S60 SMJHL PT #3 - Rivalry Week
#31

I am too new to the SHL to really know which teams hate which other teams and where the beef lies. But speaking of beef, I will be cooking steaks tonight I think… But as someone who is coming from the Colorado Yeti in the ISFL, I think it is safe to say that my rivals are the other Yeti players. This maybe is not a rivalry in the traditional sense, as we are all on very good terms and I hope they all have very successful careers. I just want my career to be like 5 or 10 percent more successful than theirs. And if that is not a rivalry, I do not think I know what is. But there are also always division rivalries. Right now, the Pacific division has four teams with winning records. I would really like to finish ahead of Vancouver and be in the top half. The Whalers were kind enough to pick me up at the end of last season when I created at a bad time, and I would like to repay the favor…by beating them in the standings.

I've been told that the Maine Timber's biggest rival is the Newfoundland Berzerkers by the more senior guys on the team, but with this being the first year in the league, it's hard to say if this has been fully ingrained into the new players. Perhaps a bit of exterior force will have the team banding together to overcome and we can put on a good show, let the whole league know that we aren't the same pushover that they might have thought our team to be. If not, we know that we can have hope for the team's future endeavors, pushing ourselves more and more until we can finally have a cup raised over our heads. Until then though, we need to stay focused and make sure that Newfoundland comes out of the game feeling every minute of ice time against us. In the meantime, GO TREES!

As a new member of this league, I had to do some digging to see who would qualify as a rival for the Colorado Raptors. Surely this team is so great, so powerful, so domineering that none could possible hold a candle to our legacy? But there was one. A single dissenting voice in a hall of wallowing despair. A single thorn in the side of our jurassic menace - The Anaheim Outlaws. How could these pistol toting criminals possibly halt the advance of a rampaging terror? The Outlaws were single-handedly responsible for derailing Colorado's S54 and S57 playoff bids - both very promising years for the rocky mountain lizards. The team in Anaheim also lives up to their name with a history of shady backroom dealings and subterfuge to achieve their dubious goals. With a powerhouse physical presence such as Donald Trump Jr. now amongst the ranks of the Colorado Raptors, they are ready to deploy him to punish the pestiferous Outlaws on the icy field of combat. His checks, hits, and crosschecks will pummel the Outlaws into the ground. They will leave the arena bloody, beaten, and broken.

I haven't been on the team long enough to know who our actual short-term rival is, nor has Kelowna been particularly competitive as of late, but I can think of no bigger SMJHL rivalry than the Battle of BC.

Vancouver was founded in S1 and Kelowna was founded in S2, and while I wasn't there, I feel like the rivalry began early on due to it's geographical reasons. (Note: Prince George was also a founding member of the SMJHL, and was also considered part of the Battle of BC, however a championship drought of 30 seasons kept them on the sidelines and they were not considered particularly active in the rivalry. (subnote: I scored the game seven OT GWG that ended the 30 season drought))

At the very least, I can assure that by the time I joined the SHL and was signed by the Whalers in S18, the rivalry was alive and well. S19 saw what could very well be the most active year in the rivalry, seeing back-and-forth media on the attributed terrorist attacks of the teams and bickering in the play-by-plays, as S19 saw an experiment where every single game in the season was given a play-by-play. Even better, the two teams met in the playoffs, however it was not a difficult series for the Whalers, as they'd go on to win the cup for the second season in a row.

It made my SMJHL years so memorable, that I wrote an article to put in my SHL History Book, and is likely a contributing factor to why the SMJHL is my favorite league on the site.

After being in Nevada for awhile, I've started getting to know the ins and outs of my team.  And one of those things is rivalries. I actually have two rivals personally.  The first one is a personal rivalry against a good friend of mine, Steve Collins. He happens to play on the opposite wing that I do for St. Louis. As much as we want to outdo each other, we still have massive respect for each other.  But the other team rivalry has got to be the Anaheim Outlaws.  Not only are they the closest team to mine geographically, but it's also a city rivalry.  The two cities have always been close yet far apart for years. Both have entertainment value, Las Vegas for it's gambling and casinos, Los Angeles for it's theme parks and movie production. And as a Battleborn, I will do my part in making sure we send them packing.

Unfortunately most of the suggestions ideas for rivals don't seem to work for Nevada and I. Being a new franchise I don't think Nevada has had time to make a significant rivalry in the league yet, hopefully we can change that as our young core becomes stronger and stronger. Passing on me in the draft wise, that's another tough one when every team in the league passed on me multiple times. Hell, I even had beef with Nevada when I was freshly drafted for letting me drop that far. In the VHL where we have Vegas and Mexico City, the desert duel tag always stuck to me, but here theirs no other teams really in the desert with us, Anaheim maybe, but Colorado is closer geographically and Anaheim is too scary to beef with - they have a gun and we are but sheep. But really my answer is Anchorage because @Gwdjohnson didn't draft me after I didn't draft him (i tried to trade for you gabe HE WOULDN'T LET ME).

Being newly entering the league and making the trip over from Finland, Meeka has yet to make a serious rival but in order to get locked in to each and every game that he plays he looks for any sort of chip on his shoulder that he can use such as not being drafted by then, being lit up by them the previous game, or just to provide the best goaltending for the team that he can provide. I imagine deeper into the season when teams start to spread out & games become much more important down the stretch that some rivalries will start to take shape and deepen over the course of the next few seasons as Meeka becomes more solidified in the SMJHL and hopefully takes over the starting job. While no team has been a rival for Meeka, the other rookie goaltenders have started to become more tense in nature as they fight to post the best stats and prove who just is the best goalie in the current class and what SHL teams should take a shot on them.

Our team has two rivals in my eyes, Anaheim and QCC. Anaheim is more of a newfound (slightly personal) rivalry, and QCC is more deeply rooted as they were our expansion team partner, so our fates are somewhat tied to each other. Neither of these rivalries have any bad blood at all and are a blast to chirp the other players in. This does not change the fact that QCC and Anaheim are stinky. To go a bit more in depth in the Anaheim rivalry, Ace is the Anaheim GM, and Ace is stinky. Also we have a moose on our team and Anaheim has a penguin on their team. As everyone knows, the moose and the penguin are natural enemies in nature so it only makes sense that our teams would develop a rivalry over this. I hope to one day beat Anaheim so I can rub it in Ace's face, because, to reiterate, Ace is very stinky.

I am a new player to the Junior circuit and newly signed on with the Colorado Raptors. As any player knows, once you join a team you've signed a commitment to hating that teams rivals. I have been in the SHL for 3 days now and let me tell you, those boys over in Anaheim are some smelly skaters. First off what kind of Outlaws are in Anaheim? They trying to rob Disneyland? Going to mosey on up to Hollywood? Let's be honest no one would even know where Anaheim was if it wasn't for Disney. They made two different sports movies about teams in Anaheim and one of them decided to claim Los Angeles that way fans actually knew where the team they were watching was from. Maybe that was the Outlaws idea? They didn't want fans to find out what city puts this bad of a show on ice? Atleast the loyal fans of Colorado can proudly wear our name on their sweaters!

Well I have personal beef with Detroit because with my last player they were the one team that really competed with us for the Four Star Cup. You could also say that Vancouver is a personal rival of my mine because they have some people on their team that I've had personal... disagreements with.

When it comes to Kelowna as a whole, well we've been a pretty dang good team recently and it seems as though Quebec City has been mirroring our playoff windows. I'd have to go with them as our biggest rival. When we're bad they're bad so we're competing for picks and when we're good they're good so we're competing for cups. It also fits because Tomas Zadina played for Quebec City last season before being taken by Kelowna in the draft so there's definitely a chip on his shoulder every team we have to play them.

Draft night came and the hype was real. Sean Stevenson III was hopeful that he would be selected to Carolina at some point in the draft and they definitely had the picks to make it happen. Pick after pick came off the board and he noticed that a couple of their earlier picks were the position he played. Pick number 30 came up and Sean had hoped this was the pick as he would be gone by the time their next pick came around. After another name was called it was clear, Sean just wasn't in the Kraken's plans. So with this new information clear to him he made a vow, whenever he plays Carolina he is going to make it his mission to turn it up to another level. The rivalry between team and player was born and even though it is likely one sided the salt is real and it is time to release the Kraken from their misery.
