S81 mPT #4: Too Dead didn’t Line Due: Sunday, March 16th @ 11:59 PM PST

I dont mind the calmer trade deadline here so we don't have players bouncing around so much that they become disinterested. leave it as is, it has been fun!!

Problem with this is probably twofold. Firstly, it's a sim league, so not like people are going to be going crazy doing nutso moves if it means they would have to stop playing with their friends. Also, from what I seem to have gleaned in my minor experience discussing FHM tactics, you could very easily get hosed by like chem stuff with a new trade. Maybe there's a way for us to adjust those sliders to make player movement an easier thing to overcome.

Force teams to move one player per trade deadline. Better yet, have the rosters vote a player off the team survivor style. I think this could seriously benefit the league.

It's okay to see not a lot of trades in the SHL and the SMJHL. We are not professional athletes motivated by money and contracts. We are people enjoying a hobby, and our locker room is part of the community we have here.

Thanks @xjoverax for the sig!

Quote:NHL trade deadline can get crazy, SHL usually not so much. Do you think something should be done to encourage more movement of players during the season? Any ideas what could be done about it? Or do you think that things are fine as it is?

No, I don’t think more should be done to encourage movement. I think it’s reasonable to try and pin the SHL to the NHL in terms of feel and statistics, but there are certain aspects that are so fundamentally different that you can’t really make them like real life. I think trading is tied with salaries, which is tied with the nature of GMs and players having close relationships.

Every player is incentivized to take as little as possible in salary. A team’s success is largely influenced by the team culture and participation of its players. Moving a key part of your community for a temporary gain just doesn’t work the same way as it does in the NHL.

Maybe some sort of player roulette where marbles determines which player gets which position. Make it so that the GM has no control over things and let the chips fall where they may!

I think one of the big things that are holding back teams from looking to make trades at the trade deadline is that there is this fear that your team will get worse due to chemistry being a factor. No matter how big or small of an impact it may have, teams are still wary of it. if chemistry were reset on the regular I think teams may be more perceptive to trading for players.

I think there’s not really anything that can be done it honestly just comes down to what the gms want for there teams and I dont think we should force more trades if the gms don’t think it’s necessary for their team.

I would love to see more trades in the SHL. I think to really encourage it you would need players to want to leave teams more, and a mechanism like a lower salary cap to really encourage movement.

I always say I'd like to see a little more drama and intrigue with player movement in sim leagues, but given we're not professionals and leagues like this rely heavily on community to keep people engaged and not everyone wants to be thrown about from team to team for picks, I think it's just fine that we don't see a ton of movement. Maybe if we got paid millions of IRL dollars...

i think things are fine as is. you definitely see movement from time to time when teams are really in to win now mode, but it makes sense that it's more uncommon here than in real life because there's nothing tangible on the line. like a great player in the shl is usually happy to play on a "bad" team with their friends because there's no real life financial incentive to want to play in a bigger market or move to a bigger city or whatever. you have tons and tons of shots at a cup with a virtual player that can't get injured and if that player doesn't work out you can make a new one and get another dozen shots at it. im not sure we can more closely mimic real life trade deadline excitement without introducing like, real money or stakes into the league which would be awful.

I don't know if there's too much that can be done to encourage trading. At any point there's only a couple of teams seriously pushing for the cup, so selling out for a cup run isn't really rewarded

Trades can be exciting, but I don't think more trading should be encouraged. I think trades only make sense when it improves each team making said trade, whether it be immediately or moving forward. There's no reason to encourage more movement just for the sake of more movement.

I sure find the IRL deadline more fun than the SHL one. I do wish rentals was a bigger thing, but the value of draft picks are very high. The entire free agency is kinda bonked anyway. Paying silly money to inactive players.
