S54 PT #1 - A New Focus

Name Redacted worked with his coaching staff almost every minute of every day of the offseason in order to bring himself up into solid shape for season 54.  He knew that he was on the right track, even though the wheels fell off at the end of the last season.  He pushed really hard in order to get his reflexes to a high level, which would allow him to react quickly to snap up more pucks.  He also worked heavily on his already excellent positioning, which should allow him to predict better and not be caught off guard.  Finally, he worked on his on-ice play, covering his low corners and five more quickly with his pads and paddle.  He’s hoping that this 350 build will work out for the team this year.  If he can replicate his success from early last year, Vancouver has a good shot at making it through to the playoffs this season.

Igor Volkov was mostly content with his build, although his coach wanted him to focus on agility more in the offseason. As a result, he decided that for this week's training, he would spend his TPE on his agility skill to improve his play style. The offseason however ended earlier than expected, and so Igor was left without as much improvement as his coach would have cared for. As for real life, my head is currently very fogged up and I really don't have much to say, the rest of this is just filler to get to 150 words. Ninety-nine hours of skills left to train. Ninety-hours of skills. Spend an hour improving a skill, ninety-eight hours of skills left to train. Ninety-eight hours of skills left to train, ninety-eight hours of skills. Spend an hour improving a skill, oh wait, 150 words!

The difference between what my coaches in Buffalo asked for as opposed to Winnipeg is night and day, to be honest. In Winnipeg, I was complementing a young up and coming Darrow like defender in Adam Barron with defensive defenseman skills. So we trained for that and I ended up last season setting the Jets team record for shots blocked in a game with 12, finishing with 111 overall. This offseason, now back in Buffalo, my coaches asked me to focus less defensive defending and more within an all-round style of play.

Something that utilizes both my passing and speed with the bravery to lay down and block a shot. My coaches drilled into my head this offseason that they feel I shouldn't be typecast as other trophy winners are. For instance, winning the Bojo as I did means I should settle in for a life as a defensive, stay at home defender. They took the time this offseason to ensure that I explored not only that side of my game but other intangibles that will complement Scoop and Darrow and I am looking forward to a season of two way play.

There has been a lot of talks during the offseason between the coaches an me. We did purely last seasons and so there was much to talk about. We also talked about changing things in my style of playing the game. They told me that we don't have the quality at the moment to let a rookie play like he wants. All offense no defense, doesn't worked well for us. So I got told to work on my defense much more. Because if we doesn't let them get so many chances and play a good defense game, the opportunities to score goals will come slightly. So we start working a little bit more on positioning, stick checking, defensive read and also on our physical skills, because you need to be more than in a good shape to play all game long a good defensive game. And I had to promise that I will get my aggression more under control. I had to many pims last season.

as a GM we had a couple people to do build changes, with the focus on getting better. So one of them is to make his build more cost friendly, and elimate some of the wastefull TPE in his build, and reapply it to some better parts of the build. Another one we did was to change his build compleetely to match what our team wanted to be going forward. I personalyl changed my build slightly along with regression to remain basically the same player, but more offensive. I think most players would change their build for the betterment of the team overall, as long as its still in their control. our genral point of view is that if you want to build a certain way you have the right to build the player that you want. And we will build around that, not the other way around. We will be good without compromising those morals

My original FHM player was focused a lot on all physical attributes and a lot on defensive attributes. What was lacking was any sort of offensive skill. I think this led to very little offensive zone pressure when i was on the ice as my line wasn’t able to gain the zone and keep it. While my defensive skills were good, if my line wasn’t able to keep the puck we would just get hemmed in our own zone. My game rating was okay for the season but the advanced metrics showed that my current build wasn’t working well. With much testing, it seems like balancing out your offensive and defensive stats so one way isn’t lopsided seems to be the best move. There are also certain physical attributes that affect the performance more than others. Trying to pin point which ones to use was the key to freeing up extra tpe for me to sink into offensive stats.

A busy Offseason for White Goodman. After a somewhat rough rookie season, Goodman went to work on better positioning himself as well as improving his recovery reflexes. While most players went on to target Roles they could fill, Goodman has the only role he can play. That of a goaltender. S53 Was a rough Season for White goodman. After going 7 wins and 33 losses it was a hard offseason to face but White Got to work right away. “ The 3.89 goals against average was what really upset me. I don’t think I’ve ever had it that high in my life” said goodman when asked why he went right into training the day after the season ended. The Texas goalie coach has been all over Goodman trying to work on Positioning most of all. The reality is this should help Goodman elevate his game and start to make an impact on the game like we all know he can.

Player's perspective:
My coaches asked me to focus more on getting open to help make more of an offensive difference, and for the defensive side of things, I'm going to work on blocking more shots, getting in the right lanes, and work on my stickchecking. Training this offseason was mainly to do with those latter two things, but I'd like to have more of a presence near the net to help make a different there too. This season, I'd like to be a more offensive and defensive threat to the other team and focus harder on being a two-way player, which means I won't be altering my role too much, just better, faster, stronger. Everything needs to be better this season and moving forward, because I've only got a couple more seasons in me before I start breaking down physically. I'm still feeling the fight, but you know, there's only so much you can do before age catches up to you as a hockey player in the SHL.

Quote:With a season on FHM in the books and a free redistribution gifted by HO for the offseason, what did you decide to change about your player build? Did you drastically change your build from last season? If so, why? Are you going to be trying to fit into a new role this season? What did you learn from last season's pilot run?

So, while I appreciate the free redistribution of TPE handed down to us by the Head Office of the SHL, McCarthy had an amazing season. He was 5th in points for defenseman and had the 2nd most takeaways of any player in the league. He had over 35 points, not a lot of PIMs, and honestly, was likely the strongest two-way defenseman, hands down, in the entire league. He was also able to bring home the Bojo Biscuit Award for the top Defensive Defenseman in the league last season, which was impressive for a player that is not built all that defensively. He's built to play both ends of the ice, something he does insanely effectively. That being said, it's hard to change anything about my build, except the part where I hit regression and had to lose a bit of TPE because I'm old. McCarthy is a Top 5 Defenseman in the league (Bojo win and no All-Star team? Pfft.) And likely the best two-way player on the ice in the entirety of the SHL!

This offseason Olli Saarinen worked on just about everything - the transition from SMJHL goalie to a back up in the big leagues is a tough one, and he had a lot of work to do to make sure he was ready to step onto the ice. Thankfully his time in juniors had prepared him well and there were a lot of skills that he'd learned the basics of and just needed a big league coach to help him really see improvement in (yay banked TPE!). His biggest focus was in making sure he'd have the endurance to play at the SHL level, even if he knew he'd be seeing less ice time overall. After that, he did some specific training in all of his various save positions as well as his reflexes and positioning. And lastly, he spent some time talking to Cain, who he'd be backing up, to try and think through the new difficulties of playing in the SHL and make sure he'd be mentally prepared to face them.

After last season, I don't think I actually changed very much about my players build. The extra TPE from the base increase to agility didn't actually help much, but I won't complain about free TPE. I've lowered my agility a little bit and instead focused more heavily on my balance. My checking, defensive read, and stamina continue to be high and I've elevated my strength a little because that's what Hamilton did and they won soooo? My offensive read is currently at 18, soon to be 19 and so I'm excited to see how that will progress my player. Hotdog ? says I'm a 20 in the TWF position. Personally I don't really know what that means, but I do know that 20 is the highest so that's super sick. In addition to just me talking about my stats, the removal of the cap will give me a few extra TPE a season, guaranteeing that I will hit 2k TPE before regression.

After talking with the GM and coach, we all agreed that my role on the team will be a garbage collector goal scorer in front of the net. I worked really hard this offseason working primarily on my hand-eye coordination, stick handling, and strength. My personal trainer gave me a ton of new workouts to help me develop those three skills. The workouts were a variety of off-ice and on-ice workouts, some examples are stick handling through obstacle courses, tipping pucks in front of the net, and a load of weight training in the gym. For this upcoming season, I am hoping to light the lamp a few more times as well as keep out of the penalty box. It will be challenging moving to this new role because it is not one I have ever filled before on a team, but I am excited to improve and do my best to get Carolina far in the playoffs this season.

[Image: image0.jpg][Image: bordon.png]

My coaches did not ask me to work on anything specific however the Jets have had an issue with scoring this past season, and I felt that I should put more points into my skating and offensive abilities for the start of this new season. For instance last season I only had about 36 points. I really wanted to at least have 40 points as this is a decrease from the season before last. In the offseason Shepard worked really hard like his old days getting some SHL coaching and improving all attributes of his skating as well as becoming a better passer and offensively minded player. With Nick Brain being more of a scoring two-way forward I thought it best that Shepard’s role of being more of an elite defensive forward be changed a bit. With these changes and off season training Shepard might be able to fill out a setup man role alongside his defensive play for Brain to score more.

From a user perspective, I didn't really want to change up my build too much. I've been happy with how Maxime's career as a passer has gone. Topping out the league in assists last season felt pretty good, even if I did get snubbed by the awards committee by proxy because there isn't an award for that (plot twist: there should be). I've popped up some of the stats that I think he was lacking in, but honestly at the top end it starts to get pretty difficult to expand and figure out how to go with the build. Different stats need to be balanced out and past seventeen it's super expensive to be elite. It feels really good to drop those heavy points and max things out, but in the long run its it's better to be an all around player in my book. And I think I have managed that pretty well with Maxime so far.

This offseason I've spent the majority of my time working on the defensive part of my game. Me and my coaches agreed that defense was the weakest part of my game so that would be the best, I really improved my Checking, Positioning, Hitting and Shot Blocking. But not only did I upgrade my defense I also worked on my offense upgraded my screening, puck handling and passing, which so far has been paid dividends so far this year as I already have 6 points this season. This season Wolfpack management told me they would switch up my role this season going from a sniper to a counterattacking forward and playing on the second line of the power play. I'm very excited to see my role expanding on the team and hopefully it will allow me to make up for what was a terrible postseason from me. Now I just have to keep putting in the work and continue to make myself better.
