S59 PT #1 Preseason
#46

There is little that we can truly know for sure going into the season, but one thing that you can bet the bank on is Guy Zheng keeping up his over two point per game pace. Coming out with a stellar pre-season, he is showing that he still has what it takes to absolutely dominate in this league. Playing for a blazing Atlanta Inferno team, he has shown that not only is his personal skill up to snuff, but that he has an incredible supporting cast around him to win that scoring race. My bold prediction to this is that he wins the scoring title by over 10pts. I guess the only remaining question leading into this season for Guy is 'was he just warming up?'. Clearly, he might have some rust he's shaking off going into the season, but it's clear that this pace is completely sustainable and that we're about to see a record breaking season.

Like many people with access to FHM, during preseason we run test after test after test to try and figure out what line setups might work best for our team, but to also get an early glimpse at playoff standings...and most importantly...casino line ideas.  One thing I noticed in my testing (and yes it can vary from computer to computer), which I will add that I was quite happy to see, is not that the Aurora made the playoffs again but that Toronto did for a second season in a row.  More importantly, Toronto made such an impact that in over half of the tests I ended up running, the North Stars made it into the SHL Finals!  Maybe its because they're stuck in the great lakes...maybe its because I have quite a few friends on that roster, but let me just say this:  If not the Aurora making a push for the finals, I would be very very happy to see Toronto in that push.

Well, the preseason results seem to indicate that New England has another long, disappointing season coming down the pike. I am really hoping that's not the case, but with our lower end TPE on the forward side of things, it's a potential that we do come in last place in the East with Baltimore and Tampa Bay continuing to build towards strong, competitive rosters. The Atlantic very quickly is turning into a baby version of the Great Lakes Division, with all teams significantly on the upswing, and Manhattan on the slow fall down. I am hopeful we can still find some lightning in a bottle with the addition of Finn Rhys and our defensive development, but finding goal support for Frans Eller and the New England defense will be difficult to say the least. It looks like it'll be yet another long, long season for the Danish netminder.

But what else is new.

While I never pay much attention to the preseason, I can still make massive predictions based on no information. Of course, I am going to say the the Steelhawks will hoist another cup, adding more to the dynasty team that is currently playing, but that is boring. I could say that New Orleans will have as many wins as shelter dog has testicles, but that's too easy to poke fun at. The real stretch prediction that I will make is about myself. I will not only be the first goalie in the league to score a goal, but I will be the first goalie ever to score a hat trick. Ignoring the barriers that make this a complete impossibility, the biggest one being that goalies can't score in Franchise Hockey Manager, I will still make this dream a reality. Fuck the rules, let me shoot the damn puck. I am truly sorry if you read this whole thing. Let's go Hawks.

There has been a growing concern around the league over the lack of therapists to help keep players calm, cool and collected. This has started to boil over to our skaters over the past few seasons. Fights are on the rise, bench clearing brawls aren't unheard of, and there have even been a few coaching scraps. It was believed initially that players were working with a doctor who was injecting players with testosterone right up into the buttock. But who really knows. All I can tell from in the pre season is that there will be a new level of aggression and anger from a new set of players. Ones that could player further apart from each other, and those are the goalies. Yes, those players who wear as many pads as they can stack onto their bodies. The same players who can barely even shout at each other. This season, get those tickets in hand, because it's going to be a wild display of goalie sticks to the face.

I do hereby declare that because of this preseason the Calgary Dragons will be fighting for first in the division with the Edmonton Blizzard, and it will be the closest they have ever been. This season will be one of the most down to the wire final game shenanigans we have ever seen. Which team will come out on top is relatively unclear, Edmonton has the current numbers behind them but with Chief Coach in Charge Wally to lead us, the Calgary Dragons are set to come in with an astounding amount of power, conviction, and chicken parms. This season will have the most down to the wire finish of any and all seasons, you better believe it! I do think the Calgary Dragons will come out on top, but it's entirely possible for the division to go either way. The new studs of Calgary will be magnificent and have amazing seasons.

I mean I could say Edmonton will continue on it's dominant pre-season pace and finish the regular season 66-0, but then I would be jinxing my own team and I don't want to do that now do I? Instead I'll look towards the bottom of the list and highlight the fact that the same familiar faces are struggling to put up wins. New Orleans and San Francisco are in the midst of a serious rebuild so I'll let them off, but Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Winnipeg and New England can't seem to get out of their own way. That being said I predict one of these teams will pull off a huge turnaround from pre-season to regular season form and post north of 30 wins. If I had to bet it would be New England, but Tampa Bay has been brewing for some time and could make the leap this year.

When looking at predictions for the upcoming season, I full believe Newfoundland will win the Four Star Cup. Newfoundland last year made it to the semi-finals with a very young team before losing to Anchorage, and we return almost fully loaded and improved in every way. While it will be hard to replace captain Vaseline Podcalzone, we were able to draft sniper Evil Allbran, who has already lit up the SMJHL in preseason. With every player except for Allbran hitting either the 350 or 425 cap, we shoud be heavy favorites to win the Cup. We only lost one game throughout the preseason, and consistently had high goal scoring numbers, showing we’re going to be a strong offensive team this season. We are also going to be a physical team again as many of our players have leaned into the hitting philosophy. In terms of Slavakov Vladimirashenko, I believe he is going to play better than his rookie year, probably getting around 30 points versus the 17 he got his rookie year.

Based off Edmonton's preseason results, anything less than a 66-0 season will be pretty disappointing. Without even trying and running auto-lines the first day of preseason, us Blizzard proved too strong even for the likes of Texas. This team is going to be an offensive powerhouse with Daniel LaForest emerging as one of the leagues best goal scorers. Look for him to put up 50 this season now that he doesn't have that bum Sutton on his wing. Speaking of Kyle Sutton, the guy worked hard on his shot this off with hopes of putting up at least 20 goals. What pre-season has shown us though is that all that hard work will make little difference as he will once again be sub 20 goals. In goal, the Padawan has become the Master. Scoochie Stratton finally free of Carpet's shadow has proven that he is the one of the leagues best goalies and will be hunting for a Mike Honcho Trophy, and almost certainly will be a candidate for the the John McBride.

Parade preparations are already underway in Edmonton.

Pre-season was literally different than previous season and seems like there might be some changes in next Play-Offs picture. Seems like Atlanta Inferno and Edmonton Blizzard might be really dangerous team this season. They both had perfect pre-season with seven victories and no losses.

Despite the fact Inferno and Blizzard are best teams right now if we base it on pre-season, Chicago Syndicate and Hamilton Steelhawks are still looking dangerous aswell. Toronto North Stars aren't looking weak either. It's surprising to see Texas Renegades falling a bit and Seattle Argonauts jumping higher. Baltimore Platoon getting higher is a surprise too. Buffalo Stampede, Calgardy Dragons and Manhattan Rage falling few spots are surprising aswell. All other spots are pretty much the same.

However, it's still only pre-season and it doesn't mean that much. Regular season will be completely different. Will be interesting to see what Atlanta Inferno and Edmonton Blizzard can provide. However - I think that there will be again same Finals as last season - Stampede versus Steelhawks.

My player was grade A trash in the preseason so I hope to God it's not an accurate depiction of what I'm gonna look like for my rookie year. I won't let that discourage me from my real goal in this league though: get more points than Pojo Biscuit.

From the test sims our GMs did, I should be able to at least do that. Which is not saying much but still. It's a start. I am not sure against which lines I played in preseason but if I play on the third pairing, I should be up against opponents that are more in my TPE range so it should make things easier for me.

Another indication that maybe preseason is useless, my teammate Magnus Liljestrom with his close to 1600 TPE had the worst stats on our team with an amazing -9 and no points. Seeing that doesn't make me too worried about what the season has in store for me. Just a little bit worried.

I predict that with our correct lines in, I'll get more points than bojo and I am content with that.

I think it may come as a shock to some but my prediction based upon the pre-season is that the New England Wolfpack are for real.... going to have a tough season. Mind you, I am not saying that we are going to lose more than we win, but when you look at the competition we face and how we are realistically a season or two away from being competitive for a playoff berth then it is the only conclusion that I can see. That said, I think people will come away surprised at how tough and gritty this team is. They will see a team that knows that it has to fight to win and I think we will be able to surprise a few people with a few wins that they did not expect us to have. New England won't be a cake walk on anyone's schedule and I think that the pieces are there to play spoiler to quite a few teams.

Chimkin Wing had three points in seven games, and was a +2… he had two goals and an assist, which is odd because he is a set up man and should have more assists than goals. I predict Chimkin Wing will hit 3 points with ease in the full season, and possibly even get one or two more points. He spent his time on the second line with some seriously good team mates, and still could only muster 3 points, probably because he is 400 TPE under the next lowest player on the team. It’s like fantasy camp for him, and it’ll be that way all season. Hopefully he’ll be at 1,000 TPE sooner rather than later, and even then he’ll still be leaps and bounds behind the rest of the team. But hey, when Buffalo decides it’s time to rebuild, hopefully they’ll decide to do it around Chimkin Wing… or trade him off for assets. Who knows.
