S78 PT #2: It Was All a Trick! Due: Sunday, August 25th @ 11:59 PM PST

Written Option 2:

Jean-Jacques François Jacques-Jean thinks tricks are not an unfair advantage. Tricks are part of hockey and players who do not use them are usually not as good as those who use everything that the game offers to them to pull ahead in the rink. He uses everything that there is, it is always important to check the refs position to know what to do. The best trick does not help if you spend minutes in the penalty box each game (unless that is the trick, it sure works sometimes too). The favorite part of his game is to get the other team riled up. That includes hits, hard hits, preferably on players that are not used to take those hits. That riles the other team up, it gets them to make mistakes, often costly mistakes. Especially when they feel the ref is against them and they get angrier and angrier at some point they will do something stupid and that is the time to strike.

Sonja is usually not the type of player that uses tricks. She prefers to win fair and square and as such she avoids using tricks pretty much at all costs. As for her idea how to prevent those from happening is rather easy actually. Being a fan of Soccer, she things introducing a system like VAR would be quite benefitial. After all even if the ref is not looking, having cameras set up around the ice would give the ref a great chance to have a look at an action and see if there was actual foul commited or not. Of course it would need to be regulated in some manners as we do not want to waste time too much either. Maybe there could be a set amount of uses for this system and the one commiting the trick could be given some penalty minutes to discourage them from doing those tricks. As such there would be less tricks to look back on and of course the original goal would be accomplished too as we could reduce the amount of tricks used.

Ubba Lodbrok, third liner for the Philly Forge, of the Simulation Hockey League, formerly of the ANchorage Armada, of the Simulation Major Juinor Hockey League, is no stranger to pranks in the locker room. Pranks in the locker room, as long as they're tasteful and cause no physical harm to anyone or their property (i.e. no lighting cars on fire, no broken bones. ALthough, a black eye or some bruises are totally okay). So he likes to light up the locker room at times to keep things light. Especailly on long roadies, and especially at the hotels. Knowing they only have a night or two in each room, it's great for him to prepare ahead of time. But sometimes, it's the spur of the moment and a situation that beckons for a few pranks to be had at others expense. Sometimes that's a stink bomb thrown in a room, sometimes it's ordering 3 pizzas in the middle of the night, sometimes it's a frozen fish in the hidden part of a suitcase.

Kirby is not much of a prankster, he’s much more into making jokes and laughing at teammates when he can. However, because of this, his teammates do like to play pranks on him. Unfortunately he’s very trusting and it has led to a lot of pranks being successful on him, like the age old clear tape on the skate blade during practice. Falling flat on your face is never fun.

One of the more annoying ones was when a couple guys had soaked his equipment and when he went to put it on it was all damp and gross. Thankfully they were nice enough to do it during a practice, because that would definitely get someone off their game. Probably the most unlikely one that was completely unexpected was when his tape on his stick was covered in Vaseline. It took a while to figure out why he couldn’t catch a pass or shoot.

Jaden isn't one to take advantages of lapses in the ref's attention to make dirty plays, and he has very little respect for people that do. It seems like at least once a game, one of his teammates gets a check to the head of slew-foot. This league has lost all control over its players. It seems like, since there are never any suspensions, players feel like they can just do whatever they want out there on the ice.

Since he isn't a super physical player - he currently sits last on the team in hits - he has to make his presence known another way. Namely, he stays in tight on anyone he thinks is being a problem, not allowing them a moment to breathe. They think they're gonna get that pass? Nope. They think they can take the blue line uncontested? No way. He may not lay the body very often, but he's good at frustrating opponents with his defensive play and keeping them too occupied to play dirty.

Prompt 2:

Wizards whole philosophy is built around tricks and fooling defenses so that he is able to capitalize time after time again against opponents by utilizing what he likes to call the magic of misdirection. While this isn't exactly a magic it is something that Wizard has honed over time and is able to perfect in most instances. Wizard doesn't use his tricks to create nasty plays but instead to create breathtaking plays that have his opponents and the fans in awe. His goal is to make them really wonder if what is going on in front of them is actually magic or just a simple use of misdirection. Now while Wizard does not take the aggressive approach with his tricks some others do, his goal is to find a way to funnel these aggressive tricks into penalties. Whether its by starting a scuffle or something else of the nature, Wizards goal is to always gain the upper hand but he will not result to the tactics of trying to get in a late hit or something of similar nature.

Jacppo Nummilavin has never been one to play a lot of pranks but, he does get a good chuckle out of them and every so often he finds himself getting into some trouble. Unfortunately he is not very good at the pranks and he finds himself always doing too little to really make the prank funny. That does not stop him from thoroughly enjoying the prank though. His teammates normally do not even react to his pranks because most of the time they do not even realize that they have been pranked by Jacppo. Some of the pranks that he has pulled in the past have been things like sticking gum to the bottom of a teammates shoes or rearranging something small in their locker. Very small things that make it super difficult for anyone to know if this was an actual prank or just things that tend to happen in your day to day life.

Quote:Written Option 2: How does your player feel about using tricks to gain an advantage in play? If they enjoy tricks, what sort of nasty things do they do to get their advantages for their team? Embellishment? Dirty hits while the refs aren’t looking? If they aren’t keen on those sorts of tricks what could the league do to minimize these tricks from happening in games? How does your player prevent other players from doing these tricks against them?

I don’t necessarily consider Jae-ik Barron to be a dirty player. I think there’s a certain honor in playing hockey the way it’s meant to be played, but I also think that taking the high road when your opponents take the low road is loser behavior and if that’s how you approach a competition then you’re doomed to lose.

Embellishment is a no-go because only cowards do that, especially when an infraction is simulated whole cloth. Dirty hits can be OK if it’s like an extra large hit or catching an opposing player unaware on the ice, but I’m very against it when it comes to injuring players. Hockey should be tough and painful but it shouldn’t necessarily be dangerous.

However, I’m definitely against having the other team do these kind of things to my own player and my player’s teammates. Jae-ik is very quick to answer back when his opponents take liberties with his teammates, and I believe that in order for a hockey team to succeed, they need to think and feel as if they are one unit; a player must have the back of his team and vice versa.

Written Option 2:

I am definitely not above using tricks to gain an advantage over opponent, chirping, hits after the whistle all those kind of things are right in my wheelhouse. The only thing I won't do is something that could cause and injury like a hit to the head, throwing blindside punch, slew footing and things of that nature. Because I like using the tricks of the game to rile the opposition up, I also know what to look out for when someone tries to do that to me or my teammates. I've found that the best way to do this is by finding the player you know will be trying something and always being around them on a whistle and keep them preoccupied. Of course you won't always be able to do that and that's when you try to negate it by employing your own tricks. It's a very cat and mouse type game when it comes to this.

Sometimes to get an advantage over the opposing team you have to dive. It's not fun, and it kind of hurts your pride as you think about flopping on the ice, but sometimes you gotta take a page out of soccer players' playbook. If you can dive at a good time, and a referee finds you tripped on the ice in the corner of his eyes, then I say go for it. Fifty-fifty he would call it for an easy powerplay for your team. Referees barely call embelishment penalties anyway so might as well use the rulebook to your advantage. A team with great powerplay units should definitely use this as often as they can, while not doing it too much or you risk a penalty yourself. Find the middle ground and dive to your heart's content, accumulating the powerplays and chances for goals for your team. Your head coach will thank you for the sacrifice when you start reaping the rewards and win games by a big margin.

Written Option 1: Does your player play pranks on their teammates? If so, what kinds of pranks do they pull on them? How do your teammates react to these pranks? If your player isn’t the type to pull pranks themselves, are they the target of any pranks? Do they fall for them if they can be avoided? Feel free to describe how your player pranks their teammate or their reaction to getting pranked themselves!

Tibuk has got into the habit of not pranking people within his close personal circle. This personal rule involved from his minor hockey days when pranking got so out of hand that it was finally deemed a case of domestic terrorism. It started in the Swiss Alps where Tibuk would spend summers training. The fellow boys on the team would regularly haze the new comers. This was generally frowned upon but allowed to continue. It soon started to escalate from hazing to minor vandalism, to substantial vandalism until it finally turned into trying to carve names into critical infrastructure. This resulted in several boys being picked up by local police and questioned about their intentions. In all honesty it probably wouldn't have been more than a slap in the face except they refused to talk as part of the hazing rituals. Thus they ended up being charged with attempted destruction of critical infrastructure and are now serving 5-10 years for their participation. Lesson learned for Tibuk.

Jiggle E Puff loves using tricks on his opponents, it is one of his signature moves! The opponents of the atlanta inferno know that Jiggle will sing them to sleep if they do not put cotton into their ears before the game. Being a pokemon hockey player certainly has its perks. Other players on the Inferno also play tricks on the opponent. For instance, micool keeps a grilled cheese sandwhich in his pocket and will use the melted cheese to stick other players skates to the ice so that they are slowed down on fast breaks. MrPresident eats a whole bagel in one sitting while on the ice, thus intimidating the opposition into getting out of his way, as no sane man can eat a bagel in one sitting. And Cam hijacks the opposition team bus and crashes it into a local body of water, preventing them from ever getting to the game in the first place.

The Colorado Raptors are not a team that believes in pranks. Almost everyone is a stick in the mud but Kral King is the biggest stick in the mud anyone has ever met in their life. Not only has he given up on training hard, truly letting the team down and being a great representation as a "nominee" for last year's rookie of the year, but he is also a bitter man. Because of the team loves to take turns stealing his jock strap any chance they get. Is it funny? yes. Is it appropriate? who cares! If King is walking around just know he is likely looking for his jock strap because the dinos like to take it and hide it. The biggest jock strap stealing dino bandit is Baron Samedi as he likes to steal and hide it a weird amount. Maybe that explains his great season so far as he is harnessing the power of King's jock strap. What a silly team we have in Colorado.
