S48 Championship Week

Task 1

Both teams have done an exceptional job at building a competitive squad and being one of the best teams in the league. These teams have found a way to compete every season and be some of the toughest competition to other teams around the league.

What makes this even more interesting is that both teams are also set up nicely for the future, with bright spots moving forward. However, if I had to choose a group of prospects to build around, I’m going with the Winnipeg Jets. The Winnipeg Jets have Season 47 first overall pick, and my Whalers teammate Jax Duggan (@SecondSucks22), who will become a premier defenseman in the SHL. On top of that they have high end offensive talent Calogero Crudelli (@jason97), who has been flying under the radar being on an underwhelming Colorado Raptors squad.

This, however, was an extremely tough decision because the Stampede are set up very nicely with their own cupboard of young talent. I think if I could have the Stampede rookies AND their picks, I might have to go Stampede. However, as it stands, I’m going Jets.

Task 3

Well, this season could not have gone any better for me. Not only did I increase my regular season production drastically and share the team lead in points for the Vancouver Whalers, but we also managed to win the Four Star Cup! Some might say winning a championship would mean there’s nothing to work on, but that mentality only leads to stagnant performance and falling behind your peers.

While the season is over and I have announced I will be joining the Panthers next season, I sat down with my GMs (@Wasty and @JT3) in LA and spoke about what I need to do. Obviously being a rookie and entering the big leagues there’s going to be an adjustment period. My GMs have faith in me to step in to a spot on the 3rd line and perform and help this team move forward. The Panthers are going through a retool and my team expects me to be an integral part of this core moving forward.

Task 5
1. Put together a challenge cup fantasy team using the 2 teams in the finals as the player pool. This fantasy team must include at least 1 young player (S44 or higher) and in 50+ words discuss your choices.

Viktor Marius - Jason Visser - Lil Manius

Gary Grease - Tatu Mäkelä

Cedric Robinson

I don’t think there would be a fault in choosing this squad. From the offensive firepower to the defensive strength, there are no gaps in this lineup. The goaltending is a toss up, as both goalies would be worthy of making this team, however I chose Robinson as he is younger and looks to be slightly more complete than Moreau.

3. Winnipeg making it to the finals was an unexpected surprise. What were some of the main reasons why this franchise was able to persevere into the leagues most important series. (*tag anyone involved)

While it may have been unexpected, when you look at the top end talent that the Jets boast, it’s no surprise they can play with the league’s best. With guys like Jason Visser (@ToeDragon84) and Lil Manius (@Bonk) up front, Troy McClure III (@Troy_McClure03) and Gary Grease (@FlappyGiraffe) leading on the blue line, and a stud in goal with Cedric Moreau (@treant), nobody should discount the talent the Jets have.

5. Both franchises come into the series with a hot Cedric! Between Winnipegs Cedric Moreau and Buffallo's Cedric Robinson which emerging netminder has the advantage over the other in this series?

I have to go with the guy I chose to be the goalie of my fantasy team. Both goalies are very good, however I think Robinson has the advantage. He may be younger, but he’s been in this situation before and seems to be the more complete goaltender of the two. You can’t fault either, but if I had to choose, I’m going Robinson.

Task 6
When I created Theo Morgan, I knew that I wanted to be a goal scoring winger. Some of the inspiration for that came from being a winger myself and wanting to build a player that I could relate to (probably train this player in to being a much better version of a hockey player than I am, even if this is only a simulation).

Another reason I decided to do this was because I wanted to see if I could recreate a winger to have the same, or more, success as I had when I first joined the SHL back in Season 3. I had a very successful career and I wanted to have a comparable to go up against that. Granted, times have changed and the league is different now, but it would still be nice to see.

As for a comparable, I’d love for Morgan to turn out like Jason Visser. He’s been producing at the highest level for so long and he continues being one of the league’s best goal scorers.

Task 1:

It is pretty obvious that Monkey D. Luffy (@TnlAstatine ) would be a great piece to build a team with. Think about it: an uber active center that can adapt to the play around him, score goals, dish out assists, and can literally throw everything but the kitchen sink at his opponents. Some might say he's a choker, but that's unfair to him. Sure, his tenure as captain of the Lions never got him anywhere and went MIA in the finals sometimes, but he's got other things like... the fact that he's a monkey! Is that NOT EXCITING? Plus, he's the perfect spokesperson for a franchise. A natural born leader, he's great at getting his players to update (including the ever so lazy boi kris), and good at pumping up the players before a sim. Then there's the fact that he will indeed be a future captain. Dude is awesome and i woudn't have it any other way.

Task 3:

Hey @JSS and @Jepox ,

So... I'm finally gonna make that jump. Now that I have a Four Star Cup and a bunch of new pals, I feel like I'm ready to make my mark in SHL history. Of course, I do need some help. Firstly, while my assist game is much better, I can probably still do better. I've made my focus on the defensive aspects of the game, but I don't feel like it helps a whole lot when I'm taking too many penalties. Sure, I block a lot of shots, but nowhere near the amount that the better D men do. I feel like I've lost my way a little bit, but I want to improve. This is why I want to become a two way defender: not a total offensive liability, infact far from it, but still keeping that defensive prowess. I feel like if I can make these changes, I can definitely do some damage next season.

Task 5:

1. Marius - Passamus - Wagstrom ; Makela - Grease ; Robinson

There's a lot to take in here, but it's pretty simple: Marius and Passamus make up one of the most deadly pairs in the league, and adding a young stud like wagstrom only adds even more offensive prowess. Grease and Maleka not only give the grit and skill, but also the leadership. Then there's Robinson, who is one of the best young goalies the league has.

2. It's really hard to say, but i'll go ahead and say the combo of McClure, Grease and McScruff. These guys have had the playoff experience that is really hard to match, but they also offer the grit and veteranosity that not a lot of teams have AND put up the points.

3. If nothing else, it's because they know how to navigate the playoffs well. They know the traps: up and coming young team in the San Francisco Pride? Teach those young whippersnappers a lesson. The Western Confrence champs in the New Orleans Specters? Been there done that. It's all muscle memory for some of these guys at this point.

5. This has to be a joke. Cedric Robinson is the advantageous goaltender no doubt. How the hell can you compare a S39 inactive goalie that is hitting regression sooner than later against a S43 youngster that not only backstopped a championship team early in his career, but is also still growing? Very unfair comparison.

Task 10:

For this task, we will be looking at the S44 Challenge Cup Finals between the Winnipeg Jets and the West Kendall Platoon. Both Original Six teams, the series was a rematch of the last Challenge Cup Finals in S43, where the West Kendall Platoon swept an unprepared Jets team in 4 games. This time for the Jets, they took revenge in 6 games. Winnipeg was highlighted by their 1st line of Zach Evans, Jason Visser, and Corey, while the West Kendall Platoon was highlighted by Dani Foresburg, Alex Light, and Trevor Wilson. While the Platoon were heavy favorites to win after defeating the last hurrah of Alonzo Garbanzo and the Minnesota Chiefs, the Jets came out swinging in game one, taking the 4-2 victory. However, the Platoon would continue to use their scoring prowess to use, killing the Jets in games 2 and 5 of the series. However, the Jets responded in kind after those losses, securing the challenge cup victory.

This question's got an easy answer, and it's none other than Mr. Big Dick himself, Nick "Big Dick" Brain. @StadiumGambler is a phenomenal up and coming player from Great Britain who is one of the fastest rising stars in the west. Slated to play either on the 2nd line or 3rd line for Great Britain in the upcoming IIHF tournament, Brain is not only a fast, physical, and aggressive player, he's also got the cerebral mind and game knowledge to back up his skills by taking calculated risks. I've heard that he plans on adding even more grit to his game in the coming seasons, so I think if Winnipeg decides to build around Brain, as they should, they should surround him with other similar hard hitters and tough forechecking players, and the Jets will soon become the hardest team to play against. As for his off-ice qualities, Nick is known for his skills with technology -- I've heard rumours of him being an NHL 94 guru with modifying ROM files.

Yes, S48 is sadly over. Going into this season, I had high hopes both for myself and for the team. I had just come off an amazing rookie season, for which I was nominated for Rookie of the Year, and I expected that I would be improving at a nice and steady pace. However, what I discovered was that my season wasn't all that much better than my first one -- I actually scored fewer points this season than before, and my defensive stats also seemed to get worse. To be fair, I wasn't given as many opportunities on the power play this season, but all in all I still have a lot to improve on. I used to be an assist-generating machine, especially on the powerplay, but in fact most of those assists just came off missed shots and rebounds -- maybe this season I just ended up shooting into the goalie's crest more instead of missing the net? Either way, the only way I can see myself improving in terms of assists is to actually score some goals, or aim at the pads instead or something to generate more rebounds, unless I magically learn the ability to string together some passes and drive the play. Shoutout to @Ace and @hotdog for not criticizing my regression from my first season too much though -- they're giving me their trust that I'll improve in the right ways, and I appreciate that. Special appreciation for hotdog for being hotdog.

Both teams in our challenge cup series come in with a healthy set of talented young players. if you were to choose a player from either teams SHL roster or there prospect pool with a (start date of S45, S46, S47 or S48) to build your team around, who would it be and why? What qualities on or off the ice make them 'that guy' and how do you think they would shape the image of their franchise? (150+ words and *tag any player involved in this task)
Probably one of the easiest decisions I'll ever have to make, definitely will be going with Satoshi Zizagooney for this one. They're pretty damn good at hockey, and being athletic in the simulation hockey league we're dealing with, so they should absolutely be a top pick for starting a new franchise. I think they have like 1 or two extra testicles that have flooded their body with testosterone, they've got the T levels of like 4 or 5 Ben Waters, so they will be running around out of control for me. I'd like that a lot, I also like how nice they fold their socks and whatnot, very detailed guy and that's the type of work ethic I'm going to need for my really good team. If there were another player I could pick, well I wouldn't pick another one, I'd just ask for Zizagooney two times, and hope their moms remembers what to do, or I'm not really sure how all that works yet I have a class soon, but hell yeah my team that's new or whatever will be sick cause I'd get @TheWoZy

1. Put together a challenge cup fantasy team using the 2 teams in the finals as the player pool. This fantasy team must include at least 1 young player (S44 or higher) and in 50+ words discuss your choices.

2. This series boasts an interesting matchup at the blue line between star studded defenders! Which includes Troy McClure III, Gary Grease and Slip McScruff from Winnipeg.. & Buffalo's Tatu Makela, Connor Tanner and Charles Walker.. which group do you expect will outshine the other and why?

3. Winnipeg making it to the finals was an unexpected surprise. What were some of the main reasons why this franchise was able to persevere into the leagues most important series.  (*tag anyone involved)

4. Buffalo has made it to the finals in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Who or what has been a primary reason for the recent success of this franchise. (*tag anyone involved)

5. Both franchises come into the series with a hot Cedric! Between Winnipegs Cedric Moreau and Buffallo's Cedric Robinson which emerging netminder has the advantage over the other in this series?

1. For my fantasy team I would pick the following roster:
F- Finn McCool: Elite level skater, and has a medical marijuana card, so I think they'll be a valuable asset for any fantasy team. Would be my first pick if I had #1.
F- Eric Vanderberg: Sick player no doubt I gotta have this guy for their top tier level backwards skating ability, and their great checking ability. Big time fantasy player.
F- Andrew Hawkins: Seriously good player for the jets, going to carry my fantasy team to success I think. Would be very happy to get them you know.
D- Eric Vanderberg: chose them for being a player from after S44 or whatver but the're a killer for sure, going to get me like 400 fantasy points I bet.
D- Fjorm Lyeskov is a shot blocking machine, will lead my team in that category I think. Going to win with this group I think, no stopping it, no way.
G - Buffalo goalie  Kyle Davis, i don't really want Robinson they're not much of my type of a fantasy player, so I think sticking with Davis is the safest bet.

If I had to build an entire team around just one of the players from these teams I would build around Winnipeg’s Slip McScruff @Scrufdaddy. I am defense first kind of guy and in my opinion you can’t go wrong with building around Slip on the backend. On the ice, Slip is solid defensively and also can chip in on the scoreboard. He was a +17 this year with 32 points. To add onto that he threw 154 hits and blocked 64 shots. You can’t ask for much more from a defenseman. Off the ice I know Slip is very active. We were briefly teammates on Team USA in the WJC and he seemed to always be doing something for the team. You don’t just want some primadonna dynamo to build your team around. You want a guy like Slip that can make people around him better on and off the ice.

What’s up @JR95 ? Let’s get the negative parts of the year out of the way first. Points-wise I regressed this year. I dropped back down to the same production as my rookie year. But that’s not why I’m on the team, right? My game is all about the defensive zone. This year I blocked a few less shots than last season but also with a little bit less time on ice. My physical game had a big uptick and I eclipsed my total hits despite less time on ice. Since joining the league I’ve put off developing my physical game in order to work on my speed and defensive games. After this season I am as good at both of those as I possible can be. I’m going to be getting stronger and nastier in our end. I know I need to work on my offensive game but my passing skill is alright enough. If I can get some more ice time next season, I think I can make the next jump in my career.

PBE CW Welfare (Not sure if I can use this as a welfare for CW here, if not it's fine)

TASK 1: If I were to build a team, it would be around Buffalo Center Monkey D. Luffy from season 46. I think the Center position is the best position to build around as they're that large presence on the ice that other players rely on to keep the flow of the game moving. That being said, as one of the highest earners on his team for that season, it shows that he has a sense of pride for his team and wants to be able to compete for his team and help put them in the position they've gotten too so far. My favorite player of all time, Joe Thornton has been the Center that has kept the Sharks together in the NHL for the longest time after his trade, that's part of my reasoning why I prefer centers and it's even in the name of the position, center, they're built for the job.

Task 6: I decided to make a Goalie because it feels like such an important position that plays so differently from all the other positions in the game. I like to think of my player as a hybrid between his physical strengths and his mental strength making him a threat before the net. I felt like when making a goalie that skating was something that goalies would be sort of bad at and that's why I made it my weakness. I've been focusing on my rebound control as well as my agility and hand control to make myself someone who can move around the zone to hold off the tricks some of the more seasoned vets might try to pull on me. I'd like to see myself trying to compete for the higher save percentages in the league. I know i'm a little bit behind the curve development but i'm trying my best  Blush

If there's one player i'd build my teams future around it would be Cassius Darrow, Buffalo got good forward that will remain competitive for a long time. But with both Charles Walker and Alexis Metzler aging rapidly and Tatu Makela already in regression the Buffalo blue line really needs another stud defender. Factor in that super star defender GOD "of balls" McZehrl was traded away for picks as well the oh so bright blue line really needs a future stud. Cassius Darrow checks all those marks as he's one of the best developing defenders in the league. His role on the blue line should already be a top-2 one the next season on the cup winning team. I can see Darrow having a similar impact as Metzler has had on the franchise and leave as one of the greatest with already 2 cups and more on the horizon, and as a buffalo play myself i love having Darrow in the locker room.

S48 is the third season for Hippo Passamus in the big leagues, while getting top 6 minutes from the get go Hippo doesn't seem to be living up to the hype. He's been averaging around 0.5ppg and need to step up his game or be overtaken by the many young forwards in the buffalo prospect shelf. Hippo has a long contract and might be getting a little comfy since he's getting paid for a long time. Maybe a fire needs to be lit under his ass to get the production going. Next season we have regression going in on both top 2 centers of the stampede and it might be time for the young ones to step in and hold the fort down the middle. a Passamus Selich tandem as centers might not be far of, and maybe that's what Hippo needs to light his game up, more responsibility and more hard work? @WannabeFinn @Tomen

C- Viktor Marius
W- Hippo Passamus
W- Louie Garret
D- Tatu Makelä
D- Cassius Darrow
G- Cedric Robinsson

All Buffalo team cause I'm a homer like that. Upfront we got the leading line in ppg with Marius leading the pack.
In the back we have Solid shutdown defender Tatu and young Darrow providing offensive flair.
In net we have Robinson who's always hot when it comes to finals!

2.
Funny that you forget Metzler and Darrow when they are just as important on the blue line as Tanner and Walker. Both played an instrumental role on buffalo's path to the finals. I think there's a clear cut winner in this category. It's buffalo all the way, they just have a more cohesive defense.

3.
Jets are still young, even though Visser is old as a dinosaur. But even if they are young they got a lot of grit. These guys are not afraid to throw their bodies around and when you keep hitting and hitting, things start to happen. I believe that's the difference maker between a conference finals and finals. @ToeDragon84

4.
100% the GM's @WannabeFinn and @Tomen , not only by drafting and trading really well, but also by how they manage the dynamic in the locker room. Whilst managing a quite bad reputation they have managed to make the picks work for them and held a tight knit group together over the last couple of seasons. I'd say the only one that's recently left the LR and doesn't like it is @ThatDamnWalrus

This season had a little bit of growing pains for Mikael Choybuk. He did not accomplish anything amazing with 10 goals and 4 assists, for 14 points in 50 games. Although, his shot percentage was decent at a 12.66%. As a younger player, nobody expected Choybuk to light it up, but it was a little disappointing as far as I am concerned. But, the main thing for me was that the Dragons made the playoffs, because I am more of a team player. In the playoffs, Choybuk actually stepped it up. He had 5 goals and 2 assists, for 7 points in 11 games. That is a lot better of a points per game than his regular season obviously, so you can tell he definitely improved over the season. Ultimately, Calgary lost in the playoffs, so it's on to the next one for Choybuk and the Drags. What needs to be improved is his consistency, and his defensive play. Choybuk is not that physical of a player, so he does not put up a lot of hits or block a ton of shots, so if he rounds his game out more, then it should all come together. @Steelhead77

Pick up to 4 challenge cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth '1' TPE. Each answer must be '50' words or more.

1. Starting off my fantasy team would be players from the Buffalo Stampede. Viktor Marius, Louie Garrett and Alexis Metzler. I think it goes without saying that those 3 players have been huge fantasy picks for a long time now. Constant offensive productive from the 2 forwards, and Metzler has always been a big producer as well. Nick Brainwould be the young player I choose for this roster from the Jets, as he is a young player with a huge future ahead of him, never mind just these playoffs. Then to round out the roster I will be sliding in Gary Grease from the Jets as well. He has been producing all post season, and is of course a threat in the regular season to boot.

2. I think Alexis Metzler, Connor Tanner, and Tatu Makela will outshine the Winnipeg Jets' defensemen. Metz, Tanner, and Makela I believe have been such consistent top players for longer in the league in general, and I think Buffalo just has the right edge in their combination of offensive prowess and physicality.

5. I have to say that Cedric Robinson has the edge over Cedric Moreau. Both goaltender's save percentage and goals against averages are very similar, but I think that Robinson's experience and the veteran defense behind him will help him prevail in these finals. Both goaltenders are obviously fantastic, so it is a hard toss up between the two, but those are my thoughts. Robinson has a few more playoff games under his belt this post-season as well.

Down 3-0 in the series to Hamilton, the Calgary Dragons would become the first team in SHL history to come back from down 3-0 in the finals to win the Challenge Cup in S27. This was my first player Michael Boychuk's first cup as well, the first of his 5 thanks to being a Dragon on Esa's teams. Nicholas Pedersen, Randy Randleman and Esa Anrikkanen were huge players for the Dragons in those playoffs, as well as Sachimo Zoidberg. Michael Boychuk, my own player was great as well, putting up 5 goals and 5 assists in those playoffs, for 10 points in 18 games. Nobody expected Calgary to win the cup after going down 3-0, but they had the will and determination to come back and win 3 in a row, including the Challenge Cup winning goal in Game 7 OT. Hunter Wong was the goaltender for Calgary, and he carried the team in many games himself. Even VLAD McZehrl was on that team, but there's just too many players for me to name that I want to name, considering I was playing with them. That was a fun season that propelled my activity in the SHL to higher levels.

As much as I rag on him, I have to go with my former junior buddy, Mr Monkey D. Luffy. He's shown hes very committed to the league, site, and his team. He's a monster of a TPE earner, and doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon in that regard, also, he's a centre. A top earning centreman is a great pick up for any team to have, and most would be lucky to get someone of this guys caliber. Dealing with him in discord is a great time too, he's always there for someone to talk to, and having him on your team means the locker room will never be empty. He can step in and be a natural leader on any team, and having him join up forces with @Tomen and @WannabeFinn I think will be the groundwork of a dangerous team for many seasons to come.

For most of us S48 is over and now its time to sit down with your GM's for a season end review! talk to your GM's about what youve accomplished, what you are strong at, what you need to improve on and what would you like your role to be moving into S49. Task must be 150 words or more. (*Tag your GM’s)

I recently sat down with the GM of the Calgary Dragons, Esa Anrikkannen. I asked what he thought of my past and future within the organization. "You're strong on Defense in the D zone, blocked shots and being physical, good puck mover, break out passes etc. You're in more of a shut down role at the moment but will be expanding your offense in the coming seasons. That's probably the biggest area for improvement, offense. You'll be in a similar role next season, pair 2 and PK. Then when the offense comes up, we'll get you on the powerplay."

Coming into the SHL as an offensive defenseman, I had a bit of a different role in mind, but I must say that I love the role I have now. When Calgary drafted me, they also drafted another offensive D in Chico Smeb, then proceeded to pair us together. As I had a bit better defensive stats, I was moved into a more defensive role and have embraced it.

RW - Lil' Manius
LW - Viktor Marius
C - Jason Visser
D - Gary Grease
D - Tatu Makela
G - Vivian Leblanc

This team is a legitimate fantasy contender. You have Visser and Marius who are constant top threats in fantasy. Grease and Makela who are no slouches either, Manius, who really came onto the fantasy scene in a big way this year. Then Leblanc, as really goalies are the least of my worries in fantasy and I needed to fill my young player spot.

I think Buffalos core will outshine Winnipegs. Winnipeg has an outstanding offensive game, but I think the Stampede D core will be able to step up in a big way and shut them down. Both teams have plenty of fire power, but in the end I think it will come down to the defensive battle, and I think Buffalos is just a hair better then the Jets.

3. Winnipeg making it to the finals was an unexpected surprise. What were some of the main reasons why this franchise was able to persevere into the leagues most important series.  (*tag anyone involved)

I think Winnipeg had a great season, and yes they did excel past many peoples expectations, I think there's 3 main players that really helped push Winnipeg over the edge. The play of Lil' Manius was stellar and showed what he will be capable of for seasons to come. The other 2 are part of the Jets old guard, in Jason Visser and Crossfit Jesus. Both looked like men possessed all season as they showed what geriatics are capable of.

@Bonk , @CFJ , @ToeDragon84

4. Buffalo has made it to the finals in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Who or what has been a primary reason for the recent success of this franchise. (*tag anyone involved)

Buffalo has built up a strong core in Marius, Makela, Metzler and Walker and now looks to be bringing up a new core in Svensson, Sharp, Luffy, Selich and Robinson. They are a tough team to compete against and look to be quite a force for the next few seasons. All these players as well as the supporting cast is what has given Buffalo success the past few seasons.

Coming into the SHL I created as an offensive defensemen. I picked this as I wanted to have a bit more of a defensive role, but also contribute a bit on the scoresheet. I felt there was a bit of a need for D in my draft as it seemed it was pretty forward heavy. Coming into the SHL, I have found myself in more of a defensive role, which actually I am embracing as all I want is team success. Don't get me wrong, having personal success is great, but my one major goal is to get a Challenge Cup and I am willing to play any role on the team to help us towards that goal. My defensive partner, Chico Smeb has upped his offensive game considerably since he has moved up, so I feel like being more responsible defensively in a complimentary role to him is best for my game and the team at this point.

Both the Winnipeg Jets and the Buffalo Stampede have solid groups of young players, but the top young gun from either team would have to be Buffalo's Alexander Selich. The German, who was drafted in S45, was a can't miss prospect coming into the league and though his first couple of seasons were somewhat underwhelming on a deep Buffalo team, Selich is now just beginning to show his superstar potential. After putting up a respectable 29 points in the regular season, Selich broke out during these playoffs, putting 16 points in 22 games, helping his team win the Challenge Cup. And he did all of this while centering the third line, playing only 14 and a half minutes a game. He's been stuck behind a pair of superstar centres in Viktor Marius and Dermot Lavelle, but as those two start to age, Selich is primed to step up and seamlessly take their place on this powerhouse Stampede team.

C - VIktor Marius
W - Lil Manius
W - Louie Garett
D - Alexis Metzler
D - Slip McScruff
G - Cedriv Robinson

Marius and Manius are top fantasy threats, as both are elite goal scorers with a physical side to their game. Garrett is one of the most consistent offensive producers in the league. Metzler is getting up there in age, but has played exceptionally during the playoffs. McScruff may not put up many points, but he'll get you hits and shot blocks. Lastly, Robinson plays for the better team so hes the better fantasy pick.

While both the Buffalo Stampede and Winnipeg Jets have good defenses, the Stampede's group of defenseman are on another level. While Winnipeg's Gary Grease is the best defenseman playing in the finals, I'd say any one of Buffalo's top four of Tatu Makela, Charles Walker, Alexis Metzler and Connor Tanner could be the second best defenseman on the Jets. The Stampede's vets all have Challenge Cup experience and are still elite defenseman.

3. Winnipeg making it to the finals was an unexpected surprise. What were some of the main reasons why this franchise was able to persevere into the leagues most important series.  (*tag anyone involved)
Winnipeg was able to make it to the finals because they possess elite players in Jason Visser, Gary Grease and Lil Manius. Having elite talent is a prerequisite to winning in the SHL. Even though the rest of Winnipeg's roster is somewhat lacklustre, their top players are good enough to raise the overall level of the team and drag them to the Finals.

4. Buffalo has made it to the finals in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Who or what has been a primary reason for the recent success of this franchise. (*tag anyone involved)
The Stampede have been one of the league's best teams for many seasons now, and that is due to their general managers, WannabeFinn and Tomen. These two have been in charge for all of Buffalo's current run of success, and have made all the right moves, drafting and trading well. This season, the team made a couple of big trades, acquiring retiring defenseman Connor Tanner and superstar Louie Garrett, both of whom contributed greatly to their Cup win.

The S35 Challenge Cup Finals were played between the Toronto North Stars and the Portland Admirals, two franchises looking for their first Cup wins. The Stars had suffered heartbreak season-after-season in the playoffs, while the Admirals were in their second consecutive Finals after a miraculous comeback from a tampering scandal. The Admirals jumped out to a 3-1 series lead and it seemed the series was over. However, Toronto swapped starting goalies, benching young phenom Jeff Kirkstone in favor of veteran Mark Harter. Harter had been the franchise's star goalie for 10+ seasons, but had been traded away to the Admirals to make room for Kirkstone. With Harter's career winding down, the Admirals traded him back to the Stars at the S35 trade deadline. This would come back to bite them, as Harter turned the tide on the series, winning three straight games to steal the series for the Stars. The Stars also received great performances from the retiring Andrey Barbashev and their captain, Kristian Eriksson.

If I had to choose one player on either Winnipeg or Buffalo to build my team around, I would pick Nick Brain @StadiumGambler. I would be Brain because to me he is perfectly balanced with both his on ice and off ice production. He has a very high TPE count for a S46 player with 807 TPE and this translated big in the playoffs. Brain produced 14 points in 19 games so it looks like his high TPE is translating to a good game on the ice. If he continues this upward trajection, I think he will eventually be locked in on the first line of the Jets, dominating on the wing in both ends of the ice. He also has a healthy bank account and looks to be very committed to continuing to improve that in order to make sure if any issues come up he's set. Brain is a top notch young player and I would love to build around him.

Hello @Wasty and @JT3, thank you for meeting me at this time. This season, I think I had a solid season as a true rookie. Though the offensive side of my game lagged, I think I played very well in my own end. I ranked up high with other rookies in both hits and shot blocks and I think going forward this will be the strength of my game. I was able to be trusted on any defensive pairing and I think going forward this will continue to be the case. My biggest area to improve is on the offensive side of the puck. If my offensive output can match my defensive output, I think I could end up being an elite defensemen in the SHL. I think in S49 I will be playing a similar game I played this season but maybe getting more points. I'm hoping to put up close to 100 hits with close to 80 shot blocks. I'm also aiming for 20 points but I hope to get even more than that.

My team is very Buffalo heavy but overall when using SHL Fantasy as a basis, you need to really consider the effect of hits as much as points. Marius is a very easy pick because he can both hit and score. Metzler is the best defender on either team and Selich is the best younger player. The decision on Kevin Hamilton was to balance out the hits lost on Selich and Metzler. Grease is the best defender on Winnipeg and Robinson was an easy choice because he's been the best goalie in the playoffs.

For my current player, I decided to go back to the well and make a player that is similar to the player I'm most known for. My original player was Teemu Nurmi, a two-way defensemen who could be counted on for 30 points a season and a solid defensive game. Though Nurmi was never a superstar, he was an important part of two Challenge Cup teams in S15 and S16. I thought that coming back from inactivity after three players who all busted, this would be the easiest way for me to get back into the swing of things. I picked two-way defensemen as my template because it was the only one I felt really comfortable with. I enjoy contributing at both ends of the ice so neither offensive or defensive defensemen really worked for me. In the SHL, I hope to be a defensemen who embodies the idea of a two-way defensemen. I want to put up a lot of points, a lot of hits and a lot of shot blocks and contribute in every way I can.

CW TASK 1: (Written, 3 TPE)
Both teams in our challenge cup series come in with a healthy set of talented young players. if you were to choose a player from either teams SHL roster or there prospect pool with a (start date of S45, S46, S47 or S48) to build your team around, who would it be and why? What qualities on or off the ice make them 'that guy' and how do you think they would shape the image of their franchise? (150+ words and *tag any player involved in this task)

Both teams have a tremendous amount of young talent and it's really difficult to pin down one player you'd build around. For Buffalo I'd have to go with Bobby Sharp. @Nerio is a Kelowna alumni and was an awesome member and contributor while he was there, so much so that we put him into our little front office to help out with the larger picture. Already productive in the SHL as well, putting up 10 points in the playoffs as a rookie. For the Jets, I'll have to go with Jax Duggan. @SecondSucks22 is, in my opinion, the best prospect for Winnipeg entering next season. Likely to get the call for the major leagues, he's been tearing it up in Vancouver and posted nearly a point per game in the playoffs enroute to a Four Star Cup win in game seven. Both players are major pieces of their team's future, and will shape them for many seasons.

@dankoa @Jearim

I think this upcoming season is going to be really a pivotal one for Noah Konn. The past two seasons have been really frustrating in terms of production considering my TPE count but that's just the way it goes. This past one I set career highs in almost every category, including goals, assists, points, +/- (where I was among the league leaders) and hits. I think to really make this player worth my time, I'll have to explode for close to, if not OVER a point per game this upcoming season + eclipse the 200 hit mark, which should give me a nod for top power forward in the league with any luck.

Endurance, Puck Handling, Passing and Defense will all be at 90 (maxed for them) to start the season, with of course Scoring still at 99. Skating and Strength are my other 99-eligible stats, which will be somewhere in the mid-90's to start the season as well.

CW TASK 05: (4 TPE)
1. Put together a challenge cup fantasy team using the 2 teams in the finals as the player pool. This fantasy team must include at least 1 young player (S44 or higher) and in 50+ words discuss your choices.

F - Ola Wagstrom: Highest TPE player under S44, pretty easy slide in here.
F - Jason Visser: Classic shoe-in pick for fantasy the past 5+ seasons.
F - Viktor Maruis: Top TPE player in the series, should be a huge momentum shifter.
D - Tatu Makela: One of the top defenders in the league, easy choice here as well.
D - Gary Grease: Top defender for Winnipeg, will go head-to-head with Makela.
G - Cedric Robinson: My choice for top goalie between the two teams, close one though.

Now that the series is over and Buffalo came out on top, I think what pushed them over the edge was clear experience mixed with young talent, but mainly the experience. Walker was the most seasoned of the veterans on the blueline this series and it really showed, mixed with the experience of Makela and dedication of Tanner.

3. Winnipeg making it to the finals was an unexpected surprise. What were some of the main reasons why this franchise was able to persevere into the leagues most important series.

Tremendous output by the younger players on the team. Winnipeg has a great core of older & aging players, but it's the younger ones that really pushed them into the finals this season. Manius, Wagstrom, McScruff, Brain... just a few of the names that really carried a large amount of the workload, allowing the older players to still be effective.

4. Buffalo has made it to the finals in 2 of the last 3 seasons. Who or what has been a primary reason for the recent success of this franchise.

One of the heaviest teams in the league when it comes to raw talent and player development as a whole. Metzler, Walker and Garrett lead the group of older players followed quickly by Makela, Tanner, Lavelle and Konig. Development & production from their younger players has been exceptional as well with the emergence of players like Passamus, Robinson, Selich and even Sharp and Svensson.

Elimination Game: http://simulationhockey.com/showthread.php?tid=79178

I'm going to have to cover one of the most star-studded finals in SHL history, and it was the last Challenge Cup the Renegades captured. For this, we take a brief trip back to S36, where the Texas Renegades came flying into the finals against the New England Wolfpack, a dynasty to be feared at the time. Texas was not to be underestimated though, as they were led by Jack Durden, who was soon to be the all-time leading scorer for the Renegades. For the Wolfpack, it was all about Mia Landvik, who would eventually go down as one of the greatest defenders in the history of the league.

It was a tight series, but Texas struck first with a quick 2-0 series lead. Wolfpack came back with a win, but Texas struck again to put them on the brink. New England stayed alive on home ice to force game six, where they eventually lost and Texas snapped their lengthy Challenge Cup drought, and seemingly put an end to New England's dynasty.

If I had to pick one player as a face to my franchise or as someone to build a team around it would probably be Gary Grease @flappygirrafe. He is a leader in the room and his player is fantastic. I think he's the kind of guy you can build an all star defense around with him as the center piece, there's really nothing he can't do. During the season he is almost always near the top of fantasy scoring and his stats really speak for themselves. Off the ice Grease is a leader on the team and in the league, he is extremely involved in IIHF with Team Canada, he's also part of the management group for the jets. Having a guy like that on your team not only benefits you on the ice but also when it comes to making management decisions and working with players on the team.

For most of us S48 is over and now its time to sit down with your GM's for a season end review! talk to your GM's about what youve accomplished, what you are strong at, what you need to improve on and what would you like your role to be moving into S49. Task must be 150 words or more. (*Tag your GM’s)
I think Phelps had a good season, but he's been so consistent that it's kinda expected for him to hit 40+ points and have reasonable contributions. This off-season it's clear that Phelps is going to have to step it up, he has a lot of solid teammates that are retiring and a lot more will be on his shoulders. He needs to be able to take those extra minutes and turn them into more productivity. Look for Phelps to try to impress his GMs and aim for higher than a point per game performance this coming season. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the discussion for awards. If he can somehow lead the Steelhawks back into the playoffs after they've just lost so many good quality players he will definitely be a candidate for the season MVP, but even if they don't make the playoffs he needs to step it up and aim higher than ever before.

Pick up to 4 challenge cup related topics to write about! Each topic is worth '1' TPE. Each answer must be '50' words or more.

2. While I love the three D that Winnipeg has to offer I suspect that the Buffalo D will outshine the Jets merely because Buffalo has a lot more quality players in other positions. The Jets still look like a team that can compete, but I don't see them keeping up with the depth that Buffalo can boast.
3. Can I tag Simon T? I think the Jets did a great job working with the lineup that they have, if you think back about 10 seasons the Jets were one of those teams who ran with 6 forwards and 4 defense and just played the crap out of them. Times have changed and so have the rules, so they can't quite do this like before, but it seems they tried their best at it.
4. I mean you have to give props to @WannabeFinn and @Tomen just for being the GMs and builders of that team, but I think when we look back in future seasons we will be giving props to Minnesota for Buffalo's continued success for a very very long time. One trade should be enough to keep them as contenders for a long time.
5. Buffalo just has a stronger team in front of their Cendric. If you're giving the edge to a goalie I'd base it solely on the quality of team and depth on the ice in front of them. Not to say Moreau is chopped liver, but Robinson has to have the edge since he will almost always have a high end player or 5 out there in front of him.

For those in the SMJHL, your job is to fine tune your game to be ready for a call up to the SHL. Part of that fine tuning is having to decide what kind of player you want to be. That can be a tough decision to make as it impacts your entire career! What made you decide on the position you picked? why did you choose your specific player template and talk to us about the type of player in the SHL that you would like your game to resemble. (must be 150+ words)
Back when I created my player I just wanted to be useful to someone. I didn't really know much about how STHS worked or how the update system would work, so I went with what I considered a fairly versatile build that was just lacking in scoring ability. My hope at the time was to be a playmaker who can shadow players when defending and get the puck moved to a goal scorer and up the ice. Unfortunately in STHS Checking is more of a hitting skill than actual checking and scoring is extremely valuable to a point that it hurts a ton if it's a weakness, so after not long I changed my build around and made checking my weakness. I don't think I could ever go back and I don't think Phelps would have half the renown that he does now if he was a checking and passing player rather than a more versatile player that he became.

CW TASK 1
If I were to choose a player from either Buffalo's or Winnipeg's roster or their prospect pool with the caveat being that they had to be S45 or newer to build my team around,I think I'd have to go with Alexander Selich.  I might be biased because I've known the player of Selich a while and know just how hard he works, but also part of it being the fact that I went up against him a few times in the playoffs and just overall he's a tough guy to cover and he just does so much things on the offensive side of the game that I think he'd be the perfect building piece.  I know that that might not be the most conventional way to start out the build of a team as others might opt for an defensive player, but I think that you can't go wrong choosing Selich as the main piece to start your team. @Tomen

CW TASK 3
Well S48 didn't really go for me personally as I had hoped, but at least I won the race between me and Serpe on who would score the first goal.  As far as what I accomplished, that list is pretty empty.  I at least was able to stay out on the ice for a good bit and didn't get into much trouble as I only had 6 penalty minutes on the year and overall I proved to be a pretty good piece for my line as for a good amount of the year I was top 5 on the team in +/-.   Overall I think I'm pretty good at spacing and facilitating the puck around and I'm pretty good at blocking shots.  I think maybe aside from gradually improving in most every area I think my shot needs a ton of work.  During the regular season I shot it 23 times and I don't think a single one was a real threat of actually going in. @TheDangaZone @JKortesi81

CW Task 5
2. Well it's a bit after the fact now that the series is over, but if you had asked me this before the series even began I'd still have gone with Buffalo's group of Tatu Makela, Connor Tanner and Charles Walker.  Now I might have been biased in that selection for the simple fact that we had just played them and they beat us, but they truly are great players and tough to do a ton against.

3. I think looking at Winnipeg it's not really that big of a surprise that they made it as far as they have.  Sure they might not be star studded as some other teams, but when you got a defense that comprises of Troy McClure III, Gary Grease and Slip McScruff I think you make it hard for opposing teams and will always give your offense a chance to win you some games. @Troy_McClure03 @FlappyGiraffe @Scrufdaddy

4. Honestly I think it again comes back to the defense for Buffalo.  They have some great defensive pieces and like I said before about Winnipeg, when you've got some strong defense you will always put your team in a position where the offense can win it for you.  I think Makela is one of the strongest dudes I've been on the ice with so I'll give him a nod. @WannabeFinn

5. This one might come as a surprise to some but I would have gone with Robinson.  While he was actually one of the worst goalies in the SHL during the regular season (at least as far as top 10 goalies goes), but for whatever reason he really found his groove in the playoffs and flipped that switch and just dominated games.  I'm not really sure anyone could explain it, but when a dude catches fire and gets hot it takes a lot to put out that flame
