TASK ONE:
If you are a player in the Challenge/Four Star Cup: How is your player feeling for the Finals? Are they nervous or excited? Are they ready? Write at least 150 words about the few days before the beginning of the Finals for your player and how they prepared for the series.

My player's preparation before the finals included repetition of practice drills, rest and deep meditations. Terrance Nova took his first finals appearance seriously, no distractions, lots of patience, lots of perseverance. Each day he would wake up, meditate, eat breakfast, go do drills at the practice facility, meditate some more etc. Nova had been waiting all his life for this moment; the SHL Finals. He was ready, more than ready but also anxious to be prepared and not just complacent to have made it this far. Neither nervous or overly excited, he was content as ever and grateful for the golden opportunity in hand. His only feeling was hope. He wanted to prove what he can do in the highest level, a rank that most barely get a chance to get to. It was his calling to execute what he's been training for beyond his career. He knew he needed to be emotionless, glarry eyed and sharply conditoned for the most competitive round of the SHL and responded with extreme discipline.

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S39 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

I have 2 choices for the unsung hero, they are defenseman Eero Hämäläinen and winger Pedro Sarantez. Pedro Sarantez finished out the last playoffs of his career on a strong note, posting 6 assists, 9 points, 34 shots in 15 games, playing just over 17 and a half minutes per game. After hitting the dark side of regression, Pedro ended his SHL tenure with an SHL cup and an effective run. He provided much needed depth to a Chiefs team that needed it, getting the highest amount of points out of all his linemates on the 3rd line. Eero Hämäläinen might not be considered an "unsung hero" in this playoffs since his dominance was well in show, but his performance was beyond what people expected and that what made him so special. Without him stepping up with a point per game (15 points) 22 shots blocked and just under 20 minutes per games playing on the 3rd line, Chiefs would have not have won the cup so easily. Minnesota had trouble in the past with the depth not showing up in the playoffs and these two guys delivered for the squad big time this time around.

TASK SIX: Finals series always show surprises. Who will have to stand out the most from each team in order to win it? Make a prediction for potential series MVPs. Must be at least 150 words and mention at least one player from each team.

My choices for series MVPs would be between Timo Haas and my player, Terrance Nova. Obviously I cannot make a prediction at this point because the series is over with but if I could turn back time, those two players would be my choice for potential MVPs. Since the Chiefs are a better well rounded team than the Panthers, Haas will have to show out hard for this series, which we all know he's capable of doing. Hes been phenomenal between the pipes for LA all playoffs, outperforming every goalie he has faced so far, and will be the main guy, the MVP, depended on to execute in the final stretch against a hot Chiefs team that can overwhelm any type of defense. If someone asked who the best center in the league is at this very moment, I'd reply Terrance Nova. I don't like to brag but I do not think there is any defense that can stop Nova from putting the puck in the net in game breaking situations. He will definitely have to be himself, fully locked in if he wants a cup. So he will also be someone to watch out for when talking about finals MVP, as he leads the Chiefs in points going into the final round.

TASK ONE:
I kicked off my offseason by planning an immediate trip to Ireland, because I knew I had to get some ice time in with the boys on the IIHF squad if we were going to repeat- or better yet, beat, our Silver medal performance back from S38. So, of course, I called up TheDangaZone and made sure I would be able to make the first practice with the boys. I think if we come together early enough this season and put the work in, we've got the talent to make another strong push. It'll be good to see everyone again, can't wait to get back to winning ways. Of course... I'm not going to show up on the first day of practice... it wouldn't be the same if I didn't show up a few days earlier in my annual effort to drink several dozens of Guinness beers before the big tourney. Sure, they're available in the US, but it's just not quite the same. I've gotta get that genuine Irish stuff to get the real buzz going- along with some Jameson, to boot. Tie one on, THEN start honing my hockey again. That's the best way to go about it, I'm convinced.

Code:
TASK TWO:
If I'm pegging a particular player that I'm deeiming an unsung hero, I'm picking Ben Turska Jr. from the LA Panthers. In 16 games, Turska has only managed 4 points - he's not going to be bringing in any attention from those who simply look at the top of each team's scoring table and never past the top 3 players. At the same time, with a +7, he was tied for the highest rating on team, so clearly, when he is on the ice, his team has an advantage. That could be due to, in part, his 36 hits doled out to a mere 7 taken. Turska spends his shifts pushing the opposition off the puck, and keeping possession for his boys. Throw in the 22 shots blocked, in UNDER 20 minutes per game, and you've got a guy who's contributing out of his mind defensively to his team. In a league that mostly cares about points (and which league doesn't), he's a clear cut unsung hero.

TASK SIX:
For Minnesota to come out on top of the Finals series, it was apparent that goal tender Olli O'Koivu was going to have to pull off a massive series. The Chiefs were the lesser armed team in terms of scoring in the finals, so in order to close that goals for and goals against gap on LA, they'd have to be more staunch on the back end, because it wasn't likely they were going to beat them otherwise. O'Koivu met expectations, posting a .919 save percentage and a 2.47 GAA, conceding only 3 wins to opposing teams in the ENTIRE tourney. Finals save percentages of .972, .974 and .944 in 3 straight wins paved the way for the Chiefs to win the Cup, and he's deserving of the MVP.

On the other side of the coin, LA needed to get the puck past O'Koivu, so the onus in the finals feel upon their teams' highest goal scorers to get the job done. It was Nicolas Winter, Sophia Bennett and Jean-Luc Reflieux who really needed to step up and start driving pucks into the net. With 7 goals and 11 assists over the course of the playoffs, it is JLR's performance that woudl have been most deserving of the MVP, had LAP been able to pull off the win. Yet, in the finals, LA only had 2 games where they managed more than 2 goals, a 4 goal win in game two, and a 3 goal night that ended in a win in game 3. Of course, it didn't happen again, and nor did another win for LA, who just got shut down by the aforementioned O'Koivu.

Gary Grease has kicked off his offseason by travelling with his good friend Wuma Duce down to Mexico for some fun. Not even one hour into their road trip, Wuma had somehow offended a ranking cartel employee, and it was up to big Gary Grease to get them back across the border safely! A few weeks later Gary began training hard on the ice, in lieu of his potential call up to the Winnipeg Jets this upcoming season. Gary believes that if he trains hard and has a good training camp, he could potential crack the deep Jets roster. If Winnipeg ends up looking elsewhere to fill out their blueline for s40, it's still a great situation for Gary since he can use all of this extra training to help the Colorado Mammoths another season for their Four-Star cup run! All in all, aside from the short-lived trip to Mexico, Gary Grease won't have too much of a vacation this offseason with all the training that is required of him.

1. Joshua Woodcroft has spent the majority of his time since their berth into the finals doing a few things, in order to get himself onto the competitive level he wants to be at. A lot of time has been spent reviewing tape, trying to see better ways to improve his game in order to be the most effective player he can be in the final series. In addition, he’s been training a full schedule in order to bulk up and get into best physical shape he can with the time remaining. Overall, it’s starting to get at him but he’s confident in himself and what he can do, and feels that the guys with him are the best in the league. It’s going to be a good series and with the team we have I feel we’ve got a good shot at bringing it home, but we’ll see, sometimes shit happens.

2.The unsung hero of the playoffs for me was Ostap Maksimov, the silk handed, minas touch of scoring boasting a 50 PERCENT scoring rate my god, if Zeus himself hasn’t worn those gloves I’d be shocked. He came in big at every opportunity he had at his disposal and quite frankly he put up a ridiculous level of effort in every game he could. But that’s not the only reason, him and his line were solid on the defensive side of things too with him sporting a team second plus 8 all together with 12 shot blocks and an average of 21 minutes a game played, wow this guys a pillar of solidarity and holds up his end more than any thought was possible. That’s why, I think Ostap Maksimov the 13 point scoring, silky mitted, drop dead beaut of a player is the unsung hero of the Season 39 Smjhl four star cup final

6. In order to win the four star cup you really have to have the talent, the effort and the willingness to go out and put forth that extra level of effort to bring home the cup, on each side we have plenty of stars but the difference makers stand out above the rest. Those two and Gabriel Wong of the Vancouver Whalers and Joakim Lindquist of the St Louis Scarecrows, each of these players are pass first point collectors who share the same primary objective, to make room for the wingers to put it in reaaaaal dirty like boy. They both specialise in seeing through the holes and putting the puck with the right man, like an all rubber version of the bachelor in which no one starts nekking. In the end it’s coming down to which team has the most hustle, but the team that wins should see either of these two on top of the pack, leading the way, and driving it home for their respective teams.

How has your player kicked off their offseason? Are they traveling? Meeting up with friends and partying? Following the games? Write at least 150 words about the beginning of your player’s offseason. Must include at least one other player.

Maurizio's offseason started a lot earlier than he thought. He had a decent playoff run, but you can't always win. Congrats to Minnesota with the win, Arrivabene's mentor, Ray Pejonis is really proud of your and Pedro Sarantez's accomplishment. Maurizio started his offseason off with traveling back to his native Brescia, Italy, enjoyed his time at home, finnaly. He hadn't returned home since his contract dispute with Seattle after the S35 draft. After a short while in Italy, he went to Latvia to meet up with his teammate in SHL and in team Latvia, Isaac Cormier-Hale and his mentor, Ray Pejonis. It's time to bring out the pain, it's the time to fulfill his potential and be a instrumental piece in Winnipeg's quest in getting an another cup. Only time will tell what will happen, but Maurizio is for damn sure Winnipeg will come back and will come back even stronger.

Winnipeg's playoff run had a lot of people step up, but there was one player, that just stepped up his game so much, that it shouldnt go unnoticed. Winnipeg has a good mix of youthful superstar defenders and veterans, but there's a guy in between.

Alek Koivu has never been the flashiest player, he does his job and does it well. His 9 points in 13 games were enough to be second in the Winnipeg's defensive scoring, which he achieved in only 16 minutes of ice time. While Isaac Cormier-Hale, one of the best defenseman in the SHL got caught up in being a nuisance and a tough guy, Alek Koivu quietly stepped up with the highest P/20 in his team with 0,87 and the fourth highest shot percentage with 12,50%, only behind the two rooks and the goat - Maurizio Arrivabene, Vijanupatan Singh and Luke Fleming. Koivu has always been the quiet top 4 defenseman, behind the two Jets stars, Max Weber and Isaac Cormier-Hale, but this was the time he stepped up and stepped up massively. Sad to see that Winnipeg couldnt win it all, but they are still in their prime and will be a powerhouse for years to come.

The Minnesota Chiefs had a lot of players who stepped up, but the one who stands out the most is Terrance Nova. The former Falcon was a consistent scorer in the quest of getting Minnesota's first cup since season 12. He racked up 10 goals and 9 assists in 15 games. The one stat that I'm most surprised of is that he had no penalty minutes in the 15 games. Truly a MVP of his team and an insturmental piece of Minnesota's cup run.

As for the Los Angeles Panthers, the most dominant player on the ice and the MVP should be Jean-Luc Reflieux. 18 points in 16 games is not the most important stat. The most important thing is that he simply said fuck you to everyone and just took over games all by himself. In game 5 against the Winnipeg Jets, Reflieux got two goals and an assist and he was everywhere. Hitting, passing scoring, you name it. Sadly, they didnt go all the way, the Minnesota Chiefs were too much. Congratulations to the Chiefs for winning it all.

Big Manius has once again begun is offseason training of intensive physical workouts and prostitutes. The past two seasons have left a bad taste in Manius’s mouth much like Esa’s chicken parms. After the Jets being the odds on favorites for winning the Challenge Cup for the past two seasons and coming up short, has hurt. Therefore, it is off to the gym and back to swimming the length of Lake Winnipeg. Manius hopes to fight off his old age that he jokingly refers to as his regression. In addition to the physical workouts, Manius intends to keep his mind sharp by writing witty exercises designed by the league so Manius can fight his “regression” in hopes of being a strong presence on the ice next season. Big also intends on padding his bank account this offseason by returning to the SHL radio show that he does with that retired scrub Slappy Mcdoodle. In conclusion, that is how Big Manius will spending his time this off-season.

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S39 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

My choice for the player who would be considered the unsung hero for the Season 39 playoffs would be from the Los Angeles Panthers and that player is Danny “Bananas” Foster. During the Panther’s run to the Western Conference championship. Mr. Foster was able to put up one goal and nine assists in 10 games. Averaging a point a game is a little odd for a player that is known as the biggest goon in the SHL. Along with his 10 points, Foster also had three fights during Los Angeles’s run to Challenge Cup finals. Granted he did not win any of those fights as they occurred against two of Winnipeg’s toughest players, Big Manius and Isaac Cormier-Hale, which Danny had to fight twice. Although Danny did not lose those fights either. The second fight against Cormier-Hale also saw Mr. Foster ejected from the game, which is something you do not normally see during the playoffs.

My choice for the standout player for the Los Angeles Panthers during the finals is Danny “Bananas” Foster. This scrappy defenseman is on everyone watch out for list. Because if you are not watching him, he just might starting punching you in the face. This past season saw Mr. Foster fail at winning another Turd Furguson award but it did see him the defenseman put up 29 points and 101 pims. Although in the playoffs Bananas step up his game in the playoffs and had 10 points in 12 games heading in the finals. My choice for the standout player for the Minnesota Chiefs during the finals is Jonathan Lundberg. Granted the name does not have the flash of Sebastian Strange, Lord Pretty Flacko or even Alonzo Garbanzo. Although for several season now Jonathan Lundberg has quietly put up so amazing numbers. This past season Jonathan Lundberg continued his quiet production by scoring 14 goals and had 25 assists in his 39-point regular season.

With the disappointment in the playoffs for the Calgary Dragons, Michael Boychuk quickly went for a night on the town with Esa Anrikkanen and others to lift his spirits. Esa, Randleman, and others have been on the Dragons together for a long time. While Boychuk has been to the big show plenty of times with Calgary, both winning and losing, this time it hurt more than usual. This team felt special. The first thing after that was that he went home and visited his family who live in the city of Calgary, where he has played his whole career. That calmed him down for sure, as being loved is always something that helps in times of need. He also took to the road to Toronto, where he visited his cousin, the current GM of the VHL's Toronto Legion, Travis Boychuk. They do of course see each other sometimes during the SHL season where the Dragons play Toronto in the SHL, but it is always nice to see family.

Another year that the Halifax Raiders failed to miss the playoffs, player Geoff Higgins has been settling into his new apartment complex at downtown LA. Higgins who last year partied it up with the Halifax Raiders when the off-season started has turned a new leaf and quit partying all together. He now resides in Los Angeles in a one bedroom apartment away from everyone else. Higgins have been going to the home games of his SHL team the Los Angeles Panthers with fellow teammates Jon Toner and James Johnson who were both drafted in the same year. The Off-Season which is just beginning will be a long one Higgins told media and when he was asked if he will be playing in the Panthers jersey next season he told them that maybe but it is more than likely that he will spend another season in Halifax bunking up with GM FourFour and skating on a line with Berger and Esselleum.

Dieter's offseason started off after the New England Wolfpack was knocked out of round two of the playoffs, and though it sucked to not make it to the finals, he had home to look forward to. Former captain of the Wolfpack Nathan Russell and Dieter were very lucky to be able to adopt a precious baby girl after considering it seriously for a year since their wedding (and sooner, if Deets were being honest). So, all of his offseason and any time off is now devoted to finishing getting her bedroom ready and spending time with Nate. They don't want to have a big party or anything, but teammate Mia Landvik has met the baby and soon enough, the rest of the Wolfpack will as well. It's an offseason of sticky hands, Cheerios on the floor and in the couch, and no sleep, but it's worth it to them. Deets will try to focus on IIHF, but it will certainly be hard to be away.

Task 2: My choice for unsung hero would be Matthew Leetch. Matthew plays in all situations and really took his game to a new level this post-season. You couldn't ask for a better performance from a defenseman and I think this post-season may have been a sign of things to come in the future. Leetch put up 14 points in 16 games, had a +7 plus/minus rating, dished out 20 hits, and blocked 22 shots. Leetch's play was undoubtedly a big part of the Panthers overall success this post-season. He can do it all and is a great option to play in any situation. Leetch is the Panthers captain and does a lot to help keep the team motivated off of the ice. Leetch stepped up his play in big games and seemed to show up more and more on the score sheet as the playoffs progressed. Every team in the league would be thrilled to have such a player and the Panthers have a true building block here.

Vakarian has been relaxing for most of the off-season up to this point, taking the brief time off in order to visit her friends, family, and recharging for next season. Lyndis isn't the type of person to be a party animal so quiet time at home and spending the day with friends watching movies has been her premier choice. She has been seen just last week to have been leaving Kelowna and arriving at Toronto to train with her trainer Cynthia Taylor who still currently resides in the region. Vakarian has been working harder to find more consistency in her game and develop a more consistent routine as well. As Toronto is near the Hamilton region, Vakarian has also been rumored to have had a few meetings with Hamilton GM Ben Dover, likely about her possibly coming up next season for the Steelhawks. Other than that, she has not been following the games as when asked about Minnesota and the Panthers, she responded with "who?".

My unsung hero for the SMJHL playoffs as that has been the only ones I have chosen to follow would be a player from the Prince George Firebirds, Paddy Kane Rielly. He's the captain for the Firebirds and has been a scoring menace since his debut in the league and he's shown off what he can do in these playoffs. In his twelve games played, he has scored 7 goals which leads his team, the next leading scorer in the playoffs has 8 with 3 more games played. Reilly put the team on his back and tried to do everything possible to carry Prince George to another 4 star cup and took a ton of punishment in doing so. He tanked 29 hits in 12 games as the opposition took notice of his scoring talent at 23.33% shooting average and pounded the body on him non stop. Without Reilly, Prince George wouldn't have even made the playoffs much less pushing St. Louis to game 7.

I'm gonna keep it simple and say that the goalies are going to have to be the ones that will need to stand out the most from the St Louis Scarecrows and the Vancouver Whalers in order for their team to win it all. Simply put, if your goalie never lets the puck in, you'll always have the chance to win. Now Julian O'Sullivan and Friedrich Schmidt are not SHL level goaltenders yet but they have to put in the effort so that every single game, their team has the chance to win the game. As this has been written after the playoffs are over, we can see that Friedrich Schmidt was one of the MVPs of this series as he restricted the Whalers to scoring less than 3 goals several times in the playoffs and his low scoring team was able to steal games as a result of that.

The Colorado Mammoths experienced a quick exit from the SMJHL playoffs, and the Buffalo Stampede received a worse fate in S39, failing to qualify for the Challenge Cup Playoffs. For both Nico Grøss' junior team and parent team, it was an early summer, so the young man from Switzerland decided why not make the most of it? Nico would begin his summer flying back from Colorado to his hometown of Naters, Switzerland to reunite with his family, girlfriend, and his good friend and Buffalo teammate Brynjar Tusk, and from there he set sail on a well-deserved European vacation. Starting in Berlin, Nico toiled in the night life of the city and enjoyed several long nights of drinking and partying with the locals, and there's sure to be many more nights like this before Nico's vacation is out. The only hope is the Swiss forward does not disregard his training before the S40 season, where he'll likely be making his rookie debut for the Buffalo Stampede.

TASK TWO: 158 Words

Each team has their respective unsung heroes, as it's the abundance of greatness that makes up the whole of a winner. The Los Angeles Panthers and the Minnesota Chiefs, the S39 Challenge Cup finalists, are no different, and underneath their star power each team has their fair share of high end depth. For the Minnesota Chiefs, their unsung hero coms in the form of a man that sits only 8th in team scoring for the playoffs, however his value to Minnesota's blue line cannot be understated. I'm speaking of Mattias Holmberg, a Swedish defenseman who had played some of the most valuable minutes for the Chiefs during their S39 run. The defenseman averages just over 23.5 minutes per game, which is more than any other defenseman – including franchise keystone Alonzo Garbanzo. A staunch defender, Holmberg seems to be the glue that holds the Chiefs' blue line together, bookmarked by his 22 hits, +2 rating, and 29 shot blocks.

We won the President Trophy this season so we were expected to be the best team in the league but we failed to win a playoffs series again but as a top seed. The offense is still not great but if I can help the team defensively, I'm sure we don't have to worry about scoring as long we don't let the opponent outscore us. I'm also working on my skating and my endurance. I need to play on both sides of the ice so I'll need a lot of energy to perform well. I am also working on my strength. In the playoffs, the players are way more physical which can be very annoying to me. I'm not the strongest player the opponent will take advantage of me not able to do much. I hope I will be ready for next season. I think we have the team to win the CHallenge Cup so there shouldn't be any excuse for another defeat.

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S39 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

Timo Haas is the unsung hero so far in the S39 SHL Playoffs. The Los Angeles Panthers goaltender has won 7 of the 8 games he played so far. He has not a game against the number seed in the west, the Calgary Dragons. He has been the most dominant player in the series against the Winnipeg Jets who are the favorite to win the Challenge Cup. Currently, Timo Haas has the best stats in the postseason as a goalie. He has the best GAA stat in the playoffs at a 1.89 in which he's leading with a big margin than the rest and his save percentage is at .941 which is also the best in the playoffs. He has only allowed 16 goals in the postseason so far and has one shutout as well. We all agree that the Panthers would be the least favorable to make to the Challenge Cup series but thanks to Timo Haas, they are proving that they are a contender

TASK THREE: Create a championship graphic featuring the matchup of the Finals. Must include both team names, both team logos, a representation of S39, and one additional recognition of each team (team colors, a render, etc.)

TASK FOUR: Unscramble the names of these four players who will be competing in the Challenge Cup Finals. Send the answers to me by forum PM. Please make the subject of the message “CW Word Scramble” or something along those lines. [Grading: 1 TPE for participation, 0.5 TPE for each correct answer]

TASK ONE

Playoffs have been tough for Benis Smol so far. Yes, his team, Whalers of Vancouver, has found it's way to the finals and will be playing against hot St. Louis Scarecrows. But individually it's been a real struggle. He hasn't scored a single goal and his +/- has been really low for a team going to the finals. The only good thing is that Benis has won faceoffs regularly and has the best percentage of the whole Whalers squad. But he's not letting his head down. He's in the finals, the team is doing great. Not all players have to score 10 goals, some have to take the dirty jobs on ice and push the team further. And that's what Benis is about to do. No unnecessary thoughts, just concentrating on his duties and doing everything with 110%. Keeping it simple is the key. No rituals, no special treatments on this series. Just a clear head and we're gonna win this. Whalers
