S61 SMJHL Championship Week
#26
(This post was last modified: 10-12-2021, 09:13 PM by Whitecap.)

Code:
Task #6 - 3 TPE
Make a dream team of players from the two teams in the four star cup finals (3F, 2D, 1G), and give a small explanation for each pick. Alternatively, make a graphic displaying your dream team.
Requirements:
WRITTEN: 150+ words

LW - Lev Lebedev - This is a player who finished 3rd in the regular season in goals with 34, and 3rd in playoff points. An offensive star like this must be included in any dream team.
C - Robert Black - An easy pick at centre is Robert Black. At 81 points this year he was second only to Québec’s Greyson Cooper. With 56 assists, he would be perfect in setting up Lebedev on the wing.
RW - Robot Sunfish - We’ll go with another goal scorer, giving Black another option to pass to. Good amount of goals, points, and also great defensive stats this season, Sunfish provides a well rounded presence on the right side.
LD - Mikko Rashford - On left defense, Rashford provides some more offense to the lineup. After a solid rookie season, Rashford went on to lead all defensemen in points in these playoffs with 15 in only 14 games.
RD - Pasta the Turtle - Because we have enough offense in the rest of the lineup, I’m opting for more of a defensive defenseman on the right side. Lots of blocks and hits from this player will keep the team well rounded.
G - Olof Karsikko - Probably the best of the four goaltenders in the finals, Karsikko provides some stability in goal.

Task #8 - 3 TPE
You just played out your very first season in the SMJHL to start a new chapter in your career. Overall, how would you say you performed in your rookie season? Did you meet expectations you set for yourself individually? What do you need to improve on for next season?
Requirements: 150+ words.
I would say I’m generally pretty satisfied with how my first season went. My goal was to work on my playmaking and defensive skills, and while I’d like to be a more consistent threat offensively, I was pretty good in my own end, at least. I finished third on my team in blocked shots with 108 despite limited ice time. I did not give the puck away a lot, and my plus/minus rating was not terrible for a team that finished third last. Offensively I think I was hoping for a bit more, but the team as a whole did not score a lot either. I think as long as I get all the TPE I can get, I can continue to build on my performance this season by working on some of my offensive skills. Some of Regina’s top players are also aging out this season, meaning I have the chance to fight for more ice time and hopefully get the chance to make a bigger impact for the team going forward.

Task #10 - 3 TPE
So your team just got eliminated these playoffs, and have to look forward to next season where hopefully things go differently. What does your team have to be excited about for next season, where they'll have another go at the coveted 4-star cup?
Requirements: 150+ words.

Being one of the two new expansion teams heading into the season, I don’t think the Regina Elk had very high expectations. That being said, finishing where we did was not all bad, even if the record does not look great. Sadly, some of our top players will be moving on to their big clubs next season, leaving some big gaps to fill on our top lines. Next season will probably be a tough one for the team, but there is still plenty to look forward to. The young players on this team seem very committed, and having been very diligent in earning their TPE. Add to that a 3rd overall draft pick in the upcoming draft, and some chances to find some talent in the later rounds, I think the Elk’s future will be very bright. Also, the team will also be under new management this time around. The past management team did a great job at setting us up for the future, and the new GM should provide a fresh outlook for the coming season.

Task #13 - 1-4 TPE
Answer up to 4 of these prompts, each one being worth 1 TPE for 50+ words each.
A. Which player from either team has the best name in this series (just the name itself, nothing to do with the player themselves).
B. The Newfoundland Berserkers have lost the opening two games of this series. How can they turn it around?
C. You're in another timeline where Quebec and Colorado are the two cup finalists. What went right for them in this timeline's playoffs compared to ours where they lost in the semi finals?
D. We've been talking about the playoffs, but it's performance throughout the season that helped get our finalists into the playoffs. Who was the key player to success for either team (or both) during the regular season and why?
A. For me the best name in the finals this year was definitely Evil Allbran. Especially because I believe that all All-Bran is evil to begin with, so imagining an evil version of that is really funny to me. I even included this player in my food themed all star team from one of the previous progression tasks. (57 words)
B. Well, as I’m writing this after the finals have finished, there is of course nothing they can do to turn it around. But realistically I’m not sure there was much they could have done either, as Vancouver just seemed like too dominant of a team this year. I would have probably wanted a bit more production from some of Newfoundland’s top forwards, as they did not score as many goals as I think they would have been expected to. Especially since the team was led by a rookie defenseman in point scoring these playoffs. (94 words)
C. For Québec, it’s tough because it seems like a lot of their players actually did quite well these playoffs. In an alternate timeline, maybe Greyson Cooper scores at the same pace as he did in the regular season, as this would have gotten him 12 goals as opposed to 6. Their goaltender Nor Dekes also had a slight drop in form in the playoffs, so that could also have affected their chances of progressing to the finals.
Colorado, in an alternate timeline, was playing a worse team than Vancouver. I mean Vancouver was just way too dominant of a team, and I think Colorado could have beaten anyone else in these playoffs. Their goaltender played quite well, so I would say that maybe their offense could have turned it on a bit more in the playoffs for them to make it to the finals. (144 words)
D. I usually like giving more credit to defensive performances than most people, but for both of these teams it was a forward who was key to their success in the regular season. For Vancouver, Lev Lebedev filled the opposition’s nets on a consistent basis, resulting with a spectacular 34 goals in 66 games. Meanwhile in Newfoundland, Robert Black led the league with 56 assists, proving to be an integral part of the Berserkers’ success this season. (76 words)
