Hockey Prompt
Fighting has diminished in hockey as a hole due to a variety of changes to the rules that have lowered more aggressive and physical play such as obstruction penalties (hooking, holding, etc.) which have allowed smaller and lighter players to excel (Patrick Kane for example, who is only 5'10".) I do not have a problem with fighting in hockey as it is much less dangerous than moment to moment play. Players fighting is much different to combat sports such as boxing or MMA as players who fight are both on skates and usually being grabbed by the other player they are fighting. These two factors make the punches much less effective as the skates hamper the ability to plant your feet and use your entire body (hip rotation eg) in the punch. I think a bigger problem with fighting is that it delays the game a significant amount, especially if teams get in full on scrums. If this were to become egregious the referees could get more liberal in their use of handing out penalties, otherwise I am ambivalent. ![]() ![]() Credit Maxy and Merica for sigs |
