WFT's: Make the Case (S47)
#61

Code:
By S49 the Chicago Syndicate will climb past New Orleans as the better expansion franchise.
Bs: New Orleans has already been to a finals. Chicago's best player is in his later years, and while they have a rather young core of players none of them are ready to take up Atmey's mantle in the next two seasons. Chicago are a long term project and I doubt they suddenly get good without acquiring high end talent which won't match their timeline.

Quote:The St. Louis Scarecrows have officialy moved passed the Kelowna Knights as the best SMJHL team of the S40's.

For. Through incredible drafting and legendary coaching and GM abilities, they have surpassed Kelowna. Four Cup star winner for the last 3 seasons, they are well on their way to a 4 cups dynasty this season.

The SMJHL has it right with the 350 TPE cap.

Against. Because top-level players (including inactives) in the SHL are able to stay at their peak for so long, send-downs have to wait longer to get called up into bottom line positions. A lot of the decent TPE earners in the SMJHL hit the 350 cap in the 2nd season, so their player progression halts for several seasons until they have enough to serve as a 3rd or 4th line player in the SHL and have their player make actual progression again.

Suggestions:

1. Raise the SMJHL TPE cap:
1.A. progressively at a set rate per season in SMJHL (e.g. 40 TPE cap raise per season. Sample cap progression: 390, 430, 470, 510), or
1.B. to a set cap for all seasons and players (e.g. 500).

2. Make high TPE, and thus top-line positions, harder to keep by:
2.A. increasing regression earlier so top-TPE longevity is harder to obtain, or
2.B. punishing inactives with high TPE more by:
2.B(1) hitting inactives with higher regression than actives (e.g. keep normal regression rates, but add multiplier, say 2.5x, that linearly scales down to 1x from 0 TPE earned to 16 TPE earned (approximate total TPE earned for all activity checks in 1 season) so the less you keep up with your player, if at all, the more the player regresses, called the "no-practice" tax or something), or
2.B(2) start regression earlier for inactives, or
2.B(3) forcing early retirement after several seasons of inactivity (suggested by @SpartanGibbles), or
2.B(4) any combination of the above.

By S49 the Chicago Syndicate will climb past New Orleans as the better expansion franchise.

For.

Chicago is a hungry team with loads of young and talented players in the roster already and even more in the system. If New Orleans would be something sold in the store, it would have -30% off the price sticker on it, looks nice still, but unlike Chicago - New Orleans is close to the expiration day, when that day arrives, willing to bet the core is going to ask out, which only opens the door even wider for Chicago to take the number one expansion team title.

For The Hamilton Steelhawks 7-13 start should not come as a shock.

For: everyone knows that the Steel Hawks suck. Their strategy of drafting all Whalers has failed them once again as we all know the Whalers suck and this scouting department has no approach beyond drafting Van

AGAINST

New Orleans may have went with a win now attitude in the expansion draft but the additions of a few young free agents and a good crop of prospects coming up at just the right time, should make them deadly for many many seasons. Not saying Chicago has a bad prospect pool or anything like that, I just feel like NOLA's young players will step up to the plate to carry the team.

Recent trades have pushed the Los Angeles Panthers out of post season aspirations until S51.

Not at all. The Panthers still have a lot of quality SHL talent on the roster and now feature one of the best prospect systems in the entire SHL. While winning a championship will be a tall task for the next few seasons, I have little doubt that the Panthers will remain competitive and be involved in the postseason.

Fir: thing about wkp being best

West Kendall is the best team guys. These two acquisitions put us back on top of the east. Many articles showed that if we just had any goalie other than me we would have killed it last season. Folks we been to the finals 4 times, won it twice. Now we in a 8 game streak of winning cruising over the West side. As muh man Aaron Burr said, "I'm willing to W8 for it"

The St. Louis Scarecrows are the face of the SMJHL through the entire S40's. They have had some of the best talent in the shl play on their team and have a great discord environment while the Knights have began to fall off talent wise.

The Crows are winners of the past three 4 Star Cups and are in great position to make history by winning a fourth straight championship. St. Louis has dominated as of late, winning 11 straight games and 15 of their last 16 games. During the S40’s, the Crows have a regular season record of 213-128-34 and have had one of the most, if not the most lethal offenses in recent memory. During that same time span, the Knights have a regular season record of 212-135-28.

Allow me to sound old as fuck and just argue that it's been working well thus far. Being capped by the end of your first season as a top earner seems right to me.

I think people forget the surge of young FAs that signed there after the expansion draft

With the additions of Artemi Berezin and Sophia Bennett the best team in the SHL is now.. the West Kendall Platoon

FOR: Two world class players joining an already stacked squad for sure make this the team to beat right now in the SHL. While they did give up a hell of a good prospect in Tony Ford, Bennett is a lights out player and Berezin adds the grit and scoring the Platoon need.

AGAINST - The SMJHL has it right with the 350 TPE cap.

So, in the SMJHL, I agree with a cap. However, most people hit the cap by start of 2nd season, and most people don't get called up until 3rd or 4th season, so it'd be nice to improve for a while. It would also give players a longer progression curve, but would obviously suck a bit more for rookies. But even if we don't lift the cap for SMJHL, you should allow SMJHL players who are on the IIHF teams to utilize their full TPE in IIHF games and not be stuck to capped build only.
