Self-Hosting the Forum - Update
#1

As mentioned in <a href='index.php?showuser=2005' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-74'>crutch</a>'s recent HO roundup post, we ran into a snag when planning for the forum move that was originally proposed here. Essentially the people at Invision Power Boards had misquoted us originally and when we were clarifying how long the process would take they responded asking for an additional $850 USD, on top of the $175 USD cost for a license. Upon hearing this I went about trying to find a way to migrate our existing posts/private messages/etc into an up to date forum.

The forum that we are able to convert to most cleanly is MyBB. MyBB is an open source forum with a large community supporting it. We have to jump through some hoops to move our data from JCINK to a new version of MyBB, but I have successfully done so using a copy of our database from January 2018. There are several things we lose in the conversion including:
  • Passwords: User passwords on jcink use a different form of encryption that varies from regular IPB 1.3 sites, so when we complete the conversion, the passwords do not carry over properly. Users will have to reset their passwords to access the new site after migration.
  • Permissions: Very few of our permissions carry over to the new forum, which I consider a good thing. We can redo a lot of the permissions in this process and clean them up as part of this migration.
  • Signatures: This is an easy copy and paste for you to bring it over yourself after migration.
  • Some Avatars: Avatars that are uploaded to the jcink forum will be lost, avatars linked off-site continue to work as normal.
  • Some Emotes: We will have to recreate a lot of the smilies/emoticons on the new forum, some may be lost.
  • Reputation: The reputation counters and history are lost in the migration.
  • The Arcade: The arcade is an add-on for jcink, we can likely try to add back something similar, but it's not possible to port it over in it's current state.
We have the test forum up and running right now, feel free to connect and take a look. If you would like to log in you will need to perform a password reset. Since it's not hosted at a proper domain, the email will likely go to your spam folder. If you signed up for the SHL after January you won't have an account yet, but you can create one if you'd like.

http://65.110.25.74:8080/mybb/

Please keep in mind that this is a fairly basic setup to get us started, a lot of customization will need to be done in addition to what we are showing you now. Also remember that this is hosted on a development VM of mine, it may not be super fast at times.

Assuming the majority of you are in agreement with this way forward we would like to look at starting this migration following the playoffs this next off-season. The process should take us a couple of days to complete, in that time any posts that are created on the old site would not be carried over to the new site. We would need to delay recruitment until after the move and possibly IIHF too, depending on the timing.

We are mindful that some people may have donated based on the promise of moving to a new version of Invision Power Boards. If anyone donated and is disappointed that we aren't moving to a new version of Invision Power Boards, they can request a refund of their donation. If you would like to do so, reach out to me via PM.

EDIT: I forgot to include WHY we are looking at doing this...

Here are some of the improvements we get out of moving to the new system:
- No more Ads
- Security is vastly improved
- Site would be hosted by a real provider that is accountable for any down times
- MyBB has a massive list of add-ons we can make use of, this opens it up to allowing us to replace create a player pages with forms to simplify the process, along with a ton of other improvements to the site.
- Skins for jcink are somewhat limited, not many people make them anymore since the backend is forum software from 2004
- With MyBB we can assign individual members with the ability to add users to member groups. This would mean that GMs could add or remove users from Locker Rooms and position heads could manage their groups permissions. I believe this would help a lot with having the right people in the right permission groups.

I don't think mybb is the way we should go. It doesn't seem like a clear upgrade over jcink. It's a lateral move. Unless we're given the ability to add modules that we develop for the site.

Actually you bring up something I didn't really clarify in my main post. What's better....

Let me edit the OP to make it more clear why we are looking at moving.

A big thing for me would whether or not we're able to develop stuff for the site. Are we?

Great work to get this moving Teddy. I am all for this 100% and look forward to the change. This site has served it's purpose for sometime, but an upgrade is needed. I've seen a lot of QoL improvements on other sim sites and feel with some more creativity available we will see some sweeping changes for the betterment of the league. Look forward to seeing this go through.
