S51 PT #3 - SHL Board Game

The Game of SHL GMs, a Game of Life edition.
First up, like the Game of Life, you have a decision to make. In this version, it’s either the Head GM road (“Labour”) or the Co-GM road(“University”). Both lead to the Head GM role at the end of the split, but the Co-GM road help you get experience before being get thrown to the wolf so you are more experienced to do trades and budget. On the road, you will most likely encounter your first Win case (“Pay Day”) that will net you more points for the end of the season. On the road, you will encounter the “Get a Coach” case (“Marriage”) in order to get some help. You can also fall on some Free Agents/Franchise Player (“Childs”) that will help you get more points as well, though could have some demand along the way. It’s important to remember though that you can always fall on some bad case like Tampering (“Taxes”) or Star Demand (“Child Education”) which might set you back.

My idea for a SHL themed board game is based on a game that I own called Journey Through Europe. This game is so old that the USSR still exists in it. The idea of the game is to travel to different European cities based on cards you have picked. You can go by road or by boat or by plane depending on how much you throw with the dice. This could easily be adapted to the SHL by using the USA and Canada instead. Each team in the SHL and SMJHL would have its own card and be a city on the board (except maybe West Kendall because no one knows where that is). Old team cities like Montreal and Seattle could have cards too to make more variety. You can add in a bunch of random cities as well to give more citites to travel through and make it more fun. One thing I don't like about the real game is you can't do anything to stop opponents so perhaps we could add some disasters or something into the game such as the entirety of Canada being hit by a blizzard. Also, in the real game, Tirana is impossible to reach except by plane and I would totally see this being Anchorage.

My SHL-ified board game is called "SHL Rookie of the Year", and has an overarching aim of creating your very own superstar player in the SHL and battling against your friends to see who will have the best rookie season. This game can be played by people of all ages, allowing for an "E for Everyone" rating, and is recommended for a group of 4-6 people.

The game starts with each player filling out their player information page where they can customize what their player looks like and what area of the game they will specialize in. You can alter your player's name, position, jersey number, height, weight, where they were born, their archetype, strengths, and weaknesses.

You then get drafted to a junior league team, randomized by each player selecting a playing card from 1-10, with each number being assigned to each team. Where depending on the prestige of the team that takes you, you can train regularly and get your player prepared for their very first SHL season, but be careful of overworking your player or else they may go inactive and become a bust.

Purchase now for more information on how the game works.

My new game would be called "Create a rookie". It's a card game where you draw a card out of a pile every round, and then decide whether you want to have it as an attribute on your player, what to change it for, and so on. There would be stat combo's, something along the lines of "3 Defense card and 2 Positioning card make your overall defense statistic rise by 10". You could maybe trade the cards with your opponents, so you could try to be helpful, or try to screw them over as hard as you could by holding good stats they would need for their player. Obviously, there would be a decent variety of builds available, from hard nosed defensive defenseman to finesse forwards that rely on their hands, some speedy boi two way wingers, PP specialist defenseman, goaltenders...the options are limitless. In the end of the game your cards will produce several scores that will rate your rookie and predict his future in SHL.

I think if I made an SHL board game it would be one where 3-6 players all compete to first reach the 2000 TPE mark. You'd roll dice to move around a board, and passing "Go" would award like 200 TPE each time.

There would be a community-chest like feature and chance cards where different random events occur.

+200 TPE: You finish points leader in the season.

+100 TPE: Your team wins the challenge cup. Take one challenge cup coin.

-100 TPE: Real life gets particularly hectic and you miss some PTs.

-400 TPE: You make off-colour remarks about women in hockey and boom yourself out of the league.

Maybe challenge cups would be a special tally in the game, where you want to collect as many as you can and there are different winners after a certain number of turns depending on how much TPE you've earned, how many challenge cups you've won, etc.

Thinking about it now, a lot of this just seems like Monopoly except the point of the game is to earn to a level of TPE ($) instead of making other players lose theirs. But there's room here for a cool game and I'd love to see someone come up with something that can actually be played. Maybe someday!

I think one of the better games that could have an SHL edition would be Munchkin. Munchkin already has way too many expansions so an SHL version would fit right into the current bloated mess. Now the biggest thing with Munchkin would be coming up with fun cards as equipment/bosses/events to represent the broad community of the SHL. I think there is enough history over 50 seasons to come up with some good stuff that everyone will enjoy.

Some examples include

The Augment: +3 Armor - You are now a robot capable of outlasting the competition.

Penknight Radio Broadcast: A horrible sound emits from the radio, choose one opponent to discard their current weapons.

Skates of CC2: Some say the best there ever was wore these. +1 to any side you play it on

You could easily have all SHL teams substitute for Class and have their SMJHL Team's substitute for Race in the game to add some extra flavor.

Me, to the product design team at Hasbro- "Listen men, I want to pitch you the idea of a lifetime. The game of LIFE, but with the power of the SHL brand attached to it. Give people the thrill of playing virtual hockey, right from home"

Them- "Sir how did you get in here?"

Me- "So players would start at the same area in normal LIFE, but instead of college or career, we have two new choices. Declare for the SMJHL draft early or spend time training up. Either way, we eventually end with them drawing a random team from a pick. Players go around the board, spinning the spinner just like usual. Doing PTs and Activity checks to earn TPE."

Them- "We have no idea what you are talking about and we are going to have to call security if you don't leave soon"

Me- "Eventually you get 'married' which obviously means getting drafted into the SHL. You can buy houses and get kids, clearly, that will be buying training and equipment. Keep spinning until you finally reach the end where you can choose if you will try to get in the SHL hall of fame or recreate which is the safer option..."

Them- "Yeah Jim you may need to call the cops this guy is crazy"

The game is exploding kittens, except instead of exploding kittens being the bad card in the deck, it's Simon T Hockey Simulator exploits. So, whenever someone draws that card, they either have to use a defuse kit (get HO to quickly make some rules that mitigate the usage of the exploit), or they die (force the SHL to move to another hockey sim). Along the way, there are some nice SHL-ified functional cards, such as the "Cameron Carter II" card, which lets you take a card from everyone else who has more cards than you (as a tax for more successful players unjustifiably winning awards when CCII gets snubbed). There's also the "New England Wolfpack" card where the player with the most cards must give up all of his functional cards in exchange for useless cards, because even though New England's players have high TPE counts, they're all still absolutely fucking useless. Lastly, there's the "Capped TPE" rule, where if a player forgets to draw a card on their turn, they're forced to draw 2 cards instead. This is to reflect updates being rejected if your capped TPE count isn't stated clearly in the post.

I'm basing this game around Cardfight Vanguard
For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a card game.... go look it up

So for the cards:
Grade 0: SMJHL Player+ Goalie equivalent
Grade 1: SHL 3rd Linemen + Goalie equivalent
Grade 2: SHL 2nd Linemen+ Goalie equivalent
Grade 3: SHL 1st Linemen + Goalie equivalent
Grade 4: SHL Legend + Goalie Equivalent

Like in vanguard the purpose of the game will be to get the other player to 6 damage or in this case, score 6 goals. The front row will be your forwards (with your vanguard being your center) while your backrow will consist of 2 defensemen and your goalie. The game will be pretty much like vanguard with skills, counterblast, soulblast, limit breaks, break rides, etc. However to add a bit of a twist you can't use cards in your hand to guard and a situation card will be drawn every attack phase which will say something like "2 forwards vs 2 forwards" Where you have to pit 2 of your forwards vs 2 of their forwards. The objective is to have a higher attack power than what you are going up against. The defensive side will have the added benefit of their goalies atk power being added to their combined attack while as offense can obviously use skills and have drive checks.

I will do a game of Simulation Hockey League Cards Against Humanity! It would be a game of great fun and maybe someone can add this to online internet stuff now that would be cool! Here are the cards we have:

Black Cards

______'s Multi Is ______
Oh no! The Chiefs just traded three first round picks for ________.
The Head Office just punished _________ for ___________.
The league would be so much better if _________ was added.
The site crashed again due to _______!
__________ was just caught for tampering!

White Cards
Lee
Eggy
Michael "The Augment" Izzy
gorlab
Head Office
getting your weight up
racist posts
tampering
40 Passing
Buffabros
toxic
BALLS
McZ

This would be a fun game now let us play it. We can play it on the ice or maybe replace it with Simon T until Franchise Hockey Manager is ready for us to use now that would be a great fun time! The teams can be teams of players and the first one to 10 black cards is the big winner.

I'd make it a simple board game like shoots and ladders. The numbered spaces basically correspond to how many points your team has, and the players would effectively be the teams. The team that finishes first gets the max amount of points, and at that point the season would end and everyone else would have their point totals. You could presumably do a playoff afterwards with the top teams, and whichever one wins that wins the Challenge Cup. The ladders would correspond to things that usually mean a team is streaking positively, like a hot goalie, a long stint of playing on home ice, playing against struggling teams, team psychologists sessions, etc. The shoots would correspond to negative things, like star players being injured, running into hot teams, a bad trade needed for cap space, a long away stint, a coach needed to be fired, etc. The board itself would get a thematic overhaul to include all sorts of SHL and hockey references to make it feel like it's embodying a journey through a season.
