S46 PT #4 - Discord Commissioner

My first and only action for the foreseeable future would be moving the Thunderdome threads (read; now EVENTS) to Discord. I'd have specific channels in the official Discord used for the participation and listening to of whatever TDs were going on. To make sure they would be proper events you'd set dates and times in advance for the spectacle to make sure that as many people as possible could tune in - and not only that! In true trashy talkshow fashion you'd be able to join in! I mean, it's a VoIP channel, just throw your viewpoint in there! If we'd have the budget for it we might even include security guards if it gets too heated, just like the real deal.

When the dust settles there would be a Ref bot in the channel to settle who came out as the victor - I'm split on if it should determine it by measuring the highest dB input, or simply flip coins. The goal here would be to make sure that there is absolutely no connection to logic or sense in the conclusion, as is the tradition with the talk show TV counterpart.

I'm certain this would be an instant hit.

Oh thank god finally I've been given the powers to clean up the discord community, something that has been a plague with disgusting and despicable acts for far too long. The first thing I'd do is to create a dedicated weeb channel. Let's be honest weeb shit is terrible and if it's the first thing someone sees when they're considering the SHL they probably run for the hills....and if they're not someone considering the league they'll probably just dip out and mute the server. Keep that shit in the weeb channel. The next thing I'd do is strictly enforce communcation in the main channel. Now I like people talking and what not, but there comes a certain point when a conversation becomes off topic to the league and needs to be moved to another more relevant channel, but let's face most people who talk in the main discord really don't seem to know when they've crossed the line. This is unfortunate but again when people start to see a ton of off topic conversations about stuff they could care less about it usually turns them off and forget about the discord server. Basically we need to patrol it and maintain a great place for everyone.

I find that it is unfortunate that Discord has taken away the lr activity on the site. It is what it is however and since we're apparently stuck with it there are definitely things that need addressing. First of all there needs to be a code of conduct policy just as there is on the forum site. It has to be absolutely consistent, you can't tolerate behavior on Discord that you don't tolerate on the forums. I really feel a disciplinary committee is essential that has the power to monitor both parts of the SHL in an effort to keep things consistent. I also believe the league should "own" every team channel. If Discord is going to play a big part of the league we can't have rogue people having control over the server should they fall out of favor in the SHL. This would also help in the monitoring and maintaining of communication standards. This would also have to include the IIHF servers as well. And then try and set up a consistent set of channels for everything. You obviously need the teams to have some freedom but I've seen some pretty shady stuff in some of the discords that I wouldn't want some of the younger members on the site to have access to. So It's primarily about setting a consistent standard to be followed on both Discord and the League site that would be important to me.

It’s hard for me to make recommendations for a server I hardly use. I’ve never really dived into the ecosystem that is the SHL discord, mainly because I’m not a huge fan of large scale chat servers and partly due to the Pingy spam. It’s a fun meme, but maybe tone it down a bit. Here’s how I’d make changes if I were in control.

- Kill the PokeBot, or at least keep it segregated to set channels. It breaks up conversation more than I’m alright with.
- Automate the ‘role assign’ system or at the very least give certain active members perms to assign roles.
- Review the Mee6 bot and whether we need it in the server. Probably keep it if the masses want it. I don’t like it tbh.
- Actually populate the #rules channel. It’s pretty common sense what the rules are, but it’s nice to have something to point to when we need to ban problem individuals.

I could probably think of more, but this would be a good start. Ultimately the server will always be a supplement to the forums, but integration as a large scale project in some form could be something to look at in the future. No idea how that would look like, something to strive for perhaps.

If I were SHL commissioner of discord for just one day, I wouldn’t change a thing, because the SHL discord server is trash. There are too many people in one place, and there’s no organization to the conversation. Discussions aimed at large groups should be housed on the forums, because it’s an easier place to keep up with several people’s inputs. It’s different with smaller groups having conversations in team discord servers, where the pace is generally a bit quicker, but when you look at any of the offtopic channels on the SHL server you can see they would probably be better suited to forum use where long posts could be used to share larger explanations of your overall thoughts on a subject. The forums should remain the heart of the league, and having a general SHL discord server acts counter-intuitively to that. Leave the discord servers for team locker rooms, and try to drive the general conversations to the forums. Actually, if I were commish I would change something... I don’t want to say I’d shut down the SHL server, but I certainly would try to shift its purpose from general discourse to more of an informational hub.

I’m not a member of the SHL general discord, so I’ll be talking about the Manhattan Rage discord. As the team has gotten better and rebuilt, the discord has grown and grown. When I first joined the squad there were only a few messages every day, but now it is a bustling hub of activity. There are lots of channels, for people to post memes, play with some of the bots, discuss the team itself, or just shoot the shit in general. I think a lot of the success of a discord just has to do with the people on your team, so I’m not sure quite how much my changes would actually affect anything. One thing I might consider is just shrinking down the sheer number of channels - we have a ton, so it can be hard to try and keep up with everything. However it doesn’t matter what your discord has if there is no one there to use it. That is why I maintain that changing the discord can only do so much, and the real catalyst to increased locker room activity is just getting together a good core of people who want to talk and be active in a social way, rather than just building their player.

Well first rule, is to Ban Pingy, pretty sure that'll drive more users to the joke of the SHL Discord, as of now really nobody uses it other then brand new members and the same old existing members from the site. What we need to do is to the cut the channels size down, because the less channels the more appealing it'll be to the new users as it will more easier to navigate. The other team discords have these channels already for their team and by having it in the SHL Discord is pretty much useless as it is. So there should be only three channels. One of the General as the non-members will be able to talk in then. A New members channel for new members to introduce themselves to the existing members and get help from the mentors and members that use the SHL Discord after. And of course the last channels being for announcements that are SHL related in terms of the site and site content.

My first move would be to update the tags on users to reflect the current state of the league. A lot of users are sporting multiple tags or outdated team tags. \

My second move would be to create an announcement channel for all announcements and job postings pertaining to the league. Basically, anything that is posted in announcements on the site would also be posted in announcements on discord. The goal is to give this news as much exposure as possible and as fast as possible.

My third big move would be to get more discussions on issues and topics going on the discord channels as user response is much faster there than on the boards. Whether it be rule updates or suggestions, I believe that through faster communications, especially with HO things would get discussed and acted upon faster.

Lastly my fourth and final move would be to hire a few moderators to help keep the chats clean and friendly.

Today the SHL has gone all in by naming you the leagues first ever SHL Discord commissioner! with unlimited power over the whole league channel what would you do?? What ideas or changes would you consider? would you add any channels, bots or other discord friendly additions? would you make or modify any rules? what would some of your strategic plans be between discord and the SHL/SMJHL under your reign?... the floor is yours, feel free to dance! (must be 150 words or more)

I have a 5 steps plan to make discord great again. (Note: I do not consider my post a real constructive work but a satire)

-Less channels: Too much channel just lowers the interest of people to try and follow a conversation. I mean, is there anything more discouraging or disinteresting to login to 9 light up rooms with pages of old conversation? So only 1 channel where everything is easy to at least read the older stuff.

-More pingy bot. I anything better than pingy pingu spamming you with oogely boogely doo? Yes, a bot. The bot created by LukeTD just fulfills any need you would have for spam. You can pm him fortnite and he still answers to you in direct message 5 minutes after, isn't that the perfect loneliness cure?

-Trivia room challenge: I know I said less channels, but there is a need for a big trivia room where everyone can show off how inteligent they are or how fast they can vomit memorised answer on a keyboard. Bonus points if there is a monthly ranking.

-Emojis: Every rarepepe emoji should come with the SHL discord. I would make sure you can express ALL your emotions with a rarepepe. Sadness? easy. Rage? minty. The feeling you have when you find a 20$ bill in your spring vest you jsut brought out but when you tell your colleagues about it they say it's bullshit and you are just messing with them. Done.

-A pingy Pingu Rarepepe bot. Combining both my favorite things on discord would just be too much right? Wrong, it would simply be the best. I don,t know how it would work, but trust me, everyone would like it.

For these reasons, I should never be discord commish.

Oh man, what would I do as Commissioner of Discord? First, make Pingy my Deputy Commissioner. I feel like this should be done simply because he is Pingy and we all need a daily dose of that in our lives. I'd probably add a trivia bot, I like doing trivia. I'd add the bot in a separate games room. Pokemon is cool, but what about the people who don't like Pokemon? Overall though, seriously I don't use the discord much because it never seems like anything of substance is going on. I kinda just idle. In the locker rooms you've got close friendships and camaraderie though. What are the teams doing different that the league can harness and use in its own discord? Is it the spirit of activity? Or is it that the Locker Rooms just seem to bring out more confident discussions and open opinions. If that's the case, then as Commissioner I'd probably also add a thunderdome on the Discord.

Alright so the discord administrator position needs to be as big brother as possible. They should have access to the SHL main discord and all of the individual team discords as well. They should be able to suspend and permanently ban people at will with no reason necessary. The you said something the discord administrator disagrees with on a personal level, but didn't technically break any rules? Oh yeah, you can bet your sweet ass that that is going to result in a permaband. I think it is also really important that the person who gets this position has total control over the roles and permissions that everyone has in their own personal team discords. Only the administrator can post in announcements, spam filters shall be put in place, and you can bet that there will generally be a lot of restrictions put into place. Some might view this as authoritarian, but really its just cleaning up the mess that is SHL discord. This person must show no mercy in how their tear down the walls of this institution to create a more glorious and prosperous discord environment for the betterment of future generations of simulation hockey players online.

The problem with discord I believe it that it's so easy to get carried away with channels and servers. Yea, sure it's nice to have a niche area to speak but then you have so many different channels to look through if you want to stay up to date and along with that the more servers there are, the higher the likelihood of the chat drying up.

But if I was disc commish i would go full heel and just troll everyone. goldenglutes in our personal server made a bot which plays tunak tunak tun whenever I'm in the voice channel (worst thing ever, its so loud) and another one called flavourtown that posts a guy fieri quote whenever someone uses the word flavour. So I would just load up servers on super niche bots that range from funny to mildly inconveniencing to super annoying and enjoy the mess that results. would this bolster activity? not on discord, that's for sure. but, maybe this would drive people back to locker rooms so i guess activity would increase somewhere else.

I remember when I first joined the league around Season 25 a few years before the discord era popped up on the SHL. The Vancouver Whaler locker room on the website was a huge hub of activity where we racked up over 400 pages of content in that season alone. I miss those times and I know they are far gone now with most users enjoying the ease of access of Discord. To bring back website locker room activity to previous levels would be near impossible. I would organize my teams locker rooms with different threads with various information to both help new members out with building their players, have vast amounts of team history that is easily accessible to give members information to write articles about. While most locker rooms probably have something like this already, I am sure there are ways in order to expand upon that and clean things up.

As Discord commissioner, I would find a way to make the SHL discord more community based. In it's current state, I feel like the official SHL discord doesn't serve any real purpose. Also, I would explore the idea of centralizing all the individual team discords into the main one, with different private channels for each team. It's hard to keep track of all your separate discord servers, and having them in one central server would help a lot. The SHL on discord is too fragmented right now, and unifying it all into the main Discord server will also help provide more league-wide communication and discourse. Apart from that, I'm not sure what else I would implement. I'm not the biggest discord user, so I'm not aware of all its features. Maybe I'd try to funnel more activity to the forums. Right now, it seems like discord is more a replacement to discussion on the forums when it should be more of a complementary piece.

First things first, we set it up by the conferences groups, and then make extra special channels for every team, ranking them by how many championships they have. The Pingu bot and the Stat Scraper bot would be the first to join, we want the stats, we want the chaos, we will have exactly as we want. The 1st and most important rule is that we can not have anyone against the unity of the league, any one found to be critical of the league will be treated as treasonous and properly dealt with. We would force locker room inclusiveness, and ensure that each team has the proper league affiliated unbiased news source to tell them their daily activities. Then we build the private propaganda staffed center, no one is allowed to not be part of the server, if they try to dodge the SHL Discord, we hunt them down, we send enforcers against them on the ice, and forget to turn off injuries. Our rule is complete and will be obeyed. All hail Off, Supreme ruler of the Discord!
