When you're a hockey player in Newfoundland, no one recognizes you because everyone plays the 'beautiful game'. That is unless of course you're a member of the hometown team. As the son of a retired SHL player, my player learned first hand how some players are toward their fans. His father always took the time out for any fan who sought him out, signed autographs, took selfies. He wasn't the most popular or recognized player on Buffalo or Winnipeg or Edmonton but he always made the effort. That effort and watching his father do that led Vandy Jr to do the same, always take time out for the fans. Take a selfie, sign a puck, chit chat for a few minutes. As a player you are an ambassador of your team on and off the ice and its important that even if the casual fan doesn't remember the game, that their experience and interaction with you lasts a lifetime.
