Newfoundland Berserkers (5-1-1) vs Carolina Kraken (3-2-1)

Introduction
It’s time for an Eastern Conference match-up between two up-and coming teams, the Carolina Kraken and the Newfoundland Berserkers. The Berserkers have started the season off guns a blazing with a 5-1-1 record coming into this evening’s game. The Kraken on the other hand have been good coming into tonight with a 3-1 record. Tonight’s goalie match-up features two star goaltenders in Cale Amundsen (3-1-1, 1.75 GAA) for Newfoundland and Frans Eller (2-1-1, 1.97 GAA) for the Kraken.

Will the Berserkers be able to keep their hot start going, or will the Kraken by able to smother up the Berserkers offense and cool them down?

First Period
Here in Newfoundland there are 3985 fans in the stands for this match-up! The puck is dropped and the Kraken waste no time in attacking the Berserkers end early. The two teams continue to go back and forth with chances, with both goalies standing tall up to the mid-way point of the period. The Berserkers began to assert their dominance in the Kraken’s zone. Harrington was doing some great work in the corner to get the puck to Klompus who passed it off to Birdstrom, who got away from Vitecek, but is tripped up by Vitecek and a penalty to the Kraken is called at 10:55. The Berserkers work the powerplay in the zone for the first minute of the penalty, but no luck. They dump the puck deep, and Minamino retrieves it from behind the net, and finds Steve Harrington streaking in and it ends up behind Frans Eller for the 1-0 Berserkers lead on the powerplay at 10:55! The two teams go back and forth for the rest of the period with Newfoundland coming out on top after 1.

1 Berserkers - 0 Kraken

Second Period
The Kraken win the draw, but the Berserkers cause a turnover and set back up in the Kraken’s zone.  Frans Eller is forced to try and stop the momentum of the Berserkers by causing a few faceoffs so his team can get it together. The Kraken eventually get the puck out of their zone, but only as far as the Berserkers blue-line. The Berserkers come back for a second wave, PJ Souppan picks up the buck for the Berserkers, the Kraken appear to be on a change with Jimmy Wagner the only Kraken out, but he is trying to slow Souppan down. Souppan found Clean Andrei Kostitsyn who found himself alone on a breakaway who shoots the puck into the net for a 2-0 Berserkers lead! Later, the Berserkers find themselves in the Kraken's zone again, after a quality Kraken chance that was stopped by Amundsen. Tinke Jutila stopped a Kraken ring-around the boards. The puck ends up in the corner where Minamino and Van Dijk battle, but Minamino comes out with it and finds Jukka Timonen in the slot, who fires it into the net for the 3-0 Newfoundland lead at 9:07. The Kraken begin to find another gear and start attacking the Berserker zone but with no luck as they head into the final period down 3 goals.

3 Berserkers - 0 Kraken

Third Period
The period begins with a Newfoundland faceoff win. The teams go back and forth some more. The Kraken get themselves in a bit of penalty trouble again after a neutral zone turnover by Zelma Zuntnere which forced Ambacas Cuddles into a tripping penalty to stop the Berserkers from going the other way. On the powerplay, the Berserkers set themselves up in the Kraken’s zone. Matthew Forrester works hard in the corner to come up with puck, and passed it to Jack Klompus who is waiting in the high slot. Klompus takes a pick shot, Guy LeGrande is screening infront and got a piece of it, and it trickles behind Eller for the 4-0 lead for Newfoundland on the powerplay at 5:03 of the third period. The Berserkers get themselves into a little bit of penalty trouble with Tinke Jutila getting the door for goaltender interference after a strong drive to the net. The Kraken set themselves up in the Berserker zone and get a few chances but no luck. After a battle infront that ended up with the puck out of play a faceoff is won by the Kraken back to Adam Friedland. Friedland walks the blueline and finds Dwight King. King heads to the front of the net, and Friedland dishes off to Jimmy Wagner, who takes a quick snap shot, that hits King infront and its behind Cale Amundsen to get the Kraken on the board with their own powerplay marker but still Newfoundland leads 4-1 at 11:29 of the third. The game stays that way as the Berserkers continue with their hot 6-1-1 start to the season and Carolina fall to 3-3-1 on the season.

Final Score
4 Berserkers - 1 Kraken

Three Stars

Tonights third from Newfound Land, Clean Andrei Kostitsyn!  Andrei had one goal tonight, however that one goal was an important one as it was the game-winning goal. Andrei had an active night around the night, and definitely could have more the one goal!

Tonights second star once again from the Berserkers, Jukka Timonen! Jukka played a solid defensive game tonight, keeping the Kraken to the outside of the ice, and playing a physical game. To top it off Timonen added a goal tonight as well!

Tonights first star... Ryuuji Minamino!! Ryuuji may have not scored tonight but he played a critical part in the offensive attack for the Berserkers tonight picking up 2 assists and driving the play whenever he was on the ice, an all-around strong game.

Between the Pipes

Before this game even started, people were talking about two players, the goalies. Cale Amundsen is currently posting an impressive (3-1-1, 1.75 GAA) for Newfoundland. Whereas Frans Eller (2-1-1, 1.97 GAA) is posting very similar numbers for the Kraken. Who would break first in this battle? Would one team be able to get out to a big lead, or was it going to be a close game? While fortunately for Amundsen, he was able to put another strong game. Where Eller, would take a hit to his numbers, however when you face 40 shots you can't blame him at all. We will have to see how these goalies stack up next, in hopefully a closer game!

Bodies were Bruised

Well when you look at the box score, there a couple of numbers to notice, but the hit totals definitely stand out! We knew this game was going to be a physical one when a fight broke out just 1 minute into the game when Adam Friedland fought Renji Atake. On top of that fight, he would also add two more penalties, tripping and interference. Were these penalties due to a rough game, or just falling behind and trying to play a physical game. By the time this game finish, Carolina would finish with 16 hits, and Newfoundland would have 23 hits! Both teams were throwing their body back and forth, and will be needing an ice bath after this one!

Comment 1

Little Minute Men

For the Carolina Kraken who lost this game we see RW Zelma Zuntnere at the bottom of the minutes played list. Zelma finished with 8:12 of even strength time played. With 2 blocked shots and 1 shot on goal they were -1 on the night. Couldn't get much going but no one could as this game was mostly controlled by Newfoundland. Zelma finished with a 58 game rating. For the winners we see on Newfoundland Lassi Suhohen finished with 8:01 of time on ice. The center had a huge impact though with 1 goal, 1 assist and a +2 rating. They had the 13 shifts but the made them count and finished with a 58 game rating on the night.

Comment 2

Party Starter

Center Mats Marner got the party started scoring his first of the season and the first of the game just 1:26 in. It was an even strength goal assisted by PBJ Souppan. This goal was early and it set the tone for the night as Marner and the Berserkers won this game 4-1. Marner finished the night with just the 1 goal but 4 shots total. He also was credited with a blocked shot and 4 hits in 16:59 of time on ice. Marner was very solid with a 66 game rating and he also went 9-6 in the faceoff dot to help his team with puck possession.

Comment 3

Bad Boy

The Bad Boy of the game is from the Carolina Kraken - Adam Friedland. He had 9 PIMs on the night as he dropped the gloves to fight Renji Atake just 1:04 into the game. He really fired up his team with this fight but he was rocking people all night and couldn't keep it clean. Friedland took a tripping penalty at 2:05 of the 2nd period as well as an interference call at 15:38 of the 3rd. He will need to try and keep a few more hits clean and take a few less minors this year. But keep the fights coming! He finished with over 20 minutes of ice time even though he was in the box for 9 minutes. He had 2 shots but with his 6:20 of PP time he couldn't get anything done. Finished with a 49 Game Rating and 0 points.

Comment 1: Hot Goalie Duel

Both Cale Admunsen and Frans Eller have shone in the early games of the season, each sporting only 1 loss and a sub-2.00 GAA. Amundsen, coming off of an Anrikkannen-worthy performance last season, is continuing his dominant ways this far into the season, with a 3-1-1 record, a shutout, and a 1.75 GAA. Not to be outdone, Eller, who has appeared in less games so far this season for the Kraken, is is sitting at 2-1-1, and has a polished 1.97 GAA. These records point to an intense goalie duel and a low-scoring game, but the edge on paper here goes to the Dutchman over the Dane, as Amundsen has a slight edge in all stats and has demonstrated them over a slightly larger number of games played.

By the time the game had ended, Amundsen had proven this prediction true, and while both goalies played well, Eller ultimately let in 4 goals to Amundsen's 1, and the Berserkers came away with the win and continued their rampage to start the season. Overall, Newfoundland has now found themselves at a 6-1-1 record, and Carolina falls behind the chase with a 3-3-1 overall record after tonight.

- 215 words

Comment 2: Playing spoiler

Well, you can't let Amundsen get away with it every game, can you? After leading the game two periods in at a commanding 3-0, and going through most of the 3rd without letting many chances go by, Dwight King ultimately broke the potential shutout for Cale Amundsen. A goaltender interference call lets the Kraken set up on the powerplay, with Adam Friedland setting up King in the zone, who fakes a shot before passing to Jimmy Wagner. Wagner's shot deflects off of King, and the redirection proves to be enough to squeak by Amundsen to make it 4-1.

Comment 3: Minamoto's Clean passing

With two assists on the night, and the only skater to achieve two points in tonight's game, Ryuuji Minamino earns the top honours as first star of the game. Minamino was pivotal in the opening goal in the first period, retrieving a loose puck from behind the Kraken net and threading it through traffic to Steve Harrington, who makes no mistake point-blank to fire it past Eller. Minamino, in a similar display of skill as before, beats out the Kraken van Dijk for another loose puck, and this time sets up Jukka Timonen in the slot, another excellent pass to a high-danger area that leads to a goal for the Berserkers, and makes it 3-0.

Fight Night

By the time fans had sit down with their beers and dogs sparks had flown and Renji Atake fought Adam Friedland just 64 seconds into the game.  The fight itself wasn’t much to watch, just that it happened so early both in the game and in the first matchup between these two teams.  Normally you’d need some sort of bad blood, but I guess not for these two loose cannons.  What I’m mostly curious about is the spark for the fight.  Friedland didn’t seem to do anything and Atake came after him like he’d said something about Mrs. Atake.  This will certainly be a story to watch for the remaining matchups between these two teams.

Words 116

Penalties for days

Speaking of the fight basically on the puck drop what the heck was going on with the penalties both teams kept taking.  No one seemed immune and the bench in the sin bin didn’t even have time to cool off before someone else went to sit down.  Adam Friedland led the charge with three penalties for nine minutes, but truthfully I’m more impressed with Steve Harrington’s effort to get a hooking and a roughing penalty in the first seven minutes of the second period.  There is just no place in hockey for the kind of wreckless play both teams exhibited today and if I were coaching either team you can bet your ass tomorrow’s practice starts with a bag skate.

Words 121

We also had some Hockey happen

Lost in all of the chaos was an actual hockey game that was played.  The Berserkers handled the Kraken with relative easy when the puck was in play winning 4-1 with a late empty netter to tally the final goal.  Digging through the numbers after the game it really comes as no surprised that Newfoundland pulled off the victory.  They were solidly ahead in all statistical categories except faceoffs and let’s be honest, who cares about faceoffs as long as you aren’t thoroughly manhandles which the Berserkers weren’t.  Looking ahead the Berserkers look to stay hot and win their fourth straight to start the season tomorrow against Anaheim while the Kraken hope to climb back up to .500 against the Whalers also tomorrow evening.

Are we looking at the same game? As far as I can see, Freidland didn't have any PIM in this game, as surprising as that may seem. There were a total of 8 PIM between the two teams.

Comment One (215 Words)
Three Stars of the Game Analysis
1. Ryuuji Minamino
The clean sweep of stars for Newfoundland in this game begins with Minamino, who had 2 assists (Harrington and Timonen), 4 shots, a blocked shot, a hit, and one each of a takeaway and a giveaway. His offensive game rating was second on the team only behind Steve Harrington, who scored one of the Berserkers 4 goals, and his defensive rating wasn't too shabby either, being fourth highest on the team at 66. A great all-around game for Ryuuji and he deserved the first star.

2. Jukka Timonen
Timonen scored the put-away goal in this game in the second quarter, putting the Berserkers up 3-0 at the time. He put up a great game on both ends of the ice, with the third-highest overall game rating on the team, a blocked shot, and two takeaways. He also played the most PP time, helping his team secure 2 PP goals.

3. (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn
Kostitsyn started the pull away from the Kraken with goal number 2 for the Berserkers early in the second period. His game was relatively quiet outside of that, however, and he played the 4th fewest shifts with only just over 11 minutes of ice time, and no significant stats outside of his 2 shots on goal to be recorded.

Comment Two (140 Words)
Friedland Feeling Funky?
Some might say that the penalty box is where Adam Friedland feels most at home (he leads the league in PIM), so it was surprising to most when he didn't visit it at all during this game vs Newfoundland. His one hit was clean, he had two shots on goal, and he even assisted teammates, Jimmy Wagner and Dwight Knight, with Carolina's only goal of the night. Teammates were shooting him nervous glances wondering if everything was ok. After the game, it was speculated if something was going on outside the rink to make him a little less likely to commit fouls, but nothing came p when anyone did any digging. Maybe he just wanted to see what it was like to be a non-aggressive goon for a game. As it turns out, it doesn't end well for the Kraken.

Comment Three (131 Words)
NL Continues Their Dominance
It surprised many of the talking heads around the league when not Detroit but Newfoundland shot out of the gate early in the season. After this game, the Berserkers were at a strong 7-4-1 and hadn't shown any signs of slowing down. If they continue this trend (which at the time of this writing we know they have), they are easily the division favorites, while last season's dominant team, the Detroit Falcons, are sitting tied with Maine at the bottom of the division. Ryuji Miniamino leads the league in points, Cale Amundsen leads the league in Save Pct. and in shut outs. All signs point toward this team making a deep run in the playoffs, and NL should feel comfortable with their lead heading into the second half of the season.

Three Stars

(Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn - Kostitsyn got the second goal of the game for the Newfoundland Berserkers, 3 minutes into the second period with the assist from PBJ Souppan. This is Kostitsyn’s second season and is hoping to keep preforming the way he has been in his games.

Jukka Timonen - Timonen got the third goal of the game for the Berserkers, giving them a 3-0 lead in the second period. His teammates Minamino and Jutlia were by his side to make this happen.

Ryuuji Minamino - Finally our last star Ryuuji Minamino picking up two assists this game. Entering his third season, Minamino continues to show growth as a player.

Words 109

Penalties

Tonight’s game came with 4 penalties total, the first two dished out to the Krakens. Both Cuddles and Vitecek were given out 2-minute penalties for tripping in the first period. Their frustration then lead to a goal just minutes after the last penalty of that period was given. Later into the third period, 2 more penalties are given one, another one to Ambacas Cuddles for tripping and a penalty to Tinke Jutlia of the Berserkers for goaltender interference. Just under two minutes later we see a goal from Dwight Knight. Julia’s interference could have allowed the Kraken to sneak in one goal towards the end of the game.

Words 108

Valiant Effort

At the end of the game, we can compare the shots on the goal of each team. Carolina Kraken really struggled to keep up with the Berserkers offence leaving the Kraken with 24 shots on goal compared to the Berserkers, who stayed true to their name and went berserk with 40 shots on goal. In their last efforts to get at least one goal this game, Dwight Knight of the Carolina Kraken manages to get a goal for his team with the help of Wagner and Friedland. While the Kraken could not get the win today, their efforts will not go unnoticed.

Comment 1: Interview with Kraken's GM @FuzzSHL

1. This game wasn't really successful for Kraken. Bersekers had almost twice as many shots as Kraken. What went wrong in this game?
FuzzSHL: The guys were still learning the new system so we expected a few hiccups, but they seemed to leave their desire to win back in the hotel.

2. Kraken had 3 loses against Berskers early in this season. Did this tough schedule at the start of the season affected Kraken's performance?
FuzzSHL: The losses themselves don't seem to effect the team. There are some games in which you outplay the other team but get some bad bounces. We love a tough schedule, it drives us to be better.

3. Despite loss, some players had a pretty good match. Who was the best Carolina's player in this game?
FuzzSHL: Friedland this game really started to show that he was a guy we could place more trust in as the season progressed. He proved that thought right when he was awarded an all-star selection.

(166 words)

Comment 2: Interview with Bersekers' GM @JNH

1. Bersekers outshooted Kraken in this game. Are many shots on goal an important aspect of Bersekers' game plan?
JNH: I'd say it's definitely a positive when we're outshooting the other team but we're moreso focused on ensuring that we're keeping our shot quality high.  If you have 30 shots from the blueline, it's not guaranteed that you're going to score any more than if you're taking 10 from the slot.

2. Bersekers have an extraordinary season. Did those 3 wins against Kraken helped Bersekers to build a confidence?
JNH: I think so.  Carolina is building a real strong team and I think we've managed to show that we're currently a step ahead.  Who knows if it'll stay that way but it's a great feeling moving forward in our season.

3. Your team only had 2 penalty minutes. Is Newfoundland a disciplined team?
JNH: We try to be but with players like Livius wanting to take on more of a grit role and everyone bumping and grinding for pucks, you're bound to be in the box.  The best remedy to PIMs is having the puck, so hopefully our possession stats will keep us out.

(194 words)

Comment 3: Interview with Bersekers' player Ryuui Minamino @Nhamlet

1. Ryuui Minamino were named first star of the game. What do you prefer - winning games or receiving individual acknowledgments? Why?
Ryuui MinaminoI don't need the individual acknowledgements but I understand that through contributing, it increases my team's chance of success. I'm sure most players would agree they'd trade for a down season in exchange for a championship and I don' think I'm any different.

2. You got two assists in this game. Are you more a goal scorer or playmaker?
Ryuui Minamino: Neither, I love to score but at the end of the day if it goes in and I'm involved in some way I'm already more than happy about it. It just happens that I have a great playmaker in Matty who does a lot of the dishing and Patty to make space and do the dirty work in the corner.

3. Bersekers outshooted Kraken in this game. Are many shots on goal a part of Bersekers' game plan?
Ryuui Minamino: I think so just because we know that any of our lines on both forward and defense are so well rounded. Rather than having a set play, any one of us has the accuracy to take a shot, physicality to fight for rebounds and 2nd chances to ensure that the opposing goalie has to work hard to make the save.

Thoughts from a Player

Axel Foley in the house to give his impressions on his performance.

"Personally, this is a tough game to look back on. Cause like, it was one of my best performances to date, outside of scoring the opening goal of the season for Carolina, but on the other hand we struggled to generate offence as a team and the team's success is more important than anything I can do."

"One of the biggest things that led to my individual success tonight was really my partner, Hutts, helping out. He's great at moving the puck, he has such a mind for the offensive side of the game it's hard not to notice that and gain confidence from the way he handles the puck. Another big thing for me was watching Friedland out there. When he comes off, we normally come on, and seeing him have such a great start to the season that was exemplified in this game here, it put pressure on me to follow that up when I got out on the ice and I think it's safe to say I did that. Absolute sex bomb, Frieds."

What great quotes, man.

Frans Sm-Eller?

After last season where Eller was one of the main reasons the Kraken beat out Maine for a playoff spot, it was expected that his numbers would only improve to start the following season. Losing no one to call-ups, there was no reason to assume his numbers would drop. Despite this, 4 goals against is really hard to swallow for a net-minder who wants to see the team succeed. So, how much of this game can be put on Eller's shoulders? None of it. Tonight was a clear case of the team not showing up in front of Eller, a painful call-back to last season's struggles. When the even-strength game is 2-0 in favour of the other team it is never possible to pin the blame on the goalie. Carolina was effectively shut out by Amundsen outside of the powerplay and outside of the powerplay, Eller only gave up two goals. Now it isn't 'smart' to discount some stats because they happened on the powerplay, and that's still hockey, the 5v5 aspect of games is important to consider as that's what majority of hockey is played in. If the game was just played 5 on 5 though, Eller would've posted 54 minutes of two goal hockey, and thats nothing to laugh at.

Who Let the Dogs Out?

I spent some time on Carolina, but let's look at Newfoundland's production. First off, obvious team MVP, to me at least, is Cale Amundsen. Dude definitely has a good team in front of him, but the amount of shutout and great game he produces is extraordinary. A .920 sv% over 27 G, and only 4 regulation losses. Tonight was no different as he picked up one of his 21 wins in a shut-out bid that was stomped by Dwight Knight on the powerplay. Tinke Jutila definitely owes him a steak dinner after that one. Despite the penalty taken, Jutila picked up an assist alongside fellow d-man PBJ Souppan, while star D-man Jukka Timonen collected a goal. This strong play by the defensive core allows the forwards on the Berserker's roster to really run rampant on other team defences. With Amundsen and the D combined there isn't much defensive zone work left for the wingers to expend their energy on and that allows them to expend their stamina on offensive ventures.

So to answer the question of who let the dogs out, it was Cale, Cale let the dogs of Newfoundland out.

Déjà Vu - 115 words

Fans in the stands were given a case of déjà vu in tonight’s game, with the exact same results as the last home game, which was also against the Carolina Kraken.  Though when asked, the fans would love to see every game end the same way, with their favorite Berserkers being the victors over the opponent by a score of 4 to 1.  Just like the first meeting between these two teams, the Newfoundland Berserkers got off to a hot start, taking the lead early and never letting it up.  While the Carolina Kraken would not score through the first two Periods, and only scoring once in the third Period just to not get shutout.

Power-full Game - 160 words

Even with only 8 Penalty Minutes in total for the game, both teams were able to make the most of them, scoring on 3 of the 4 Power Play opportunities of the night.  In the first Period, Steve Herrington was able to convert on 1 of the 2 Power Play chances for the Newfoundland Berserkers off of a Tripping Penalty from Vitek Vitecek.  The second Period was very quiet in terms of Penalties, with both teams not committing any for the full 20 minutes.   The third Period accounted for another 2 Penalties, one by Ambacas Cuddles of Carolina for Tripping, and one by Tinke Jutila of Newfoundland for Goaltender Interference.  Newfoundland was able to score again on the Power Play with Guy LeGrande finding the back of the net to make the game a 4 to 0 lead for his Berserkers.  Dwight Knight was able to end the shutout for Cale Amundsen on the only Power Play for the Kraken.

Shooting Range - 113 words

Newfoundland was dominating in all phases of the game tonight, but nothing more glaring than the Shots on Goal total.  Almost doubling the shots that the Kraken took throughout the evening, the Berserkers put 40 shots towards net minder Frans Eller.  With 13 Shots in the first Period, 15 Shots in the second, and 12 Shots to finish in the third, the Berserkers were unrelenting with their attack throughout the whole night.  The rest of the Kraken players did their best at helping out Eller, with 19 total Blocked Shots for the game, which definitely took some of the pressure off of Eller, but Newfoundland was merciless and just kept shooting their shots.

Battle of the Highseas

Both teams coming into this game had respectable records with the Newfoundland Berserkers sporting a 5-1-1 record and the Carolina Kraken sporting a 3-2-1 record. Tales of sea monsters are prevalent everywhere around the world and the battle between the Beserkers and the Kraken bring the fantasy to life. However in this case the tables were turned. The Kraken were absolutely dismantled by the Berserkers making the fans in go for lack of a better word berserk. The game itself was expected to be a close game as both teams were coming into this game looking hot however on the playmaking magic of Ryuuji Minamino the Berserks de-tentacled the Kraken and left them rotting at the bottom of the sea.

Powerplay Destruction

This mythic match up was no doubt going to lead to some crazy penalties and extreme physicality however only one team really capitalized on the chances they were given. The Newfoundland Berserkers opened the game up with a one goal lead when Viticek took a bad penalty and this allowed the berserkers to capitalize and set the tone for this game. The same way Newfoundland opened the scoring in the game they would end it with another powerplay goal in the third period to close their scoring for the game putting themselves up 4-0 on the Kraken. The only goal the Kraken scored this game was also on the powerplay, however more opportunities and better conversion was the story of the night for Newfoundland.

Hero and Zero

The hero of the game in this blowout win for the Newfoundland Berserkers was Ryuuji Minamino netting himself two assists during this game. The Japanese native was doing everything right this game, and simply was a force that could not be stopped despite multiple attempts to stop his domination. He had the vision and willed pucks onto his teammates sticks leading to the victory vs the Carolina Kraken. The zero of the game was! the whole Kraken team. It's hard to really throw one player under the bus for the performance from the Kraken so its really their whole team that dropped the ball in this one but expect them to bounce back next game.

Going Berzerk
Newfoundland has been standing on the shoulders of it’s veterans this season. They sit atop the league with a great veteran presence but also with a solid crop of rookies to build off of. They will surely be a presence in the league for several seasons. All over the ice tonight for the Newfies were players like Steve Harrington, who ripped a big and important opening goal in the first period, the squeecky (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn who scored the second of the game, and PJ Souppan who anchored the blueline for the Berserkers. The goaltending battle for this game was a duel for the ages, as both Frans Eller and Cale Amundsen are two vets in the league who are among the best in the league. The Newfies needed a big game from Amundsen tonight and they got it, as he stopped tons of shots and nearly sealed a shutout against a good Kraken squad.

I Smell a Bromance...
Wingers Drwight Knight and Jimmy Wagner are crucial for the Kraken’s offensive structure. Although the team was only able to pot one goal tonight, like many nights for the Kraken it came off the stick of Wagner from a pass by Knight. Knight, who’s birthplace remains a mystery, was taken under the wing of Austrian-born Jimmy Wagner during his rookie season last year and the two have been inseparable since. They are on a line together, they sit next to each other in the locker room, and they even share an apartment together. As their bromace grows stronger, will their offensive output continue to rise? The two will surely be important members of the Kraken before they embark on their SHL journeys.

Three Stars
3. (Clean) Andrei Kostitsyn – without Clean Andrei, the Berzerkers would not only be a lower-scoring team, but a dirtier one. He’s been a goal-scoring machine this season and his breakaway goal was a big one, allowing his team a two-goal lead in the second period.

2. Jukka Timonen – More like TimonIN the net. Haha, get it? The Finnish defenseman arguably put the Kraken in a choke-hold with his big goal in the second putting the Berzerkers up 3-0. The veteran Dman plays a strong two-way game and will certainly be a pillar on the blueline for the Manhattan Rage in the future.

1. Ryuuji Minamino – Half of the scoring for this game was done by one man, who certaintly deserves first-star credit in this game. The powerful veteran winger hails from Japan and has found a home in Newfoundland. Watch closely as he transcends from the juniors to the pros and helps the Chicago Syndicate later in his career.

Three Stars: (116 words)

FIRST STAR: Deserving of the first star, Ryuji Minamino picked up two assists in route to helping his team get the win. Ryuuji has been a dynamic point producer throughout the season and continues to put in strong performances.

SECOND STAR: Jukka Timonen has been known to be more of an defensive player, and he continued that play style through the game bruising the Kraken and maintaining scoring chances to the outsides. Besides this Timonen also added a goal in the matchup.

THIRD STAR: Andrei Kostitsyn came flying out the gates after the first intermission. Catching a pass from PBJ Souppan and scoring a goal three minutes into the second period. This earned him third star.

COMMENT 2: Goaltender’s Duel: (105 words)
Coming into the match both goaltenders of the Newfoundland Berserkers and Carolina Kraken respectively were on a roll. Both Frans Eller and Cale Admundson had under two goals a game averages. Eller had much more of a job cut out for him in this matchup, as he faced forty shots, letting in four goals. Fortunately for both the Berserkers and Admundson, the Kraken’s offence was not at great form today, and the Berserkers only conceded one goal throughout the matchup. Both goalies did however show that they are top goalies in the league, and Eller is looking forward to redeeming himself in the following games.

COMMENT 3: Minamato dishing out apples (111 words)
Ryuuji Minamato has shown that he is one of the best offensive players in the league so far, with a flurry of points and help from a well rounded Newfoundland team, Minamato has been a force. This continues into this game as Minamato managed to receive the first star of the game award and has shown his success in passing the puck and creating opportunities for his teammates. In the first period, Minamato managed to dish the puck out of a scrum to teammate Steve Harrington, who blasted the puck past Frans Eller. Later in the game, Minamato added another assist when he found Jukka Timonen wide open in the slot.

Comment 1: Goal city in Newfoundland
The game between the Newfoundland Berserkers and the Carolina Kraken was from far from a boring game, if you like goals and we’re a Newfoundland Berserker fan this is was a perfect game for you. The Carolina Kraken were down 4-0 through 3 periods until a Kraken finally put it into the back of the net. The Carolina Kraken fans that traveled with the team was silent after the second period was over. The score was 3-0 after two periods, the loyal fans waiting until it was over, you saw a lot of orange jerseys in the seats leave the arena.

Comment 2: Newfoundland off to a hot start!
The Newfoundland Berserkers started this season off to a hot start, coming into this game they were 5-1-1. After a blow out victory they collected their sixth win, they have been winning and winning and winning to start, they look like they want to win it all this year, yes it is only 8 games into the season but Newfoundland is looking to go Berserk on all the rest of the league. The team is in a winning mode to start, they hope to keep it going for rest of season. We are ready to see how they finish the year.

Comment 3: What’s Kraken?
After the 4-1 lose to the Newfoundland Berserkers, Carolina Kraken were awfully quiet heading back to the bus to get out of St. John, and forget what happened. They were having a good start to the game but during the second period it was like they forgot to come out of the locker room and just left the goalie stranded out in front of the Newfoundland Berserkers team. They finally put a goal on the board, but it was a little to late to get a comeback with only 11 minutes left in the third period. The Carolina Kraken have been struggling to start but I know all the players and fans are ready to bounce back and win games.
