Especially at this level, you can’t win hockey games by yourself even though we might sometimes want to or feel like we have. I wanted to see just how accurate that statement was when it came to hockey as I’m pretty new to the sport myself. It’s kind of hard to see how important something like teamwork is without directly watching games live so I decided to look at assist numbers. The research I did would look at if a team with high assist numbers performed better overall than a team that didn’t which leads me to my first method.

The first method I tried to answer this question was looking at the assist numbers of the top five teams and the numbers for the bottom five to see how they compare.

Conclusion based on this information

Based on this information it is obvious to see that assist do indeed correlate to more wins as the top five teams had 1421 assist with an average of 5.684 while the bottom five only had 1274 assist with an average of 5.096. That's a difference of 147 assists and a 0.588 per game average! However, when looking at the numbers, I found two of the team of the bottom five had better assist numbers than two of those in the top five. I decided to then rank the teams based on the number of assists rather than wins.

What did this information tell me?

Honestly, this information didn’t tell me much that I didn’t already know which was that the teams with better assist numbers, performed better overall. 

What I did next

After compiling teams into the top 5 and bottom 5’s I wanted to take a different approach to see if I would get a different result than the conclusion I had already arrived at or at the very least confirm my observations. The method I chose was to take a team's average assist per game, then look through every game to see if their amount of assist exceeded the average, and to record if they had won or lost that game. This would provide me with more accurate data than that of which you can see at the surface level.

Summary
Higher assists numbers can mean multiple things such as better teamwork which is what I’m looking for but assist numbers could also be low due to lack of lethal scorers or a great defense as well. As a result, the data I have collected might be flawed but with it, the conclusion I have reached is that teamwork is very important in the game of hockey if you want to win games. The data gathered above proves as much as the win rate when a team achieves assist numbers above average is 43% higher than when they didn’t.
