Alexis Metzler- Thoughts on Free Agency and the Future.
#1

In season 38, Alexis Metzler signed a monstrous, 7 year, 44 million dollar deal to continue to play for the Buffalo Stampede far into the distant future. Seven years and two Stevens trophies later, he's again needing to consider his future. This isn't a team by team analysis, and you're not going to get one; this is me putting my thoughts out there about what I want in the future, and this post will apply to my decisions well beyond the end of season 45.

Alexis Metzler is going to continue to play until roughly the season 51, season 52 mark (20ish seasons total). He won't have a monster build at that point, but he shouldn't be a drain on the roster, either- I hope to still have 800ish TPE at that time, and when I had 800 TPE on the way up, I didn't suck then. Assuming he earns an average of 25 points a season from season 46 onwards, he should finish somewhere around the 700 point mark- good for a top 5 all time career as a defenseman (barring intervention from Dover, Weber or Schroder). With two Stevens trophies (and two more nominations), an array of All Star team titles, and the aforementioned points, his place in the Hall of Fame is probably a sure thing. This season will be the last season before I have to start picking and choosing what I want to shed TPE from (other than Checking). I had a slow start, but I've stormed back to being 5 points off the pace from the current top Defensemen, so I may get my 5th nomination yet. But after this season, personal glory is no longer expected.

There are three things I want. This is a problem, because all three of these things are arguably directly at odds with each other.

Firstly, in terms of real world sports, I'm a fan of two teams. The Minnesota Wild, and the Port Adelaide Power. People often ask me how the hell I wound up as a Wild fan living in Australia, and while it took me a while to synthesize a good reason beyond "I really liked their old 3rd jerseys", I have one now. His name is Zach Parise. He's a hell of a hard working player, still giving his all well beyond the point many others would have retired (and getting results, too). But more importantly- he's playing for his home town. He grew up in Minnesota, and his dad, J.P. Parise, among other accolades, was the captain of the Minnesota North Stars. You don't see that much in North American sports, but it's a big deal where I come from. In the AFL (Australian Football League), there's a father-son rule in the draft; if you're entering the draft as the son of an ex-player who played enough games for their club, that club gets first dibs on them (there's a bidding process, and the father's club always has the right to match any other team's bid with their next available draft pick to secure the player). Generations of families playing for their club matters here, and it would be unfathomable for Port Adelaide to trade away, for example, an Ebert son, because his dad played for the club, and his grand dad played for the club, and so on. Even the clubs that started in the 90s are getting use out of the father-son rule.

The point I'm trying to make isn't necessarily that I want to only ever play for the Buffalo Stampede when I'm on this site; but it is that I would consider it a big deal if Alexis Metzler played 20 seasons for Buffalo, and Buffalo only. If I get a Hall of Fame banner, I only want one team logo on it.

Secondly, I want a Challenge Cup. I've won IIHF Gold once or twice; I've got no further opportunity to win a 4 Star Cup- although I have in fact though about recreating underneath the same name at the end of my SHL career to spend 5 more seasons in the juniors as an old bastard. I think I have a reasonable shot at getting that cup in Buffalo; despite recent sim luck, WannabeFinn and Tomen are great GMs, and the team is very deep. However, should those GMs suddenly step down, or we lose several players, I may consider chasing after one.

Thirdly... there's no way around it. I'm bored. While I have several ideas about what I might do for a recreate, I am a competitive perfectionist- unless I thought I had the juice to reach 2000 TPE again, I probably wouldn't go through with it. I know for a fact, right now, that I don't have that juice; I don't attempt championship week or PTs, and I usually miss the other points tasks unless I'm prompted. If I thought there was a locker room out there right now that would re-ignite my fire, I'd strongly consider heading there.

Will I leave Buffalo this season? I don't think so, unless Joe picked me in the expansion draft. It's not right to choose this season to leave Buffalo at any rate- the expansion draft shafts their ability to get fair return for me. But in the future, I don't know, and that's why I wanted to lay everything out. Thanks for reading.

I don't think he can pick me- he'd have to pick his own player and that would count for his 1/1 from Buffalo.

That’s not how it works. Teams lose two players but they can be to the same expansion team. It’s not 1 to each.

Thinking I might challenge you is a honour in self. I'll be lucky to break 550 points before I'm done at the rate I'm going. Good on yah if you do stay there your entire career. Great run metzler has had. Wish I had even half your players individual successes.

I actually only just passed you for points in the last couple seasons- at the start of this season you had 465 points, and I had 488. I'm at 520 now, you're at 493. You've fought regression a lot better than me, so you could absolutely catch me again. Weber's in the same ballpark and Dover is about 80 points ahead of us both. Still shocked you've never won a Stevens yet. Tongue
