For changing the rules of hockey, the one thing that I want to get rid of is the shootout. We should be keeping that for penalty shots only, and having four on four overtime to decide the fate of hockey games rather than a small skills competition at the end of a game which still doesn't make much sense to me. Teams shouldn't be rewarded for just surviving - they should be rewarded with 2 points from winning the game, not a skills competition at the end of a game. Will the rule ever change? Probably not but it's a nice thing to dream about. I think playing four on four overtime would probably take too much time and that's why the NHL and SHL opted for the shootout, because more often than not it ends the game quicker than overtime would. But for the sake of enjoyment, I think that hockey should go back to the overtime format, as it is much more entertaining to me than the shootout.
