S56 Championship Week

1.
I believe this season was a poor performance by Zlatan Ibrahimovic jr. He had 25 points in 50 games and was a -16 on the ice. Thus, he did not meet my individual player goals. I cannot blame the -16 on him as the team performed poorly overall so it makes sense that he will be in the negative. Where I am disappointed with Zlatan is his offensive game. During the prior offseason, we made sure to improve his offensive abilities. He went back to his hometown in Malmo, Sweden to learn from his dad the skills required to be an offensive phenom but he fell short. Maybe its that since he is from a strong pedigree he expects to have more than 25 points for a defenseman. Many might consider this to be a very good amount but Zlatan is never pleased until he soars above his expectation. To better himself in the offensive game next season, Zlatan will continue to improve on his offensive awareness. He will learn to get a better vision from the game and also position himself well. Defensively, Ibra jr did very well with 97 shot blocks and 60+ hits. I think if Zlatan can improve offensively, he will be a threat to many teams.

2.

In my honest opinion, I think it would have to be the s53 matchup of Hamilton vs Edmonton. I believe this was the first time FHM took over Simon T and everyone was a little bit confused about what matters at this time frame in terms of performance. Hamilton was always known as a team that had great coach and they had Phelps who was a beast at that point in time. Edmonton was another team that was on top of their conference as well. Funny enough both of these teams were respectively second in their conference and faced each other in the finals. What i believe honestly helped Hamilton to beat Edmonton was simply the masterminds in Hamilton that knew FHM better than anyone. Even this season Hamilton is in the finals with a roster that is not even close to the others. This is what is great about hamilton because they are like that old wise hermit. They know what matters and exploit it to their advantage. This is also why they beat the number one seed in the league, New England Wolfpack 4-1. I am sure majority of the league that this will be a close one but that was not the case. After having the most difficult matchup of anyone, Hamilton later went to face Edmonton where they emerged victorious 4-2 in the series.

4.
If the SHL needed to set up a playoff bubble, especially now in times of covid, I would definitely pick a Canadian city over an American one. Why? It's actually very simply. I think Canada was able to handle covid much better than America and as a result would have been the safer choice. Now, to choose the city, I think i would have to pick Vancouver. Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in Canada. Its mild climate along with the presence of water and natural beauty will make it anyones choice to visit. Thus, why not host the SHL playoff there. Players would be able to witness the beautiful landscape along with having awesome food. Vancouver is known to have great ethnic diversity so players can taste food from all over the world. Although the city is expensive, it wouldn't be a bad option for players since they do get paid well. It will also be unbiased since there are no SHL teams from Vancouver. There is only an SMJHL team. Thus, players will not need to feel intimidated by the local citizens.

a.
When we look at the rosters of both teams, it is evident that Hamilton Steelhawks has the better roster. The team has more than 4 players over 2K tpe whereas Buffalo only has 1 player in Monkey D luffy. Offensively i also think that Hamilton is much deeper. Defensively, Buffalo is the better team. I can't believe Hamilton even wen that far with a 900 tpe goalie. The only thing Hamilton had over Buffalo was their offense and i think the coaches did a great job here for fine tuning tactics that best suited the team.

b. I highly doubt the teams making strategic adjustments. This is because they made it this far and I know they will utilize the tactics that has benefitted the team the most. There is no point trying new things in the final series. You just have to go with what you have. If i was the coach i would have went with what best utilized the strengths of each team. For Buffalo, it would be defense and for Hamilton it would be offense.

c.
Buffalo is situated around Lake Eerie and Hamilton is from Lake Ontario but the greatest of the Great Lakes has to be Lake Superior. Why? Just because it has super in its name and it is the largest of the bunch. Another cool fact about Lake Superior is that it is the largest body of Fresh Water on Earth.

d.
If i had to hang out with a user from one of these teams, it would definitely have to be with Grum, the user of Nicholas Owens. Why it is simply because we were both from the same draft class of season 51 and we were at the top of our draft class. Both of us are defenseman with very similar builds so i guess the similarities mean we will be pretty chill buddies.

Reflection on your season - how did your player fare on the ice this season? Did you meet or surpass your individual player goals or did you come up short? Whether you excelled or disappointed - what can you attribute that to? What will you try to do better next season?

While statistically my season was alright, looking at the stats this season m goalie was probably a top 8 - 10 goalie in the SMJHL. In 25 games played I finished with a .911 SV%, 2.98 GAA, 1 SO and 13 wins. That is all fine and dandy, but it definitely fell short of my expectations. Although though I split time equally with fellow Battleborn goalie CK Supernaw, my player played worse of the two. No disrespect towards him, he's a great teammate and a helluva player but I was just hoping for more out of my own player. This offseason will be an important one, my player will have to buckle down, stay out of the casinos in Vegas, and train in all the right areas. Next season my player is going to come out make the most out of his split starts and hopefully help back stop the Battleborn to a 4 Star Cup.

Of the 10 most recent finals series, which do you think is the most memorable and why? Which will be remembered in history as the best/most important/most memorable series or victory? S46: BUF over NOLA, S47: WKP over CGY, S48: BUF over WPG, S49: EDM over NEW, S50: CGY over TBB, S51: HAM over EDM, S52: MAN over SFP, S53: HAM over EDM, S54: NOLA over HAM, S55: BUF over NOLA.

Well I'm a fairly new user, this will only be my 2nd CW, so I'm definitely lacking in the history department and all those previous series. Although I am going to go with a finals from before I arrived and that's the S53 Ham over Edm. That final series had Hamilton win the Challenge Cup in a 6 game series where no team scored more then 3 goals in a game and Hamilton earned 2 shutouts over Edmonton. Although it's not the actual games in the series, or who was on the teams that made this series so memorable, it's the fact that this series came at start of the big switch to FHM. The beginning of an era is a real big deal and the Hamilton Steelhawks have been no slouch since the big switch over, making the finals in 3 out of the 4 years and winning it in that first year in S53 and just recently in S56.

FHM's 12-team playoff bracket setup has received a fair bit of scrutiny. It re-seeds after the play-in round and for some reason puts the #1 seed and #2 seed on the same side of the bracket. I challenge you to come up with a different playoff format - can you come up with a format that's dumber/worse than this? be creative! Come up with the worst possible format for a 12-team playoff.

Alright, hear me out on this one, the current 12 team format isn't ideal with the way it reseeds the conferences after each round. Although if we wanted to make it worse all we would have to do is follow the way professional American football does their playoffs. Single elimination. Seed the teams 1 - 8 according to conference, the 9th place teams don't make it, and then pair off the highest seed with the lowest seed in each conference. Now this idea doesn't even sound half bad except the single elimination part of it all. With how close most hockey games are and exciting a 7 game series is, a single game just wouldn't do it justice and I'm sure have a lot of people bitching.

Welp, you waited until the last day to grind out your CW and the CC finals are longggggggg over by now. congrats to [TEAM], woo! Reflecting back on the series, who gets your vote for series MVP? Make the case why this player deserves it over any other.

I would say Hamilton's and the SHL's regular season goal and point scoring leader left winger Theo Morgan deserves the finals MVP. He would take his historic regular season where he scored an absursed 43 goals in 50 games while adding another 39 assists for 82 points, and continue that next level playing in the playoffs where he would lead the Hamilton Steelhawks with 14 goals and 23 points in only 18 games. In that finals series alone he scored a point in every Hamilton win and finished with 5 goals and 1 assist in the 5 game series, including scoring a game winning goal in overtime during game 4.

What's your prediction for this season's IIHF tournament? Which teams do you expect to do well (or not well)? Which players?

For this years IIHF tournament, the bigger winner will be (and always will be) team Canada. Canadians invented the sport of hockey and they will forever be the favorites to win every tournament from the beginning of time until the world boils over. Although specifically in this year's tournament there is a legit reason the Canadian's will win it all and that reason is none other then goaltender Frans Eller. That dude is an absolute stud in net and can be the difference in any game. In only his 2 seasons in the big leagues for the New England Wolfpack he's played in a maximum starting amount 88 games and has performed exceptionally well on a rebuilding Wolfpack team, with a 2.97 GAA, .918 SV% and 4 shutouts. If you look even deeper into Eller you can see he already has a very impressive hardware closet, with a S53 WJC Gold Medal, S54 4 Star Cup, S54 IIHF Gold Medal, and the S55 Ryan Jesster trophy. With a guy like that in net the Canadians are and will be scary for a very long time.

Reflection on your season - how did your player fare on the ice this season? Did you meet or surpass your individual player goals or did you come up short? Whether you excelled or disappointed - what can you attribute that to? What will you try to do better next season?

Going into this SMJHL season, I had high expectations after a successful S55 season finishing with 14 goals and 25 assists. I really wanted to working on my scoring ability but also being a more responsible player in the defensive zone as well. So overall S56 was an up and down season for me. Offensively, I had the best season in my career. I scored 20 goals (8th in league) and had 23 assists, which was good for 7th in the league in points. 16 points of the 43 came on the powerplay. So on the offensive side, I exceeded my expectations for this season. But defensively not so much. I finished with a +/- of -5. And I also racked up an surprisingly amount of penalty minutes. My PIMs went from 18 total in S55 to 56 in S56. So I will have to do a better job there.  I expect to be much better defensively going forward, and I will work on it. (164 words)

Which SHL or SMJHL team was the best team to not make the finals this season and why?

In the SMJHL, I think the only team that would have fell short if they didnt make the finals is Vancouver. And they won the whole thing. So no surprise there. But in the SHL, I think Calgary is the best team that did not make the finals. The Dragons had a great season winning 38 games. The were arguably the best defensive team in the league, only giving up 85 goals on the year. (1.7 GA/G). But they ran into Edmonton in the playoffs who seemed to figure them out giving up 24 goals in 6 games. I had predicted that Calgary was going to make finals so I am surprised they got knocked out. -117 Words

b. Do you foresee the teams making any strategic adjustments during the course of the series? Should the teams be quick to switch tactics or stick with what they've been using?

d. If, once it is safe to do so, you had to go hang out in person with one of the users on Buffalo/Hamilton, who would you hang out with and what would you do? (if you pick gabe you get -1 tpe)

a. Without coaching or tactics, I would say Hamilton has the better overall skaters. Michael Scarn, Dick Clapper, Aaron Wilson, and Theo Morgan are all elite level players and are an offensive wrecking crew. All four of these players also have earned over 2000 TPE. Impressive to reach such a milestone for one player. But to have 4 of them on the same team. So I definitely give it to the Hamilton skaters. - 72 Words
b. I dont think either team makes an tactical changes at this point. Both have made it this far and have proved that they can get it done. Unless something goes horribly wrong, and one of the teams absolutely crushes the other in the first 2 games. I really dont see a need for changes. -54 words

I would vote for Aaron Wilson for the Series MVP. While both teams, had players who did alot better in the playoffs as a whole. Luffy, Sharp, Morgan, Scarn, Clapper all had more points than Wilson throughout the entirety of the playoffs. Wilson had 18 points but of those 18, 8 points (2 goals and 6 assists) came in the finals. Wilson contributed in every single game they won. The only game where he didnt produce they were shutout. So no points there. I could argue for Theo Morgan with his 5 goals in the finals. But I felt the Aaron Wilson was overall a better player in the series. So my vote goes to him. -116 words

The only goal I usually have for my player and for his team is to win the Challenge Cup.  Obviously, that did not happen this season, so my only real goal wasn’t met.  It was a up and down season for the Specters, we lost some key players in the off season and during the season as well.  We fought hard all season long though, but looking at the numbers, all of the Specters didn’t have the best of seasons.  Lyle specifically was a bit underwhelming.  He is coming up to the pinnacle of his playing career and I had hoped he would have taken a step up in his production and helped win a couple of more games for the Specters.  Coming into next season, Lyle will be hitting his peak TPE count before he hits regression.  I hope that this means that he’ll be able to help the Specters get back to their dominate ways and show the league the team they can be.

I am taken the easy choice here and going with S54.  NOLA’s win over the heavily favoured Hamilton Steelhawks.  It seemed like the Specters team were the only people who thought they had any chance against the stacked Steelhawks team.  I remember some of the comments in the Youtube chat when Hamilton came out hard and took a multiple goal lead in the first period, people were already calling the series, thinking that we had no chance to even win a game.  That changed in a hurry.  We came back in the game to take the first game on the road and then proceeded to take the next game in Hamilton as well.  With a 2-0 series lead, we completed the sweep that no one saw coming at home, ending it all with a game 4 overtime goal.  This was my first time in the finals and I didn’t know what to expect, winning it all was amazing and it’s a feeling that I want to get back.

If the SHL needed to set up a playoff bubble (like the NHL did in Edmonton/Toronto or the NBA in Orlando), which city would be the best candidate to host as the hub city? What would the players do during their time in a playoff bubble? (For graphic option, make an advertisement [like a pamphlet/brochure] in support of a specific city as the hub city and highlighting the reasons why.)

For an SHL bubble, I think it would need to be a Canadian city, since it seems like we are in a bit better position in the COVIDness area then our neighbours to the south.  Looking at our Canadian teams in the SHL, we’ve got Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Winnipeg and Hamilton.  I’d take Hamilton off the list first, cause I’m not a big fan of the city having lived there for a couple of years and it’s kinda dirty if you ask me.  I’d take Calgary off the list, cause they’ve already got the Stampede and I think that should still be their big claim to fame.  And Edmonton and Toronto just had the NHL bubble so I don’t think they should get two bubbles. Winnipeg is just too damn cold, so they are off the list too.  So that leaves us looking at Canadian SMJHL teams and I don’t have to look any further than Vancouver.  The city is a beauty and has already shown it can accommodate a large number of athletes having had the Winter Olympics there in 2010.  Vancouver has a lot to offer the players and teams and would be a great bubble selection for the SHL.

a. Both of these teams have an impressive set of skaters - without factoring in any coaching or tactical strategies, which team do you think has the better roster of skaters on paper?

I have to go with Hamilton here.  Their roster is just stacked with high end talent.  It seems that they somehow lure these top players to the Steelhawks and I don’t know how.  My working theory is that Gabe kidnaps their simulation families and holds them for ransom until they win a cup, so we’ll see if my theory checks out if we see a player exodus when these players contracts are up.

b. Do you foresee the teams making any strategic adjustments during the course of the series? Should the teams be quick to switch tactics or stick with what they've been using?

If any two teams know each other any better then Hamilton and Buffalo, I’d be very surprised.  These teams seem to battle it out every single season for as long as I can remember.  And not just in the playoffs, they go toe to toe during the regular season multiple times since they are in the same division. I think that both these teams can anticipate each others moves like top notch chess players, so this should be a fun one to watch.

c. These two teams hail from the Great Lakes Division. Which of the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) do you think is the Greatest and why?

Another easy one for me.  Lake Huron is by far the greatest of the great lakes.  Not only because I live on lake Huron and swim in it everyday in the summer.  Not only does Lake Huron have the cleanest and warmest water it also has the best beaches.  I would listen to other peoples opinions on the other lakes but deep down inside I would know that they are horribly wrong.

d. If, once it is safe to do so, you had to go hang out in person with one of the users on Buffalo/Hamilton, who would you hang out with and what would you do? (if you pick gabe you get -1 tpe)

I was going to say Gabe, but I think I like TPE more than him, so I’m going with Kal.  Sharing the Team Canada locker room with Kal is a joy.  He is a solid guy all around and the amount of effort he puts into the league is amazing.  I feel that I owe him several beers (or any drink of his choice) and the rest of the league should feel the same way.

Honesty, I'd say my player did fairly well as a rookie in the SHL.  I didn't really set out with any goals for this season since I had no idea what to expect with switching leagues.  I ended up with 25 points, which was my second highest career total, sandwiched in between year 2 and 3 of Juniors (24, 33). 68 blocked shots was very good, but a bit of a drop from my highs of 103 and 104, but that was when I was playing top line minutes in the Juniors, so that's understandable.  I am a little disappointed I didn't hit any of the season milestones, but again, that's likely understandable since the milestones are based on the top 30-50% of the league and as a rookie I'm at the bottom.  The season started slow, but improved, which I attribute to increasing skills from training as well as the team dialing in the tactics. As a two-way forward I hope I can improve both my scoring and my defensive abilities next season.  Now that I am no longer capped with training I can continue to improve throughout the seasons instead of just a bump at the beginning. Which SHL or SMJHL team was the best team to not make the finals this season and why?

I'd have to say Edmonton.  They beat the best team in the West, Calgary, but then lost to Hamilton and we ended up with two East teams in the finals. If the playoff bracket had stayed separated, there's a good chance they could have moved on as the West champions.  Of course, Chicago would have been a tough out, who eventually lost to Buffalo in 7 games, after sweeping Texas 4-0.  Still, after beating Calgary it would have been hard to count Edmonton out.  Who knows what might have happened if they had gotten to face Chicago.  Buffalo and Hamilton would have been an epic Eastern finals. Honestly, this is kind of tough, since the last Simon and first FHM finals are within this list, but I would say S54 NOLA over Hamilton.  After the cheating scandal which led to the FHM switch, Hamilton made it to the finals and won the first FHM Championship, which I'm sure didn't make a lot of people happy.  They made it to the finals again in S54 but this time they were bested by New Orleans for the teams first Championship! After making the finals in their inaugural season of S46 it was a long slog for New Orleans to get back to the finals, but when they made it, they made it count! They even made it a sweep to boot. Several former Crows are on the New Orleans squad, so I was very excited to see them finally win one. You never forget your first! Congrats New Orleans! (150 words)

Assuming the United States is still horribly mismanaging the pandemic, which I guess is kind of the point of the question, the best option in my opinion would be Winnipeg.  It's fairly centrally located in Canada.  It would be a long haul for teams like LA, Texas and New Orleans, but you'd only have to make the trip once and would likely be less travel overall than going back and forth multiple times over the course of a 7 game series.  It's hard to say what the players might do in the bubble since a lot of places will be closed and they will mostly be hanging out at the hotels and arena, but there will be CFL Football to watch on TV, and lots of deliveries of iconic Canadian foods like poutine, All Dressed (or Ketchup) chips, and butter tarts.  Wafer pie is also a local Winnipeg specialty which is a méringue topped custard pie, similar to a lemon-meringue pie south of the border. Monkey D Luffy led all playoff scorers with 30 points, and second was his own teammate.  But of course being on the losing team makes it hard to give him the MVP, no matter how well earned it may be. My money is on goalie A. Jobin for Hamilton.  Last season he played 12 games in the playoffs with a 3.15 GAA, .900 sv% and 2 shutouts.  This season, he was able to extend Hamilton to 18 games, and 12 wins.  He lowered his GAA to 2.59 and his save percent rose to .908, also with 2 shutouts.  I know it's a team game, but goalies get "credit" for wins, and 12 wins in the playoffs equals a cup. What's your prediction for this season's IIHF tournament? Which teams do you expect to do well (or not well)? Which players?

Is it cliche to say Canada should do well this IIHF. I mean, my player is the lowest TPE player on the roster and he is 1.4k! Like that's crazy. The issue is that IIHF doesn't do series for the Medal rounds, and Canada under performs in the round robin a lot. It's tradition. I do expect Japan to shock me with their wonder line, and I wouldn't be surprised to see USA/GBR upset somewhere. Canada and USA being in the same group is a tad suspect though. As far as players, I think no one on Canada will be standout. Maybe Morgan translates his success to the IIHF, but its hard to standout when the TPE is so high. I can't even remember anyone on the other teams. I am just so tired all the time. This pandemic is the worst thing. I just want hockey back. Oh, Boivin will do better than he did last year. I can guarantee that motherfuckers.

a. Both of these teams have an impressive set of skaters - without factoring in any coaching or tactical strategies, which team do you think has the better roster of skaters on paper?
b. Do you foresee the teams making any strategic adjustments during the course of the series? Should the teams be quick to switch tactics or stick with what they've been using?
c. These two teams hail from the Great Lakes Division. Which of the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) do you think is the Greatest and why?
d. If, once it is safe to do so, you had to go hang out in person with one of the users on Buffalo/Hamilton, who would you hang out with and what would you do? (if you pick gabe you get -1 tpe)

a. I think Hamilton probably has the better roster. Theres a lot of depth and good earners there. Team is hitting regression but they aren't too deep into it. Also they have the strong hand of one Robert Phelps to guide them once again. Also a buffalo player told me that they weren't expected to win so there is that. However, Doyle rules and goalies are stupid in this sim.
b. Yeah. You constantly make adjustments even when you are winning. Its the finals! You expect them to hard counter. You expect them to test against you. You gotta do it. Now are they gonna do something funky? Nah. I think both teams wouldn't do that. But yea they will change everything up if it gets to the wire. If one sweeps, well then one sweeps.
c. I don't think it can be Lake Superior. If you have to tell everyone that you are superior then are you really? Wouldnt that be evident? Its like if I had everyone call me Mr. Magnum Dong McGoodlooking Greed God (my recreate's name mind you). Anyway It is probably Lake Eerie because I named my neopet that when I was little. It was the griffon looking one.
d. But I want to pick Gabe because his family has a cool summer cottage. Like he sent me picks and its fucking rad. If I have to pick someone else, I would pick DrunkenTeddy because he said he would be my fake dad, and I respect that a lot. I need to financial and emotional support.

This season was the sophomore season for me. After a tough Playoff loss to Maine Timber, the Anchorage Armada felt to be better than ever. The team stuck together, there were no major call ups. I hit my cap prior to the start of the season, so I had high hopes. The season started a bit weird, with having standout wins and headscratching losses in back to back games. I had a pretty rough start, and never really reached the level I hoped to play at. After about the halftime mark of the season, I finally started to score at least a bit, and defensive stats also improved a bit. But overall this season was an underwhelming one for Michael Withecheck. I was able to hit only 2 milestones. At least 4 would have been the goal, but I fell short in too many categories. Next season I‘ll improve my game further, and hope to play up to the level I hope for. With the leader on defense called up, I have a chance to move up the roster and play a very important part on defense. I hope we can compensate the loss of some important players and fight for the 4 star cup once more.

Ok, I‘ll try this challenge. I‘m participating in some competitions as well, and one format used there was really incredible dumb. Think about that, in a 12-team playoff we have 8 teams challenging against each other first, 4 are on bye. The teams on the bye must be the best teams. Well, if you want to have the dumbest, just let the 4 worst teams be on bye. Here you have it. But that would be too easy.
Well, the first 4 teams on bye, the 1st of each of their division. So, all teams are seeded from 1 to 12. 5 to 12 are playing against each other in the first round. But they aren‘t playing 5 vs 12. They play 5 vs 9, 6 vs 10, 7 vs 11 and 8 vs 12. Dumb, right? Yeah, it is. Let‘s say the higher ones advance, we fare like that further. So 1 vs 5, 2 vs 6, 3 vs 7 and 4 vs 8. The higher ones advance again: semis is 1 vs 3 and 2 vs 4.
I know it‘s dumb and by far not fair, but that was the exact same format I had to challenge in in real life. After my complaints about how stupid this format is, they really changed it the following year. Please don‘t introduce this format, thanks.

The clear and obvious pick for a playoff bubble is no other city than Anchorage. At first, this might sound surprising and out of the world, but if you think closer about it, it totally makes sense. First of, Anchorage isn‘t big, which already reduces the chance of spreading the virus. Personally I never have been to Anchorage, but I think it‘s a cozy little town far up north, where not too much is happening. And this is good. If you go to a city with lots of people and business, the danger of spreading the virus is bigger. So we try to go somewhere, where people are used to stay at home. It‘s quite cold in Anchorage, which is perfect for ice hockey, but not especially necessary. The infrastracture for ice hockey is there, because what else would someone do in Anchorage? It‘s nothing I have checked, but I‘d be disappointed if this wasn‘t the case. Well, what should players do? They should stay in their hotel, do whatever is allowed in a frickin pandemic and only leave their appartment for training and games.

The Anchorage Armada was the best team which missed finals. The form they played all season finally also showed in the semi playoffs again. Anchorage Armada had a very good team this season, which wasn‘t quite shown in the end. They never were able to play at their full potential. Over the season, they showed so many different faces of their team, that you never knew if they show up as one of the greatest team on ice or looking as a bunch of rookies. This fluctuation cost them the chance on the finals in the end too. They never really got a winning streak going, but still finished as the #2 team of the league in the end. In the semis they outshot their opponent in 5/6 games, but only won 2 games. Maybe next season, boat gang.

My take on the IIHF tournament is the one of not even a prospector. I played my second season in the SMJHL, and got drafted to the SHL last offseason. In the first season, I got to know all minor teams, in my second season I started following the big league too and know all of those teams now. Finally, in my third year, I think I‘ll get to know more players and which country they are playing for. The only deeper insight I have at the moment is in Team Austria, and I hope the know to surprise. Always seen as outsider or underdog rather then contenders, they‘ll start into another tournament. If I remember correct, they got a bit lucky in the group draw, as it seems to be the easier of the two groups. They still are underdogs though, nothing has changed there. I can‘t tell you the complete roster or players over 1000 TPE, so it‘s hard to give some takes. From what I‘ve heard, Team Great Britain is the big favorite on the title this time. I didn‘t read much about it, but it seems they have just 2 players without 1000+ TPE which seems to be really good. I guess they‘ll be the favorites on the gold medal. I think USA and Canada will do pretty good as well, so these three nations will battle for Gold and Silver, some underdogs will compete for Bronze with the team missing out on the finals of the 3 named ones.

Reflection on your season - how did your player fare on the ice this season? Did you meet or surpass your individual player goals or did you come up short? Whether you excelled or disappointed - what can you attribute that to? What will you try to do better next season?

1. This past season Kristjansson really under performed.I was expected a lot more out of him and he ended up worse than his second season in the SMJHL. Honeslty I am unsure what to attribute this failure to at all as once the post season hit I was a point per game which made no sense to me as to why my regular season was so mediocre. I saw a regression in the regular season that I want to blame updated my players defensive attributes to , however It really is a baseless blame. I had a goal of netting 40 points however fell short at 29, and didn't improve any of my stats from last season besides my defensive stats and those are the only milestones I ended up getting, the defensive ones. Well next season I will be up in the SHL and fully expect a fresh start to which I hope at least 10 points in my first season, a man can dream.

What's your prediction for this season's IIHF tournament? Which teams do you expect to do well (or not well)? Which players?

7. Being a Canada home boy, I obviously chose Canada to win this seasons IIHF tournament, and personally have a soft spot for Japan, former team of my former player and think they can surprise. At this point I haven't really been paying attention to the IIHF as I am mostly interested in the WJC given the level of my current player however if I would have to make a guess as to who will do well in this tournament I would give a shutout to 2 players a shared a team with in the past. I fully expect Carpy and Luffy to carry their teams respectively , Finland and Japan if im not mistaken, and to be real standouts in this years edition of the tournament. I would have additionally said Frans Eller but I have no idea if he even made the cut for team Canada because I haven't been paying anyt attention. Gold: Canada, Silver: USA, Bronze: Russia, there you go, my predictions which are probably already incorrect.

2. The most memorable series for me, not that I even paid any attention to them at all since my previous player was trash and since then Ive been in the SMJHL however I would say one in recent memory, S55 Buf over Nola. Nola was the reigning champ from the season prior and my old friend Monkey D. Luffy was leading Buffalo. Well as is natural I was hoping to see my friend win a cup, especially over the reigning champs. The team did this too, on the cusp of Luffy's beginning of regression so I was pretty happy for the guy. This may not be the most memorable for the league, but personally to me it is, at least more than the others as the other games or series had no real meaning to me as I wasn't honestly paying any attention to them. Can't say I paid attention to S55 either but I at least was happy when I heard the result, also the banner was okay as well.

d. If, once it is safe to do so, you had to go hang out in person with one of the users on Buffalo/Hamilton, who would you hang out with and what would you do? (if you pick gabe you get -1 tpe)

a. Answering this question just really isn't fair at this point in time. Originally I was going to say Buffalo but Hamilton won the cup so it was them wasn't it. I honestly don't know their rosters very well, but I was going to answer Buffalo because of my friend and old teammate on Lethbridge, Luffy but alas.

b. Well again at this point with it being over. I expected both teams to stick with the strategies they have been using and slowly adapt them if one goes down 0-2 games in a series. I am not sure if Buffalo did this before losing however I would assume there were changes that were made to no avail.

c. Although I'm from Toronto, and I am super familiar with Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, I would have to give the greatest lake award to lake Superior. As they say Lake Superior never gives up her dead, and is the largest freshwater lake by surface area, enough for me to be considered the greatest.

d. Okay this one is easy. I would hang out with Monkey D. Luffy obviously and basically the hang out session would last a couple of minutes with threats of being traded, even though I am not on Buffalo, and then I would threaten to retire all in good fun. I think it would be a nice time.

My player Esa Parmborg had a career year. 61 points, 23 goals, 38 assists finishing 8th in league scoring. Career highs across the board for Parmborg and he also had the highest game rating in the league with an 86. He was also 2nd in the league with a +46 rating. It was just an all around awesome season for Parmborg and the Dragons. I think I can attribute the success to improving multiple attributes to 18 while staying strong defensively along with moving to 1st line center. My line was one of the top lines in the league this season with Maxime Bouchard and Joseph Weston also having career seasons and I believe we had the best +/- of any line also. Next season I will try and have a similar impact for the Dragons, focusing on strong two way play and remaining an offensive force. As the old saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I think season 50, the golden anniversary season of the SHL's challenge cup was the most memorable. Calgary has been the most successful and consistent team in league history, so it's only fitting they would be the season 50 champs and they did it in the most exciting fashion with a reverse sweep in the cup finals after going 12-2 through the first 3 rounds. This further cemented Calgary's spot as the #1 organization in the league and old balls Esa Anrikkanen won his 6th cup as a GM, no other GM even has 5. So if anyone was going to represent the league as S50 champions it's fitting it was Calgary. On a personal note this also marked the culmination of the S45 re-tool for the Dragons as they won with 15+ players that were drafted by Calgary. A true home grown championship and very well deserved and one that was very special to myself and many players on that roster.

I'm not a biggest fan of the new playoff format. I understand why it has to happen but I don't like losing the Western and Eastern Conference championships that have been in place for 55 seasons. That's always been a key element of the league, win your conference and represent them in the finals. That being said 1 vs 2 on the same side of the bracket is pretty lame also, if I had to come up with something worse I'd say might as well just give the #9-12 seed a 1st round bye and match up 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6 and 7 vs 8 in round 1. That makes about as much sense and earning the #1 and #2 seed and having to play each other in the semi finals. I get it but I think we can do better, hopefully fhm offers some other options soon.

6. Written, 2 TPE

I think Calgary was the best team not to make the finals this season. We had a dominant year posting our best record since S10 and my most wins as a GM with 38 and our highest goal differential with +105. Not to mention career years for multiple players including our goalie who posted the lowest GAA since I can remember. If felt we had a group to go deep and could beat anyone as we did all season. Definitely disappointed we did not win a round or make the finals this season, but we will obviously be strong again next year and keep working to get back to the finals. Losing is not acceptable.

a. Both of these teams have an impressive set of skaters - without factoring in any coaching or tactical strategies, which team do you think has the better roster of skaters on paper?

- I think Hamilton has the best roster on paper and Theo Morgan was a man possessed this season and they have other stars like Aaron Wilson, etc. I think it will be hard for Buffalo to match up with Hamilton's elite players in this series. There’s just too many of them.

b. Do you foresee the teams making any strategic adjustments during the course of the series? Should the teams be quick to switch tactics or stick with what they've been using?

-I think if either teams gets down 2 games they will make a strategic adjustment, especially if they are not playing like they want to or feel they are capable of. Whoever is winning though will stick with it and make no changes.

c. These two teams hail from the Great Lakes Division. Which of the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) do you think is the Greatest and why?

-Lake Ontario by far is the greatest great lake because it has an awesome population of salmon and steelhead that I fish for every year. The other lakes have some also but I'm closest to Ontario so it gets the nod here.

Task 1
Logan Wong was much improved in his sophomore season of the SMJHL. From not even being good enough to play the entire season last season, to being able to play the entirety of this season at a very good skill. The Calgary Dragons should be very happy with the huge step forward Logan Wong took this season. In 50 games for the Knights, Wong tallied 5 goals and 15 points, good enough for 20 points and an even +/- rating. He added 20 takeaways and 33 shots blocked, which is also a huge step up from his rookie season. Logan Wong in his rookie season only had a total of 4 points, 2 takeaways and 5 shots blocked. Logan Wong said he is content with his sophomore season and is glad he took huge steps forward in all assets of his game. He also said though that he is not satisfied with where he is at yet compared to other players from his draft class, and will work even harder this offseason to be one day, a superstar.

Task 2
I think the S47 WKP over CGY Challenge Cup victory was the most important series. Prior to S47, WKP have won cups in S41 and S43. This S47 cup was their 3rd of the 40s, and by the end of the season 40 season, WKP had the most cups in that time span. What made it even more important? The Calgary Dragons were the Platoon’s opponent, and they had previously won their own championships in season 40 and season 42. Both teams had 2 cups in the 40s, and both teams were looking for their 3rd. At the end of the final buzzer, the West Kendall Platoon took home the ultimate prize, and it ended up being the West Kendall Platoon’s last Challenge Cup ever, after the team rebranded to the Baltimore Platoon. The Dragons took home another cup in season 50, but the 40s belonged to the Platoon. A handful of team had 2 cups in the 40s, but the Platoon are the only team who are able to say they had 3, and they were ultimately the dynasty of the 40s.

Task 3
There are currently 18 teams in the SHL, 9 teams per conference. What if, and hear me out, we just made the worst teams of the league feel like absolute trash. 16 teams make the playoffs, 8 from each conference. But it gets even better (worse)! The first round is just a single game elimination. The second round is a best of 3. The third round is a best of 5, while the finals is finally the typical best of 7. The amount of potential upsets we can have in the first round would be amazing. Imagine being the first place team in the entire league and having an off night, and being beaten by the 8th seed. To make this all even better, we can have the 2 teams who didn’t make it do their own best of 7 after the Challenge Cup finals are over. The winner, gets first overall. This would be hilarious, funny, and probably downright stupid.
Code:
161 words

Task 4
Vancouver would be a great place for the league to set up a bubble. There are already lots of arenas there and Vancouver has already been used to host the winter Olympics in the past, so we know that city is ready to take on any type of challenge. We also know that Vancouver is able to hold a lot of athletes in the hotels there, so why not take advantage of what’s already built in Vancouver. With hockey arenas all over the city and beautiful sights for players to go to after their season is over if they so wish, Vancouver would be a great place to be. While being in the bubble, players will have their own ski and snowboard hills to do on their free time that will not be open to the public to avoid any potential spread of covid-19. There is also a beautiful aquarium in Vancouver for players to see, that will be closed from the public for a week, while SHL players are the only players allowed to go in.
Code:

Task 6
The Calgary Dragons are the biggest shock to not make the finals. With a dominating 38-8-4 record in the Western Conference, they had a 12 point cushion on the second best team in the Conference. And yet, not only did they not make it past the first round, they didn’t make it the conference finals. Playoffs are supposed to be defensive battles, grindy, low scoring games. And that’s exactly how the Dragons played in the regular season. While only being 5th in the entire league in goals for, they were first in goals against by 6, and first in their conference by about 34 from the next best team in that category. The Dragons being eliminated so early was a huge shock to the entire league, especially with how they’re built.

Well first things first, the team did not do as well as we could have. Obviously we tried our best but we did not reach the playoffs with the Seattle Argonauts. I am a bit disappointed with this but we have a great team and will only get better over time. My player, Thomas Vanice certainly made a step forward player wise, but it definitely did go differently than I assumed. I had 9 goals and 25 assists, for 34 total points. Six of those points are power play points as well. I am definitely happy that I did better than in previous seasons, but as a goal scorer, I was hoping to score a few more goals rather than get so many assists, but we will see how that continues in the next few seasons. I hope that next season will be better for both myself and the team and that we can take a step forward together.

Well let's see. Obviously the #1 seed and the #2 seed would play in the first round. One of the top two teams would immediately go out. The #5 seed would get the #12 seed, since randomness can be kinda fun and I wanna give the fifth best team an advantage. #3 plays #6 and #4 plays #7. After that, what is left, I suppose #8 and #9 seed would get a bye and #10 would play #11. I feel like this would lead to some really interesting matchups and playoffs. I would love to see teams strategizing to end up as the #5 seed hahaha that would be funny actually.

To be honest there's really no way to sugar coat this season, it was a complete and utter failure. This should've been the best season of my career individually. The highest TPE forward on my team, 5th highest TPE player in the entire league, two straight 60 point seasons. Everything was pointing to S56 being my shot to perform as one of the league's elites. It ended up being anything but. I had such a streaky, underwhelming season...showing up to score hat tricks in random games and then going 3-4 straight games pointless. This complete shit show of a season saw me finish below point per game and even outside of my team's top 5 scorers. Feels like an absolute waste of my peak TPE season and the cherry on top of what's looking like it'll be an extremely underwhelming career. I could've made up for that brutal individual regular season by helping to lead us to a Challenge Cup championship but the playoffs were even more brutal after we blew a 3-0 lead in the semi finals to go out and miss our best chance at a Cup in franchise history.

Looking at the given list, two of these finals stand out in particular for me. The first one is the S46 final between BUF and NOLA, a very exciting final from the start with a guaranteed first time winner to come out of it. On one hand you had the New Orleans Specters, fresh in their first season in the league, looking to write the almost impossible cinderella story of winning a Challenge Cup in their inaugural season. On the other hand, you had the Buffalo Stampede who had over 20 seasons of playoff woes come into the final with an absolute powerhouse team, looking to finally end the big drought in Buffalo and bring the joy of a championship to Stampede fans for the first time ever. The other one that stands out to me is the S50 final between CGY and TBB, this one was actually expected to be a pretty boring final going into it. You had the Dragons who were a heavy favourite against the underdog half rebuilding Barracuda. What made this one interesting was the Cuda jumping out to a 3-0 series lead before getting reverse swept in what has to be the biggest choke job in SHL history, being reverse swept is embarrassing enough (trust me, I know) but being reverse swept in the finals....my goodness that is just on a whole other level

So the SHL's team locations actually make a perfect organic bubble for the league. You can use the Great Lakes division because of the geographical location of the four teams in that division. It sets up perfectly really. Use Buffalo and Chicago as bubbles for the Western Conference and then use Toronto and Hamilton as bubbles for the Eastern Conference. This way with 4 bubble cities you don't need to have too many afternoon games and can still maximize those lucrative primetime TV slots. Split the West bracket into 2, put one half in Buffalo, the other half in Chicago. Then do the same in the East with half in Toronto and half in Hamilton. The conference finals would be held in Buffalo and Hamilton, transporting the teams from Toronto to Hamilton and Chicago to Buffalo can be done safely on buses since the host cities would be so close to each other and then the final would be held in Buffalo so that the team crossing over wouldn't have to quarantine for 2 weeks in Canada. Again transport for this is easy as Hamilton is not far at all from Buffalo. Easy, safe, and convenient solution.

Design a Challenge Cup championship hat for one of the teams in the finals. (A four-star cup championship hat for the SMJHL is ok as well.)
