S54 PT #1 - A New Focus

While Rikard had a decent outing last season, increasing his point totals from his rookie season of 5g-9pts to 11g-29pts, Rikard still felt his defensive game was not where he wanted it to be. He also felt that, taking on a bigger role in the club and playing more minutes, his stamina was not up to par, even on 3rd line and PK duties. This off-season, Rikard focused on his more on his defensive game and his stamina, ensuring that he will be ready whenever coach decides he needs to rely on Rikard’s game. Rikard will be once again asked to anchor the third line, alongside rookie Ryu Jones and John Forfeit. His well-rounded 2-way game will help his linemates, especially Ryu Jones in being defensively sound while still being able to contribute offence when asked upon. With the departure of star defenceman Alex Petrenko, the rebuilding Outlaws will need all the help they can get on the backend, led by Emilia Bergman.

Ruslan Zaporozhets has been called up by the Toronto North Stars for S54, this presents that challenge, slash big moment for most young players. THE big jump. That said the hot new rookie is taken to his new role of Garbage Collector rather than Sniper. When asked after his first game, Zapo was quoted as saying "Well back when I was in St. Louis I was able to use my size, relative speed, and skill to put pucks in the net. However I am not as fast, nor as skilled, or even as big here in the SHL. But I get to play with two of the best here in Toronto and I figured if I just keep my stick on the ice and hang near the net, good things will happen" In spite of what he said, he scored his first goal on his first shot of his first game, and has been a regular physical presence to boot.

Regression hit hard this offseason, losing 160+ tpe, and I took it all out of mental toughness and stamina. Stamina might hurt a bit, but with Saarinen coming in hopefully they can ease some of the load. I did end up bringing stamina back up to 20 anyways so I guess that wont matter. My blocker, glove, low shots, reflexes, positioning are all still at 20 and will not go below 20 for a long time, maybe 5 or so seasons hopefully. I am poised to have a nice long career (sorry prettyburn) and hopefully win some trophies? Really a cup would be nice, it's all I want. Anyways back to what I trained, really I just bumped stamina up, so worked on stamina exclusively. Not sure what's next, do I bother moving toughness up again or work on rebound or something else that's lower. That might be a good option

Going into this offseason my goal remains the same as it was going into last offseason. I want to be a player on the ice that is a constant offensive threat. I want to be able to use my stick and puckhandling skills to embarrass defenses and put myself either in prime scoring opportunity or to consolidate the defense onto myself so that I can move the puck out to a teammate for an easy goal. I want to be a guy who can move like Datsyuk on the ice and have highlight reel dekes that end up making anyone that tries to stop me look silly. I will not eschew my defensive responsibilities however and that was the bulk of the training that I have done thus far. Working on getting my stick into passing lanes to disrupt puck movement and make sure I'm in the right position to shut down opposing play more times than not.

I definitely changed up Brady McIntyre's build big time. It became pretty clear to me that the Edmonton Blizzard needed a little more offense than we were able to muster up if we wanted to take home the Challenge Cup this season, and personally I would have liked to see Brady get more points.

Brady made a jump from being a two way defenseman with a skating focus to being a playmaker. Despite being fairly deep into regression Brady's offensive game actually improved this offseason. He's now maxed for offensive awareness and his passing, puckhandling and getting open are all at 18. Although he's still a good shooter I decided to only bring his shooting range up to 15, I don't feel like it really needs to be any higher than that. Since the build change I decided to work on his defense a little as well despite him being an offensive player. His defensive read and checking are both 17 now but I left his skating around 15s. Next up is getting his stamina really high.

The switch to FHM allowed me to have a little more fun with my build than I would have otherwise been able. Coming into the league on this particular recreate, I had opted to create a defensive-minded player. In the past, this had always tended to go poorly for players: although STHS had a utility for defensive defencemen, and they could help influence a team for the better, most of the work they did was buried in the play-by-play logs, which by their very nature were too painful to read through for anyone to really bother with them. FHM on the other hand has a wealth of easily accessible stats, making it much more rewarding on the face of it. So, I didn't change my build that drastically, but I definitely have a long way to go in figuring out how the various attributes work together. It's not going to be as simple as player building was in the past, but that might be the best thing about it: at the end of it, I hope to have a player that is largely unique to me, rather than one that came copy-pasted from every other player before me.

Maybe the biggest change for my player himself, having only been an STHS player for less than a season, is that I'm now able to build more specifically into something like shot-blocking, rather than having one huge, catch-all defensive stat. I'm also a little more confident in increasing my player's physicality now, given the degree to which the previous engine could effectively punish teams for players with too high a checking total compared to their discipline.

Going into this season, I knew that I was going to be a core contributor for the Vancouver Whalers with the departures of Francois Breton and Marcus Ohlsson, so I had to really step up my game. I didn't need to use my redistribution for more than swapping a 12 and a 13 in Positioning and Defensive Read, but I did unbank to 425 and that meant a lot of decisions about how to improve in the offseason. Last season I scored 27 points, but I wanted to become an even better scorer this time around, so I upped Screening and Getting Open by two points each to 9 and 13, but the real investments were on defense. I wasn't really happy with my defensive game in S53, so I upped Stickchecking and Defensive Read a fair bit from where they were to 13 each, with small investments into shot-blocking and even faceoffs just in case I ever needed to take one. Finally, there was the matter of getting stronger and faster to hold my own against other teams' top defensive pairings and forward lines. The Stamina buff to a starting level of 11 helped, but that doesn't cut it for the minutes I'd be playing, so I put even more TPE into that to get to 13. Finally, the weight and speed training in the offseason helped me get my Strength and Acceleration to levels that I'm happier with. I'm locked into this build now, but once I unbank my next goals are to work with my GMs to make my build as useful as it can be.

My build didn't get a drastic change from last season but did get a little bit of a retooling over the off season. Last season was disappointing, putting up my worst numbers since my rookie season in points but my build generally seemed to be good so the focus this off season was on cleaning it up and fixing little things that were making me underperform. Some added strength and stamina should help me out this season while some points were removed from some less important attributes to go into areas like checking so that i can have a better all around contribution as well as point performance. It seems to be working so far as I'm off to a start of 6 points in 7 games. The aim is to be able to go at least ppg with this new build and so to be hovering right around the ppg mark 7 games into the season is promising and gives me hope that I'll finally be able to have a true breakout season and not stuck in the not-bad-but-not-good 40-45 point range.

Well, this was very hard offseason because of hard trainings. I want to get better and this is the right time for that, I'm 3rd seasoner and that is a little bit scary because I need to upgrade my skills to be ready for SHL hockey. Coach said that I need to be myself but it's hard when shitty things are happening outside. I trained hard and I hope that I will be one of the leaders of team. Preseason games let me see that I'm good and I just need to find the easier way to help team earn points. This is one of my last seasons here and this is the right time to show what I am and what I can do with my hands and legs. Just need to keep calm and play hockey. We are team and we need to play like a team.

I'm Slip McScruff, the player and I will give you my player's perspective.  I was not asked to focus on anything new because I'm already the best at what I do.  One day I walked into the gym and it felt like I had a bit more stamina than usual, but besides that I'm just going to get right back out there crushing nerds. 

Last season, I crushed it on hits and shot blocks while keeping my PIMs down.  This season, I want to keep on that same trajectory for hits and blocks, but I'd like to also tune up on take aways and +/-.  I think the +/- will naturally come because my team has a lot of young talent growing into their roles, but the take aways are something I can work out on my own.

However, I think the best thing would be for me to focus a bit on the offensive traits that I need to support Adam Barron on our top pair.  I'm already decent at Passing and Puckhandling, but I could take those to the next level and feed pucks to Barron who is highly skilled at getting open and sinking the biscuit.
