His father was a somewhat infamous con-man / card sharp and his mother was a lounge singer working in Manhattan. Otis grew up on the culturally diverse streets of Flushing. In fact, he grew up and up and up. Driftwood was 6 feet tall by the end of sixth grade, eventually topping out at 6’8” and 325 pounds. His huge size and obvious athleticism attracted the attention of every coach in his school rather quickly. Driftwood was a four sport star in high school, playing left guard in football, power hitting first baseman in baseball, defenseman in hockey and most dominant as a center on the hardwood. Driftwood played both football and hockey for the University of Michigan and was eventually drafted in both the NFL and the SHL. He chose hockey over football based primarily on his mother’s concerns for his health and well being 2.
