S81 mPT #4: Too Dead didn’t Line Due: Sunday, March 16th @ 11:59 PM PST

I think the SHL has a healthy amount of trades and doesn’t need any more push to encourage it at the deadline. We always falls back on, “These are your friends and trading them can hurt.” Which I think can get lost a bit in the NHL when there are millions of dollars on the line.

Honestly, I believe it is kind of fine the way it is. Especially since you can't really force people to leave teams, and if you cut the cap, then you could potentially drive people to inactivity.

I do not think that there is anything to be done to improve the trade deadline. The sim is based on numbers so you are not really going to be able to get a steal or anything like that. From what it seems to me, player trades tend to go poorly with how the chemistry system works. Unless a team is dead in the water and needs picks there is no need to trade.

i think lack of movement in the shl has more to do with a cultural aspect, a tendency to hold on to picks or players more than anything

I legitimately have no clue. The same reluctance to trade exists in the ISFL, and really the only solution is to just live with it, because a sim league operates on entirely different incentive mechanisms and people like staying on teams with their friends.

DEATH BEFORE DETRANSITION.

I do my best work in the ISFL, go find me there.

NHL trade deadline can get crazy, SHL usually not so much. Do you think something should be done to encourage more movement of players during the season? Any ideas what could be done about it? Or do you think that things are fine as it is?

FA being less desirable in sim leagues makes too much sense to have to force change to it. People tend to find a team they very much enjoy and want to stay there. You could force a lower cap to force some FA, but is that more desirable then having people just being on a team they enjoy.

I can't honestly say I've paid a lot of attention to the trade deadline during my brief time in the league, so I'm not exactly sure how active/inactive the trade deadline is. I'm not even sure where to look to see where trades are posted or when the trade deadline even is for that matter.
It does mostly seem that there is a cycle of perennial elite teams and bottom feeders, wherein the lower teams seemingly tank as much as possible to draft as high as they can for a stretch of a few seasons and then essentially wait and see if those picks/players pan out. Those teams aren't in a rush to be making moves at the deadline, while others like San Francisco are so good they don't need to make moves either.
Does anyone in the mushy middle want to make trades while they're seemingly fighting an uphill battle or simply be patient while they build their core and chemistry?

In short, I have no idea.

I think the lack of movement at the trade deadline in SHL could actually be considered a good thing. It means that players are happy where they are and there is mutual loyalty between players and GM's.

I definitely think something needs to be done because trades in the SHL barely seem to happen. The issue is there are so many layers to the lack of trades it’s almost impossible to fix. I think one of the main reasons though has to do with how the SHL contract/money system works. Right now most established players have no need for money so they sign for the minimum they can and that allows teams to keep a ton of players and have no movement.

I also think there are people who just tend to stay with the groups they know and they never really move from that team once they’re there. It’s not an easy issue to fix but it could be worth visiting.

SHL is less a business and more about user enjoyment. If players don't want to get traded and teams are happy with their rosters heading into the playoffs then I don't think anything needs to be done about that...

I think it would be fun to have blockbuster trade deadlines and FA moves, but not sure if it's really possible to make happen. I think the only way would be to force movement with some sort of cap restrictions, but the cap situation in the league seems fine so why mess with it.

No. I think it’s fine. Most trades happen during the offseason here. It all depends on how many teams are selling. Also there’s more to be said when we are all friends in a game not running a business.

Eh, the whole trading thing is a bit deader when you consider people have far less of a financial stake in things. Competition is good, but you will rarely find someone who is too keen on the competitive side to the point of just sending people off.

When there aren't many teams not making the playoffs, the lower seeded playoff teams have less of a reason to sell, therefore creating a vaccuum where many teams buying either have to massively overpay of stand pat.  It's a bit weird but it's ok the way it is.

People generally want to play with their friends and I don't really have a problem with that as long as they aren't screwing over any other teams. Trades are cool but in a hobby league I can see why it's not that popular.
