S62 PT#6: Wrap-up
#91

It was a season that we sort of expected here in Winnipeg. We didn’t expect a tremendously successful on-ice season with the roster as assembled. As we did in the previous season, the Aurora finished in the basement of the SHL standings, and with the best odds in the draft lottery. Also for the 2nd time in a row, we got absolutely screwed in the lottery itself. Unlike last season, where we moved from 1 to 2, we’ve been bumped back from 1 to 3 in an incredibly shallow draft. This draft lottery really, really sucked. I don’t see how it’s justifiable from the league’s perspective to say, hey, team that was CLEARLY the worst, you guys are gonna get bumped two spots because chaos is fun. It’s pretty damn frustrating.

Prompt 2

Not really sure what to say. Another season, another ATL first-round exit, but you know what, it's all good! The team is filled with great dudes and I'm really looking forward to the upcoming draft in the offseason. It's always fun to bring in new guys to the LR, speculations about the upcoming season, spamming hotdog nonstop to help us with our fantasy picks. It's all good times on ATL. I think after 2 seasons of the big leagues, I'm not going to get super hype on what Binder might be able to bring to the team, just plan on doing the tasks and hoping for the best.

The team that I have been placed upon is the peak players. These is the team that is just now hitting their stride and are reaching top parts of the league. One of the teammates is a team up with Sven Yxskaft. A call back to the four-star cup winning season with the Carolina Kraken, one of the people I have tremendous respect for in the league and carries themselves highly. Paired with Yxskaft we have one of my fellow Norwegian Adam Scianna. Someone who has been core for the Texas Renegades for almost a decade and will be for presumably another decade. Also on the team will be one of my friends and insane powerforward of the league Alexander Roach as well as his peaking S53 teammates Jack Kanoff, Steve harrington and Jaska Seppala. The second pair will be an homage to the annual goal scoring bet between Jukka Timonen and Magnus Liljestrom. In addition to them My fellow linemate Zoltan Topalo will continue to play along side me because we work well together.

As a member of the up and coming team. Our job is to go against the old guards of the league or the Grizzled Vets. Which is a great honor to be going against some of my idols of the league. One of the opponents would be Eko van Otter. Someone who has been at the top of the league throughout all of my hockey experience. Making the transition from being an elite forward to being a backbone hard nosed defensive player and someone that I have had the good fortune of playing alongside in Norway.
Paired with Otter would be Mathias Seger, a stout Swiss fellow who walks a little crooked from being pelted with the puck in Minnesota.
Manning the forward position would be Nick Brain and Jimmy Slothface. Slothface was someone who would be an MVP and an absolute monster the entire time. Nick Brain and Slothface both members of the British guard that are both elite members of the Great Britian team.
Another older member manning the net is Harry Carpet, someone who has been the franchise player for Toronto through thick and thin.
The game goes well for the up and comvers, we clapped the old player’s cheeks.

These hall of famers really won the game through mental prowess. First off they told us that SimonT was an ideal simulation hockey engine and that really shook a lot of us to the core. Also hit us with plenty of back in my day we only had fifty games in a regular season to get all of our stats. Which was a big shot to the ego especially of Michael Fitted. They then teased us by playing Crossfit Jesus in the middle of the third period and he did not even make it into the hall of fame. Just to showboat how much better than us they were. There were a lot of brainstorming on how our team is going to recover for the rest of this tournaments but the thing that got our mental back together was a healthy dose of a family dinner with Crybaby Cranberry sauce and Mommy Milker Mac n Cheese.
Well the guys and gals all went to the salon before the game and got bikini waxes in preparation for the absolute stomping we were about to put on the grizzled vets. We were all prepping to drop the meat trick for the fans and needed to be looking our best for the camera. I went to my longtime guy, Sampson. He creates the cleanest of creases you will ever find in the business. We were all set up to go in the ice, secretly looking fresh. We have dominated the grizzled vets and the puck has been in their zone constantly. Their first line was still on the ice was gassed from the constant pressure and five minutes in Zoltan Topalo starts off the scoring. Jaska Seppula and the buffalo squad was the next to score a few minutes later making our lead 2-0. It was difficult seeing eko van otter perform as a shell of his former self...but we were not going to let that stop us.  Zoltan then rattles off back to back goals starting in the second period giving him the hatty. We then start fooling around and it gets midway through the third period and everyone is rallying Trying their damndest to set up Zoltan for the 4 goal night. He kept hitting post after post and it felt like the grizzled vets were just playing prevent to stop the goal. Then all of a sudden a Zoltan finds the back of the net with 20 seconds to go and he does it. He whips it out and starts stroking it in true Joe Thornton celebration. The bench erupts and we celebrate like we just won the whole tourney! It was a night to remember.
As everyone is walking out of the tunnel and the crowd is electric. Many of my fellow superstars are just starting to feel butterflies in their stomach for the first time in years. Numbed by the exposure of high pressure situation after high pressure situation. This is different than all of those. This is a battle against history. A shot at revenge for being embarrassed earlier. The line of Minamino, Wagner and Alexander Roach starts off the game. As the puck drops Robert Phelps gets leverage on Roach's stick causing a yard sale. Phelps dumps the puck deep into our defensive zone as Jukka Timonen fields the puck. Mike Izzy lays down a booming hit that sends Jukka through the glass causing a stop in play. I look to Michael Fitted on the bench with surprise and say under my breath "Ah shit, here we go again". After 10 minutes of glass repair, play resumes but the mental damage to Jukka was done. He couldn't go back out on the ice and opted to sit down with our sports psychologist.

Optional: Starting out I didn't think too much about the writing prompt. I had no idea where things were going just picked prompt 1 because it was the first one but as the weeks went on and on. I started looking forward to the story that was being put together. Starting week 4 of the prompts I had become invested in the point tasks and looked forward to the next creation so much so that I wanted to turn it into a proper story. Time limitations prevented me from writing more than 200 words on subjects that I want to write 800+ words on. which is why the story is so choppy between each prompt and incomplete. This brought a lot of joy and excitement to the league that I forgot was part of the reason I fell in love with this league in the first place. Thank you Slash.

Prompt #2

As much as it sucked finding out that I'll be regressing a season earlier than anticipated, I'd still say S62 has been my favourite season to date with the SHL. I had a lot of fun in the locker room with the rest of the Blizzard family, I also really enjoyed watching the seasons of our 5 rookies unfold and was blown away by the contributions they all made. Any one of them could be considered for rookie of the year, and I look forward to seeing the awards nominations when released. I also would expect to see a couple of them named to the all rookie teams. Was a career year for Sutton, one that I look forward to trying to replicate and surpass in S63. Blizzard

What to talk about with the SHL?

Well I think the hot topic is the early regression being tossed on all the current non regressing players shortening our career more than we wanted. Not only does it take out a lot people out at the knees un announced, I don't think this fixes any of the current problems. They choose to fix this at the wrong end of things. THey should have made it so those starting were aware of the potential shorting rather than take out people who have worked so hard to get to where they are already. Really silly decision from the league in an attempt to create false parity.

Prompt 2

Holy crap how did we lose to the Beserkers again? I wasn't even on the team the other times and what kind of garbage sim luck is that? That was not the way I wanted my best chance at a cup to go, but c'est la vie. That is how the cookie crumbles. Now I look on to the WJC where I will finally get to represent my home country of Czechia in the UCORCAL conglomerate. Hopefully I can at least obtain a bronze medal like I did last season with the Finnorway team (I was a loan?). Here goes nothing! U COR CAL!

This season sure has been something out of the ordinary. Earlier then normal drama with the regression and Tampa Bay has looked good this whole year. I will say it has been a blessing in disguise to stay in Tampa Bay with so many great people. I think one of my favorites that I've probably grown close to over the course of this past season is our boy @Rangerjase . It originally started in Tampa Bay DnD night, but now more often then not we shoot the shit, and hes just a great dude to have in the locker room and to have a good time with. You sexy fuck you.

PT #1

Prompt 1

Magnus Liljestrom stepped into the locker room and looked around to see familiar faces. The Superstars team consisted mainly of his fellow S53 players, many of whom he had come up through the ranks with in the Juniors as a member of the extremely strong S53 draft. There was the British Bruiser Edward Williams @Aephino as Center, although these days he'd gone fully into his Texas Renegades persona and sported a black cowboy hat and bandanna habitually; right winger Ryuuji Minamino @Nhamlet from the Chicago Syndicates, who tipped his fedora at Magnus when they locked eyes; left winger Sven Svenson @LordBirdman who was trying to describe something to Williams using extremely animated (and rude) hand gestures; and his future defensive partner/heated rival Jukka Timonen @juke, who was already getting up to greet him as he walked to the stall with his name and jersey.

"Timonen, you son of a bitch!" said Magnus as they walked towards each other.

Their hands smacked together in a macho display of pure testosterone and bulging muscles, catching the attention of everyone else in the room.

Timonen's arm started wavering as Liljestrom squeezed harder.

"What's the matter, Chicago has you pushing too many pucks?" Magnus' grin grew larger.

"Make it easy on yourself Lily - OK OK OK, enough!" said Timonen, as he gave up. "You never did know when to quit, did you, huh?"

"Damned good to see you, Timmy," said Magnus. "Let's get down to business."

PT #2

Prompt 1

Magnus settled into his position as both teams squared up at center ice. Team Up-and-Comers were the first opponents they would face in this tournament, and they had a pretty good roster. Not as good as the Superstars, but good.

With the puck dropped by the referee at center ice, both teams sprang into action. Edward Williams out-muscled Jonathan Granstrom off the puck at center, swept it back and neatly onto Jukka Timonen's stick. Magnus moved up ice, ready to receive the breakout pass from Timonen, which he neatly tapped forward with his skate to his stick as he crossed the line. He saw Finn von Murphenstein lining him for a hit, so a little juke to avoid him and then Magnus put the puck in the slot for Ryuuji Minamino, who had driven in and used Williams' body as a pick for his defender. Minamino fired off a heavy shot towards the net, but Jon St. Ark managed to use his blocker to deflect it out of play as Sven Svenson stood there screening him.

No goals yet, but the Superstars had let the youngins know that they were going to be in for a game.

PT #3

Prompt 1

It all seemed so easy. There was an enticing opening left open by Gabriel Johnson, where Magnus could've carried the puck through and caused a chance in the slot - but a few seconds later it was a 3-on-2 going back the other way where Eko Van Otter put the puck up high past Jobin who could only watch helplessly as the shot sailed past him. He replayed the sequence in his head, how Johnson baited him in, stripped him of his puck and sprung the Old Farts Team for an odd-man rush. The rest of the game tightened up defensively, but every single mistake that happened was exploited ruthlessly. The old farts seemed to know where to be to cause the maximum chaos, to take advantage of any little weakness shown by the Superstars.

After that defeat, Magnus knew that he had much more to learn, and that he would be staying up late reviewing game tape. Seems like the old dogs still had some tricks left in them.

PT #4

Prompt 1

Last time, the Grizzled Vets got the better of us, as they had tricks up their sleeves that we hadn't seen. They might be old, but they had experience and the wiliness to use them. Gabriel Johnson managed to make me look foolish as he nutmegged the puck past me and joined in on an odd-man rush, leading to the game-winning goal.

However, this time we were wise to their tricks, and used our physical advantages to overcome their old men bodies. It was a tight game, with both sides playing crushing defense, and there was a lot of back-and-forths on the ice. We got a little chippy too as we didn't want to let the old farts win. The game-winning goal was probably a bit of a dirty play, but the ref wasn't looking and I managed to slow Aaron Wilson long enough for our scoring winger Ryuuji Minamino to break free and let off a wicked shot, which bounced off both posts and in, for the game-winning goal. Wilson was pissed and was yelling at the ref, but there hadn't been a penalty called so we were good in that regard.

Next up... whoever we're facing next.

PT #5

Prompt 1

So, here it was. The final game, this time against the Hall-of-Famers. Not sure how these old coots are still gamely hanging on, but they are and they haven't been easy customers for the previous teams. You'd have expected them to wither away and die, or fall down and break a hip or something.

That's OK. We can beat them with treachery and youth. Now that we have lessons from the Old Timers, and the secure knowledge that we're at our peak.

The puck drops, we battle for 60 minutes, and in the end, we had a late goal that sealed the deal. A perfect lob pass from me to Minamino, who streaked in and beat their goalie up top for that picture-perfect game-ending goal. As the clock wound down we mobbed together at center ice, celebrating our win and enjoying the feeling. Maybe we can meet up again at the all-star game, but for now, this was our victory to savour.

Prompt 2: I think Salzberger Lillehammersson and the Atlanta Inferno had some kind of a disappointing season, even if we didn’t expect to make it far into the playoffs. My offensive production decline by two points which is really not something you want to see when you are a young player. My offensive game rating is really close to last season, but my defensive game rating has increased by four which is a positive, but it is not really reflected in my stats since my plus minus went from -18 last season to -27 this season. Hopefully, I improve these numbers next year.

Like others have stated, I think this is an end of an era in SHL. And since it's allowed by the prompt, I think this is an appropriate venue for me to voice my absolute frustration with the way that regression was handled, despite some of those worries being assuaged by the changes after what seemed like a couple dozen pages of backlash -- and those that stood to benefit the most from the initial set of changes being in full support of them. It was an important lesson in implementation and administrative wherewithal probably for all involved -- and lets those considering/trying to establish new sim leagues know that this whole 'being the boss' thing doesn't come without significant difficulties.

Thanks @Amidships!

I thought it was a pretty solid rookie season for my player.  Getting a point in every other game as a fourth liner with limited minutes was cool, and it also pointed out some holes in my game I need to fix.  I think the only thing I want to vent about is the fuggin regression changes.  I have no idea what they are so I'm only doing this because everyone else is.  One of the main goals for my player was to make an iron man career and regress all the way back down to 150 TPE honestly, and I wanted to hit some kind of games played record for the SHL, but with harsher regression I doubt that will happen.  Oh well, it is what it is.

As I come up on 2 years since I joined the site I just want to say how much I enjoy being a part of this community. So many people out there are just looking to have fun, and this is a great place to do it. We all share good times and bad times and fun times and :emotehere: times. Its always nice to take a step back and remember what makes this so much fun for each of us. I feel like i've grown as a site member and person in these two years, especially with Covid and quarantining and general isolation. Each new chapter in Detroit as well as Tampa that i've been a part of. Its been fun, I don't plan on going anywhere, just looking towards a fun future on the site.

I'd love to have more fun with writing media than I do, but it's just writing the same draft article every month. Also real life has been kind of rough for the past couple of months, so I haven't even really had the time to keep up with shitting out that same draft recap every season. Gotta find some time to keep up with it this time, though, since my bank account is starting to get low. Maybe I should parlay the safe casino bets next season, assuming I write enough money out to make that possible. Maybe this offseason I'll ignore double draft media entirely and go for quantity over quality; write a bunch of random bullshit with nothing to do with the draft and make some bank that way. I suppose I'll figure it out as I go. Time is the real issue, no matter what I decide to do. Oh well, we shall see.
