Well here we are. After almost two years of start and stops, Kanye West is back with this album. The timeline for this album has been very sporadic. In early 2015 rappers and actors including Seth Rogen had claimed to have heard the album. We have had multiple album title changes (I still feel like So Help Me God is the best title of the bunch). We have had multiple rants about so many different things including the epic beef with Wiz Khalifa over twitter. Finally we have had the album be delayed in the days actually leading up to the album and as of this time, Kanye says the album is unfinished. Overall it has been a sporadic and seemingly unfinished time in the life of Kanye and quite frankly that is my feeling on the album as a whole.

The album starts off beautifully with the gospel inspired Ultralight Beam. It starts with a young girl talking about the lord and then we get these light and ethereal guitar riffs mixed with that trap sound that Kanye has become accustomed to using since Cruel Summer. I don't mind Kanye's singing and it is a real beautiful moment. The choir vocals and the verse from Kelly Price is so powerful. It really works well together but the hero of the song is Chance The Rapper. I am not a fan of Chance. I found Acid Rap to be whiny and bloated. His verse on here is confident and swaggy. Kanye was really able to get the best out of Chance and I quite enjoy the song.

That is one thing I can commend Kanye on, his ability to pull the best out of different artists is the equivilent to Sidney Crosby in the music realm. One only has to look at Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1, where we got the best vocals from Cudi in years. Lyrically this song is trash and one only has to look at the first bar from Ye;

It is so cringy and really turns me off of this song, The second part of this song is great with Future 2.0 dropping a fun verse and Kanye's verse feeling very personable, which is something you don't always get from Ye. Also the beat drop on this song is a banger and is something I would expect from a trap beat.

Another example of extracting the best out of someone is with Swizz Beats' beat for Famous which features this great Nina Simone sample and a fun ending with a cut up and looped sample from Sister Nancy. It is also one of the better Ye verses with that great Taylor Swift line.

Feedback is the closest to Yeezus that we get on this record with that layered reverb and industrial vibe. Plus it has a wrestler reference which always gets me. Kanye is a sense is really the Steve Austin of wrestling. Sadly while I dig the music on this song, the verse is average.

And that is a big critique on a lot of these songs. The verse on Wolves is not needed and doesn't sound right. Freestyle 4 is fun but boring after a while and the beat could of been used for so much better. I did like the following line though;

What the fuck right now?
What the fuck right now?
What the, what the fuck right now?
What if we fuck right now?
What if we fucked right in the middle
Of this motherfuckin' dinner table?

The other standouts on the album are Waves which is very gorgeous and Chris Brown is great on it. Real Friends is a very personal look at the people around Kanye and may give us more of an insight into his trust issues. No More Parties in LA actually has Kanye dropping a better verse than the king of rap, Kendrick Lamar. Old Kanye is a cheeky shot at people who always harp back to "the good old College Drop Out Days". But man alive, FML is the best song I have heard all year. The beat is minimal but deep at the same time. Kanye is very introspective and personal which is always great and fucking Abel drops a beautiful verse. Just a great song in general.


There is some real trash on this album though. Lowlights is just that while Highlights is rushed and sonically confusing. The demo version of that song is so much better. Fade is corny with Post Malone dropping hot garbage onto an already average beat. The already mentioned Wolves is a weird song that again feels off. Thankfully the new version with Sia and Vic Mensa is great.

Overall the album is great musically. The beats are varied and lush. The features are all great and everything feels layered. However the biggest problem with the album is sadly the man whose name is the creator of said project. Kanye sounds lost most of the time and jumps from thought to thought without letting any ideas breath. It also feels very short and disjointed. Kanye dropped arguably his worst album lyrically since 808s but thankfully the music makes it an enjoyable listen. Great attempt at the music but a let down lyrically.
