There have many complaints about the activity of the SHL discord. I have no idea if it is active, I do not frequent it. Part of the issue is how large the server is. It can be effective at giving out news, such as when streams are going up, other leagues that actually stream sims do this quite well. But for discussion, the SHL discord is so large that it is hard to maintain a discussion. Perhaps an answer to this is having rooms which specific topics and having mods that cut back on how spammy these large servers can get. Having hockey discussion, SHL fantasy, sim discussions, etc, would likely make the discord more active, but it might drive down site activity. Therefore, I do not really recommend a shift to discord for topics that are currently discussed on the site. The team discords do a good job at allowing a discord like conversation about SHL and related topics

So I just joined the discord so I could do this PT.

The first thing I would say is to clean up the channels. I see a lot of random channels all mushed together. I think it would be smart to make a "league" category and "off-topic" category so users can sift through stuff easier.

Secondly I think that the discord is unofficial is silly. Like, its not like there is a lot of discords trying to be the SHL one. There's no harm in having an SHL official discord. One positive of it is that discord is a lot easier to navigate on your phone. Not everyone can always be on their computer, so this is a real positive to have for any users that find themselves on mobile often.

Lastly, one thing that would be helpful is an announcements tab or a job postings tab. That would be using discord to really help out on the site

The discord channel is so messy and overwhelming with all of the sub channels. A lot of people that use discord here use it for SHL and nothing else, so they are quite new to the app (myself included). When we see all of these different channels it can be quite overwhelming. Most of them don't have any activity in them at all such as "pets", food, gaming, music to name a few. I'd get rid of these sub channels and just have one channel for everything. Next I'd make sure we push our channel to new members joining the site. Many of the new members hear about their team discord when they get drafted, but I don't think they really know about the main SHL channel. Other than this, I think it's in quite a good state, I wouldn't want to take activity away from the forums, so I wouldn't hold any special events or give out TPE/money for using discord. Most discussion is always going to be in team discords, as teams form bonds and are more comfortable talking to each other.

First task as the new Discord Commissioner would be to unban all the SHL Members like McZ for example imo no one should be refused access to the SHL general server. I would even allow previously banned users like gorlab in the discord just so we can gauge if it is even worth unbanning them on the site. I would probably scratch some channels or rather summarize them into 1 or 2 channels. Smash-Bruhs for example should be just in gaming. The emoji's channel can also just be deleted. Other than that I think the discord channel already has enough channels and would not add any more to it. I would finally change the Mee6 level up message that I made 2 years ago to something not related to cash me outside. I would open up 3 jobs whose responsibility would be to update permissions as soon as someone sees it. Maybe setting up a channel called permissions should be implemented so that we can have everything up to date way waster.

As the Discord Commissioner I would like to clean up all the channels. There are way too many channels that have little to no activity. Get rid of them first. Next thing on the list is to clear inactive players from the list. No need to have all these people there that do not communicate in the first place. Now, something new I would add: Box Score Channel. Every day it could be updated with the current sim games for both SHL and SMJHL. Imagine if you could get an update every day of what happen during the games that day. Maybe you don't have access to the site at the moment but can get on discord via phone. Each game's box score of goals, shots, and hits with also special notes for each game. I.G.: So and so recorded a hat trick or so and so removed from game. It might be hard to do, but would be really cool to see. That would be my first steps.

First thing's first, I'd cut down on the number on the channel in there. They don't or barely get used so it's pointless them being there. I'd also stop all the spamming in there, or at the very least move it to it's own channel.

That'd leave the channels: "general, SHL, SMJHL, IIHF, WJC, irl_sports, and the dev channel because that's quite active." I'd categorise them so they look nice and generally present nicer to new members of the SHL.

I'd also... add pingybot. He would be in his own quarantined channel that you have to request to join, so that nobody has to experience it who doesn't want to.

I'd also attempt to condense some of other servers somewhat, if my juristiction went that far, so that people wouldn't have to join so many servers. An example of this would be merging the SHL/SMJHL GMs server, with roles restricting people not being able to see the other side of the league.

Finally I'd add an auto-role assignment bot, so people can be their team's colour without having to ask anyone.

well, until this pt came out i was completely oblivious to the fact that the league even had an SHL discord. i mean... it makes sense, you guys have a discord for friggin everything. but uhh, why the hell you putting ME in charge? i’m absolutely terrible at using things to their full potential. as far as im concerned there could be one channel for everyone to talk in and we’d be good to go. bots? special emojis? nah i think you’re gonna have to find someone else to set that stuff up. no but really, after joining the discord and checking it out, things look pretty decent. maybe i would get rid of a few of the unused channels and group the alike channels together a little better but other than that i can’t see any reason to do much more with it. seems to be active enough so just let it roll!

I personally wouldn't be a good fit for a commissioner role. I am not a creative person so would not be good at thinking of ideas to create a better experience for people, I'm more of the kind of person to give feedback on ideas. I also don't really interact in the SHL discord whatsoever, so I can't comment too much on it. I'd get rid of the excess channels and cut it down to just a few sub-channels. But I do love the separate team discord channels. I don't really understand people that crap on them and prefer the website locker rooms. Discord locker room is really the exact same thing modernized to be more accessible at any time. Although it's a slight decrease to overall forum activity, I think it's an overall benefit to the league to have such active discord locker rooms and I think it keeps users sticking around.

Wow what a tremendous honour. As we all know Discord is already an invaluable communication tool. For the most part, Simulation Hockey League players, coaches, and management are already gathering on Discord to both strategize and socialize. So, considering we must all like Discord as it is, I would not one to change up too much in risk of ruining the culture we are developing. That being said, if we are going to be relying on this tool so much, we may as well also improve on it. As a somewhat new member of the Simulation Hockey League, I often have difficulty matching usernames to their SHL / SMJHL player. As a result, I would mandate that everyone puts their player's name in their username, eg: Red94 (LW Jack Kennedy). I know many people already do this, so I do not believe this would be too much of a shake up. Another addition I would find try to make happen. Although, it would be harder. But I'd like to have the stats available somewhere on the app. This would just be nice to minimize flipping back and forth between tabs.

If you're a commissioner of something, the first thing you want to do is make yourself more powerful. I would try and move key site features to discord so they would fall under my umbrella of authority and I could eventually become the most powerful user on the site. I'd first try and make it so bank transactions went through the discord. Whether that's getting someone smarter than me to build a bot or having the bankers migrate to a discord channel, I'd have to find a way to control the sites money (money is power). All announcements would have locked threads with a link to the discord for discussion. Anything that can be discussed on discord will be discussed on discord. I'd make a Thunderdome in the discord to drive even further activity away from the site. Finally, I'd make it a rule that everyone has to post funny pictures that we can all laugh at together and everyone will become really good friends because we're all laughing at the funny pictures. The end.

The first thing that needs to be done to make the SHL Discord a better place is to get all the admins and people with perms to chill the fuck out and realise it's just an internet forum. It doesn't need to be wildly moderated and people having fun (the sole reason for why we're here) shouldn't be threatened with bans for noot nooting.

Secondly, and this has been said a lot which rings to how true it is - too many channels. Let's calm down and streamline them.

You could even combine rules and help if you really needed to, but that is definitely a start. Player names should be in nicknames, team roles should be assigned properly, because there are FAR too many unassigned users in the discord. Most importantly, draft up some actual rules for the discord. That way people know how far they can take things banter wise, this way we can avoid stupid warning situations and vague two point rules.

I never really use the league discord so I am not really sure how active it really is, I stick mostly to the team locker rooms so I don't know the state the SHL discord is in. If I was named as Discord Commish I would add a couple bots that can read you your SHL/SMJHL stats, also an auto mod bot and add some events to keep the SHL discord more active. Perhaps some community games or events which you can may be gain 1 or 2 capped tpe if you win such as a cards against humanity challenge or a jackbox challenge where the winner gets 2 TPE and runner up gets 1 tpe. And I think that may keep the Discord more active, and also the amount of channels are a bit excessive so i would limit the amount of channels to get rid of clutter and makes the discord a bit cleaner and more visually appealing.

I’m not in the SHL discord, so I can't really say what is working or need to be changed. I'll talk about my experience in teams discord as I've been in 4 of them. First of all, if I was an owner, I wouldn’t want the current players and alumni share a channel where lines/roster moves are talk about. All the infos I could report to my current team is quite alarming, GMs need to be more careful. The pokemon bot would die under my watch, there’s place for only one bot and it's the pingy one. I would also try to bolst the activity level by trying to get members to play more PC/Xbox/PS4 games. Too many dead gaming channels in my experience and what better way to build something by doing things outside the league. The lack of NHL 19 or EHM talk is mind boggling for me as we're in a hockey sim league. Finally, fuck the memes channel

I think right now, the SHL Discord is a mess. I feel like it needs to be re-vamped, so just delete the thing all together and start it over. Give it general sections like General, Off-Topic, Hockey, Thunderdome, PT section, etc. I do not think it's the hardest thing to figure out at the moment, if you look at other Discords like some of the SMJHL ones I'm in, or the Calgary Dragons one I've been in for a long time. Even make a section for pet posting, and of course Video Games, SHL and SMJHL general sections, and more. The Thunderdome is where there are for the most part, no rules, although obviously no attacking members or doxxing. Meme pages as well.

Tag members when a PT is posted, tag members the day it's due, tag members when games are posted in the Games section, etc. Maybe a little Player of the Week post where you tag the member in a PotW section to recognize him/her.
