Written Option 2:

There's always a little extra spring in your step when you walk into the arena for the first home game of the season. Tonight, you know the arena is going to be full. Tonight, your family and friends will all be there. Tonight is your only chance to make a good first impression for the season.

Barcus tries to tell himself that this game isn't any different than the 65 or so other games he'll play this season. But deep down inside he knows that this game is special. Despite being only 19 years old, he's now a J veteran, and he will be asked to lead, not just contribute. There's even a slim chance that this will be his final SMJHL opening night.

So when he steps on that ice, Barcus takes an extra moment to soak it all in.  When announced in the pre-game ceremony, he makes firm eye contact with as many of his friends, family, and other fans that he possibly can, and tries somehow to send waves of gratitude back to the stands.
