The SMJHL Entry Draft is only a sheer less than two hours away, which can cause a great deal of anxiety and nerves for those about to find out their future SMJHL home. Cody, the mad man behind All Elite Wrestling is no exception to this rule and has decided that in order to distract himself from his pending selection soon to offer a theme song used by a wrestler to each SMJHL team. The connections being made here can stem from a variety of things, including but not limited to: the name of the team, the overall moniker/theme the team is going for, and perhaps even something far more abstract than that. Either way, Cody gave each and every team a great deal of thought, even if some matches came far easier compared to others (attaching animals to wrestlers was a lot harder than I initially thought it might be). Without further delay, here are the wrestling themes I have finalized as matches to all of the current and active teams of the SMJHL.

Anaheim Outlaws: This one turned out to be fairly easy and was actually the very first theme that came to my head when this entire idea came to mind. Given the Western theme and feel that the Outlaws branding has, the obvious match was none other than fellow Elite member, “Hangman” Adam Page’s theme music. Page’s theme and gimmick is strictly entrenched in the Western theme that the Outlaws possess and I happen to personally think that it’s also a bad-ass tune in its own right.

Anchorage Armada: This one was much tougher than the Outlaws, as there aren’t a ton of themes that are associated with boats, and to a less obvious degree, either sailors or pirates. Nevertheless, I kept thinking and it finally dawned upon me. There is a certain wrestler who has gained a cult following on Twitter and Reddit and actually aligns with the actual boat theme of the Aramada. This, of course, is none other than Tugboat, a wrestler who worked in what was then the WWF in the latte 1980s through to early 1990s. There isn’t much to add except that his gimmick was being a sailor and his wrestling name was a type of shit. Given the limited options, I felt this best suited the Armada’s gimmick and theme.

Colorado Raptors: This also was one that took a deep amount of thought on, as not many wrestlers have a theme related to dinosaurs or the Jurassic period in general. However, I drew inspiration from the first ever AEW event (Double or Nothing) which occurred not too long ago and figured out the best fit possible. In fact, this wrestler and his unique gimmick opened up a lot of eyes that evening. I am, of course, referring to Luchasaurus, who while may not be a raptor is nonetheless representing some sort of dinosaur theme and gimmick, which connects well to the Colorado Raptors’ current theme in a very acceptable way. The Raptors’ moniker made things a bit tricky, but I think this is the right and coolest fit possible.

Detroit Falcons: I didn’t want to go with a bird theme (considering there aren’t really many in the wrestling world), so I went with something that are associated with birds. That above anything else is flying, and there are many words that are at least somewhat synonymous with the term. “Elevated” not only can be considered one of those words in the proper context, but it’s also one of my favorite themes right now in wrestling, period. Moreover, Will Ospreay’s wrestling style is that of a fucking bird, as he’s arguably the best high-flyer in the business today. For all those reasons and more, I felt this was both the coolest and most appropriate theme music selection for the Falcons.

Halifax Raiders: This one was quite easy for me to figure out and I actually showed it to the Raiders’ General Manager, who thought it fit pretty well with their team, as well. The War Raiders of WWE (no I won’t refer to them by their stupid changed name on the main roster) not only possess the name “Raiders” in their own name and their theme fits the new Raiders logo, but the song is absolutely bad-ass and I think hypes up any players who would hear it before skating on the ice. In sum, this was one of the easiest themes to match with a SMJHL team and I think everything collectively mentioned earlier makes this one of the most ideal matches on the entire list.

Kelowna Knights: This was another tricky match to pull off, as not many wrestlers have a knights theme or anything similar to that off the top of my head. Therefore, I opted to connect what Knights do or how they behave to find the appropriate match. After some thought, I realized that most knights acted chivalrous, and that’s when it dawned upon me. Triple H (officially Hunter Hearst Helmsley) originally had a chivalrously acting figure as his gimmick and his theme has a very regal and “Knight” sort of feel to I’d argue. There wasn’t many great options to choose from, but if we’re going to go based off how a knight acts this seems like a good fit, not to mention it was the theme of someone who would develop into one of the best wrestling heels in wrestling history.

Lethbridge Lions: Another somewhat difficult one, as not many wrestlers choose animal themes in general, as mentioned earlier in the article. This took some creative thinking, but ultimately, I landed in Japan, and New Japan Prop Wrestling specifically, who label their own recruits in their wrestling dojo as “young lions.” The theme that all young lions use sort of symbolizes the young energy they have and wish to show, and who is to say that the lion within the Lehtbridge name can’t be recognized as representing a young and hungry lion? Ultimately, I’m relying more so on the term lion being used here and the nature of a younger lion being accurately portrayed within the theme itself. Besides, young lions end up being bad-asses most of the time and can become the top names of NJPW (just see Okada), just like the lion is notoriously referred to as the top predator and king of the jungle.

Montreal Militia: The term “militia” can be viewed either concretely or abstractly, which made this both a bit difficult, but also gave me a bit of flexibility. A militia in some ways can be considered a mini-sized army that’s formulated from a civil population. One of the factions in New Japan Pro Wrestling shares not only the name “army” in their faction’s name but also acts like a militia in beating the crap out of anyone they deem needs to be attacked. This, of course, is Suzuki-Gun (which translates to Suzuki Army), and is led by their leader and all around badass Minoru Suzuki (whose own theme is pretty bad ass). Not only is the theme absolutely awesome and can hype almost anyone up, but the army name being used, the militia type of actions they take just seems like both a really cool and welcoming match for the Montreal Militia.

St. Louis Scarecrows: This one actually came really easy to me when I first came up with the idea for this article. Scarecrows are creepy and have a spooky feel to them in some ways. The perfect combination from both a theme and music standpoint seems to be the early version of Bray Wyatt’s character. Not only was Bray Wyatt’s original theme and gimmick a spooky Southern cult, but he actually used scarecrows during his Wrestlemania 31 entrance, making this match seem a lot more obvious and less abstract in nature. Just listening to the song gives a spooky feeling and really fits in well with the Scarecrows moniker in general, in my opinion.

Vancouver Whalers: Last but certainly not least are the Vancouver Whalers, who once again being an animal make it a lot more difficult to find a decent match in theme and gimmick. After some deep thought, there really wasn’t anything to connected to an actual whale or water in general, so sadly, I had to reeallllllyyyyyy stretch this one here. Whales eat sharks, there is a wrestler named Shark Boy and I’d argue that the music also has a water type theme to it? Yeah, I know this one is a massive stretch, but this was the hardest one to do. Maybe a different wrestling fan on the site can suggest something I’m not thinking of directly.

I appreciate y’all reading this I hope what was interesting and unique article leading up to the draft and I home at least some of the SMJHL teams liked the themes I assigned for them. This was a good distraction before the draft and I hope it was to those being drafted who will read this. Best of luck to everyone later tonight.
