S59 mPT #4 Cup Favorite
#61

I think it goes without saying that any team from the great lakes division is often looked at as a favorite to win the cup. Outside of those 4 teams, I think the next best team in the league is Texas in the West. They have been a dominant force on both ends of the ice and I think they could make it all the way this season and take home the cup. They have all but clinched their division and conference winner position as the NW is trading wins too frequently to match up at the moment.

That being said..... If Minny can make the playoffs I will call them my favorite since that is the spot they hold in my heart.

The Hamilton Steelhawks are probably going to win because they're big doo-doo heads that just win all the time. Seriously though I'm hoping to see someone different take it home, like Toronto maybe.

Ayo fuck Hamilton. That play went out of style about 2 years ago. Hamilton is some pre-covid nonsense. I have no clue how but Winnipeg Aurora will win the cup, because fuck you that's why.

This answer might surprise you all, but the North Stars shall overcome all adversity and prove to you that we are the Superior Lake! We may be in fourth now, but when has being fourth in the entire league stopped us from winning the play-offs? Oh that is right, our insane play off system. I'm so upset I am going to spell playoffs three different ways.

North Stars for the cup!

I will go with Texas Renegades as favorites for the cup. They might not be best team in league by points but they have awesome goals for/against record and best defense and defense wins playoffs.

The favourite team to win the cup at the moment is of course Hamilton Steelhawks who lead the league with 81 points in 50 games. Second favourite must be Chicago with a record of 38-10-2.

Its hard to argue against anyone in this thread as the Hamilton Steelhawks project to be conference winners yet again with their dynasty scoring left and right on every shift

The nice thing and also strange thing about the SMJHL is that no matter how good or bad you are throughout the season you will still make it to playoffs. Every single team goes. So below I'll give a quick run down of the teams I believe should be in the running come playoff time:

Top Tier:
Kelowna, Detroit, Newfoundland
These three teams and you could probably successfully argue Anchorage as well have been absolutely dominant in the league so far in the regular season. If you were just to look at points alone Kelowna would be anyones top choice as the team to beat. These three teams lead their divisions and will all get a bye going into the playoffs giving them a guaranteed spot in the second round. You've got to assume the likelihood is one of these teams come away with the W.

Mid tier:
Anchorage, Quebec, Colorado, Carolina
These teams (with the exception of Anchorage who probably deserve to be with the above 4) have all been their or their abouts this season. With QCC COL and CAR all within 2 points of each other the end of season placing could go any way.
If I was to put money on one of those 3 teams making the leap it would be QCC. Why? You ask. They've done it before. If there was ever a team that knows how to successfully navigate playoffs its the citadelles.

Outsider: St Louis
What sort of a captain would I be if I didn't throw my own team into the mixer. This may look like a shallow attempt at building some locker room hope but you'd be wrong.
St Louis had a dismal first half of the season and no one from the team would argue that point, however, the second half of the season has seen them winning more than half of their games at that time. They have the Goalie with the most shut outs in net - the fearsome polar bear Ioreik Bearnson and they have just picked up an exciting free agent in Melvin Majestik-Moose.
So for those counting. Opposing teams will be up against a polar bear and a fucking moose in the playoffs. Just give us the trophy now Scarecrows Scarecrows

I think the favorite to win the SHL Cup this season are the Hamilton Steelhawks. They lead the league in points percentage (.810%), goals for (229), and goals differential (+111). They've dominated whether they are at home or on the road. Doesn't make sense to back any other team at this point.

I mean, I get the feeling a lot of people picked Hamilton or Buffalo and they are 100% correct. But I will say Texas or Toronto because weird things will happen in the playoffs this season I think! (I'm joking, we all know the 2 teams in the final.)

The regular season has seen Buffalo, Chicago and Hamilton taking a comfortable lead over the rest of the league, being closely followed by Toronto, despite the four of them not just being in the same conference, but even in the same division. So it's not going to surprise anyone that the expected cup winner will be one of the Great Lakes teams.

To see which one of these has the best shot at it, I have compared their intra-division results. So far, the four teams have played 28 games in their division.

Buffalo was involved in 14 games, and won 9 of them. Their remaining games are against Chicago and Toronto (2 each).
Hamilton was involved in 16 games, and won 7 of them. Their remaining games are against Chicago and Toronto (1 each).
Chicago was involved in 13 games, and won 7 of them. They have games remaining against all three other teams. Buffalo and Toronto 2 each, and 1 versus Hamilton.
Toronto was involved in 13 games, and won 5 of them. They have games remaining against all three other teams. Buffalo and Chicago 2 each, and 1 versus Hamilton.

Based on their wins so far, and games remaining, Buffalo seems to have the edge over the other 4 teams, with the best win record out of their played games against their divisional opponents. Of course, in the playoffs anything can happen, but the Stampede look up to the task and ready to win this cup.

Im rooting for Texas though. Would be nice if they could step it up a bit in the last stretch of the regular season and help me improve my fantasy score.

Shl? Probably Hamilton, because FHM. In the J? I'm going to be a Homer and put my money in the Carolina Kraken, because I'm gonna win the Cup. Not @micool132

I would love to see Texas win the cup. Texas has a very good team that can compete with the powerhouses in the Great Lakes. For the SMJHL, I am a homer and support Anchorage. The Armada have shown they can compete with the best of them and should be contending.

I expect this will be another year of domination from the Great Lakes. I think it'll be between Buffalo or Hamilton. Hamilton always seem to edge everyone else out so I'll stick with my preseason pick!

It's almost impossible not to see one of the Great Lakes teams as a favorite for the title with all 4 teams having more points than any other team does.
With that, I don't think it's possible to define one of the 4 as a favorite as all 4 has the potential to win it.
I think the only safe bet is to say, the Great Lakes will win the Cup.
