Thoughts from a Newly Created User
#1

Hello again, I previously came to you with an introduction of my player KOBO. This piece will be more just a few things that I would like to comment on after going through the player creation process. Note that this is not my first sim league experience. I previously have created in both NSFL and PBE.

First, I want to say in general the site is pretty easy to navigate for someone new to the league, but not new to sim leagues. Following the player creation guide was very straight forward, and other than the anxiety that comes with spending all that TPE right away I think it was pretty easy. The thing that I think still confuses me a bit is Roles versus Positions. Is a Role something that is visible in the simulation program and helps determine the different actions your player takes? If I picked a Sniper as my Role, but then I put TPE into Attributes that aren't needed for the Sniper Role is that wasted or will my player still use those Attributes even if they aren't primary to my Role? I've talked to my friend slothfacekilla about this some, but wanted to try and voice my thoughts here so others could maybe read and comment. If I hadn't had sloth to talk to I would've probably agonized over this decision and how to properly distribute my initial TPE even more than I did. Maybe it would be better to not give a new player a ton of starting TPE until they get put on a team and can talk to their new GM about how to build their player.

The next thing I want to talk about is Point Tasks. I don't understand why SMJHL and SHL have separate Point Tasks. That seems to make things confusing and more convoluted than they need to be. I think I heard from somewhere that that was being changed, but don't know the details on this. So I have created my player and am ready to jump in and start earning TPE, but wait, I'm not allowed to do any PT until I am drafted to a team in the next SMJHL draft. What? I just created and you're telling me I can't be active and do things to stay engaged and have fun with this new league? I can only do Activity Checks and Weekly Trainings that each take a total of 5 minutes to do at most? I really don't understand this choice. In NSFL as soon as your player is approved, which is usually within hours of creating, you are allowed to do Point Tasks. It helps new players engage in the community and get a feel for how the site works more right off the bat. The only PT available to new users is one for creating your Update page and a quick new user Survey. I'll come back to the Update page in a second, but I just have to say it is super disappointing to see all of these available Tasks sitting there and being told I'm not allowed to do them. I would love to know the reasoning behind this choice as it seems counterproductive to me. Someone will probably post below that its because it allows for all rookies to start off on an equal footing and to have the same amount of PT opportunities. Why does that matter? If someone is a few TPE ahead of me because they created before me in the draft class I don't see that as a problem.

The last thing I want to talk about briefly is the Update and Bank systems. I really love the implementation of this here. Having an easy to use Updater that puts your update together in the correct format for you is so useful. I wish we had this in NSFL. If this helps to standardize everyone's update page that is a great thing. It helps Updaters jobs to be easier and helps make the time it takes players to put their Updates together a lot shorter. Also, the Bank system is amazing. Being able to just have it tied to my account and see how much money I have is so useful. I don't have to load a massive Google Sheet or anything. I also love that I just click a button to pay for my Weekly Training. Whoever came up with this system is a genius. Could you please come to NSFL and set this up for us there?

I hope at least some of my random thoughts are worthwhile. If not at least I'm making money that I can put towards Training for writing this. Don't hesitate to reply here to start a discussion about some of these topics or message me on Discord. I'm @drectors cut#9644 on Discord.

As someone new to the FHM player building, the role thing kind of threw me off as well.

In the past with our old sim engine, your player archetype affected the strengths and weaknesses of your player (which in turn affected the maximum you can raise certain attributes). I found this pretty easy to follow.

From what I can gather after reading through the FHM player builder, the role doesn't matter as you can freely spend as much TPE wherever you'd like regardless of your role, and that in the end your GMs/coaches pick your role on the team. This may be wrong, but it's the understanding I have after reading the info on the builder.

If this is not the case, it may be worthwhile having it more plainly explained on the creation page. Other than that, I enjoyed reading your thoughts as someone new to the SHL!

SMJHL PTs are exclusively for rookies and, IIRC, are focused on getting acquainted with the SMJHL. It's also nice because it doesn't force brand new users to learn about both the SMJHL and SHL at the same time when they won't have a SHL team until their 2nd season anyway.

As for roles vs positions, you're right in the divide. The roles are a style of play at the position you choose. The nice thing about FHM is that it encourages a "balance with emphasis" approach. Our old engine, STHS, had 10 stats, and you only really needed points in 7 of them, which was boring. Here, you can put most of your points toward Sniper attributes, but you still want to work on other stats to be physically capable and not as much of a defensive liability. As for how to spend points, there's no wrong way to start with, as long as you're not sinking all of your points into one or two stats. Once you have a team, your GM should be able to guide you into a build that works for you and the team.

you're right for the GMs/coaches picking the role you fit in the most depending on your build (it's exactly like football manager in that sense). fhm is great because there's more variety in what attributes you can choose to grow, and unlike STHS power forwards and enforcers will actually perform the way they're supposed to

That sounds pretty cool, I'm excited to see it all in action moving forward.

My phone wants to melt everytime I try to load up the NSFL bank sheet. It feels like ordering a UHaul to bring all this data over to my front door step when all I wanted was a sheet of paper. Even when it does load, trying to parse through transactions that are relevant to me is still not a whole lot better.
