I think a lot of opinions will change on this move once the forum itself is actually set up with a custom skin, some addons to make player creation + updating easier, hell I think it might be even worthwhile seeing if anybody on the site with the ability to can develop more SHL-specific addons. I think it's hard to see the benefits of this move since its very much in a beta/planning stage right now, but I think the final product has potential to be something really great and a lot better than we have now.

I don't think the notion that we would lose semi-actives who won't follow over is really valid. I mean, it's their choice if they don't, but there's very little work involved for individual users other than resetting your passwords.

Your account will carry over, you won't need to re-register. We'll have a redirection link on this forum if people try to come here instead.

I mean, every time this is brought up people complain that we'll lose members. I don't think this is valid because we should, over time as we improve the little things that jcink restricts us from fixing, retain a larger percentage of recruits who would otherwise go inactive because of how bad our forums here are - a very common complaint.

- No more Ads

Adblocker? I also don't seem to get any ad's on mobile. Not really sure if this is much of an issue. If you're not using an adblocker in 2018, what are you even doing?

- Security is vastly improved

What exactly does this mean? From what I can tell, there is essentially zero personally identifying information used on the site let alone payment information, etc. I could potentially see emails/site passwords being an issue but again, this is something that common sense (not using the same password for everything) comes into play.

- Site would be hosted by a real provider that is accountable for any down times

Accountable in what way? How would a regular user like me be "compensated" in any way, shape, or form from downtime.

- MyBB has a massive list of add-ons we can make use of, this opens it up to allowing us to replace create a player pages with forms to simplify the process, along with a ton of other improvements to the site.

This sounds interesting. Similar I'm assuming to what SCOR does which cuts down on work overall.

- Skins for jcink are somewhat limited, not many people make them anymore since the backend is forum software from 2004

The simplicity of the currently available skins, to me, is a positive. It also doesn't seem to look really like any other forum out there. When I'm here, I know I'm on the SHL.

- With MyBB we can assign individual members with the ability to add users to member groups. This would mean that GMs could add or remove users from Locker Rooms and position heads could manage their groups permissions. I believe this would help a lot with having the right people in the right permission groups.

Wouldn't the amount of effort it takes to make sure every single user has the right permissions when migrating be greater than or at least equal to the amount of effort it takes to make sure perms are correct for a bulk of seasons on the current site?

The "look" of the other forum is essentially a knock-off of every other standard forum out there. While the current site is way too busy, the other in its current iteration is just way too plain jane for my tastes. I'm probably in the minority.
I understand your concerns, the security stuff is more about someone taking over or deleting our entire site with no backup...

As I said in the OP, this is not a complete skin, it's not customized at all for us, save a logo at the top. We would however be able to take any of the huge number of available skins and customize them for the SHL.

I think the benefit of getting simpler player creation and updating outweighs the effort of recreating permissions.

This

Its all minor crap we dont really need. Were all functional here, whats the point of going through all the work, losing semi actives that wont follow and forcing everyone to learm n get used to new stuff just for new skins and a couple bonus features?

Just my opinion

fair point...but when the time comes im sure we can send out a mass mail to all 3044 users with the link of the new address.. it only takes a 2nd to book mark a website.

What if I wanted a conditional 1st instead?

Also, recreating permissions is not difficult and like Teddy said, there's a definite benefit here. The current ones are a mess, and this would give us an excuse to build them from the ground up to ensure people have permissions only where needed, and allow us to cut-down on the work involved in changing permissions when, for example, updaters switch teams or GMs are changed. Having updater masks for individual teams set as moderators in update section, as opposed to the entire "updater" group, or specific members - same goes for GMs.

I don't think that would be needed. We would just edit this site to have a big red text warning at the top telling users it's now the legacy site and provide them with the proper link.

From my direct experience with Jcink it is fucking terrible and we should be moving quickly as possible

It's hard to explain in words, but when you have tried to dive into changing things on the forum, or making this site not seem stuck in the Stone age of the internet, it's impossible and terrible. Jcink is bad and archaic

I don't know much about the security side of things but I'm sure that's not good either

I'm the King of don't change things and this league is doing too much and we should go back to the good old days rah rah rah, but this change is needed. I haven't liked Jcink much for about 35 seasons now

Just to add to that...we can’t mass email the user base anyways

Excited about the move.

Ive never had an issue using Jcink.
While you may not the vast majority do and it becomes a very common discussion topic especially during bigger drafts when the site often crashes or delays the draft. this happened very recently in an SHL draft. the site was up and down all throughout the S38 or S39 SHL draft. On top of that performance on the site was often an issue for mobile users or even just people with older computers. That's not everyone on the site but that's a significant portion.

The fact is this change really doesn't affect you other than having to use a different URL and reset your password. But it helps a very very large portion of our community who, regardless of what some believe, have been experiencing these issues for a long time on our current site.

never mind the whole massive security issues with jcink thing....

*commence complaining*

I am excited about the move. But be ready for a lot of backlash.

I mean water is wet right?

The biggest take away from all this for me, is IF it is possible to add onto the new site, and offer some chances for users to create some QoL improvements for us (if they choose) and it's a probability, then why not use that option which currently, does not exist in our current set up. If we lose semi actives due to a simple site appearance change (which I am sure will be kept fairly common to the current one as to not confuse people) then those members were probably on the verge of ghosting anyways to be honest cause they were never invested currently to begin with.

The main things I see this potentially offering which would make things better overall.

1) Adding some sort of system like SCOR racing has where you input your updates and submit for easier updates
2) Re organizing and stream lining some forum sections (its a mess and over bloated)
3) Re updating the job lists - Seriously guys the job/gm titles is a fucking mess, I dont know who does what anymore

Guess you dont access the site the 3-4 random times a day when the website can't be reached at all, or the days when it takes like 10 seconds to load every page.
