a. You can never take success for granted, but these are two of the league's heavy favorites coming into the cup finals. Pick either of our finalists, and tell me what about them impresses you the most!
b. New England vs Winnipeg makes this a rematch of the S70 finals! What does Winnipeg have to do differently to take round two, two seasons later, in season seventy-two?
c. The Aurora defeated the Blizzard in their conference final, and the Wolfpack sank the Forge. Who had the more impressive victory to punch their ticket to the cup final, and why?
d. If it ain't broke don't fix it: Who you got? Who wins? Why?

a. The S70 finals is a repeat of the S70 matchup which saw NEW surprisingly beat WPG in a tight 7 game series. For this season, I will have to say WPG is the more impressive team since this is their 4th straight appearance in the finals. WPG has been one of the most dominant teams for quite a while now and have been looking to capture the elusive cup. I think most people have picked WPG to win the cup in their season and playoff preds so a lot of the league feels the same way as well.

(98 words)

b. I'm not quite sure what WPG can do differently this time around since the last time these two faced off in the finals, it went to 7 games and in a 7th game it truly is a coinflip as to how FHM will decide to play the game out. WPG can look to mix up their lines/tactics and have balanced lines so that NEW can't look to target weaker lines for line matchups.

(74 words)

c. I will say that the WPG Aurora beating the EDM Blizzard was the more impressive feat in comparison because EDM was the 2nd ranked team TPE wise overall in the league (WPG is ranked 1st) and WPG was able to defeat the Blizzard in only 5 games while the NEW and PHI series went the distance to 7 games where it could have gone either way (good thing it went NEW's way since I picked them in my playoff bracket to win the East).

(84 words)

d. My heart wants WPG to win because they have been a strong team for many seasons in a row and should have won a few cups by now. But after seeing WPG lose all these times in the cup finals, I wouldn't be shocked to see NEW winning the cup again this season and ruining a lot of predictions.

Winnipeg is a cup finalist for an astonishing fourth year in a row! To make that happen in the current era of the SHL requires serious skill and deserves appreciation. What is it that makes this Aurora era so successful? What have been the most crucial factors in their Western dominance? What lessons should the rest of the leak learn from their success?

Since I was part of the S62 draft class (which WPG had a lot of picks in) this is their competitive window and is why they have been able to make 4 straight cup finals. Having strong and incredible users like RashfordU (who eventually became their Co-GM) and Sburbine who is the current NL Co-GM and eventually drafting Jess in S63 have led the way in their core as to why they have been such a strong team. They also have made some significant deals as well by acquiring Miguel Hefeweizen from SFP, Noel Blanchet from BAP and this season they acquired Max Manning from SEA in the off-season to bolster their offense as we have seen in the FHM 8 era how offense is the key to winning games and no matter how strong your defense/goalie are the goals will be rampant in games.

Other teams can look to WPG's success by drafting well and sign/trade for players to compliment the core for their competitive windows.

3. Four straight years in the finals, we shall see if this is the year their core can have that final push. LEG, Rashford, O'Neil, Kinsinger, Montagne have been the beefy arms, jacked legs, and shredded torso of the Shiny Bears for years. They have the skill and the dedication to stay at the top of their game and help make that team great. They have all been award nominees, award winners, and all-stars for most of those seasons. With a top line and top pair like that, it helps out the lower lines as well as they all get favourable matchups. The Aurora draft well, which allows them to trade those good future players for win now players, hopefully giving them that last boost to win the cup this season. So draft well, trade well, play well seems to be the winning combination for a dynasty. Seems easy enough for everyone to do. 153 words, 3TPE

12. Well looks like Winnipeg finally pulled it off. LEG crushing it up front all series, and Montagne holding down the fort with back to back shutouts at home. It must have been very demoralizing for New England to lose an OT game at home, to then go on the road and get shutout two straight. Coming home down 3-1 makes it very mentally tough, and it looks like they just didn't have anything left. For NE, I would say their high powered offense let them down. Lead the league in goals only to be shut out twice is not a good look. I am happy for Winnipeg to finally get it done, those guys deserve it. 118 words, 2TPE

Let's go with Winnipeg. They have dominated again in regular season, and in the playoff too. They're now in their fourth presence in a row in the final. You would think that with time, their best player would aged, and that would put the team for a rebuild, but no, they're at the top again to avenge their lost in S70.

d. If it ain't broke don't fix it: Who you got? Who wins? Why?

Ill take Winnipeg again, and hope this time I wont jinx it. Its now their 4th presences in a row, and I think that this time will be their win. They still have the better team, they have a good attack, and a very strong defensive core with 1 strong goalie. They have probably the most complete team of the league, and this time it will pay off.

Do you foresee any specific upsets in this season's IIHF? Any risers or fallers that might be hot takes? If not, why do you think the best will stay the best?
Last IIHF campaign, the Swiss side surprised many with a fourth place finish in the tournament. They are in very good position to do it again, possessing one of the best defensive cores in the tournament - all either in or approaching their prime - and a sound goalkeeper in Rebecca Montagne. If the goals can show up as well, they can snag another deep run and potentially medal. Yes I know I'm biased, no I don't care. Reigning champs Ireland once again possess a pretty strong group as well, they'll have to be looked at as a team that can win it all again. Or they'll get grouped because Ireland is either medaling or flopping, no in between. For a faller, I think Japan reached their peak the last couple seasons - many of their current roster are either too young to make a difference, or are getting long in the tooth and not as effective.

But who knows. IIHF is unpredictable.

Looks like [TEAM] won Season 72! Who won and why? What could the other team have done differently to change the result? What was your favorite part of the series?
The Winnipeg Aurora have finally done it, after 3 years of reaching the final hurdle and tripping up, finally they get their hands on that elusive Challenge Cup in a five game series win over the New England Wolfpack. The big momentum changer was Game 2 heading to overitme - had Winnipeg lost this, they would've gone down 2-0 looking at a likely fourth straight finals loss. But they got it done early in OT and utterly seized momentum heading back to Manitoba. New England didn't recover at all, as Rebecca Montagne pitched back to back shutouts while the Aurora's talented offense flexed its muscles to a combined score of 9-0. The Wolfpack fought back in Game 5, but Winnipeg scored twice in the third to wrap it up, and well-deserved as well - over the five games they just flat-out outplayed New England, their offense was on point and on home ice they locked it down defensively.

At this point, I think Winnipeg simply needs a bit more luck to go their way. There were never outclassed in these two finals, and they seem to lose overtime game in the final every year. If they can snatch one of these game that goes all the way to overtime, then it could be enough for them to grab the championship.

d. If it ain't broke don't fix it: Who you got? Who wins? Why?

I think Winnipeg will win the league playoffs title this season. Their core is at maturity, they have lost in the last two finals, so their motivation will be higher than ever, and it might be one of the last proper shots they have at winning the playoffs while keeping everyone of these players together which should take their motivation level to the max.

How many more kicks at the can will these teams have with their current cores? Winnipeg has been unbelievably dominant with four straight wins of the Western conference. The Wolfpack have been one of the best teams in the league for several seasons running as well. For how long are these two cores going to keep themselves in that top echelon? Which teams will be their biggest threats next season?

I think that both the New England Wolfpack and the Winnipeg Aurora will be really good against next season. However, I do think that the Wolfpack are in the better spot as who will be the biggest threat for the next few seasons. Winnipeg still has a really good number of elite players, however, only three of their players were draft after S62, which means regression will start to hit their best player quite significantly and it will get worse as the seasons come. The prospects pool is also quite small. Of course, I’m assuming Winnipeg will want to continue with their current core and not trade some of these players for prospects. On the opposing side, the Wolfpack have nine players that were draft after S62 and most of these players are developing nicely, so I expect them to be able to replace the team’s veterans as in their current role once they are fully developed. The only worry for New England is between the pipes.

It's no secret that Winnipeg is one of the darkest, cruelest, and coldest cities in Canadia. A city so cold, it would make a Bolshevik shiver. A city so bleak, it'd make a vampire weep. And a lot of people there can be kind of mean. If you want to survive the elements of such a place, one must become attuned to the sleet and slush and general discontent, and that really comes through as steely grit and dogged determination from this group of savage hockey-ists. Ruthlessness, cunning, and possessing a natural resistance to ice-based attacks and debuffs grants this group of malcontents a major advantage over teams that just aren't as exposed to climes as harsh as Winnipeg. They work out a lot, too, at least an hour a day, so that probably counts for something when they get out there and play. Also maybe jailtime? You didn't hear that from me, though.

The New England Wolfpack have two defensemen and seven forwards that went over a point per game in the regular season, and one in Ivan Lackasmus that lapped it with over two points per game. They haven't slowed down in the playoffs either, so they aren't just inflated by hot games against the tanks. What is it that makes the Wolfpack's offense so incredibly lethal? Can it be imitated, or only envied? Will it be enough to get them another cup with this core?

Much like their Manitoban counterparts, these literal wolf-men were raised and developed in the thick and dense forests of coastal New England, emboldened and enriched by the briny sea air and the fierce competition amongst their canine brethren to see who will be lucky enough to eat that night, but also how to work together as a good wolf pack should. These formative translate on the ice as indominable support structure that takes the form of an iron curtain defense and forwards who just can't help but fire piss-missiles so hot, they'll melt the mascara right off your face. Given the advent of an even point spread, it just goes to show that teamwork does, indeed, make the dream work. However, every pack is led by the alpha, and that's precisely what we see in young Ivan Lackasmus. I've seen that guy eat glass with no milk, doesn't even hurt him. Such a cohesive unit will take every morsel of hockey know-how to find a weakness to exploit.

Do you have any IIHF teammates that play on division rivals in the SHL? How do you feel about sharing jerseys with them? Have you or your player made any friends on their IIHF team that they never would have otherwise?
I don’t find playing with rivals in IIHF to be too weird. There are players who you will battle in the standings and face off during the SHL season, but then when IIHF rolls around, it’s all about doing what is necessary to win the gold medal for your country. The common background, and common goal, allows us to put our grudges away and work towards making our family and friends back home happy. It’s a nice change of pace. Without the IIHF tournament, you would really start to dislike these guys. And of course, there have been friends made from playing in these tournaments. But truthfully, all these people know each other since we have been the top hockey players of Switzerland for years. Even back as children we were mostly all close knit and playing together. Some players have weeded out, but we know everyone and it allows us to have that chemistry on the ice.

Well I have to be completely honest that the thing that impresses me the most about the Winnipeg Aurora is that they are back in the Challenge Cup again. Back to back appearances in the big game is a tough thing to manage, three consecutive so much more so, but four is absurd. To give a comparison to real life sports it has happened once in the Super Bowl era in the NFL, five times in the NBA over that same span only two though before super teams became a thing, just once in the MLB in that time, and twice in the NHL in that time frame. So they deserve a ton of credit for making it back there a fourth time regardless of whether they win or not. Which I can update due to procrastination that they did making it all the more impressive.

It looks like the Winnipeg Aurora won the Season 72 Cup! I am going to say they won because the SHL is not as evil to them as the 90s NFL was to the Bills as that is the closest comparison I have as someone who knows next to nothing about hockey. The other team could have scored more goals and allowed fewer as scoring more points than your opponent is how you win a game. My favorite part of the series was the end where it made a friend of mine happy as they definitely deserve it after all the work that they have put into the league even just in my time here. They make the league a better place to be and it is nice that they got rewarded for that after some brutal previous seasons.

IIHF-10. (3tpe)

I think one riser will be Latvia. We were at the bottom and do not have much worse to go, but we had a good S72 Class and I feel we are progressing well and will have a good core with that moving on. Have had some GM changes and non-stable position there, but I do feel our group all together is strong and growing great together. I think in a couple season or closer to our peaks we are going to have some killer lines, but each offseason we are just going to be getting better and better. Will surprise some people there. Having that core group grow together is important and should be able to see the progress as we keep going and one of our guys will be uncapping which should be big and then in the next two seasons I will be also doing the same and billy should be too and that group will be strong to compete for a long time. Hopefully some others along the way can get us to a place where Latvia has not been able to be in a very long time.

What impresses me the most about the Winnipeg Aurora is the pure consistency, since I joined the league I can not remember any season final not having the Winnipeg based team. Of course it is surprising they have never won it, but they should win it one day, or to be fair it would be more consistent to keep losing them now I guess.

I would say the New England Wolfpack has the more impressive list of victories to get to the final. Where Winnipeg beat the Edmonton Blizzards with an impressive 4-1, the Chicago Syndicate with 4-1, and the New Orleans Spectes with 4-0, the New England Wolfpack managed to beat the Philadelphia Forge who were champions 3 seasons ago in a 4-3 win, and the Montréal Patriotes with 4-1 who themselves beat last seasons champions the Buffalo Stampede with 4-1, and the Tampa Bay Baracuda.

I personally still got the Winnipeg Aurora to win it all, this is despite having what I think is the easier path to the finals, the Aurora looks like one really strong team, the highest TPE team in the league (at least the last time I looked at this), and still has the foundation of the team who got the finals for the past few seasons, that consistency needs to one day lead to the tile, right?

After all these season it finally happened, the Winnipeg Aurora have won the cup, after the past 3 seasons where they could just not win the final it finally happened. For sure a big part to this win was the building of the team, which was obviously not just done to get 1 great season, with hopefully a cup win, and then fade away. But it was made to be good enough to get multiple cup runs, and thus multiple chances to get the cup win, to now after 3 lost finals finally win it all. For the Wolves there wasn’t too much they could have done better, it are 2 absolutely great teams and like seen 2 seasons ago the result could have gone the other way as well.
