S54 PT #5 - Parent's Day
#16

Cal is a bit young to be a dad himself, and with being on the road to games for long periods of time, and off to practice or the gym pretty much constantly he doesn't really have the time to settle down and think about having kids at the moment either. He's not in a serious relationship at the moment either. He has been dating for a bit, but American girls are all so shallow compared to the Swiss girls he used to date back home.

Cal didn't really do anything special for father's day. Before he moved away from his Swiss home, the family would have breakfast together every Sunday morning. With the time difference and distance, that's obviously not possible now, but he has been skyping with his family every Sunday for like an hour or so, and this Sunday was no different. Gifts and presents aren't really important to Cal's family, and just getting to talk to his son despite him being on the other sifr of the country was all his dad wanted for Father's day anyway.

Ryosuke Sato has grown up to be very appreciative for all the things that his parents had to do to get him into this league. If it weren't for his father taking him to hockey practice when he was younger, and his mother making great healthy team dinners after games Sato would not be where he is today. Most importantly, he really appreciated all the time his parents took to attend games and cheer him on from the stands. He knew the sacrifices they had to make to be there, attending the games even after a long day of work. That is why whenever he gets the chance, Sato takes the opportunity to thank his parents. And so, on a special day like today Sato would normally spend the entire day with his parents after making a home cooked lunch at home and going out to a nice Japanese restaurant for dinner in downtown Vancouver. We also can't forget about the gifts. Sato's parents were never too materialistic and never asked for any gifts but Sato himself thought that this is one of the few days in the year to do it regardless. For his parents, Sato decided to purchase a nice wine for them to share over the dinner as they chatted and enjoyed each other's company. What a great day for the Sato family as Ryosuke could step back from all the on ice issues to spend quality time with his parents.

Ensio does not have kids yet, but Ensio himself has parents. What made planning for any kind of surprise difficult was the fact that the parents are living in Finland, but luckily with the help of some friends, Ensio managed to do something fun for a special day. Turku, Finland where Ensio was born and where his parents still live is a great place during the summer, so first thing in the morning a limo driver knocked on the parent's door to take them out for a lovely breakfast. Sun was shining, next to the water, is there anything better?

From there the driver took the parents straight to an airport, as a surprise Ensio organized a private plane to fly his parents from Turku to New England! Unfortunately, neither of the parents were able to do such a trip in a short notice, both had to work on the next day, so the limo driver just took them back home where they called Ensio and explained the situation to him. Ensio understood and was once again reminded about his poor planning skills.

They say that the thought is what matters, I think that is true. Once the off-season starts some day Ensio has planned a trip to Turku.

Danny is a long way from parenthood in any way that would get him breakfast in bed, a weekend free of household chores, and a small gift for Father's Day; the mode of celebration he and his siblings have traditionally held for their parents on their respective days. Some people might count Rudy as Danny's kid, but the day Rudy does the dishes and gives him a new tie is not very likely to come.

Danny's first thought was to invite his Dad up to St. Louis for the final few home games before the Playoffs. He would take some time off of practice to do some sight-seeing and hang out between games. That was what he had done with his Mom for Mother's Day and she had loved the Arch and the museums. After thinking about it, he instead flew home for the weekend to surprise his family. Mowing the lawn and making pancakes isn't as much fun as taking your Dad out to Kaufman Park to play catch or a tour of the Anheuser-Busch brewery, but it was worth it if for nothing else than the look of surprise when the pancakes weren't burned and Danny was sitting at the dining room table.

Kaarlo Kekkonen does not currently have any children, and as far as he’s concerned that stage of his life is still some way off. He does however have parents, his father being of course the former SHL defenseman Kari Kekkonen, who made his name playing with the Kelowna Knights and then spending a couple quiet seasons with the West Kendall Platoon. This year, Father’s Day fell while the Renegades were hard at work preparing for the final games of the season, where they’re hoping to secure their status as a playoff team for the first time since S47. Kaarlo didn’t have time to get anything too extravagant for his dad, but he knew his dad was a huge fan of current SHL superstar Andreas Kvalheim, so after practice got Andreas to sign some Renegades merchandise that he posted over to his dad. Hopefully it made it back to Finland in time, but either way Kaarlo is pretty confident his dad will be happy with the gifts he was able to get over to him this time around.

Williams is not a parent, he hasn't had time to even settle down. He just plays hockey. On this Parent's Day, he celebrated with his mother and father by flying back to Detroit for a surprise visit. Once there, he took his parents out to a nice steak dinner and spent most of the night talking about the days of his youth. Williams had one more surprise for his parents before heading back to New Orleans. He gave his father a picture of a cabin in the woods with the caption reading, "Shelter in the Upper Peninsula". He told them both happy parents day and gave them the address to their new cabin. Just over the bridge, make a left on 2, but stop in St Ignace first, you'll find the very small town of Epoufette. From there you'd have to follow this hand drawn map to reach the cabin, but you'll be glad you did. Your closest neighbor is a mile away and very friendly. He'll take care of the lawn while you are away. Happy Parent's Day.

Ivan Maximus is in no way ready to be a parent. However, this did not stop him from using the off day as an excuse to sit around and do little to nothing. It's important to get those naps in.

Ivan's father Igor is still alive and well in the homeland of Russia. Unfortunately it's very tough to get out to see him during hockey season. However, during this off season Ivan is planning to take Igor out for some well deserved father and son bonding time. Igor is an avid outdoors-man and Ivan will suffer through the still insanely cold summer in Russia with him. There they will fish, hunt if possible, and probably drink a little too much a little too early and catch one of Ivan and Igor's favorite mid-day activities - a nap. Some may see it as wasting time during the day, but the Maximus family see's it as time well spent to refresh, sleep off the alcohol, and start over again in the evening.

Aumy Jr. is only 19 years old and he is just a kid with big hockey dream who isn't even thinking about his own kids yet. He is spending his time mostly playing hockey to get better before his second SHL draft, because in previous he went undrafted. Hockey is a priority for him at this moment and in future he might think about getting kids by his own aswell.

Aumy Jr. is second player from his dynasty / family. His dad played 14 seasons in SHL back in the far S27 and now he is retired. He is training Aumy Jr. and living near Colorado, so they can meet and train together. Aumy Jr. gave him a present and it was not so expenive, but heart warming gift - the stick with which he scored his first SMJHL goal.

Mom of Aumy Jr. live in San Francisco in private house of new hockey player. He just had conversation through face time with her and sent her paycheck which she can spend however she wants. Parents are really imporant for him and he always try to make their days special and better.

Guy LeGrande is a father to three kids. They do special things for him all year so he didn't expect anything special on the actual Father's Day occasion. To his surprise, all three families came over in the early afternoon and made the best BBQ dinner he has had in my years. It's not easy for all his kids to get together as they live in different parts of the state. They had it planned out many weeks in advance. They took pictures, cooked a great big batch of rib eye steaks and visited until late evening. Kids are great to have. He didn't have to lift a finger to do anything. Guy LeGrande was a proud father.

Both of Guy's parents have passed this last year. He wasn't looking forward to Mother's Day or Father's Day because he had nobody, for the first time, to call or visit. I think that might have motivated Guy's kids to do something special and make this time of year more happy than sad. The plan worked perfectly. While Guy misses his parents, he realizes that his family is the most important at this point in his life. Truly a fun day.

Frans Eller's dad, Hans, taught him everything he needed to know about hockey growing up. He brought Frans out on the ice at age 3 for the first time, and shot the first pucks at Frans as he made the leap towards becoming a goaltender. Now that hockey is an activity that is so intertwined into Frans' very DNA and become a part of who he is as a man, Frans always looks back fondly and appreciates what his dad did to allow him to turn into the man he is today. For Fathers Day, Frans sent one of his gameworn Carolina Kraken jerseys back home to Copenhagen, Denmark to be framed alongside a puck from Frans' first North American shutout. He hoped it would help pay his father back for all the time and money invested into getting Frans where he was today, although a long road remains in front of him.
