In the NHL, I would wish they would change their points system to the IIHF 3-2-1-0 system.  In the IIHF, 3 points are awarded for a regulation win, 2 points for an overtime win, 1 point for an overtime loss, and 0 for a regulation loss.  This would reduce the randomness of how many points are awarded in each game, as instead of a chance for a random number of games to award 3 points and not 2, all games would award three points.  This would also alter how teams and players tackle end of game situations, most importantly in tie games late in the 3rd.  Instead of playing safe to guarantee 1 point, both teams are more likely to push for that extra point.  This also eliminates a ton of the issues with current standings where a team with double digit ot losses gets in, and punishes teams that get into overtime regularly.
