Maybe if the committee didn’t make egregious choices, yet again, then people wouldn’t be critical of the choices every year. At a certain point, when the committee is getting slated for the choices they make every year, it’s not the rest of the site, it’s the committee.

Ever notice how the J awards committee very rarely, if ever, gets blasted for our picks? That’s because we make intelligent choices that make sense. Crazy how that works though

There’s so few people that care about minors awards comparatively to majors awards so it’s hard to compare the two.

I also just checked your awards show thread and you’re getting blasted in there so I don’t really know what you’re talking about honestly.

can you not complain for once? geez man
you're not helping by blasting the SHL committee for not making "intelligent choices" when the J committee doesn't make the best selections as well (for example, not nominating Darnell Johnson for any award in S50 when he was arguably one of the best defensemen in the league is quite simply absurd)

That's not true--there's a rookie backup goalie upset he was left off things (who I've messaged explaining more context on the process) and a GM who wants his rookie to be a finalist for the Anrikkanen, and that's about it.

I'm making no comment about the quality of these SHL nominations, only defending my team for the good work we've done and continue to do.

Wow! Never thought I'd see the day I'm nominated for an award. I'm honoured for this nomination, and being in the same category as Lil' Manius and Gibbles! Bouchard and Kandinsky are both great players as well that could have easily gotten the nod ahead of me!

Let me just say regarding the Dar trophy, that this one was the subject of some hefty internal discussions as well and the Committee didn't really come to a final conclusion on how to deal with this complicated award in the new sim engine yet, as evidenced by the very split voting. I also somewhat agree in that I think that the Nominees we came up with aren't great, only one of them really fits the criteria I have for the Award. In fact my voting criteria seems to have different substantially from that of the rest of the committee, of the 5 people I nominated 4 didn't even get a single nomination from anyone else. I hope and think that there will be some more discussion about this in the near future and that we will have a much clearer picture next season. There has been some broader discussion about the Dar Trophy in general too, so even bigger changes could be on the horizon as well.

However, I don't think any of this makes your tone in here justified @39alaska39, especially when every season your complaint about the Awards seems to be that one of your teammates got snubbed, while your own bias is blatantly obvious. Saying "xy should have been nominated" is always a pretty easy thing to claim too, the much more inconvenient question is: Over who? Who should have been eliminated in favor of your guy? In case of Vent, who I won't discount since he would indeed have been a valid nominee, his improvement basically comes down to a jump in points by 20 and thats it. None of his other stats, especially the defensive metrics, were very impressive and he also only was a middle-of-the-pack guy on his own team even with all this improvement. So who should he have replaced, the guy who improved by 27 points to become a top-5 scorer in the league? The guy who increased by 20 points and was also amongst the leagues best scorers and led his team in both points and +/-? No, the only guy who he even would have a case over is Sharp (15 point jump, 2nd among team forwards in +/-, good GA/TA ratio) and even then it's close and a valid, open discussion and not a "total snub". Oh and by the way that doesn't even take into account someone like von Otter who improved by 24 points and was among both his teams and the leagues best scorers, who also missed out. So yeah, it's not nearly as easy as you make it sound.

Oh and I love the irony in this comment...

Career best of 14 before this year, but sure. Shows the amount of research y’all do

... because his previous career best wasn't 14, that was just his last year. Shows the amount of research you do I guess?

The Awards Committee is hard, for sure. It's damn near impossible to catch every one who could be nominated for something.

It'd be cool if the committee had like, a representative from each team on it. That way they can present the other members people they may have missed. You can counteract this by also preventing them from officially nominating for their own team, in an attempt to dull biases. Once the three finalists are established, they can vote however they'd like though.

Just an idea to help people, in this case Vent, not get missed.

Awards will become easier to manage when the index gets upgraded.

Idk exactly how it works today.

I’m going to be honest, as both a former head and a current committee member, having a rep from each team would be a nightmare. There are already issues with awards such as the Dar and the Bojo having too broad of nominees to make them really a true winner. Imagine the ballots going from 8ish to 16? Sometimes you can have too much information and this is a case where you’ll run into this problem. Small committees are always the way to go with awards.

In the case of Vent, he wasn’t missed. Alaska and I had a very heated discussion about it. Vent had a great season but he wasn’t even the biggest improvement at his own position. I used my player as an example. Cleary went from 1 goal and 13 points to 15 goals and 36 points. Vent went from 14 to 35 as Alaska previously mentioned. If anything, Cleary was snubbed and considering I had the power to throw my own name in, I don’t really think he was a snub. Bouchard, McShotty And Sharp were all very worthy noms. The Richan was always going to be a mess because of the sim engine change.
