly could be the case!

Thank you @Carpy48, @honkerrs

One of my favorite moments as a player was scoring my first goal with the Raiders. It went something like this.

Halifax is down 3-1 here in the 3rd, as Alexander Roach gathers the puck in the neutral zone and skates it in. Past the Whalers defenseman, and he's in the zone. Drops a pass for Marty Sertich, he skates back and takes the shot! but it's blocked on the way. Von Arx grabs the loose puck, and feathers a pass over to Roach. He skates into the slot, takes the shot...

AND ITS PAST GOODMAN!!! HE SCORES!!! THE FIRST OF HIS CAREER FOR ALEXANDER ROACH!!! What a shot! Raiders cut the deficit in half!

The home crowd went nuts as I high fived my teammates skating past the bench. Captain Kayhall had grabbed the puck out of the net, and gave it to me in the locker room afterwards. I was even named 3rd star even though we lost that game.

Game 1 of the S52 playoffs vs the scarecrows

“The Raptors finishes the season tied for first in the standings but so far this has been a tightly contested game with the scarecrows. The puck is dropped and controlled by the Raptors blue line. The raptors rookie Bradley Barkov controls the puck and cycles it forward to fellow rookie Sven Svenson. Svenson shoots!...stopped by the goaltender, but he lets a big rebound escape back towards the center! Barkov is charging forward to fill the gap. He one times it on net!....HE SCORES!!! Unbelievable accuracy for Barkov on a one timer! The goalie didn’t have enough time to set up properly after the rebound and the Raptors take a 1-0 lead on the scarecrows to start the series. The fans are going wild! Barkov had a relatively quiet first season thus far, showing occasional flashes of his big potential, but today he certainly look determined to make his mark on this series!”

Triple overtime winner, Game 3 vs Hamilton Steelhawks, S53

"We're back with the SHL Playoffs, Blizzard versus Steelhawks, game three of this series. We're currently in triple overtime. Obviously, a goal by either team now would end this one and then entire arena has been on the edge of their seats for about forty-five minutes now. We're back to game action now, Wilson and Pepperoni going in the faceoff circle, and Tony wins it. Back to McIntyre and then up the side to Tokolosh, who carries it into the offensive zone. You know Kryyst has his eyes open with the Blizzard's top line out there. They can put points on the board in a hurry. And just as we're talking about it, a shot by Tokolosh rings off of the post and into the corner. Pepperoni on the puck, he plays it back to Tuck, who sends it back to Pepperoni. Now over to Blackwood. He's got an opening! KRYYST NEVER HAD A CHANCE! BARRETT BLACKWOOD PUTS THE PUCK IN THE BACK OF THE NET TO SEND EDMONTON HOME WINNERS HERE, AND UP IN THE SERIES 2-1!"

S52 SMJHL - Game 7 - Anchorage vs. Colorado

Game is tied at 4-4 here at Anchorage and after a crazy game and a exciting overtime we are heading to shootout. Rookie goalie Jerry Huuveri is hunting his first win and it wont come easy as he faces a hungry Armada squad face to face.

First shooter is Armada's Mitchell van der Heijden who comes with great speed.. backhand.. forehand.. and what a save by Huuveri who robs Heijden with his glove. Heijden tried to get Huuveri moving and hoped for some room in upper corner but Huuveri with it all the way.

Next up is Colorado's Denver Wolfe who comes in slowly moving the puck left and right fast.. He almost stops and releases a quick snapshot towards five hole and.. IT TRICKLES IN!! Just like that Colorado is up by one after first round of shooters.

Armadas second is Daniel Bischoff who comes from left side and starts to cut towards middle.. does a little shimmy shammy and shoooots... HUUUUUUUUveri gets it with his blocker as the home town crowd lets a disappointing exhale out. This could be all over after next shooter.

Henrik Lekberg Osterman can end it all as he slides closer to the net.. backhand.. forehand.. little leg lift to fool the goalie aaaaand what unbelievable Forsberg move that was!! IT'S IN! IT'S INNNN. HLO completely fools the goaltender as he goes the wrong way when HLO slides the puck in with one hand. Amazing move by the Swede! Colorado wins this match as players are celebrating. HLO picks the game winning puck and gives it to Huuveri who gets his first win in SMJHL and as a Raptor!
