Baku doesn't do great with teleprompters, especially those using a more "standard" English. Growing up in Nigeria, his phrasing is full of pidgin phrases. North American people usually roll their eyes or stare confusedly when Baku drops these into his daily language, but during a segment on a local Regina broadcast with regular face of the province Angie Masters, things got awkward.
Baku didn't stick to the script, and used the Nigerian pidgin "Abi" which means "right?" Masters, not knowing this, assumed Baku was being a dick and calling her by the wrong name. As many women in sports, Ms. Masters has faced a great deal of blatant or subtle sexism, and on this day she was especially short tempered with the Elk star forward. He laughed it off on camera, but then attempted to explain and apologize with Masters off air. Ms. Masters was mortified for her reaction, but accepted the apology. |
