They had a fantastic S50 draft and made some good value trades to add to their roster...kinda short sighted to pop open the standings and just use those to judge GM performance.

I mean if you want to go from that angle, every SMJHL team has to go through a major rebuild every 4 or 5 seasons, as is the cycle of the SMJHL. If we went off of who had a really good draft and trades, then different teams should have won it over the years. Its off of what a GM did that season. Drafting is a big part yes, but Standings should be held at a higher standard, especially Detroit this season. 31-13-6 is a really good record, 191 GF and 144 GA, is the 2nd lowest GA and 1st highest GF. The last time you go back with that type of spread is actually S44 with Detroit having 187 GF and 139 GA, and if you go a season back you get Vancouver with 176 GF and 130 GA. (Both Detroit and Vancouver won the Mathias Chouinard Award those season as well, and were top in their league)

Last time someone had over 190 GF as well was STL in S47 with 190 GF,  Vancouver in S44 with 193 GF.

As well with a Top PP 23.5%, and a below average PK (78.77%). In Shots for and Shots against they were top in those categories as well, having a top FO%.

As well as having a .500 or more winning record with every team. They never went below .500 on a team, either winning the series or tying the series in terms of wins.

Not really short sighted, more of just dominant of their season.

There’s a difference between a rebuild and what LET were you should know this you were literally a GM in the league when the practically non existent LET GMs were fired. They had so little to work with and they’ve built so much so yes it is short sighted to consider only standings and nothing else. This isn’t even a knock on Tig and Nour they did a great job building DET and should be there over some other teams, it’s just really really weird that out of all the teams there you decided to call out LET.

Hello people,

We did something different with Most Underrated this season--SMJHL GMs were asked to nominate one player from their team they believe is the most underrated and explain why. From there, the Awards Committee took those and voted for the their top 3 options. All 10 nominees deserved recognition, but the four there stood out.

Full Onoprienko Nominees:

ANC- Raphael D'Alcott
ANA - Kevin Robinson
COL - Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg (DQ'd because their GM is big dumb and he'd hit IA status)
DET - Izem Aboiye
HFX - FR Finn-Rhys
KEL - Prince Devitt
LET - Markus Tegernako
MTL - Zbigniew Pokrywka
STL - Jakub Bruchevski
VAN - Francois Breton

Explanations for the nominations available upon request

Though just for clarification when voting, are the voters taking into account past years moves when making GMOTY? Like DET iirc didn’t do too much roster movement before last season other than adding a couple rookies to their depth, most of their real roster building was done in the past (as it should be).  So is GMOTY really like best GM of the past few seasons with also good results this season? Or are they strictly judging it based on only things that happened this season?

We pretty heavily focus on the current season, including both the on ice results and moves made to improve the team. We looked a lot at some advanced stats like roster quality, CF%, PDO, etc. Specifically focusing on DET, their roster performed as expected while also having the highest average and actual TPE roster in the league. You raise a valid point that some of their big moves happened in previous seasons, so the process is imperfect. The committee was pretty consistently in agreement on DET outside the top 3, and I think, all in all, we got the correct finalists.

I think you are overstating their rebuild. Yeah of course, I know the situation Lethbridge was in, its a place where a lot of GMs were at. Only a couple people active, rookies didnt pan out, everyone else moved up to the SHL. All of the SMJHL teams have been through a rebuild like that. I think in the end of S45 I only had 4 active players, and I had to draft and get in FA a bunch of players, and thats what I did in S46, its a cycle. And I called out both LET and MTL. I know what they did there was really good, but its the cycle of it all.

:surprisepikachu:  wouldnt you think that being at the top of the league and having a good players = good gm?  If its not about results Asclap is a great GM who fosters great growth in rookies and sophomores alike, why not nominate him? because of the on ice results werent there.

I said it was *more* than the results. It's not a binary thing. Obviously the results matter (they're setting the lines after all), but clearly everyone felt like those 4 nominee pairs were better for the ambiguous title of "Top GM Duo". Some seasons you'll find results matter more, but clearly this year a good season wasn't enough to get the nomination. I cant speak for lethbridge or detroit, but I know Fuzz and Trella have done an excellent job both in drafting and fostering growth in the locker room. I would assume the other 3 pairs are just as good or better and I would also assume it was a close race to get that top 4. No big deal

You don't need to make moves to be a good GM though, sometimes simply keeping the roster together is impressive enough, especially when you have 4th year players like Detroit did iirc. Once you have basically a capped top 9 / top 6 plus some high tpe 4th liners there isn't much you can (or should) do in terms of trades / fa signings. By the way they got pingy to redistribute his unusable build, so that was a significant improvement.

I calculated average tpe in S48 and Detroit wasn't that good, so they improved a lot in S49 by getting their sophomores to reach 300+ tpe and keeping their veterans. Also I just remembered that Izem Abioye was acquired via a trade in the offseason.

At the end of the day Detroit built one of the most dominant teams in recent memory, and they did it in a season when almost everyone was rebuilding after the reddit draft. If you look at roster quality no one was even close. I ran some test sims out of curiosity and it was really really impressive, they won .700-.750 % of games. So I don't see how you can make an argument for any other team to win it, they were just that good. Really interesting selection

The SMJHL's S49 Award Show is now underway! Good luck to all the nominees!

To begin, we're going to start off with the ward that caused the most discussion following the release of the nominations: The Mathias Chouinard Award for the league's best GMs! With the outrage over @notorioustig and @nour not getting a nomination done with, we can celebrate the nominees for all their accomplishments.
