Halifax players are murmuring to each other while milling around the locker room taking off their gear after a practice.
A DOOR BANGS OPEN.
A tall grey haired man in a dark suit strides inside the locker room with conviction etched on his face.
THICC CHEEZY
(Confusedly)
Hey Coach, what's going on?
Coach Ed Ball's brushes by with barely a glance at Thicc and moves to the center of the room. He stands atop a bench and waves his arms in a silencing gesture.
The locker room begins to silence. One of the players makes a silent joke to another and they both laugh.
Coach Ed Ball's notices and turns to glower at them.
COACH ED BALLS
Jokes? We are two days away from our biggest professional
day of your young career and you're telling jokes Kayhall?
AL KAYHALL
Sorry Coach, was just telling Karl that he...
He is cut off.
COACH ED BALLS
I don't care what you were telling Karl, save that for after
playoffs. Were not talking about jokes, not in Halifax, we've
been laughed off as a joke already for too long. Not anymore.
Coach Ed Ball's turns and surveys the team gathered around him.
COACH ED BALLS
Now I don't know what to tell you that you haven't already
heard before in movies and read on your twitter, but I know this.
He jumps off the bench and begins to walk slowly in a circle looking at all the players in the eyes.
COACH ED BALLS
We are two days away from the biggest battle in your young
professional careers. The last thing we are going to be doing
is making jokes. Let the other teams make jokes.
He pauses his walking dramatically. And then points aggressively at the ground.
COACH ED BALLS
(Shouts first word of every sentence) Here we are going to work. Here, we are going to grind. Here, we are going to bleed. And here, we are going to win. Hockey players begin nodding their heads. COACH ED BALLS
(Goes back to normal tone) You know, I am an old man. I know, forty isn't considered old to many these days, but it's true. I had my opportunities to seize glory out on the ice, and now I am too old to do it. I can't go out there any scratch and claw our way to victory for you. You have to do it yourselves, that fight has already been taken from me. Coach climbs back on top of the bench and slowly pans around looking at the team. COACH ED BALLS That's life though Halifax, things get taken from you, you lose friends, you lose family, you lose your youth, but you cannot lose. what. you. have. done! You can not lose, glory! You can not lose, your opportunity to seize that glory! Now I ask you! Will you sit here and make jokes? Or seize the glory in front of you right now? I choose glory, what do you say? Team gets to feet and act excited. COACH ED BALLS Glory! TEAM Glory! COACH ED BALLS Glory! For you! TEAM Glory! COACH ED BALLS Glory! For the Raiders! TEAM For the Raiders! COACH ED BALLS Glory, for Halifax! TEAM For Halifax! Coach Ed Balls springs from the bench and strides out of the locker room. END OF SCENE 720 words.
