S57 SMJHL PT #6 - MVPs

As someone who admittedly does not know or care about other players from other teams, I will talk about my two linemates that have propelled a rookie to 18 goals and 12 assists. Those two linemates are my captain Alexander Oscarsson and Walton Stromberg. These two wonderful linemates bolstered a rookie to a 30 point season. Captain Alexander Oscarsson has 53 points in the season, 16 goals and 37 assists, while Walton Stromberg has 45 points in the season, 12 goals and 33 assists. They have propelled Jonny Tsunami to being 2nd on the team in goals. Jonny Tsunami admittedly feels like he is not good enough to be on the first line with these two great players, but the coaches have put their belief in Tsunami, and Tsunami on the first line has been paying huge dividends. I don't think there are any other linemates in the league that could have propelled a rookie to having this strong stat line in their rookie season, and for that Tsunami is thankful for having such great mentors.

The best defensive line Ole Olson has played with so far in his career just happens to be the only defensive line he's played with. The Carolina Kraken defensive second line comprised of Finn von Murphenstein and Ole Olson have combined for 50 points, 171 hits, 42 takeaways, 140 blocked shots, and an average 56.5 game rating this season. These players, while not performing especially well in the plus/minus category, have proven an excellent pair of blue liners for the young Kraken team. They have gotten better and better over the course of the season, and are looking to get off to a very quick start next season. Murphenstein was the main game steerer from the blue line, while Olson focused more on getting gritty by blocking shots, making hits, and getting into fights. While they aren't the best pairing in the league, they work quite well together and will likely dominate the league going forward. Hopefully they get the opportunity to continue playing on the same line to prove that they can be one of the best lines in the league.

During the first part of the season I had the privilege to join in with two sophomores in Luukas Lilja and Freya Hellström. This unholy alliance between two Swedes and a Finn created an offensive trio capable of playing in the offensive zone (unfortunately only that). Our line produced quite good, with Lilja and Hellström being more quick and experienced around the ice and myself basically spending as much time in front of the opposition's net. It took some getting used to, but eventually the scoring got going and in total the trio produced more than 55 points together with Hellström leading the way with 15 goals. To change things up a bit Lilja and Lind found themselves joined by Vincent Wolfe in the latter half of the season. Unfortunately the production the line as well as the Kraken as a whole deflated and the trio only managed to produce around 25 points during the final 35 games of the season.

MVP Line or Pairing? For St Louis? That is tough, as I believe St Louis had 2 really good defensive pairs this season. Lambert and Weiser were the top pair and played really good hockey all season long. Especially Lambert, who had 38 points and a defensive game rating of 77. Weiser on the other hand, was his polar opposite. He only notched 25 points but racked up an impressive 176 hits. It's almost like putting an offensively minded defender with a defensibly minded defender works... but I want to point out the second pairing in St Louis. The pairing featured veteran two-way defender Jimmy Dekens as well as rookie Jean-Locke Zidane. Dekens wasn't very impressive with the puck this season, 16 points and a DGR of 65. The negative 26 plus minus isn't nice either, but it happens when you're on a team that struggled the first half of the season. His rookie partner Zidane, managed to notch 29 points with 178 hits. Zidane, while playing a very physical defensive game, was able to have enough sense to rack up assists all season long. One of the most impressive aspects is his 73 DGR. If I had to pick the better pair, it would be the Lambert - Weiser pair, but believe Zidane will be able to step up and be a huge asset on the top pair.

Fredrik Stefansson, Jonny Tsunami, and myself comprise the best line I've played with. We haven't played a ton as a line, with Jonny getting a lot of first line reps, but when we're all on the ice together? Look out. The main thing that makes us deadly the fact that each of us does something well and we combine to form an insane trio. Jonny? He's the scorer. Whether it's a long distance shot or cleaning up the mess in front of goal, the Tsunami just has a knack for finding the back of the net. As far as Stefansson goes, he's the rock that keeps our trio together. Always in the right spot, always moving the puck to the open man, and a deadly shooter from the outside. And lastly, I'm the point guard of the line. Scoring? Fine. But setting up the Professor or Tsunami for an open look at goal? That's what I'm here for. Together, we're the best rookie line in all of hockey and I foresee incredibly good things for the three of us in Maine for years to come. First step? Killing it in the playoffs. Stay tuned!

Luc Blouin doesn't have a ton of experience playing with different defensive partners so far. He played on the 3rd pairing for Vancouver in 5 or 6 games last season but I can't remember who he played with for the life of me, definitely not a top performing player. This season I've been paired with Evangelos Giannopoulos the entire season on the 1st pairing for Detroit, so Evangelos Giannopoulos definitely takes the cake when it comes to best defensive partners. Since I've been playing as a quarterback I feel that my contributions haven't been as noticeable on paper, it's been more about setting up other players to do well. I think next season this combo will be better, assuming Giannopoulos stays down for 1 more. I've been developing my skills and should be getting to a competent playing along side a great player like Giannopoulos.

When we asked Guilliman what his favorite line would be he claimed that he loves getting to play in an all rookie line. This as him in center,  Gerry Atrick on the right and, Travis Koncny on the left. Getting to play with his fellow rookies makes for some fun play and you can feel that everyone wants to do their best for the team. The rookies on Kelowna have all gotten super close so this rookie line is like playing with some of your best friends. Guilliman find that everyone knows what each person has to do and where they need to be. With Guillimans ability to get the puck around showing us his great assist and Atricks ability to put shots on net and score great goals this line works well together. Koncny is also a great addition because when teams try to shut down Atrick he has the skills to step up to the plate and is great at both his passing and his ability to score!

The most deadly combination of defenseman me and my team Newfoundland has had the misfortunate of going up against has to be the juggernaut team of Quebec with their very strong defenseman pair of Boris Petrov and Jari Hekkinen. Every time we had this team coming up you always knew you'd be put against this pair and it was never an easy game. Jari being the on the left and more of the point getter of the line putting up and impressive 36 points with an incredible +50 just to show off how well they can defend their own end at the same time. On the other side of the ice we have Boris who is more of a physical player making you regret anytime you come up his side as he will squeeze you out on the board and take the puck on you putting up 122 hits on the year and just following short of his partner at a +49. I believe these two players make up one of the most deadly blue lines this season and sure the playoffs will just show it off even more.

Interesting. Best linemate is always a controversial type of question. But I can not go wrong by choosing on the Number 1 team in the league, Quebec City Citadelles. The defensive duo of Boris Petrov and Jari Heikkinen is a perfect match. On one side with Boris we have a defensive player that can get those hits, and can cover for the rest of the team when they go up for offense. While on the other side we have Heikkinen, who is more offensively focused, and the way that they cover both ways, makes them great. Looking at their stats this season, they have combined for 64 points in 66 games, and 171 hits. Fun stat but they also combine for 189 penalty minutes between the two of them. While they may not play on the first line, and not score the most points, the duo is a terror for teams to play, and for Bjorn and the rest of Quebec to see at practice.

Being in my first season in the juniors after being drafted by the Carolina Kraken it's hard to say the greatest line I ever played with because it's our first season together and my first season ever in the SHL. So for now I'd have to say my defender linemate and me Ole Olsen are the best defending duo I ever played with (which by all means is not hard, and the first line defenders are probably better in any shape or form, but I have the most experience and statistics for us two). If we don't look at the combined plus-minus for us two (seriously, don't look please), the rest actually does not look too bad. A combined 175 hits, 43 takeaways and 142 blocked shots account for a nice defensive package for two true rookies. On the offensive side they were able to make 12 goals between the two (6 each) and 38 assists for 50 total points is nothing to call home about that much, but still a nice start to their careers and they will truly be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

While I haven't played a line with them, I have been lucky to spend the season getting to watch Colorado's first line of Kekalainen, Dolphin and Panda absolutely scorch the SMJHL. Combined, the three were able to put up 165 points on the season and were one of the top lines, if not the best in the SMJHL. Panda left the league battered and bruised this year, setting a new SMJHL record with 349 hits on the season. Dolphin was one of the top two way players in the league and should be in contention for that award, and Kekalainen was an all-round offensive force.

On the other end of the ice, either of QCC's top lines were tough to match up against. That team has some of the biggest offensive weapons in the league such as Beranek, Maro, Salming, Slate, Next, and Koskinen and were a nightmare to match up against.

KnockedOut byOvechkin and Valtterri Kauppinen have been a pair of wingers that seem like they can’t stay off the scoresheet. It seems there’s not a game that goes by where I don’t see their names pop up. With each of them pulling in 57 points, they’ve been a massive part of Vancouver’s offense this year. They are also share a plus minus of -19, which on its face is not that impressive. But considering the defensive struggles Vancouver has faced this season, I think it’s actually quite impressive that our top offensive wingers have put the team on their back while maintaining a plus minus so close to even. Next season we expect to lose several key players, so the chemistry that they bring to the ice is going to become even more critical next season.

I came into this season hoping that my skills would be enough that I could break the third line. Instead, I spent the season on the fourth line. That's fine, I am perfectly content to "make my bones" and work my way up. This season I spent time on the fourth line with Mew Two and Jonas Caspari. You may not know our names now but once were up in the SHL the talent of my wingmates will surprise you. You saw flashes of it this season, we may have not been the highest scoring line but we did our job and helped Quebec City to one of the best records in Juniors history. How many other rookies or fourth liners can say that they helped to anchor one of the best teams ever? 39 points between the three of us but we still did our job and that makes us just as dangerous but as hungry as some of the other players on the lines above us. Because next season we are coming and we aren't going to stop until were first line heroes.
