Nova puts league on notice, says he's the SHL's best player

The Supernova is here

If it hasn’t been obvious by last season's type of hot streak that hasn’t been seen since Jeff Dar more than three decades ago, or a regular season eruption that goes back to the seasonal magic of the wizard Riley "smashin hoes, scoring goals" Raycroft and Ideen Fallah, Nova's swag is now apparent.

Terrance Nova hustled off to the Minnesota Chiefs' team bus after another spectacular statistical performance that looked so routine. Nova made his way down a hallway towards the exit door where he caught his reflection and stopped... then stared at himself out of admiration, brushing himself off to make sure he looked ok, and strolled outside.

Chiefs coach has worked with great scorers and great playmakers at different points of time, but in Nova he found a forward who can do both. Nova has long dominated the puck as a facilitating shoot first forward, but the coach ended speculation about what he truly is by stamping him with the label as the 1C playmaker  in every line. Now that Nova is setting up teammates better than anyone else and came 2nd in assists last season, behind Jason Visser ( who had 6 other teammates over 45 points compared to Nova only having 1), who is the league’s best player at his position?

“Best center or best player?” Nova responded to the question with a question.

Either one.

“I am” Nova told the press.

The coach already unlocked the "Jay McDonald" in Noro Wozy through his partnership with Nova, which opened up the kind of mind-blowing production that compared to an unphased Jason Visser and an unleashed Louie Garrett last season. Nova, the deceptive, softhanded and flashy scorer who has turned the two way game into fine art, and Wozy, the finisher of the innovative offense in Minnesota,  serve as the blueprint to the high possession, high pace game, and have teamed up to make stat sheets look good, and it shouldn’t be all that surprising considering the workload and skill of the players involved.

Noro Wozy and Terrance Nova have been a natural tandem.

“I thrive on scoring, creating shots and openings for my teammates and myself,” Nova, averaging .96 P/20, with 60 points, 38 assists, +27 last season, told the press. “I go into every game doing what it takes to win, whether it’s assists, whether it’s scoring, faceoffs, whatever it is. My coach puts a lot of trust in me, and my teammates do as well.”

Nova was mostly overlooked after dropping a career-best statistical performance last season. That effort didn’t make a sound, muted by the sounds of disappointment and dissatisfaction. When the Chiefs followed up a trip to the quarter finals and got swept after easily making the playoffs with only 2 true top 6 defensemen and also failing to make any of the three SHL allstar teams or even a Dar nomination – despite being one of the top players in points (60), assists (38), +/- (+27), faceoffs (56.33% of 1619 taken) and even shots blocked as a forward (16)– Nova learned that nothing he does individually can remove the ugliness of the team's failures.

So, while he would join Flacko, Sarantez, Garbanzo and others as one of the elite and highly efficient Chiefs to ever play in the SHL– and could become the Chiefs leader in all time stats in scoring and assists – if he is somehow able keep up this intense pace for the rest of his regression, Nova said he still isn’t making it his priority to become a unique footnote in history.

“I just want to win. I want championships. I don’t really think about doing all that other stuff,” Nova told the press “Being runner-up for playoff MVP [in S39] and having just average seasons up to now after being eliminated by the Dragons the season after, it was good for me. It was a growth period for me. I learned a lot of things and got better and just had a different mentality going into last season”

In addition to trading for a player like Wozy to maximize the talents of Nova, which he calls his most important piece, Chiefs' general manager @Shmurph added Bobby Watson last offseason, surrounding Nova with the personnel that could enhance his ability to drive the net and finish or pass out when the defense collapses on him. “A lot more space. A lot more opportunity for me to get to the net, for me to find guys,” Nova said of his new system. “Previously, it was a little bit more crowded once Strange retired. You’ve got to respect our shooters and you’ve got to be able to find them and know where they are at all times, or you’re going to pay for it.”

Nova, shooting 13.58%, had multiple 3+ point games. The scoring could dip as Nova regresses, but coach said maintaining 30+ assists a season shouldn’t be a problem for Nova, even if they add another playmaker to his line. “I don’t see why not.”

But in order to be considered the best, Nova can’t make his presence felt on the physical side of the puck. His indifference toward checking has inspired its fair share of mocking memes, "soft" comments and exposing videos. Combined with Chiefs reputation for fielding teams that view checking as the necessary break between stick checking and positioning, the potential is there for Nova to become even more of a sieve – but teammate Jonathan Lundberg refuses to allow that to happen under his watch.

“As bad as people say Nova is physically, I know he can hit. He’s too athletic and big not to be able to,” Lundberg told the press. “So what I try to do is continue to stay on him, continue to push him, like, ‘Hey.’ I don’t care how mad he gets at me because it doesn’t matter. I’m not doing my job if I don’t let him know what he’s not doing. Physically, we try to hold each other accountable. He knows that. He really play on all ends of the ice. When we see he’s not doing what he’s supposed to do, us, as a group, we let him know.”

With the puck on his stick more, and playing an up-tempo offense, Nova has an easy excuse for not having the energy to have enough on physical play. But the coach believed the increased responsibilities on offense will spare him from getting worn down because “he starts off with the puck, he doesn’t have to wrestle and go get it.” Nova said the challenge would be more mental than the actual physical. “Just being locked in,” Nova said. “It’s my job to go out there and play a complete game at a high level. We’re all going to make mistakes, but we have each other’s backs and we compete. The 6'3, 210 lbs Houstonian finished off last season with 114 hits and only 22 PIMs.

After an offseason of self-analysis and transition before last season, Nova was out to be a better player, team MVP and wanted to challenge the top players of the SHL “He understands what he’s up against,” Odegard told press “It’s going to be tough for him, but the good thing about him is, he doesn’t want it to be easy. We’re here to assist and help him. And we want to see him be great. Because we see what he does everyday. We know how hard he works. We know he can reach his potential in this system.”

Thank you.  Any questions will be answered by Nova while he's still available, so ask away! Interview

What is the best burrito place nearby?

What's your opinion on the future of the Chiefs after this seasons draft?

Which prospect do you most look forward to playing with?

Can I touch you?

First off, I want to throw it out there that I love controversial players that come into the league with that kind of passion. Its amusing, yes, because most of it is just talk just for the sake of talking but the ones that can back it up with their play, I have respect for those guys. I don't know what happened between his team and him but the guy clearly has passion to make the SHL despite his reputation, they learn over time.

I haven't had a burrito in a long time but I did stop by to check out a taco truck last night, and they had some good looking burritos but I had already ordered Louisiana fried chicken from across the street. I didn't regret it.

I think even after this draft, we have work to do and holes to fill but we will be fine hopefully. We had to reset the window but we'll be back.

I'm really looking forward to playing with all the prospects, to name just one would be insulting because they've all been doing well in the juniors, waiting for their shot. They're all special and well be infusing some of them into our roster next season with extended roles, so it'll be interesting.

Go for it bb

Do you think rookie D-man Geoff Moore will have any sort of impact on the team? (Had to do it)

How happy are you that Wozy came back after suddenly disappearing for a while?

We have alot of work to do. It depends on our progression throughout next season and plugging in the holes. We need alot of help on defense but but I like to think we are a team that is used to surprising people.

Ofcourse he will. I mean, he will have to be impactful. Kid has elite talent and Chiefs need all the help they can get from the blueliner with the shallow depth they have on defense. Just having him called up and working out with the team is a sigh of relief.

I don't think Wozy ever left. I think he was just on vacation, I mean it is just offseason.. but I've known him for a long time now and it's always brings a smile on my face to see him around.
