I think its fine overall because our Trade deadline is just pushed really to the draft and off season which adds to some excitement to any otherwise draggy part of the sim league overall. I dont think anything needs to change to push it to the front.

i think that allowing for movement of players would make the league spicier and im all for it. maybe think about incentivizing teams who move w/ some sort of draft capital and/or financial support?

I dont know if its a product of FHM sims or what, but in the SHL kind of feels like you know how the season will go after the first week, and theres usually a few favorites and a few tanks and while there have been some cinderella playoff runs, i dont know if theyve ever finished the job or if one of the original favorites still inevitably wins - and im also not convinced those cinderella runs have had anything to do with roster makeup changes or if its just luck of the sim. I think with more teams and competition for playoff places, and maybe with FHM10 we could see a bit of a revival.
Keep in mind, in real life these teams are also trying to get to the playoffs and go deep to maximise revenue, whereas nobody in the SHL cares. It could probably be addressed with new cap rules to reward performance but i have no idea how that could ever be fair, either. -----------------------------------------------------

Especially for competitive teams, the cap limit is so restrictive that trading in players during the season is as unreliable as it is expensive. Edmonton likes to use its remaining cap space to award high-value contracts to players who need it, and that’s at loggerheads with in-season trades.
Ultimately, it just isn’t viable with the existing structure as it stands, and while that’s sad, it’s also just inevitable. And hey, it keeps off-season interesting!

I do not think the trade deadline will be an active event in the SHL. It just does not work like the NHL. Players already play where they want, if they do not, they just go to FA and sign where they want. Sometimes trades happen with rebuilding teams sending their high tpe players to a better team to give that player a better window to win.

It feels like things are fine as they are now.
The GM's are making moves they deem necessary to improve their teams if they feel they have a crack at the playoffs or even the Stanley Cup. It also allows teams who are out of contention to either try to turn their luck around or get ready for the upcoming draft or free agency for next season. I get that the Deadline is an opportunity to make a show out of it, but this is a business first and foremost. ![]() Say his name and he appears!

I think we should force the top 3 players of every team play a game of music chairs, and whoever goes out first gets dumped into the lowest standing team.

The salary cap is so tight that it doesn't leave many options open for trying to upgrade, if you have a decent team you probably have no room to swap out a 900 TPE player for an 1800 one. Also, it is very risky in FHM to upset your chemistry with just a week to go in the season it has just as much likelihood to have a poor result than a good one.

How about adding movement or no movement clauses to contracts? It would also help if there were multi-year contracts with a visible salary cap number! That would help some movement at the deadline to get pieces to go all the way!

With the size of the league, the fact that only a handful of teams miss the playoffs, there are going to be less sellers. Also, with the community focus of the league, it is more likely that people spend somewhat long periods of time with one team for a player. Expansion will help with creating more "sellers" thus creating a market, but we'll never match the insanity of this past Trade Deadline.

The SHL isn't structured in a way that encourages player movement. The NHL's pro-rated cap makes cap space valuable to have, and increases flexibility at the end of the season, making trades possible that couldn't have fit under the cap at the start of the season. Add the fact that the SHL's adjusting salary tiers discourage long-term contracts and the type of moves we see in the NHL just aren't possible here

There should be more trading but the format of the league does not encourage it. To be successful you need to draft well and build with that same core to become a sustainable contender. Because of this you don’t see people trading away picks for short term gains very often.
