Special Teams Propel Knights

The Kelowna Knights came up big on special teams.  While the team did not do their best at even strength, they took advantage of the opportunities afforded to them by the Vancouver Whalers, who struggled to stay out of the box.  The Knights scored two powerplay goals on five opportunities and the penalty kill was perfect on the two times they were sent off.  LW Gylfi Eriksson had a great night with a powerplay goal and an assist on D Luciano Vessot's game tying goal.  On the other side of the ice, G Luca Del Vecchio stopped 8 shots while on the penalty kill and looked steady all night.  The penalty kill has been a sore spot for the Knights all season long as they are the only team that is below a 70% kill rate, so it was good to get it going tonight.

Whalers Win Faceoffs, Nearly Win Game

Faceoffs were nearly the undoing of the night for the Knights.  As a team, the Whalers won 45 of the 78 faceoffs in the game.  The Whalers second goal was scored just moments after C Austin Powers won the draw in the Knights zone.  After the Knights iced the puck, Powers won a faceoff against C Ryan Shepard back to Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr.  Just seconds later, Dario Medici had his 4th goal of the season and the Whalers had a 2-1 lead.  Shepard personally had one of his worst games of the season as he was held pointless on just one shot.  He was also on the ice for both Whalers goals and struggled mightily at the dot going just 11 for 33.  Whalers C Stracimir Petrovic was matched up against him most of the night and won 23/33 faceoffs and winning 13/19 directly against Shepard.
