S58 PT #1 Empty Arenas

Copious amounts of illicit substances. We roll the lines on who gets to pick the pre game music. I'd rather go with the hot-hand, but fair is fair. We're used to crazy crowds in Toronto, so this has been a bit of a shock, and takes some getting used to. Anyway, back to the music. The songs are the best way to get pumped when you don't have that roar of the crowd coming through the walls. It doesn't quite match that feeling, but getting deafened by some bangers before the game isn't too shabby. Playing without a crowd can have it's advantages. Plays that might turn into negative momentum shifts don't have the same effect. (That means if I botch a breakout pass, I can ignore it). So it's pretty easy to get me pumped up knowing that I won't be punished verbally for my horrendous mistakes with the puck.

The Sullivan Center in Anchorage is currently being used as a mass vaccination center for Covid-19. For the time being all Armada games are actually played at their practice rink.

After 69 shots on net with still no SHL goals to show for it, even the opposition started to feel so sorry for Lemo, that they decided to help him out :D
- Bad pass by Jack Klompus, he gave it right to Lemo Pihl.
- Lemo Pihl rips it to the net...
- Lemo Pihl will find the empty net, that should do it!
TEX @ MAN, S59 game 31

Otis B. Driftwood is an old ass man. He’s been playing in the SHL for a long time now. His entire career has been as a Calgary Dragon playing under Esa Anrikkanen ‘s management. He was captain for many seasons and responsible for getting his teammates pumped up and performing at their peak. He took this task very seriously when it was his purview.

Otis is no longer captain. Younger, more energetic players are responsible at this point for getting the team ready to play. In these waning days of his career Otis takes things a little easier.

Otis’ game day ritual is a more personal and more mellow experience these days. He likes to spend some time up on the roof of the Big Parm feeding the chickens and hanging out with whatever old timer past teammates are up there that day. He’ll then head down to a private player lounge area where he’ll light up an El Cheapo cigar, sip on a martini and get a rubdown from a young Swedish girl named Inga. This is usually followed by a short nap.

Upon waking roughly forty five minutes before the puck is dropped, he’ll go strap on his gear and get the uniform on. Heading to the ice, he’ll take a brief warmup skate and then it’s time to rock and roll.

Thankfully even though there are no fans at the game, things still feel relatively the same as the rink crew does a good job to keep the music and the effects going for the people watching at home. It really helps the guys on the ice too but there is no doubt that without the hometown fans there to cheer you on, things are certainly different. Thankfully in the locker room the feeling is still relatively the same as well with music going before the games to pump us up and maybe some post-game beers if we were able to win. As we are effectively in our own bubble we have to do whatever we can to make life seem 'normal' but also do our part to help those keeping safe at home. Hopefully this will all be behind us soon and we can get the crowd back just in time to see the rise of the Monarchs!

With all of the restrictions in place in New England, the Wolfpack will have to find creative ways in order to give he home arena, more of a home advantage. So instead of leaning on the energy of the crowd, we would be using each other to get hyped. It's pretty easy to do as the team is pretty energetic, especially with guys like "Clean" and Price. These two can get anyone to buy into the hype. If that doesn't work Frans Eller would probably hit you a couple of times with his stick to get your head into the game. Last thing he needs is someone not 100% invested in the game. But in general a lot of yelling and screaming at yeah other to get hyped works quite well, as everyone has their own pregame rituals, but the one constant is the loud noise of the crowd before the team steps on the ice.

the stampede have a wild pre game routine. It's hard, especially when at home to feel the amp of the crowd to pump you up during your home games. At least its very similar around the league and everyone is in this together. To hype everybody up buffalo stampede has a dance battle with all the raging tunes anybody can come up with. It's good for a little bit of cardio warm up and to get everybody hyped up as we shit talk the lame moves and hype each other up, all for the fun and games of things. Its easy to get lost in the hype and sometimes we extend this for a bit too long. Luffy is always the champion. Captain on the ice and in the locker room. While this is far from the roar of a packed crowd that sways with the flow of the game, it's something simple to amp up the competitiveness and complete with yelling it can get pretty rowdy.

This year it's going to be...weird. This is a time like nothing we've seen before. We have a global pandemic raging on, and here we are playing hockey. None of us are alone during this hard time. Carolina has come together to make sure that rookies, sophomores, and everyone in between know that it's okay for this to feel weird. It is weird, it isn't normal having all these restrictions and having to worry about possibly getting a horrible virus. But, what Carolina has done to raise the spirits of everyone and to make sure everyone is pumped is that we play a fight song before every game. We play a fight song or a hype song, sometimes both. We do it to remember former teammates and appreciate the ones we have now. We love this team and we love having the people we do as teammates.

The Atlanta inferno don't have fans in attendance due to the pandemic, but they came up with an excellent plan to pump up the team before and during games, they will have their current prospects divided into different sections of the crowd with loudspeakers and other audio-creating devices, they will also be interacting with the audience at home by holding up signs, and starting chants that the fans can give a prompt for on Twitter or Instagram, and they will yell or write anything within basic limits. The prospects are also tasked with keeping up the mood mascot-like during intermissions, stoppages and so on by dancing to the great tune of "I like the Way you move" by the band Outkast. They will also be given full, free access to the foods and drinks at the arena so as the game goes on they will be getting extremely drunk and obnoxiously loud. Just like the actual crowds before Covid!

The Aurora dressing room like most teams has the Locker Room DJ and only the most hype epic tunes are allowed on the setlist. Every player in the room gets to put on one song that gets them going or causes the hair to stand up on their arms it’s so good. A classic on the set list is Eye of the Tiger. And no setlist could go wrong with the Final Countdown as well.Besides the usual we like to watch a riveting speech from the Miracle on Ice by Kurt Russel. It never fails to get the team going. Some players have started taking some pre workout to get those jitters going pre game when the crowd is roaring as the Aurora steps onto the ice. Personally Commander Shepard spends 3 minutes meditating before each game imagining playing in front of 24000 fans every night. During this time no one is allowed to disturb him.

With the world that we are living in now with all of the covid restrictions and having now fans in the stadium it has been very hard to adapt to this type of atmosphere. My teammates and I are doing a very different approach to pre game things; before covid we could go out and sign autographs and even sometimes talk to fans.. but now we can not do any of that because there are no fans in the stadium. So now me and my teammates do zoom meetings with a select few fans before every game to really get to experience how our fans are doing and how we are doing as a team. It is fun to speak with fans and still be able to interact them because it is very difficult not playing in front of a packed stadium every night... it really is a whole different experience!

The crowd is something so integral to the feel of a hockey game and the energy that a team plays with that it’s pretty much impossible to replace but in times like these, we need to try. Both for our fans watching at home and for ourselves. So how do you get pumped up for the games when you don’t have the fans chanting your name? By keeping everything as close to normal as possible and not focusing on it. Loud, blaring music pumping through the locker room to get everyone good to go. The Captain, shouting out a speech to us about giving it our all. Recordings of the fans cheering being pumped throughout the rink as we skate out onto the ice and while we play. We can never really replace the crowd, the dynamic nature of a crowd but we can do our best to mitigate the loss of them.

There are several things our team does to get pumped:
- we recite a fun little slogan that corporate made for us
- we yell our actual "get pumped" cheer
- we sing the entirety of We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions in one go
- we watch Miracle twice in a row
- we bring weights to lift when we're on the bench, then yell exclamations as we work out
- we stick tire pumps in our mouths to get even more pumped
- we have a contest to see how long we can yell in one shift before taking a breath
- we slap our sticks on the ice very quickly, re-enacting the final battle of Drumline
- we supply all our players with vuvuzelas (in team colors of course)
- we pretend there is a crowd and make gestures at them and get in arguments
- we break out some ice cream on a table on the ice; who doesn't get excited for ice cream?

Never forget

Markus steps out of his car, and swings his gear out of his trunk. He powers on his headphones, and pushes "Play" as Celtic folk music starts rushing towards his ears. He's in his own world, his own mind. He visualizes the ice before him as he steps through the gates, throwing an automatic hand gesture to the guard currently on-duty, and on his way to the locker room. He puts on his gear as the music starts getting louder, and heavier, with every step. That this part of the journey to the arena, towards the blaring of the crowd when a game is at stake as he's gathering his focus in his mind's palace, Markus has done a thousand times now. Maybe more.

The deafening silence of the game, where his focus is usually the most required, however, was not something he could foresee happening.

The scratching of blades on the fresh ice. The instructions being haphazardly given out by the refs. The shouting matches from both benches. It was surreal, like he was 10 years old again and playing in König's local arena. But it allowed him to be even more dialed into the game. With such a young defense in front of him, he needs all the focus and help he can get, so it's been a blessing in disguise. Markus will take those, after 6 years of searching for a playoff appearance. Maybe this is the season...?
