Workhorse of the Game: (LW) Flacko Lagerfield -  Falcons

G  A  P  +/- PIM S  H  SB GA TA FO     MP     PP MP  PK MP
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
1  0  1    1     0  3   2   0  0  0   0/0     22:17  5:12   1:37

For tonight’s workhorse of the game we don’t have to look much further than the first star but, let’s take a bigger look at Flacko Lagerfield. Needing no introduction, the former first overall pick and captain of the Falcons was on full display tonight. Leadership can be found in many facets on and off the ice but, many will say leading by example is the best way to do it. Lagerfield did just that tonight. Helping his team to an early 2-0 lead with his 3rd goal of the season, along with 3 shots and 2 hits over the full 60. Lagerfield in his third season in the SMJHL and team captain will be expected to be the team’s workhorse in even strength and special team’s situations. Lagerfield logged an impressive 22:17 minutes of ice time which saw him on the power play for a whopping 5:12 minutes along with 1:37 of the penalty kill time.  Congratulations to Flacko Lagerfield for his workhorse of the game award.

Mack Truck of the Game: (LW) Rafe Ulrich –  Militia

G  A  P  +/- PIM S  H  SB GA TA FO     MP     PP MP  PK MP
------------------------------------------------------------------------
0  0  0   1     2   6  4    0   0  0  1/4     19:44   2:07   4:24

This award doesn’t need much explanation folks. The Mac Truck of the game is a player who is going out there and throwing his weight. This player excels at putting the body to others and making every single player on the ice think about them when they’re out there. This was clearly Rafe Ulrich tonight without question. There were a few out there mixing it up and throwing the body but, not only did Ulrich throw the body he also had an impressive night all over the ice. With 4 devastating hits to his name accompanied by 6 shots and 19:44 of ice time 6:31 spent split on the PP and PK this man was everywhere. As we see power forwards become rarer in the modern J and SHL, Rafe Ulrich is truly the perfect mold. A big bodied, above average skating and strong defensive game this is a hard hitting, bone breaking, penalty killing forward that many teams wish they could have. It is all these reasons that set apart our Mack Truck of the game.

Game 30: Montreal Militia vs. Detroit Falcons
Militia 2-3  Falcons  Regulation Win

Rookie of the Game: Cedric Robinson

Its not often that we get to see a Rookie of the Game be a goalie, but Detroit Falcon's Cedric Robinson had a fantastic game tonight. Robinson had 21 shots fired at him, which is 6 less than what his team shot. Robinson saved 19 of those 21 shots, good for a .905 save percentage which is just outstanding for a rookie goalie. Compare that to his opponents .899 save percentage and we can see why Detroit managed to best Motreal.

Tonight's: Was it really just a 2-min?
We look into the one of the fastest penalties so far. Rafe Ulrich trip Falcon player just 15 seconds into the game.
We also look into Marc Palicka's viscous slashing.

First situation
[Image: F0cwauG.gif]

Rafe Ulrich has been featured on was it really just a 2-min before, this time he's at it again. In an intense skate battle with a Falcons forward he seemingly loses the battle for the puck and decides to whack his opponent over the calf.
The Detroit player falls over in spectacular fashion, no doubt to make sure the ref notices. This phenomenon has been more common in hockey recently. Something that most spectators think is a shame.

The slashing might look like it's more dangerous then it actually is due to this, but this is a pretty standard minor penalty. The referee got it right here.

Second situation
[Image: ezgif-3-4993499cd6.gif]

12:14 into the second period, rookie wonder kid Marc Palicka seems to have a brain freeze for a moment as Militia player easily deke's him.
Seeing as he's unable to stop him he decides to slash him very hard over his thigh. This results in the Militia player falling and having a hard time getting up on his own.

This is a tough penalty to call as you can see the intent of the slash from miles away, Palicka even winds his stick for a moment before bringing it down on his opponent.
The swing resembles a sword swing and if his stick was a bit sharper he might have taken the leg of his opponent. Not something you'd want in your trophy cabinet, maybe if Palicka was a knight in the olden days.

As so I believe this could easily been a major or even game misconduct. The force of the slash is very hard and the Militia player is lucky he could skate on.
The referee made an OK call but could just as easily have gone for the harder punishment here.

Three comments:
There were a lot of stick penalties in today's game, as both team struggled to stop their opponents legally.

These teams has to shape up and stay out of the box if they wanna be a contender for the cup this year.

Once again we are lucky that the players did not get hurt during any of these events, especially the latter.

THE CRUCIBLE: Analysis of Physical Play

Hit of the Game: 0:34 of 3rd period - Vital Kravtsov is hit by Hippo Passamus

With both teams looking to kick off the final period by gaining some momentum, Passamus began his shift ready to pounce on a loose puck off of a faceoff. Instead, he saw the centremen tied up in the faceoff dot, and decided to pounce on that. Using his short centre of gravity, he bowled into Montreal's Vital Kravtsov and sent him briefly flying into the air. Kravtsov, having been tied up with Falcons pivot Marc Palicka, was unprepared for the hit and would end up trying to get back in the play for the remainder of the shift, which allowed some sustained pressure for Detroit until an offside fumble at the blueline.

Big Richard's Auto Collision Hitters of the Game:

3. Hypolact Asia, 2 hits
2. Pavel Pivonka, 3 hits
1. Rafe Ulrich, 4 hits

Missed Opportunities: The Turning Points That Never Happened

In this weekly segment, we explore the moment(s) in this week's featured game where a team or player blew an opportunity to make their mark on the game and either win it or at least turn it in their favour. In this week's game between the Montreal Militia and Detroit Falcons, the greatest missed opportunity was:

Rafe Ulrich's Unlucky Break:

Immediately after Eero Makinen gave Detroit a commanding two goal lead, Montreal's Rafe Ulrich tried to take matters into his own hands. After forcing Falcons goaltender Cedric Robinson to make a highlight reel save on a chance in front of the net, Ulrich continued circling, only to have the puck return to him - only this time, Robinson was trapped due to a scrum on the other side of the crease. As Ulrich released his shot at a yawning cage, the puck stood on end, making it sail just over the crossbar and killing what would have been a massive shift in momentum. With the Militia scoring a late goal to make it 3-2, you have to wonder what may have happened if the puck hadn't rolled at the worst possible time.

Comment 3 (word count: 125):

Young gun moment of the night:

At 9:02 of the third period, recent signing Eero Makinen teamed up with veterans Papa Huligans and Pingy Pingu to score his first career SMJHL goal. After Makinen began the shift by winning a faceoff in his defensive end, the Falcons advanced the puck up the ice. Pingu was able to evade checks in the neutral and offensive zones before being cornered and slipping the puck through to Huligans, who made a deft touch pass to Makinen, who was unattended in the slot. His one-timer beat Militia goalie Petr Vrana low to the stick side and gave the Falcons a two goal lead. The goal would stand as the winner, capping off an emotional night for the rookie.

Goaltending Review:

Petr Vrana (Montreal): A solid performance in a loss, Vrana made 24 saves against the Falcons when his team struggled to get anything going for most of the game. The problem for Vrana came when he got beat on a goal in the first two minutes by star rookie defenseman Wolfhard Richter. The shot right off the faceoff is one that he would like to have back, but we expect Vrana to bounce back.

Cedric Robinson (Detroit): A good performance from the rookie goalie. Robinson made 19 saves and held the Militia to just 2 goals over the course of the game. He did a great job containing some of the star Militia rookies to few points in this tight battle of a game. Hopefully Robinson can continue to develop as he is one of the top young goalies in this year’s class.

Defensive Forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

A close game between the Militia and Falcons, with one player really shining through on the defensive side of the game and that's Detroit's Marc Palicka. His big claim to fame this game was his performance in the faceoff circle. He won 15 out of 21 draws throughout the game for an impressive 71% win rate at the dot. Palicka couples his faceoff win rate with one hit and one shot block through 17 minutes and 21 seconds. Despite ending the game with a -1 +/-, his defensive play was a big factor in the Falcons 3-2 win over the Militia.

SSPN Missed Opportunity of the Game

14:41, third period: Justin Siddals gets angry, receives a matching minor

It's easy to lose control of your emotions on the ice, but that discipline is what makes a good hockey player into a great one.  Tonight, we saw the opposite of a display of discipline as Justin Siddals lost his freakin' mind on Kevin Kazarian.  Kazarian starts winding up for a slapshot at the point, as a defending Siddals comes up to stick check.  Kazarian's stick comes up a little high and catches Siddals in the chin.  Now, we'll never know if Siddals saw the referee's arm go up, but we do now that Siddals hooked the holy hell out of Kazarian while sharing some choice words as play returned up the ice.  If Siddals had been a little more controlled, the Falcons could have extended their lead to four.  But instead, we're talking about him here.

As we always say...

He's gotta want that one back!

Cheers Bitter Beer Award of the Game Cheers

Vital Kravtsov Militia (-2, 4/15 for faceoffs)
In a 3-2 loss, you would think there would be some light shed somewhere in the analysis of the game, unfortunately not here. On the ice for both goals against, Kravtsov struggled on the ice and most importantly, in the faceoff circle. Going 4/15 isn't what is expected of it's center, but believe it or not it wasn't the worst on the team (Pivonka went 1/12). As the second line center, more is to be expected and Kravtsov must step to the dot ready to do his job.

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

Detroit took this game 3-2 and unsurprisingly, our Bust of the Game Award goes to one of the Militia - Radovan Hudec. In a game this close, Hudec's performance just wasn't enough. Being trusted with close to 20 minutes, Hudec wasn't up to the task and couldn't find twine, despite being trusted with plenty of power play minutes. Posting a -2, with 2 shots, there wasn't much to show for almost a third of the game played. Radovan knows he's better, and I'm willing to bet he bounces back from this, and has a monster game next week. Don't doubt this kid, he has was it takes - just didn't have enough tonight.

Punching Bag Of The Game
Cody Johnson

A smattering of teeth littered the Ice as Pingy Pingu laid a shoulder into the face of Cody Johansen in tonight's game. After a momentary lapse in game time to clean up the blood and teeth left on the ice, the game resumed. Cody made his way back out to the ice, but was rocked 5 times total by members of the Falcons. Johansen looked like a mess out there after the big hit, losing the puck three times. Can't be scared to play the puck, Cody, it's why you're making the big bucks now!

Goaltender breakdown:
Petr Vrana (MTL): 24 saves on 27 shots, .889 Save Percentage
1st period: 8 saves on 10 shots
2nd period: 11 saves on 11 shots
3rd period: 5 saves on 6 shots
Goalie grade: D

Cedric Robinson (DET): 19 saves on 21 shots, .905 Save Percentage
1st period: 8 saves on 8 shots
2nd period: 3 saves on 3 shots
3rd period: 8 saves on 10 shots
Goalie grade: B

Goalie of the game: Cedric Robinson
Robinson played a very solid game, keeping his team in it even though they were dominant the whole game. There was a scare at the end of the game where he almost blew it, but he was able to hold on to the lead as his team had no problem scoring on the other end.

Something off in Montreal

This rivalry between the Falcons and the Militia has cooled a little over the fast few seasons. But I'm sure it will heat back up soon just like always. Detroit came out swinging, scoring in the first two minutes on the power play after a sloppy tripping call on Ulrich. They would exit the period with a two goal lead. Jeff Brogen tried to rally Montreal early in the third narrowing the gap to one goal. It would not be enough as Detroit widened the gap yet again.

Detroit won 3-2 but the real story is the lack of discipline in this game. Montreal gave up six penalties making their PK init work extra hard. They managed to kill 5 of 6 so maybe they just like being short-handed.

Welcome back to the Shot Blocker of the Game award show with Obsidian311! Tonight's winner is Hypoclast Asia of the Detroit Falcons!

For the 2nd game in a row now we have a winning player getting this award. Asia was willing to put the body on the line in order to get the W. None more important than his block at 11:50 of the first period with the Falcons already carrying a 1-0 lead, Savage and Schieck of the Militia were in front poking away the the puck when Schieck pulled free from the pack and lasered one top shelf. Asia being in front trying to clear out bodies poked at his shoulder just in time to deflect the puck back down where Schieck put it lightly back on goal and into the goalies chest.

Blues' Goon of the Game

Now for a game that’s very close to my heart: the Detroit Falcons against the MONTREAL MILITIA. The Goon of the Game honours in this game belong to a player that got it done on both ends of the ice tonight, as we crown Rafe Ulrich with the Goon of the Game helmet! Rafe earned himself a hard two minutes in the box in this one, but tossed his body around with 4 hits. He also rifled 4 muffins on net and was able to pull a plus one rating out of his ass. Good on you, Rafe, you’re a certified goon!
