WFT's: Make the Case (S47)
#31

Code:
The St. Louis Scarecrows have officialy moved passed the Kelowna Knights as the best SMJHL team of the S40's.

I'mma hit this with one of both

For: Results don't lie, and the Scarecrows got results. That team was pretty strong in S44 and S45 with a generational goalie and good players and all that. With recency bias they achieved just as much as the Knights and could overtake them with another big win this season.

Against: They were super duper lucky to win last year with a not capped goalie against Kelowna's deep as hell roster, and really need the 4th win to "cement" that legacy. Whenever I do the Draftee Showcases Kelowna always provides tons of depth to them. Guys like Barry Batsbak, Bobby Sharp, Dick Clapper, Guy Zheng, Karlstrabe Scholz........... that roster was something else and deserved a cup in S46. They had a capped goalie and a promising backup behind as well(and now the promising backup is the starter and has capped). Of course now Sorokin has capped for the Scarecrows, but to a man the Knights had the better team in S46 and just got fed the poisoned Simon Tea.

Quote:Recent trades have pushed the Los Angeles Panthers out of post season aspirations until S51.

FOR

While they have gained some solid rookies through these trades, the LAP are in a spot of trouble. Having given away franchise legends, they now enter the hard rebuilding stage and are going to take several seasons to come out of it.  Rookies take a while to develop and they will need to have them develop together and find the right matchups in order to see post season success any time soon

For: Calgary's Otis B. Driftwood could do the unthinkable and win the scoring title as a defenseman.

With such a young roster behind the top line, the Dragons are relying heavily on their top players to give the consistent offense that has driven their results on the season. With Jones and Izzy finding the back of the net on a consistent basis, there is no doubt that Driftwood feeding them apples is going to continue.

It's not out of the realm of possibility and while it will be tough with how Visser is playing on a weak Jets roster, gobbling up all their offense, Otis B Driftwood is on a ridiculous pace for a defenseman and I think he can keep it up. He's been driving the offense all season for the Dragons, he plays at an 0-2-3 and I won't be changing his strats unless we start taking a lot of L's, even then I think the sim is liking his player enough to keep favoring him. He's on pace for like 67 points right now. The last defenseman I remember doing anything like that was Bubba Nuck when he won the MVP with 61 points. So it's possible. Visser will probably need to pull a groin though.

For: The SMJHL has it right with their cap at 350 TPE

I think it’s the perfect amount to keep the minor league competitive. It’s a perfect simulation of the level of players in the AHL compared to NHL, and in the real world if anyone was “above 350 TPE” (basically better than everyone else in the AHL), they’d be called up to the NHL. Without call ups in this league, this is a good cap for the players who are waiting for their chance to play in the SHL.

Against - For the Pride to be removed from the playoffs that means either Minnesota, Winnipeg or LA would need to surpass them. The last two are amidst what appears to be a rebuild/retooling so I doubt they leap over San Fran. The Minnesota Chiefs certainly have the players to do so, but they've struggled mightily this season. I think the Pride should secure a wild card seed come the end of the regular season.

For. The vibe in San Francisco is different than other years. No longer are they content with just developing their players. Big roles are expected to be filled, and the young core of the team is stepping up and helping to develop them into a competitive team who is able to win games

The league has grown exponentially recently and the need for people to stay in the minors an extra season or two is a reality.  If someone hits the cap and has to bank all TPE for an entire season or two, that can cause people to disengage and lead to people going inactive.

I agree with your reasoning, disagree with the conclusion. Not enough spots means we should continue expanding and, to account for the increase in talent gap, lower the cap or raise minimum cap hits per TPE amount

The SMJHL has it right with the 350 TPE cap.

For: This is the junior league after all and speaking from experience it took two seasons for me to max out (without doing jobs) to reach 350 TPE. If a player is truly committed to the SHL/SMJHL they can max out sooner and begin banking a lot more points for when they inevitably get called up and can unload their TPE so they can have an impact up in the SHL.

For:

I think the 350 cap is a great threshold for players in the smjhl. At that point it allows new players especially new users to contribute for their SMJHL team. There was a post earlier saying how rookies and 500 TPes would not be fair and I completely agree

With the additions of Artemi Berezin and Sophia Bennett the best team in the SHL is now.. the West Kendall Platoon

Against:
I don't think you can claim a team is the best in the league until they are lifting a cup above their heads. Stacking your roster doesn't mean anything unless you can actually secure that cup.

While I would certainly like to say it’s going to happen, I don’t actually believe it. Visser is on an incredible pace. He’s been one of the best players in this league for a long time and has always had the scoring knack. Driftwood as a pass first defenseman is at a natural disadvantage. Maybe if our offense was really humming at Blizzard or Platoon standards, I’d stand a chance. As it is I’d be very happy to lead defensemen in scoring and maybe finish in the top five overall.

In my opinion more used TPE between a newbie and a 2-4 season send down would drop the activity and interest of the newbies and the risk would be very high that they leave.

What we see here is that West Kendall made a nice jump from 7 to 3 after Gordie's last comparison (S46 comparison)

Two teams are still considered to be better, which are Buffalo and New Orleans. None of West Kendall lines is considered to be the best, although they got depth with their 3rd line being 2nd overall.

What also is remarkable is the fact that the team severely lacks some grit, i.e. checking. The only thing West Kendall really excels in compared to the other teams is skating, so no i wouldn't say they are the best team now, but they made good strides.

Now this is a very good and interesting question, I think you hit the nail right on the head with this one, very much so I agree with your work here

By S49 the Chicago Syndicate will climb past New Orleans as the better expansion franchise. - AGAINST

The SHL is about putting the best possible team on the ice and New Orleans did a great job through the expansion of draft of doing that, and Chicago did not. To think that in two seasons they will be better is crazy to think.

Currently boasting a .571 winning pct.. The San Fransisco Pride will not make the playoffs.

This is some BS I'm sick and tired of these guys getting called out for having this .571 record, when is it going to end? This is a playoff team no doubt, such bs to even bring this to light
