S48 Positional Battles:
The Hockey News draft guide takes a look at some of the leagues most exciting potential position battles for the upcoming season.

There is goalie battle coming up sooner than you can count in Chicago, as the franchise begins to prepare for life after it's first goalie, Jay Bae. Bae, a S46 rookie is now in his second year of regression and likely winding down his career. Chicago has two hot goalie prospects in Tibuk Soonika of the Anaheim Outlaws and Billy Sorokin of the St. Louis Scarecrows. Both goalies have proven to be winning players and have had success under pressure, with Soonika coming off of his first Four Star Cup win, following Sorokin's two Four Star Championship runs, one of which he was the starter for. Soonika has the edge in TPE with 559 over Sorokin's 423. Both netminders are tops of the J in save percentage thus far on the year, with Soonika's .918 placing him second, beat out Sorokin's .909 that his the Russian goalie in third. This will be an interesting situation to keep an eye on as the year progresses and the two goalies battle to take Chicago's mantle.

Out with the Old, in with the New?

The SHL positional battles at goaltender rage on, with veteran starters beginning to make way for up-and-coming netminders. However, managing the workload and figuring out a path through the season to get the most out of both options will be key for the chances of each of these teams.........

-In Los Angeles, veteran Evgeni Marmeladov is being pressed by up-and-comer Eddy Ask Jr. While LA is a playoff outsider at best, any chance of a playoff berth will depend on top-quality netminding. If Marmeladov stumbles out of the gate early, look for LA management to pull the trigger on a change, and put Ask in for more experience at an SHL level.

-In Toronto, veteran goaltender Michael McFadden is rapidly approaching retirement, with rumours swirling of Toronto wanting to call up SMJHL goaltender Harry Carpet. The Lethbridge Lions, however, desperately need the young netminder to keep a starting role on the team while their backup Nolan McMahon develops. If McFadden stumbles, Toronto may be forced to pull the trigger on a callup and bring Carpet into the fold to maintain their playoff aspirations.

-In Winnipeg, it seems veteran Cedric Moreau will still share time with Vivian Leblanc, although Leblanc may be getting more of the icetime as she'd eased into the starting role left vacant by the retirement of legend Artom Zhumbayev. However, Moreau may be called upon down the stretch if Leblanc falters. With the signing of Crossfit Jesus, the Jets have made it clear that they're willing to push to get back into the playoffs, and if that means giving Moreau an increased role, so be it........

The Faceoff Report:
The SHL Hockey guide takes a look at some of the best and worst face off specialists in the game as well as those go to guys, sleeper picks and late round bargains when it comes to the men working towards maintaining the puck.

While it may not be as pretty as a high goal, assist, or point tally, face-off percentage is a huge contributing factor to a player's performance on the ice. This can translate into better overall team play and certainly can be the difference in a win or loss. The SHL pre-season has finally come to a close and with that, the face-off picture is becoming clearer. The most dominant face-off takers are Robert Phelps of Hamilton, Mikhail Lokitonov of Toronto, and Dermot Lavelle of Buffalo. They boast a 58.10%, 57.47%, and 57.44% face-off win percentage respectively. Quite the face-off champions. Now let's take a look at who had the worst percentages in the league. Selich (BUF) 786 draw attempts 34.61%, Boomhover (NEW) 1262 attempts 42.79%, Nickolas Klaus (TB) 1117 attempts 43.78% Marc Hagan (EDM) 857 attempts 45.62% (min. 750 draws). These are definitely guys you don't want to draft for their face-off skills, although good players in their own respect.

Bold SHL predictions:
This article discusses some of our boldest predictions about the upcoming S48 season.

There are plenty of safe bets to be made for the coming season. Those are boring. What isn’t boring is the bold bets that can be made, and I am going to be making one, and here it is. The New England Wolfpack will be making the S48 playoffs. I know that the first question is “why is this a bold prediction?” Well, New England has 6 rookies on their roster going into S48 and I believe that these rookies will be a major reason why. Where most teams are only fielding one or two rookies, New England is loading up on them and they are not afraid of putting them in the spotlight. Five forwards and one defensemen make up this rookie contingent. I could do an entire article on the positional battles that will come up, line options, and who the stars are going to be. It isn’t a normal thing for an SHL team to field a team so young, and I for one, think it is one of the more exciting story lines of the coming season. Yes, we could talk about if we think the Platoon can repeat. But that is boring. The Wolfpack is young, and hungry. I think they will over perform and it will be the young guns who carry the workload.

Bold SHL predictions:

My bold prediction for the 48th season of the SHL is that the New England Wolfpack will make the playoffs. Coming off of multiple strong draft years, stars rising to the occasion and a team with decent offensive depth I believe this team might just be able to pull it off. While they did not make the playoffs according to the pre-season, they only had 1 less win then the Toronto North Stars (which was the team to clinch the last spot). New England also only scored 7 less goals then them, which proves the team has offensive depth. The big x factor for the New England will be if the defensive depth can pull its weight. While goal tending is not an issue, the team did give up the most goals in the league which is something that needs to change immediately if this team plans to take the last spot

The Chicago Syndicate will not only make the playoffs this year but they will compete for a championship. We have added some really good players and already have shown we have a thing for winning games. So my bold prediction would be that Chicago is going to compete for the Cup, meaning they will be the team that goes to the cup in the East. Westbroak will win rookie of the year and Atmey will end up being the leading scorer in the league. I think you will find that Chicago will be a much better team than everyone thinks. A part of this bold prediction is that next year when Corey Kennedy comes up, Chicago will win the championship and have back to back rookie of the year winners. I think Chicago finishes 2nd or 3rd in their division but still makes the playoffs. Then they go on a tear and surprise everyone in the playoffs. They however will lose in a game 6, but get closer than anyone else predicts them to be. Mark my words here, the Chicago Syndicate will win a cup before New Orleans and become a dynasty. You heard it here first, before anyone else, isn't this what bold predictions are all about?

What young players in the SHL should you draft and stash? here we target those players who will one day turn into draft day stars.

Easily hands down has to go to Delver Fudgeson. This young man and rookie leads the lions already in regular season action and can't be stopped. He no doubt will easily transition right into a starting role for basically any SHL team once his time is up and his number is called. This guy is the calm before the storm but also the disaster after it. He'll be crushin reps in the gym and sandos after to gain exactly what he needs to be a stud in the SHL for years to come. If you want a 1st OA pick that is gonna be the face of your franchise for years to come look no further than this beautiful mother fucker. Don't get me wrong this might be a risky pick because he is a wild boy, but how are you going to win championships without risky wild boi studs like Fudgeson?

Bold Prediction: Hamilton Steelhawks make the playoffs and win a round.

Looking at the stats from pre-season this sounds like quite the lofty goal for the Steelhawks after coming off a disappointing season last year and having not much success in the pre season. That being said, I expect they have a few players that will work extra hard to get something done this year. After all the team has some big names retiring at the end of this season and if they don't get something done this time they may be ending their careers with no cups. The players who've already pledged to retire after this season are Alexander Zajac, Nour Harrak, Andrew Martin, Ben Dover, and Vijanupatan Singh. Unless Hamilton decides to trade away all these players before they retire with the club I suspect they will go out there with something to prove and along side players like Tig Murphy and Robert Phelps, they may just stand a shot at a playoff spot and catching a team off-guard in round 1.

From the preseason performances, I foresee this polarizing take on the upcoming season:

The Calgary Dragons will miss out on the postseason.

They are in too tough of a conference where just getting 50 points is all it takes to make the playoffs. They got hot down the stretch in the preseason, though they had already buried themselves in a deep hole to where they were 8 points behind 5th place by the end. A narrow goal difference to boot, so they are not incapable of making it if they win those close games during the regular season. 7 losses in a row to open the preseason, all within one or two goals, and a six-game swoon in the middle of that preseason as well put them in an untenable position in the West, the tougher half of the SHL, especially if they start turning in middling performances when the curtain opens.

While they are always capable of reaching playoffs and always a threat to run deep once there, the piper has been long overdue, and I think he finally makes his way to Calgary to collect for Challenge Cups and Western Conferences past.

Tough Guys and Enforcers:

You want to know about tough guys? I have the toughest guy for you right here and his name is Darnell Johnson. @frithjofr. Johnson is all about the defense and he isn't ashamed of it. He doesn't need the glory that comes with goals, he gets his enjoyment from denying that glory from others. He isn't the biggest guy out there, standing at only 5'10 and 165 pounds, but he puts all of that frame to work. He has a natural talent on defense and has the strength and skating ability to make sure he always stays in front of the play on defense. Simply put, Darnell can absolutely lock down the ice and keep the puck out of his team's net. Okay, okay. So he's a good defenseman, but in what ways are he a tough guy? Well in pre-season he spent 65 minutes in the penalty box and with his 91 hits he isn't afraid to throw his body around and make opponents feel the hurt. Darnell is an absolute unit in the SMJHL for the Anchorage Armada and will be a true tough guy enforcer at his peak.

Where to get your Hits and Blocks in the draft: Looking to add a little grit? Looking to add a stand-up player to stand-up for your stars? Look no further than Lethbridge's General Hammer @Biggest Mac . With only 865 minutes played in the pre-season, Hammer managed to post a league leading 152 hits, 25 hits clear of second place. While his 46 shots blocked in the same time puts him a little shy of the top ten, his production per minute is up there with the best. Most other players topping the respective hits and blocks charts also happened to feature quite heavily on the Penalty Kill, while Hammer was notoriously scarce on the PK. Perhaps that's because of his league leading 115 penalty minutes. That should definitely be a concern for any team looking at the prospect, but does the benefit outweigh the potential cost? Hammer could very well find a home on any number of teams looking to beef up their defensive corps or bring in some grit.
