Offseason Time-Waster #1 - Which SHL team has the best logo?
(This post was last modified: 03-20-2020, 04:48 PM by kenvald.)

I really like Manhattan Rage's logo, more so than any other in the league. It is just a genius logo. It contains famous Manhattan buildings, the subtle M, and of course the big bad-ass bull which are known to rage when they see red. Now, even though bulls "seeing red" have been debunked it still very much works on a logo just because of how wide-spread the "seeing red" idiom is.

While it is not the most original logo out there when looking at other sports and leagues, it still works really well. The logo gives of an aura of respect and pride and works amazingly well on both their home and away jerseys.

Another thing I think stands out with Manhattan's logo is just how simple it is in its complexity. Most graphic designers I have talked to and worked with say the same thing; that logos, be it a sports team or company logo, should be as simple as possible while still being easily recognizable. Even with all the things I mentioned in the previous paragraph, if you just quickly scan over the Manhattan logo without thinking about it, you are still very much able to take in the important parts of it. It is easily recognizable, and even if you remove all color from it you still clearly and quickly recognize it as Manhattan's logo. Even though there are other red and red-ish logos in the SHL, Manhattan's just have that little extra pop in their color. If we would line up all red logos in the league we would still be able to pick out Manhattan's logo among the rest quickly just because it draws attention.

There are a lot of great logos in the league but for the above stated reasons the number 1 logo is an easy choice for me.

The Specters have the best logo because it's purple. Purple is a sweet ass color. Plus it looks menacing and shit. You also have to give credit to a New Orleans team that DOESN'T some how tie it to fucking mardi gras.

I believe I was still there when it happened, but the New England Wolfpack rebranded logo from a few seasons ago was great, and is still the best looking I've seen so far. But a big shout out to the SMJHL, they are clearly the league to be for great looking logos!

My answer to the question is a simple one. Which team or teams has the colour purple in their logo. Based on there only being one team with the colour purple in their logo, the decision was quite simple, the New Orleans Specters have the best logo in the SHL.

I feel like it would be far too obvious for me to choose the one that I worked with karey to create and introduced to the league in Manhattan. So, while that is the undeniable correct answer, the second best logo to me is the Toronto North Stars. I just have always loved the design, implementing the star, the leaf, the tower. It's both simple and complex. Texas would be the third best to me, specifically the one with color, it just pops so well to me.

I think it's easy to say that the Calgary Dragons have the best logo. The Dragon looks so detailed, and the logo is just simplistic and professional while still looking cool. They also have the best emote on the site!

Can't really go with anything other than my own team, the LA Panthers. I just like everything about this logo. I like animal logos, and I really like the teal and orange.

Rage I have to give it to the Manhatten rage. I don't love a black and red color scheme, but I think that it was a great idea to use the "Charging Bull" statue as their inspiration, and incorporating the Empire state building was well received. Much better than the older bear logo.

Blizzard - I really like the Edmonton Blizzard's logo. Although it may sting to not put down my own team's logo, I really like the color scheme of it. The way the white blends into blue in the outer part of the fox is really smooth and aesthetically pleasing. The attention to detail on the fox is really nice and you can tell the artist has done research on foxes vs wolves in order to avoid confusion. This is something that I really appreciate as someone who is trying to get into art, and I think it's pretty cool.

The best SHL logo is clearly the Edmonton Blizzard. It is not even really a question. Yes, I am biased, and yes, that is the only reason I am picking the Blizzard but who cares, I want some TPE.

If I had to take a pick I'd go with the Manhatten Rage, it's among the more professional looking logos in the league (with the others going to Hamilton, San Fran, Edmonton, Tampa and L.A.) and is the one that makes the best use of negative space to form the M around the neck of the bull. I would have said LA just because I like it in every other way except for the issue of the two bumps around the ears of the panther that I can't get over. I dislike teams that just have some random badge with the team/city name on it. It feels unprofessional, minor-league and tacked on. Going to drop some basic feedback for everyone though

Manhattan: Probably the best executed and thought out the logo in the league, I'm not typically big on red as a primary colour but it fits a team like the bulls enough to overlook. Curious to know if the bull statue in the Financial District was the inspiration for the team name.
9/10
L.A.: You're so close to looking professional, please just fix up the outline on the ears and make the outline on the tail look more uniform. The nameplate is fine as it's well-integrated and the team is in a more non-traditional market.
8/10
San Fran: I like it. It's clean, professional-looking and I am into the purple/gold colour scheme. The non-symmetrical colouring helps in breaking up the look. I can't help but feel like there's just something missing in regards to identity though. Nothing really screams san-Francisco about it. Finding a way to maybe integrate an SF or something about the city into the logo would go a long way.
8/10
Tampa Bay: There's a lot I like about it, it's clean, sharp and aggressive looking. The nameplate isn't the worst and with the team in a non-traditional market, it's more excusable. Still has a minor-league vibe to it though
7.5/10
Hamilton: Not the most visually interesting with a rather dull colour scheme. That being said it's among the more professional-looking, believable logos in the league It's unfortunate that you now share a name with an IRL team, as small as they may be. My point in the intro applies here as I don't like the "STEELHAWKS" name badge.
7/10
Minnesota: My team! I think the logo is fairly professional and more or less speaks for itself despite lacking a bit of identity. I'm a big fan of the colour scheme and while I have my personal opinions regarding the branding as chiefs that doesn't change that the logo feels well done.
7/10
Winnipeg Jets: Maybe an unpopular opinion but I like so much about this. It looks pretty professional, has done the best job of integrating a name into the logo and has a great colour scheme. Unfortunately, it's overcomplicated, You gotta think about a 5-year-old being able to draw the logo of their favourite team
7/10
West Kendall: It could use a bit of work in regards to making it look professional but the concept is among my favourites. It suffers from the same issue as Toronto in looking a bit like a shoulder patch though
6.5/10
Edmonton: This is the best one with a name badge since they actually did something with it that isn't just it being there with some text. I like the colour scheme but all in all the smoothness of the wolf's lines doesn't match up at all with the sharp, cold nameplate. Something about it looks like a minor-league team
6/10
Texas: Wait, this isn't an SMJHL logo? Okayy then. Aside from being the most minor-league looking of the logos, it's probably one of the better-done ones on a technical aspect. It just looks so generic and I'm not really sure what purpose the tacked on hockey sticks provide
6/10
Buffalo Stampede: Like the concept, could use a bit more work giving it more depth. The 2 colours make the logo look pretty flat and blah.
6/10
Chicago: It's okay, nameplate once again does not add to anything. The text is also not lined up to the centre of the mobster's tie which irks me. There's something here, it just needs some work. Also, I get a strong urge to yield to oncoming traffic when I look at it.
6/10
New England: It's... okay, fine. I've seen better, I've seen worse. Has the nameplate issue to an even worse extent as the "NEW CIIGLAND WOLFPACK", feels a bit minor league. I appreciate the effort to make the shield in the background a non-standard shape. Is among the least professional looking in the league.
5/10
Toronto: It looks like a shoulder patch. Not a fan of having a monument of the city as the primary part of a logo. Imagine if a NY team had the twin towers as a logo. It's one thing to change a shoulder patch, having to completely re-brand your team in that scenario would be a matter of poor planning. Otherwise, it looks clean enough and at least incorporates some clever ideas
5/10
New Orleans: It's a shame I don't like this one as I love the purple and black colour scheme. It feels like a poorly done junior team with only two colours and no sense of shading or styling. Again not a fan of you needing to announce you're the "SPECTERS", the logo should be able to speak for itself. Integrating the city logo in your shape is nice but it just creates blank space by being poorly integrated. Among the best concepts in the league with some of the worst execution
4.5/10
Calgary: There's a lot going on here and not much of it is positive. There are issues with it being too busy, scaling being weird and the name badge being there despite being a city with a long hockey history. It also looks like a giant head attached to a small body.
3/10

I am completely bias and believe its the Renegades. So for the sake of the exercise I will pick my number 2. I am a big fan of the LA Panthers logo. I think its something about the way the teal and orange play off of one another, and the logo itself is super clean and simple. I don't like things that are overly complex, and their's isn't.

Oh it definitely has to be Texas.  Renegades Renegades Renegades I just like the dark colors; it's sinister and it really is different than every other SHL and SMJHL logo. Black is such an underrated color, and it is very clean on jerseys, logos, and other paraphernalia in sports.

It goes without saying that the Buffalo Stampede has the best logo. Buffalo's are amazing animal and there is nothing stronger than a Stampede.

If you have ever seen the running of bulls, just imagine a hoard of Buffalo stampeding towards you. The look in the Buffalo's eye as its charging towards you from your glowing screen instills fear in every man.

FHM6 should be worried...
