Dirty tricks and how to stop them: the Pro Hockey Defender's quest since the dawn of ice. Small stuff, even as insignificant as chirping after the play, could be seen as a dirty trick. Trying to get under your opponent's skin, needle them into making a mistake. It's the psychological side of the game, and tests the focus of each and every player. That being said, Roddy learned from his father, and the two share a love of getting in the extra little nudge after the whistle, pushing and shoving and chirping. Escalation, to agitate the opponents, is key to undermining their control of the game.

Roddy shares a deep love of a handful of little tricks. His favourite is a little poke to the back of the knee with the toe of his stick, when players mingle after whistles and between plays. Off the draw, he loves to pivot, swing a heavy hip into the other Center, and sweep the puck back to his team from the other side of the circle. Also, the stinky glove is a time-honoured tradition that Roddy enjoys continuing.

However, the other team will also do these things. In order to keep things calm, cool, and collected on the ice, Roddy makes a point of finishing his checks, and aiming a heavy body for the most annoying opponent whenever he finds the chance to do so. Making yourself known on the ice, establishing a physical presence, is key to keepign your teammates safe from hijinks.

Derek is generally a pretty stoic, rational, calm and serious guy. He treats everything he does in life with the utmost respect the situation deserves, so while he generally wouldn't go so low as to pull off ''pranks'', he'll generally buy into the idea if presented by some of his own teammates when he can see value in them. Often times, it would have to do with team bonding, getting the good vibes back after a tough loss, breaking in a rookie to make them feel part of the team, and more good reasons. So while there isn't one specific thing in which he finds pleasure, joy, enjoyment and laughter, its the general idea on a more meta and philosophical level that gets to him. If there was something to really point out specifically as to being a thing he enjoys, call him beige, or basic, or uninteresting perhaps, but there's some level of comfort in the all time classics, and Derek knows you can generally never go wrong with a quality whoopee cushion on a chair!

Locker room pranks are a staple of any team in the SHL, and as a veteran of the league, Justin Time has seen them all. In the early days of his career in Quebec City and then as an SHL youngster in Edmonton, he was quick to join in, giving as good as he got as rowdy players messed with equipment, interrupted TV interviews, and generally made a nuisance of themselves. Locker room antics are a younger player's game, though, and as Time is settling into the back half of his career he's been more hands off and focused on his own game. Of course, the Pride are a veteran team with very few young players these days, a side effect of building a competitive roster over so many years, and that's led to a quieter, more tight knit feeling in the locker room. There are plenty of jokes still to be made, but for now the team is all business.

I have never been one to pull pranks on others, just not my thing. April 1 has always just been another day for me. However, because I am so far on the side of not pulling pranks on others, I think that only makes me more of a target for my teammates. It has become a tradition in the Texas locker room that when April Fool's Day rolls around, something is going to be done to McCarthy. One year, my entire locker was cleared out and all of my stuff was put in one of the goal nets. Another year, they somehow changed all of the times on my phone so that I arrived 3 hours early for a practice, and I did not notice it until I got to the rink and not a single person was there. It is all in good fun though, I really enjoy seeing what my teammates come up with each year, even if it is at my expense!

Some do consider Nash to be a prankster. Sitting a little lower to the ground being around tall players its hard for others to see or hear him coming. For a good while Nash would like to “table” people where you stand behind them in the locker room, get them to take a little step back and they would just fall right over you. It always gave Nash a good snicker kind of laugh, and he always made sure to help his teammate up afterwards. We are all fans of the innocent pranks and nothing that is truly all that harmful. We replace shaving cream with whipped cream and sometimes prank outsiders that don’t know what’s going on. We even tricked the media into thinking we were eating the shaving cream and it was boosting our play and morale around the locker room. Its always fun to work with teammates to find the next thing to do.

Scar Bealey really isn’t the type of person to play pranks. Don’t get me wrong, Scar isn’t devoid of having a sense of humor or something. In fact, Scar is probably the funniest person on the entire Scarecrows’ roster. However, prank pulling isn’t really his thing. He finds it slightly childish to a degree. Also, to him, it’s one thing to say some words and mess with teammates, and it’s another to hide something they need, or damage something of theirs. Granted, that isn’t how most pranks go, but either way, just doesn’t work for Scar. As for being a victim of the pranks that his teammates pull on each other, or attempt to pull on Scar? Don’t be silly. Scar is too perceptive to fall for any of his teammates’ pranks. They’re too obvious with what they try to pull off, that he notices something is up before disaster strikes. Scar Bealey: hilarious, and smarter than the other Scarecrows. (160)

Lasse Zeigler is a huge prankster. He is always pulling silly gags on his teammates, coaches, general managers, and everyone else involved with the team. “I remember once,” Lasse Zeigler said in an interview, “back in Season 72 in St. Louis, we were in the second round of the playoffs, facing off against the Newfoundland Berserkers, game 3 if i remember right. Our GM at the time, @TheSparkyDee always wrote notes during the game to come into the locker room and yell at us to play better and to tell us what we did wrong. So while he left to use the bathroom, I quickly grabbed his pen and wrote ‘Sparky Sucks’ on it. During that intermission, he started yelling at us… “Tomato! Shoot more! We know you can score! Zeigler! Find Tomato, let him snipe it in! And Sparky Sucks… oh wait…” Everyone burst out laughing. He was getting so into it, he never realized what he said until after it came out of his mouth.

MattyJ is not known as an off the ice prankster. However, on the ice, he will do whatever possible to gain an advantage on his opponents. Getting in the enemies heads is the ideal goal. Whether it is a trip behind the refs on the rush, or an occasional slew foot, MattyJ has his antics. The most important thing is just making sure the refs aren’t watching. He does hope the refs are looking during the retaliation though. These antics rile up the other team and get in their heads. This goes along with a ton of trash talk during the entire game. Getting the opponents to play with their anger instead of their mind can tilt the ice in your favor.

As far as changes to prevent this, I believe nothing should be done. Antics are apart of the game of hockey, especially when you are in the postseason. I actually hope more antics occur because it is fun for the fans.

Jamie Fraser is generally an honorable combatant, but there is a limit to this of course. There's no honor in attacking someone from behind when they are not looking, but history is often written by the victors and winning is the core priority. In modern sports, this intensity has been lessened somewhat, but there is of course still a "better to win at all than to lose with honor and tools still in the pocket" mentality held by many - Jamie Fraser included. He is not one to throw dirty hits or play with the intent to injure someone, but any and all gamesmanship is in play for the young hothead highlander who traveled through time. Chirps, chippy play, antagonizing behavior, and tricky deception are all in play and used as much as reasonably expected. Some would say that it is not "winning the right way", but the "winning" part of that phrase is the most important to Fraser.

The favorite trick Dag-Otto likes to pull on new players joining the team is probably the favorite trick of all swedes traveling abroad. And that is offering people a special type of candy that is rarely seen outside Sweden. This candy is of course salty licorice. Most people have experience sweet licorice and may or may not like it. Salty licorice is very different. But thanks to red and sweet licorice, people can often be convinced to try this salty candy I'd you just tell them it's "Swedish licorice".

Then Dag-Otto just sits back and waits for the inevitable look of betrayal and panic on his teammate's face as they quickly realize there's nothing sweet about this candy at all. As a matter of fact, it's instead extremely salty.

At this point it's practically a right of passage. So far the only people who didn't immediately spit this candy out are other European players.

1; Jefferson isn't much of a prankster in his day to day life, but when you're stuck with the same guys day in and day out, things can get a little stale and sometimes the mood can be a little iffy, especially in the throes of a losing streak. In order to lighten up the mood, Jeff likes to go with some of the classic pranks -- ketchup packets under the toilet seat, saran wrap over the toilet bowl, rigging the toilet to spray rather than flush, you know, classic toilet pranks. He's gotten a lot of warnings from the janitorial staff who are pretty sure he is to blame, but they've never really caught him in the act so it's all circumstantial evidence at best. To get back at them, he filled their office with hundreds of live frogs. If you don't see how that's a prank, well, take a moment and really think about it. The best works of art are subtle.

You know what they say - if you ain't cheating you ain't trying. I am not going to say you need to do some elaborate conspiracy to rig the games or anything like that but you can try to squeeze in those marginal pieces that give you a competitive edge. A little "oops" when trying to steal the puck and accidentally slashing a bit? It is just part of the game. Sneaking that puck just back over the line when there was an arguable call so that the play isn't capped against you? That's sports. Everyone is looking for the edge when you can and playing on the edge of the gray area is smart to do. You gotta make the officials job hard and hope things break your way. The skill gap is generally quite small so those marginal gains are the difference between 2 points for you and 2 points for someone else. You can go to bed feeling like you played your best and still lose or you can go to bed at 7am after winning the cup. I will take the cup please.
