Task #2 - 2 TPE
An expansion team in Nevada faces challenges, including fielding a solid crowd at home games. The inaugural season was a difficult one but the folks of Las Vegas came out in droves to support their new hockey squad and the Battleborn are very excited to show their appreciation with 'Horn Hats'. Baseball caps with foam ram horns on the sides branded with the team logo and 'thank you' printed on the back adjustable strap, which will be given to each ticket purchaser for the opening home game of season 56 in Nevada. A reusable rallying cry that will undoubtedly recur during the season, most likely near the end of the season as a playoff primer. Word Count: 115 Task #4 - 3 TPE I'm a part of two charities off the ice, one in Calgary that was started by my grandfather from his time back in the day with the Dragons and we've just turned it into a family affair. It offers help to different parts of Alberta in the form of clothes, food and other supplies to help the less fortunate. We fund raise money and goods and then my family uses their trucking business to deliver the donated items to different parts of Alberta. We're looking to expand out to Saskatchewan and BC but for now we're just focused on helping out Alberta. Since getting to Nevada I have started a charity to help addicts. Vegas has it's share of addicts who battle with gambling, drinking and drug use and seeing these people around us has pushed me to try and help them get the resources and help they need to get clean. It's still in the early stages but we've seen some payback in the form of AA/NA meetings contacting the organization with comments that the added help has helped them get more people clean and a lot more returning for six month coins. I'm really happy to see the efforts paying off and it's nice to make a change in my new home. Word Count: 215 Task #5 - 3 TPE C - Mats Marner - Post-season play means top lines get focused on more defensively, but Marner has a lot of offensive upside as he led the league in the regular season and in a dream team situation it's impossible to look him over as the top option at center. LW - Kyle Sutton - On an absolute tear in the post season, Sutton is leading the league in goals, points and shots on goal. An absolute offensive dynamo who would do well being paired with Marner and Kostitsyn. He does well to back check in his own end and has 31 blocked shots in the post season which helps generate breakouts. RW - (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn - Kostitsyn is a phenomenal two way player and has been one of the leaders for the Berserkers this season giving them some second line scoring. While he doesn't have as many blocked shots as Sutton, he has a very responsible nine takeaways to three giveaways. LD - Will Windsor - Windsor is the best all around defenseman in the league being a leader in Maine in points, plus/minus, ice time, defensive grade and blocked shots. Seventy six blocked shots in twenty two games is an insane amount and Windsor is a beast in both ends of the ice. RD - Adrik Baranov - Baranov has been another big defensive force for the Timber with a +14 rating to go with twelve points and right around nineteen and a half minutes a game played. Not necessarily the best defensive player with only three blocked shots and nineteen hits, his offensive prowess makes up for that. G - Leo Bloomfield - Bloomfield has played in seven more games then Newfoundland's Cale Armundsen and has pretty well equal numbers over those extra games which leans to him being the more consistent goalie. Facing over four hundred more shots and posting a slightly higher goals against average but a better save average makes Bloomfield the better choice overall. Word Count: 321 Task #7 - 2 TPE I think the new format has some ups and downs, but this is also my first season back in a long time so my opinions aren't that informed. I think it's nice to have every team participate in the SMJHL as the junior level at it's core is less about competition and more about growth of our players. I think that's changed a bit since my time originally in the league as more send-downs are playing for longer, but it's important to have new members not sit around for 2-4 weeks with nothing to do and I think all teams playing for longer achieves that and gives all members more to write medias about and more reason to check into the site. Obviously the seeding issues aren't ideal but it's the first iteration and I'm sure things will be worked on to smooth out the process. Word Count: 146 Task #8 - 3 TPE I feel I performed well and I was unsure of what to expect being drafted by an expansion team with a very shallow roster. I put up 19 points and was third in the league in blocked shots so I can't complain at all. For me it was important to prove to myself and the league that I had the drive to claim all the possible TPE I could get and make sure I was staying committed to training and doing PTs and on that front I absolutely nailed it. I did every single opportunity I could and have been very active in my locker room and done some medias so I can end the season knowing I did my best. For next season I just need to keep rounding out my build, which I already planned out and are happy with with the 350 cap for my second season. I'll be able to do that at the start of the season so I'll be ready to go for next season with my planned build and I think that will pay bigger dividends for me in S56. Word Count: 187 Task #10 - 3 TPE Nevada has a ton to look forward to next season and we're all very excited to get it underway. From the top to bottom we have a ton of super active players and we'll be at the 350 cap soon, along with a couple of the senior players coming back to activity or pushing harder. We have two active goalies and a stud starter in Weaver, we have six active defensemen who will all be pushing for the 350 cap very early in the season and some potent offensive weapons up front like including some exciting guys like Chad Danger. On top of that we have the second overall pick in the draft where we'll be for sure looking for another forward to fill out the team and we can start pushing out some more inactives. We as a squad are all fully invested in the team and improving and I think we can legitimately be a threat to make it deep in the playoffs for next year. Last but not least we get to see Weaver's Battleborn Reports return once we get back to play which is always exciting. Word Count: 190 |
