S81 PT #5: Let’s Mix It Up Due: Sunday, March 23rd @ 11:59 PM PST

Written Option 2:

Being a member of the pride this season has been crazy to see what this team can do. All of our forwards have been near a point per game at the very least and while Webb is leading the charge, it's really hard to ignore the insane stats that Nostradamus has put up. JUST KIDDING, Justin Time. Dude is on another level at like 41 years old at this point. League leader in wins, GAA, shutouts, save percentage, and an absolutely insane near 48 GSAA. Throw the MVP at the old timer, not many seasons left in the tank at this pace for sure. Also, spidey, i think you had a fantastic sesaon as well along with Winters, Shaw, and the rest of the team. It's been an absolute blast to be apart of and if there were multiple MVPs I'm sure we'd have a few of them.

Option 1:

When people say they like parity, I'm not quite sure they truly do. It's think fans secretly love having that dominant team and, if it's not their team, they want to be the ones to finally slay that mighty dragon. We've had some dominant teams in the SHL and this season is no different. The San Francisco Pride are that team right now. After winning the Cup the last two seasons, they are once again the clear favourites to win back-to-back-to-back Challenge Cups. The higher-ups don't want that to happen so I have a suggestion that may help them.

Playoff matchups are decided by seeding. The higher seeds play the lower seeds and it makes sense. You need to reward regular season performance. Well, not this season. To increase the chance of the Pride getting eliminated, we are having higher seeds play each other. The set up is simple. 1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8, 9v10, 11v12, 13v14, 15v16. There will also be no re-seeding so the higher seeds will keep playing each other all the way to the Finals. If the Pride make it through that gauntlet, they've have earned that back-to-back-to-back Championship.

Option 2: Let’s start by looking at the goaltenders and see who could have a good shot at actually winning the MVP at this position. The obvious pick there is Justin Time from the San Francisco Pride. He led goaltenders in the historically important start, since he was first in number of wins, first in Goals Against Average, first in save percentage and tied for first in shutouts. On top of this, he finished first in goals saved above average with a lead of nearly 20 more goals saved than his closest opponent. The other goaltender that could have a shot at the trophy is Evil Kyle Murray from the Baltimore Platoon, but his team probably finished too low in the standings for him to get enough consideration. On defence, the most deserving pick, in my opinion, would be Kal Akar Kekkonen from the Seattle Argonauts for his impressive 29 goals on the season which is seven more than the second closest. He also finished third for most points by a defenceman.

This is something I recently heard on the regulation podcast where they had a sports improvement draft, where they each came up and drafted random ideas they had that would make any kind of sport more exciting and one of them that id really love to see for hockey would be that each team has a button, most likely controlled by a player on the bench or by a coach, that turns the lights in the arena off. You can use this button for 10 seconds each game, so knowing the best moments to use it would be crucial and I just think this would be hella fun and exciting and random. Like how would you use the button? Penalty kill? Or maybe on a breakaway? Who knows, the possibilities are endless. I think button specialists would become a thing or maybe players who see better in the dark or whatever else might help you be better prepared for this.

The Sarmad Khan Trophy for the most valuable player as voted by all users on the site very rarely goes to anyone other than the top points scorer in the league, which makes sense because goals wins games.

However, goal scoring (or assists on goals scored) isn't the only thing a team needs to win games, and it could very well be the case that a player other than the top goal scorer was a key instrument in letting the team outrgow their potential.

An excellent example of a player who was instrumental to their teams placement in the league (in a positive way) in S81 is Jarrod Lakemore.

Lakemore leads the Buffalo Stampede in goals and assists, recording 14 more points than the next best and 22 more than the numbers 3 and 4 on his team, for a total of 99 points. 7 of those goals were game winners, and without his excellence, I am not sure whether Buffalo would've even made the playoffs. If that isn't valuable, I don't know what is.

Written Option 2:

The Sarmad Khan Trophy (often probably could be just the most points winner). I will go with 3 options. 1 forward other than Webb, 1 defenseman, and 1 goalie
Forward- This would be a hard one. I could argue for Shadow Fenix in Seattle. Ubba Lodbrok in Philadelphia would probably be my choice. 3rd in points in the league. Most assists in the league. Has an insane TA-GA ratio of +34. Also produced the most PIMs this season.
Defenseman- There are a few players that I could nominate here. Leading Shot blocker Jaden Tanner, the shutdown Texan Hodor, Dman points leader Stavros Kondos. But honestly how about Kondos' teammate Kal Akar Kekkonen. Leading the league among Defenseman in goals with 29. 3rd in points with 56. 16 powerplay goals and 6 game winning goals. Tied for 4th among defenseman with 85 hits.
Goalie- I mean trying to argue against any other goalie other than Justin Time is just wrong. 40 wins. 2.54 GAA, .923 S%, 5 shutouts. All lead the league. Not even a question here.

Written Option 2: Often the top scoring forward is heavy favorite for the Sarmad Khan Trophy (the players MVP) but it doesn’t has to be so. Select a player or few players from defencemen, goalies and forwards other than Logan Webb (sorry spidey) who you think should be in consideration when people are voting for MVP and how they compare against Webb. Who you predict will end up winning the Sarmad Khan Trophy?

The players MVP tends to go to Forwards because they have the biggest numbers and flashiest stats whilst other roles like goal tender are believed to be a product of the team regardless of whether or not its true so its not a surprise to see it so dominated in that regard. With that said I decided to compile a list of 3 other players besides Spidey; 1 forward, 1 defensemen and 1 goalie. For Forward I was torn between Trevor Lahey, Gordon-William Gibbles and Slava-Ukraini Heroyam-Slava as all 3 had stood head and shoulders above their team but I decided in the end to be a bit biased and choose SUHS as not only did they stand out on their team but it actually mattered in the standings for their team. SUHS put up 49 goals good enough for 2nd, 1 behind Logan Webb with a league leading 22% shooting percentage. For D I decided to choose a rising star in Kal Akar Kekkonen, anyone who looks at top defense stats would not be surprised by this nom as they managed a crazy 29 goals as a defensemen with a large gap between him and the 2nd place then 2nd place and 10th place which is ridiculous. Lastly for goaltenders I had to pick the current goalie GOAT in the SHL, Justin Time. Every season he comes back and tops the league in what feels like every category for goalies even now nearly 10 years after his prime, Justin Time is timeless

Grzegorz makes one and only one change to the rules for this round of the playoffs. The game is played exactly as normal for three periods. When the final buzzer sounds, if the score is tied, the game goes to neither overtime nor a shootout. Instead, both goalies skate to center ice and drop the gloves. Tie games in the playoffs can only be made more intense by deciding the result with a goalie fight. Unfortunately for the league, this almost guarantees that the immortal outer god Justin Time will threepeat with the San Francisco Pride. Perhaps the league's only hope, indeed mankind's only hope, is to send forth the Polish avenger to fight him. For this to occur, the Panthers still have to make it through the playoff gauntlet fairly. There is very little doubt about the Pride's ability; can the Panthers face them down one more time? And will the eventual champion be decided by a goalie fight?

Instead of changing the game individually, let's try tweaking the format in a way I've seen used in other sports leagues. In several Asian baseball leagues, the high seed starts with an automatic 1-0 series lead, meaning there's extra work for underdogs trying to pull off the upset. But since we're so desperate for parity, we're going to do the opposite - the LOW seed starts with a 1-0 lead, with Game 1s de facto cancelled. It would probably fuck up the regular season, because who's going to want the 4 seed (and, in some years, the 3 seed), but hey, we're trying to make it more unfair to be good, are we not?

I'd rather that than like, multi-puck, or extended shorthanded time (granted for QCC that one wouldn't be a bad thing. all hail the QCC power kill. league SHG leaders what, two, three seasons in a row?)

If Cale would make any rule for the playoffs it would be that any team with an animal crest/name was not allowed to play with a goalie. It would create absolute chaos as not only would you be playing 6 on 5 for entire games against incredible teams but would also make the game scoring go insane for over under bets and would surely lead to a new team wining it all this season. Of course this would hit some of the favourites the hardest which is why Cale has come up with this rule. Most of the top teams and contenders would suddenly not have a goalie in net including the Pride and Inferno, as well as the Wolfpack. This may give the forge the competitive edge they needed to finally win the ship again and would no doubt shake a lot of things up in the matchups. Overall I think it would create a lot of fun chaos as the only other time in FHM I have seen a team not have a goalie in net it resulted in a 30 goal thrashing.

I really don't mind when teams win back to back. Even a three-peat. Good for them. It takes skill and dedication to build a dynasty. The thing is for me, personally, I always cheer for the underdog, so once a team wins once, the next season they are no longer the underdog, thus I guess that's why I am complicated. Also I cheer for the team I bet to win in the casino.

Speaking of complicated. The Mandalorian. So rumours in season 3 were that Kathleen Kennedy took too much control of the show and pissed of Filoni and Favreau and the season was jumbled and kind of hard to follow because of her influence. There hasn't been much speak of any more development since season three ended but word came that she was 'retiring' and then boom. Gossip starts of the movie about The Mandalorian. Coincidence? Probably but dang sometimes i wonder what Grogu and Din are up to. Bringing them in cold in the outer rim? Maybe. Pedro Pascal may have become way too expensive, even as only a voiceover. I hope the movie happens. Favreau is still a God in my eyes.

Written Option 2:

If San Francisco goalie Justin Time doesn't win the MVP award this season, he will have been robbed harder than he robbed any shooter this season, which is saying quite a lot. Time's performance this season was one of the greatest by a goalie of All Time (ahem).

Sixteen seasons ago the SHL moved to using FHM8, and along with that move came a sharp increase in the goal scoring rates, and conversely, a decrease in the goal-stopping stats of goalies. Since S66, the highest save percentage (minimum 33 games played) and the highest Goals Saved Above Average were .919 and 38 respectively.  Justin Time destroyed both of those records in S81 with a .923 save percentage and whopping 49 GSAA. No goalie in the last sixteen seasons was as dominant as Time was in S81.

It might be tempting to point to superstar Logan Webb and his skater teammates as the true heroes of the Pride, but this season at least, no player was more valuable to his team than Justin Time.
